What began in 1970 as a circle of 12 friends meeting weekly for worship and fellowship has grown into Cathedral of Hope, a Vibrant, Inclusive, Progressive (VIP) congregation of the United Church of Christ. Founded in and serving beyond the LGBTQ community, Cathedral of Hope s mission is to reclaim Christianity as a faith of extravagant grace, radical inclusion and relentless compassion. Your presence here is a blessing to us, and we hope you will return often. The VISION of Cathedral of Hope is to be a community of hope proclaiming God s inclusive love, removing barriers to faith and empowering all people to grow in grace toward wholeness. Notes for Newcomers Restrooms are located near the double glass doors behind the Sanctuary. Private rest rooms are available off the hall to the right of the Hall of Heroes area. For more information about the church, please come to the Ministry & Visitor s Center located next to Sources of Hope bookstore. Our worship services are recorded for broadcast around the world. We make every effort to respect your privacy. However, if you would like to ensure that you are not seen on screen, please sit in one of the last five rows of pews in the center section. Large-print bulletins and assisted listening systems are available in the bookstore. In consideration of those seated around you, PLEASE, No Flash Photography during the service. PLEASE, Silence Your Cell Phone! Thank you. Good Morning, Cathedral of Hope United Church of Christ! This month we have focused our spiritual growth on working through change, using our spiritual discipline to work together on change as we live fully into our mission, vision and core values. HAPPENS Change means work and is sometimes represented by the change cycle that includes loss, doubt and discomfort. It also includes motivation, perspective, and understanding. The ability to let go and let God gives us some security in this process, reminding us that this work of change has as its purpose making more real the relationship we are invited into with God, with one another and with the world. Our sermon today will focus on the discomfort that change can bring. It is my belief that this discomfort can be a good thing, as it causes us to question, challenge, listen, and find deeper connections. Jesus moved the early disciples from a place of comfort to one of discomfort. He challenged their beliefs, their theological understanding, their way of seeing and knowing God. He challenged them to think about who their neighbor is, how to inherit eternal life, and how God works in the world. However, in their discomfort, he also motivated them to discover something new about themselves and the people around them, and encouraged them to live with a new motivation about life itself. The Gospel is one of Good News that should always be challenging us to go deeper and to discover God s order of things. Today, we find a world that is, for many, uncomfortable; this discomfort can challenge us to find the motivation to use our faith to co-create with God; to create heaven here on earth. If you are finding yourself in an uncomfortable place right now, I sincerely hope that you might hear the Spirit speaking to you, moving you through the change cycle to be motivated to use your faith to create change that will help you find meaning in the discomfort, motivating us all to make our lives more fulfilled, and the world a better place. You are an amazing spiritual and human being, and I pray that we will embrace the future as we worship a God who is with us and journeying forward. The sky is the limit! Sincerely, in Christ The Reverend Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas Senior Pastor HOPEQuotes My husband and I attended your church on Sunday with our son. We want to thank you and Cathedral of Hope for providing an amazing place for our son to worship. I truly felt the spirit of the Lord in your amazing church. My husband and I left feeling renewed and at peace. Thank you for everything you do to support our son s spiritual life. You are a blessing to many and encourage myself and others to believe love will win! (Sunday Feb 12) T. L. DFW, TX STAFF * Senior Pastor seniorpastor@cathedralofhope.com Rev. Plumptre ( ) wrote this text for an annual choir festival at Peterborough Cathedral, England, in The original version contained eleven stanzas to allow for the time it would take for the choir to process into the cathedral. Plumptre was a distinguished English scholar, lecturer, and preacher. During his lifetime he held posts at King s College, London, Queen s College, Oxford, St. Paul s Cathedral, and served as professor of New Testament, all in England. Arthur H. Messiter ( ) named this hymntune MARION for his mother. It has long been associated with this text since the hymn s appearance in Episcopal hymnals of the late nineteenth century. Messiter, English by birth, moved to the United States in He served briefly as organist at four different churches in Philadelphia, then moved to Trinity Church, New York City, where he also led a traditional English men and boys choir for the next thirty-one years.

