All are welcome to share in Holy Communion. Ushers will direct you to the communion line which forms at the back of the sanctuary and moves up to the altar rail. If you wish to have the Pastor serve Communion in the pew, please inform one of the ushers. The bread is gluten-free. Receive the bread with open hands, then dip it into either the chalice of wine or the glass goblet containing grape juice. Egg-free wheat wafers are available upon request. If you prefer a blessing, place your arms in front of your chest. You are also welcome to remain in the pew and offer prayers. Thank you for bringing children to worship today. It is hard work to worship with kids, but it is such important work that helps them and the whole church. The sound of a child in worship is the sound of a new Christian being formed. The presence, energy, and noise of children are most welcome here. Our nursery is available as a quiet space for parents and children. Activity bags also are available there. EPIPHANY PRAYER JOURNEY ON WEDNESDAY NIGHTS IN THE FELLOWSHIP HALL - We meet in the Fellowship Hall at 6 p.m. to experience the prayer practice called Lectio Divina, holy reading - a way to pray with scripture. We listen to God and ask God to

5 guide our steps in this new year. The Journey concludes on February 1 st. Come to any or all of these events as your schedule allows. NEW MEMBER SUNDAY We will welcome new members on Sunday, February 26. If you are interested in joining the congregation, please talk with Pastor Amy. WILL YOU SERVE? Thank you to all who have answered the call to serve on committees and council. We are in a time of growth and new energy and a time of transition in leadership. We now have two more openings for two year terms on Stewardship Committee and Property and Management Committee. These committees serve with lots of support with the pastor and the council. Please tell Pam Torresdal or Megan Buckingham if you are willing to serve. REFORMATION ANNIVERSARY EVENT-Good Shepherd Member Professor Wanda Deifelt will be our guest preacher and presenter on Sunday, February 5. Professor Deifelt is a scholar of Martin Luther and serve on Lutheran-Roman Catholic Commission on Unity. She will offer a forum on February 5 as well. PASTOR MARION PRUITT-JEFFERSON TO SERVE AS ASSISTANT PASTOR- The Congregation Council is excited to announce that Pastor Marion Pruitt-Jefferson will serve as Assistant Pastor for the next year. This is a contracted position for approximately ten hours of service per week. Since this is a contracted position, it does not require a call committee or congregational vote. This position is made possible by the generous gift of an anonymous member. The council hopes this position can be a regular part of the budget for 2018 and following. See the newsletter for more details. Pastor Marion s one year contract runs from February 1, 2017-January 31, PRIVILEGE, POWER AND RACISM DIALOGUE - Beginning in February, you are invited to learn in community through dialogue and questions about privilege, power, and the persistence of racism. Time together begins with a Dialogue and Dessert event on February 2 at 7pm at Decorah Congregational UCC to introduce concepts, definitions, and to lay the groundwork for small group conversation. You are then invited to participate in a specific small group for six weeks of continued dialogue, study, and reflection. You can see a list of all groups at decorahucc.org/lets_talk/and sign up for a group there. Pr. Amy, Jon Ailabouni and Sara Hanssen are offering a group Tuesdays at 7pm at Good Shepherd. These small groups are safe space but likely will raise uncomfortable questions. INDIVIDUAL PEW CUSHIONS AVAILABLE - If you desire seat or back comfort, please pick up one of the cushions on the chair near the sanctuary entrance. Thanks to Pastor Marion Pruitt-Jefferson, we have five on loan from First Lutheran Church. We plan to have a permanent collection.
