St. Philip s Episcopal Church 342 East Wood Street Palatine, Illinois (847) The Rev. Dru Green Interim Priest Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, In the fifteenth chapter of his first letter to the Corinthians Paul says: If there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised; and if Christ has not been raised, then our proclamation has been in vain and your faith has been in vain. Paul reminds us of the central importance of the resurrection to our Christian Faith! The Spiritual Formation Committee has invited everyone in the parish to participate in a Lenten bible study of the resurrection as is presented in the four Gospel accounts of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. This Scripture covers about five chapters and 138 verses. In an evening workshop on February 18 th we discussed the portions from Matthew and Mark. In March we have scheduled two Saturday morning workshops when we will be discussing Luke and John. SATURDAY, MARCH 2 9:30 TO 11:00 A.M. GOSPEL OF LUKE (coffee and refreshments served) 1 1
SATURDAY, MARCH 16 9:30 TO 11:00 A.M. GOSPEL OF JOHN (coffee and refreshments served) One can also read and reflect on these passages on one s own: Mark chapter 16; Matthew chapter 28; Luke chapter 24; John chapters 20 & 21 Two questions that help us focus our inquiry are: What does the Church believe about the resurrection of Jesus? What do I personally believe about the resurrection of Jesus? In mid-march we will mail out our worship schedule for Holy Week and Easter Day which falls early this spring (March 31 st.) In the Name of Christ, Fr. Dru Mission Statement SEEK a deeper knowledge of Jesus Christ SHARE the love and compassion of Christ SERVE others with open hearts SHINE with Christ s light, illuminating our world 2

by Denise Hanshaw Many songs have been dedicated to love; some happy and some sad. Some say, Love Hurts. We all know that. But sometimes when love hurts, it is not because we were slighted by someone we love. Sometimes love hurts for other reasons beyond our control. Mothers who have to leave their newborns in the hospital until they are well enough to come home know all too well that love hurts. The pain of seeing our loved ones sick or injured has been felt by most of us at sometime in our lives. Our hearts ache when we lose somebody that we love. This month, as we show our love to that special someone, let s think about how we can ease the pain of those whose love has unintentionally hurt them. In order to get your creative juices flowing, I would like to offer some suggestions: Crotchet fans and knitters out there, I would like to suggest crafting a baby afghan to donate to either a local hospital or a foundation that gives the afghans to babies in need. I still have the afghan and cap that was crocheted for Faith while she was in the NICU; I will treasure it always. I ve heard of a church where a group of women get together once a month to make heart-shaped pillows. The pillows are donated to a local hospital to give to the women who are fighting cancer so they know they are not alone. I ve also heard of a foundation that collects toys to put into a treasure chest. Then kids who bravely go through chemotherapy can choose from the treasure chest. I heard it helps make the trip to the hospital a little less traumatic. Finally, remember those who have lost loved ones. This might be a lonely time of the year for those that could use a hug. There s a song that we sang in my Catholic school that had the phrase, They will know we are Christians by our love. Let s make an effort to spread that love this month. Please remember that no act of kindness is too small. 8
by Michelle Wiejaczka Here we are in week three of Lent--did you give something up or take something on? Both concepts are appropriate in a stewardship discussion. As stewards, our contribution can take the form of giving something up or taking something on and sometimes they are the same. For example, showing up to help Green Thumbs is taking something on and giving something up, your time. Between now and November, I will be writing about the eight letters S-T-E-W-A-R-D-S. So here goes. S is for share. It is one of the four words of our mission statement. During our annual giving campaign we encourage members to share their time, talent and treasure. At almost every service we share the peace with one another. In Eucharistic Prayer A you will find "...in your mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature,..." and in Eucharistic Prayer D, "Grant that all who share this bread and cup may become one body and one spirit..." We share our stories at coffee hour and other social gatherings. Stories that include our joys and triumphs, worries and concerns. This month and thereafter, reflect on ways you and your family have shared with your St. Philip's family in the past, and the benefits, both tangible and intangible, you derived from doing so. Prayerfully consider what you and your family are willing and able to share now, in the coming months, and for the 2014 Annual Giving Campaign. Michelle Wiejaczka Stewardship Chair 9
by Cindy McIntosh St. Philip s Parish Profile is complete! It has been sent to the Diocese where Bishop Lee has reviewed and approved it. Anyone in our parish can download a copy of our profile. The link is on our website, We also have paper copies in the back of the church. We ask that every family take only one copy (to save on printing costs). Our rector s job description will be posted on the Diocese s website. The Diocese will forward suitable candidates resumes to us. At the Search Committee s last meeting, we planned the questions to start the interview process. We also compiled questions for our group phone interviews. After receiving a resume, we will mail the candidate a letter thanking him or her for being interested in St. Philip s and asking the candidate to answer five essay questions. The answers must be sent back to us within ten days. Please pray that the candidates respond to our questions and requests and that God will guide our future rector to us. Peace and Love to all! The Search Committee Barb Moriarty, Jeff Cappella, Marc Hanshaw, Judy Zawacke, Jeanne Svendson, Marvin Hill, Cindy McIntosh 10
