We are meeting Fridays in the Chapel at 8:15am. Morning Prayer is an offshoot of the ancient Christian tradition of the Daily Office. The thirty minute service is usually lay led and consists of reciting psalms and prayers together. All are welcome. TRINITY LENTEN SERIES Embracing Transition: Humanity at the Crossroads Sundays, March 17, 24, 31 and April 7 after the 10am service for one hour. During Lent we are exploring a journey into what Lee Van Ham, Director of Jubilee Economic Ministries, calls the OneEarth Paradigm shorthand for the idea that in order to remain viable, humanity must embrace a new way of life that is sustainable by the resources of our one planet Earth. In this Sunday series, we will think together about what it would mean to live in the OneEarth Paradigm, and what we must do to achieve it, including: * From Ego Consciousness to Christ Consciousness: Who s in the driver s seat of our thinking, feeling and acting? Moving from Fear to Love as a requirement for the paradigm shift. * Church and Spiritual Practices: Transitioning to a creation-centered spirituality/theology as an imperative in the coming age. * Putting Money in Its Place: Weaning ourselves from the economics of perpetual growth, profit and greed, and embracing the simple elegance of enough. * The OneEarth Consumer: How and what we consume and eat is perhaps the single biggest area where ordinary people can have an impact at the moment. THE SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION is an opportunity to make an honest inventory of our lives in order to be reminded of God s love which sets us free through forgiveness. Contact The Rev. Elizabeth A. If you can help, please call or Cami (csegna@trinitysb.org ). SAYING GOODBYE & SAYING HELLO... A Message from Our Associate Rector Why did Sarah laugh, and say, Shall I indeed bear a child, now that I am old? Is anything too wonderful for the Lord? (Genesis 18:13-14) Dear Members of Trinity I share news of my departure with mixed emotion. I m so very grateful to have been welcomed and embraced by the Trinity community. In the midst of much transition, your faithfulness has both nurtured and inspired me to proclaim the hope within me, for our common life. Together, we ve grieved the loss of many and hoped for a future that reveals the fullness of God s love. The love I feel for this community will be forever etched into my heart. I will take comfort and rest in the bonds of affection developed over the past two years. As your priest, I ve had the privilege of placing into your cupped hands the body of Christ, and the privilege of being present to each of us becoming who we are in Christ. For this, I thank you and I will miss you. With cupped hands, I now await the blessing of a child. I ve waited far too long for a tiny infant hand to be nestled in mine and put off the call to motherhood for far too many years. Last summer I took the steps to begin a process of adopting a child. I ve been matched with a birth mom in Indianapolis. Her due date is March 21, the first day of Spring. When the birth mother goes into labor, my mom and I will fly to Indianapolis and God willing, I ll bring a home a baby girl, who will be called Lauren Claire. I ask your prayers for the birth parents, the baby and my family as we wait in joyful anticipation. Considering the baby s due date, today may just be the last Sunday I worship with you as your Associate Rector. Please know that I carry with me your generosity of spirit, love and prayers. I will keep Trinity apprised of the progress of the adoption and I look forward to introducing you to Lauren Claire at some point in the future. In the meanwhile, please feel free to stay in touch at laureljohnston@earthlink.net or (805) In Christ s Love, Laurel CONTACT: Nursery/Toddler care, Church School ages 3 12 and Youth ages Vanessa Woods, nessawoods@gmail.com TODAY IN THE CHURCH SCHOOL Children at Trinity meet most Sundays for the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd program (CGS). Since each Level of the program covers a range of ages, often several lessons are offered each Sunday, with most children taking part in only one. Today Level I will work with materials depicting the parable of the Good Shepherd and the 3-dimensional map of the City of Jerusalem, and reflect on more verses of Psalm 23. Level II will reflect on Jesus parable of the Found Sheep and work with materials depicting Jesus final meal with his followers, the Last Supper. Level III will begin their reading and discussion of the Old Testament account of The Fall. YOUTH GROUP Next Meeting: Sunday, March 31, 3-6pm community FASHION FLING Sunday, March 24, 10am-1pm Jefferson Hall, Unitarian Society 1535 Santa Barbara St Women of the Unitarian Congregation invite women from nearby congregations to a women s clothing sale. 3

5 holy week and easter 2019 From early times, Christians have observed the week before Easter as a time of special devotion. As the pilgrim Egeria recorded in the late fourth century, Jerusalem contained many sacred places that were sites for devotion and liturgy. Numerous pilgrims to the holy city followed the path of Jesus in his last days. They formed processions, worshipped where Christ suffered and died, and venerated relics. From this beginning evolved the rites we observe today on Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday. These services provide a liturgical experience of the last days of Jesus earthly life, as well as the time and events leading up to his resurrection. The three holy days, or Triduum, of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday are at the heart of the Holy Week observance. Please join us be part of the story for all of the sacred richness of our Palm Sunday, Triduum, and Easter Sunday services. April 14: Palm Sunday We remember Jesus triumphal entry into Jerusalem the week before his death. 8am The Blessing of the Palms and Holy Eucharist. 10am The Liturgy of the Palms and Holy Eucharist. All who are able please assemble on the Labyrinth Plaza for the Blessing of the Palms and procession into the church for Eucharist. April 18: Maundy Thursday Our celebration commemorates the institution of the Eucharist, and Jesus mandate to his disciples to show love through acts of humble service. 6pm Agape Meal, Footwashing, Eucharist, Stripping of the Altar. Please gather in the Parish Hall for a simple, shared meal before moving to the church sanctuary for foot washing, Eucharist, and the stripping of the altar. See the sign-up chart by the Welcome Table to sign up to bring bread, cheese, olives, dried fruit, nuts, hummus, grapes, wine/grape juice to share with the people at your table. April 19: Good Friday We commemorate the trial and crucifixion of Jesus as we hear The Passion story, offer honor to the cross, and share communion from reserve sacrament. 12 noon Good Friday Ecumenical Service at First Presbyterian Church, 21 E. Constance Ave in Santa Barbara. 6pm Good Friday Liturgy, with veneration of the cross and communion from reserve sacrament. The principal liturgy of the day with choral singing of The Passion narrative. April 20: Great Vigil of Easter 9am Decorating of the Church. Everyone is welcome to help prepare and transform the sanctuary for our Easter Vigil and Easter Day liturgies. No experience necessary. Sign up at the Welcome Table. 7pm Great Vigil of Easter with festive reception to follow. This liturgy is the first celebration of Easter, rejoicing in Jesus resurrection from the dead. Our service begins on the Labyrinth Plaza with the lighting of the new fire, symbolizing the light of Christ in the world. After processing in to the sanctuary, we hear readings and sing hymns that recount salvation history; we renew our baptismal vows and we share the bread and wine of the Eucharist. Please bring bells to ring in the Alleluias as well as an appetizer to share at the reception in the Parish Hall following the service. 7pm Liturgy of Light. This joyful and solemn atrium service for children aged 5 through 12 takes place during the Easter Vigil. In prayer, song and scripture we remember the death and celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. No nursery care is provided during the Easter Vigil. *The Labyrinth will be available for walks before and after this service. April 21: Easter Sunday Celebrating Jesus glorious resurrection, and triumph over death. 8am Festival Choral Eucharist. 10am Festival Choral Eucharist. (Incense will be used. ) All children are invited to flower the cross to begin the service (you may bring your own flowers, or some flowers will be on hand). Activities for children will take place in the Parish Hall during the first part of the service; children will join their families for the Eucharist.
