Garden Ministry: We are searching for new members to volunteer for this wonderful ministry. You don t need a green thumb just helping hands. The Church of the Incarnation Garden Ministry is responsible for maintaining the flower garden beds around both the rectory and the church. Members of the committee meet in the early spring to clean out these gardens, make plans for new plantings, and assign responsibilities for weeding and watering throughout the upcoming growing season. The committee assisted in the design of the new butterfly garden, but is not responsible for its maintenance. 4 Page Three Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time...July 16, 2017 All Faith Formation communities are now in recess. Faith Formation Registration: Many returning Faith Formation families Grades K-6 have not yet registered for the 2017/2018 sessions. Please be mindful that there is a $10.00 late fee now applied to your application. New families please call the Faith Formation office: (860) to set up an appt., with Noranne Wamester. Registration for Grades 7 and 8 will take place in June. Registration for Grade 9 and the Sacrament of Confirmation will take place in late September. Letters will be sent to grade nine families at that time. This is a separate registration from all others. The Faith Formation Office is seeking three adult Catechists for First Grade at Emerson-Williams School for the Season. All Catechists must have a background check completed which is provided by the rectory office. They must also attend a Protecting God s Children Workshop. Training will begin in August for all new Catechists. Please call Noranne Wamester at (860) This ministry promises to be a prayerful/rewarding experience. We have two candles located in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel. The Sanctuary Light enclosed in red glass burns to signify that the Blessed Sacrament is present in the Tabernacle in the Chapel. The Blessed Virgin Mary Candle is mounted on the wall near the Blessed Virgin Mary Statue. 5 Page Four Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time...July 16, 2017 A Weekly Bible Study 15 th Sunday in Ordinary Time Isaiah 55:10-11 Many farmers concur that a sizable, consistent snow pack is nature s preeminent fertilizer. As the heavy winter blanket begins to melt, the ground slowly absorbs the water s nutritional benefits, making the earth fertile and fruitful. Second Isaiah uses this very simple imagery of water to offer a profound truth regarding God s sacred word: it penetrates the soul slowly and effectively, always achieving the end for which it came. In today s reading we might hear St. Paul calling us to greater hope and trust as he reminds us of the fleeting nature of our suffering. We may hear our Master Gardener Jesus speaking to us through today s Psalm response: Thus have You prepared my land, drenching its furrow and breaking up the clods of my heart. The Gospel, rich with its own imagery of good and bad soil, may nudge us with Jesus invitation to prepare the soil of our souls that we may understand with our hearts and be converted. We need only take one word, phrase or passage, turn it over quietly within our day and allow it to soften our hearts, penetrate our being, and move us to response or action. With God s help, this word will achieve the end for which the Lord has planted it in our hearts. How can the sacred word touch our lives more effectively? We allow the Word of God to penetrate slowly and deeply into the ground of our being, inviting us to listen to its message at ever deepening levels. We can easily do this by paying attention to a word, phrase or passage that captures our hearts. And this requires listening! We may actually be surprised by what the Spirit is revealing to us in our hearing. As we journey throughout our day we find opportunities to be reminded of this word or passage. 7 Page Six Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time...July 16, 2017 FRUIT OF THE WORD The seed is the word of God. The agricultural metaphors in all of today s readings give richness to the message that the word of God, cultivated in our hearts, bears much fruit in our lives. Creation itself awaits the redemption of all, even as our bodies await the resurrection. Just as we will rejoice in the fulfillment of God s word, so will all of creation sing for joy in the Reign of God. The word of God is effective and holy; it brings about exactly what it says. It is not futile or empty, but rich in meaning for those who hear and are healed. Those who hear the word of God and keep it will, with all creation, bear much fruit and sing for joy. TODAY S READINGS First Reading My word will achieve the end for which it was sent (Isaiah 55:10-11). Psalm The seed that falls on good ground will yield a fruitful harvest (Psalm 65). How did our liturgy come to be in Latin in the first place? In the first century, the dominant language in the regions where the church first flourished was Greek. Today in much of the world, almost everyone speaks at least a bit of English. Recently, the European Union even considered making English its official language, a curious proposal since only two English-speaking countries are members. Just as English is a unifying language today, it was hard to function in the ancient world without a smattering of Greek. Even the word Eucharist comes from the Greek for thanksgiving. For a long time, Greek was the language of worship, even in Rome. Slowly, society in the west shifted to a bias for Latin and against Greek. Latin first appeared in public prayer at the end of the second century, in the colonial outposts of North Africa. Soon, Latin became the language of culture, and so as fixed prayer forms were written, they were transmitted in Latin. From Rome and Africa, over the next four centuries, the new liturgical language of Latin spread north to Gaul and Britain. LISTEN Listen and attend with the ear of your heart.
