1 Trinity NOTES December 1, 2013 Dear g Sisters and Brothers, Sunday Schedule December 1 st I want to encourage you to read your weekly Trinity NOTES. The NOTES often contain important information about upcoming events as well as changes in our Sunday or weekly routine. For example, this week, like last week, there will be a change in the Sunday morning routine. Breakfast will be followed by an intergenerational wreath making session at 9:00 which has become a tradition at Trinity. The children in the Catechesis program are encouraged to attend the wreath making first and then proceed to the atrium. There will also be a change in next week s Sunday routine. Because of the Bishop s afternoon visitation our worship on December 8 th will be at 1:30 pm followed by a festive reception. I do hope you will plan to be present to hear and greet Bishop Susan Goff. Your presence will support Patten Mahler, who will be confirmed, and Joe Mahler, who will be received into the Episcopal Church. One final Note, this Sunday, December 1 st, is the first Sunday of the month which means we normally encourage your food donations for the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. On this particular first Sunday I would encourage you to bring a toy for the School House Thriftshop. The proceeds from their annual Christmas sale on December 7 th provides funds for many ministries in the area including two here at Trinity: Mitchell House and Bread and Roses. Please pray for Amy Griffith, whose dad is coming to grips with a terminal illness Please pray for David who lives with the Baileys. He will be receiving additional chemotherapy. 4 News from the Atrium (Catechesis of the Good Shepherd) In preparation for Advent, the children heard about prophets. Looking at a figure of a prophet, they learned that there were prophets who lived a long time ago and that their job was to listen to God and tell the people what God was saying. They heard about one of the prophets, Isaiah, who lived before Jesus was born. He said that the people who walk in darkness will see a great light (Isaiah 9:2). The children were asked if they have ever been in a dark place, so dark that they couldn t see. Some children responded that it has been that dark in their room sometimes. A couple of children talked about going to Luray Caverns on a field trip. The children were then asked how it felt to be in a place that was so dark that they couldn t see. Some children replied that it was scary and frightening. Then we talked about how it feels when the light gets turned on in that darkness. Some of the children responded good and it makes us feel safe. One child said it helps us find our way out. We lit a candle and the children were shown a prophecy card of Isaiah 9:2: The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. On those who live in the land of deep shadow a light has shown. We focused on the first part of the prophecy. The children were asked to think about this great light that Isaiah might be talking about and what or who that might be. Some of the children responded God. As we spend more time with the Advent material, they will begin to associate the coming of Jesus with the coming of the Great Light. 8 Community Attention Foster Families will be at Trinity on December 1st My name is Marnie Allen and I work with Community Attention Foster Families (CAFF). At CAFF, we believe that religious institutions, because of their broad base and deep historical roots, possess a unique capacity to raise awareness about issues that greatly impact our community. Over the past several months we have had a rise in the number of children entering the foster care system. Locally, we have approximately 250 children currently in care for many reasons including abuse and neglect. As these numbers increase so does the need for foster families. CAFF is part of the City of Charlottesville and primarily serves children in Charlottesville, Albemarle, and Greene counties. We are the first agency that gets called when a child enters foster care in our area. Our goal is to recruit, train and support foster parents who live within 1 hour of the Charlottesville/Albemarle area so that these children can maintain connections to their home communities and work on reunification with their families. CAFF believes that together we can find and cultivate the families needed to nurture and support children who come into foster care. We hope that you can help spread the message that there is an urgent need for foster families in the Charlottesville/Albemarle area. I look forward to meeting you on December 1, 2013 and answering any questions you have about CAFF, fostering, and how we might work together in the future to help support our local families and children.