4 LITURGY OF THE WORD EPISTLE LESSON Philippians 4: 4-9 Lee McLeod Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Keep on doing the things that you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and the God of peace will be with you. ANTHEM I Waited for the Lord from Hymn of Praise by Felix Mendelssohn Coretta Smith and Arielle Collier, sopranos Sanctuary Choir and Orchestra I waited for the Lord, who inclined unto me and heard my complaint. O, blessed are they that hope and trust in the Lord. Psalm 40: 1, 5 Worship Note Below PASTORAL PRAYER (9 A.M.) SACRAMENT OF HOLY BAPTISM (11 A.M.) Kaja B. Words and Music by Keith Getty and Stuart Townend Thankyou Music CCLI License # I Waited for the Lord The Anthem this morning is I Waited for the Lord by Felix Mendelssohn ( ). Mendelssohn was born into a German Jewish family but was baptized in 1816 on the advice of his uncle. His conversion was evidently sincere, as he composed many religious works in the course of his short life. I Waited for the Lord is from his Symphony No. 2, Opus 52, also called Lobgesang or Hymn of Praise. It features a beautiful soprano duet accompanied by choir, winds, and strings. The lyrics from Psalm 40 speak of patiently waiting for God to hear and answer our cries for help. 2

5 **GOSPEL LESSON John 16: One: God be with you. All: And also with you. One: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John. All: Glory to you, O God. Minister Isabel Marquez-E Jesus said, Very truly, I tell you, you will weep and mourn, but the world will rejoice; you will have pain, but your pain will turn into joy. When a woman is in labor, she has pain, because her hour has come. But when her child is born, she no longer remembers the anguish because of the joy of having brought a human being into the world. So you have pain now; but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. One: All: This is the Gospel of Hope. 10 Today in Children s Church The theme today is From Discomfort to Motivation. What does it mean to feel uncomfortable? We are going to tell about times in our lives when we did not feel comfortable and lacked motivation to do much of anything. We ll share how we feel when we are motivated. We ll ask what motivates or inspires you? Telling about someone we know who inspires us is a good reminder of being motivated by example. In the illustrated PowerPoint, Miriam, the Prophet and the sister of Moses, was inspired by God to play her tambourine and lead the people in a song of praise to God. We ll talk about people today who like to lead other people in prayers or songs or games and think about why some people are good at leading or inspiring others. Contact Dan Peeler at dpeeler@cathedralofhope.com if you have any questions about the Children and Families Ministry. The Prophet Miriam is motivated! Dan Peeler, Minister for Children & Families, and Charlie Rose create beautiful illustrations for use in the Children s Church PowerPoint lessons. Why We Use Incense in our Liturgy Ancient practice to be used on Ash Wednesday, March 1, 7:15 p.m. At certain services during the liturgical year, Cathedral of Hope uses incense during worship. Some, whose church background did not include this practice, have asked why we do this. We believe that worship should be experiential. We are most fully engaged when the senses of sight, sound, smell, taste and touch are stirred. Incense is one way in which the Church throughout history has done that. Moreover, the use of incense is a thoroughly Biblical concept. We see it commanded of the Jews (Exodus 25:29) and then used in worship in Israel from that point on. Notice the prophecy of Malachi 1:11, From the rising of the sun to its setting my name is great among the nations, and in every place incense is offered to my name. God actually anticipates the use of incense by all people in God s name. In the New Testament, we see Zechariah offering incense in the sanctuary when the angel of the Lord appears to him (Luke 1:8-11). Later, in Revelation, we see the elders holding golden bowls of incense, which are the prayers of the saints (Revelation 5:8). Incense is the symbol of our prayers rising up to the Lord. It is also symbolic of spiritual cleansing and has been used in Christian worship since ancient times. So, as you smell the incense in our services, remember the history and symbolism behind it, and try to let it enhance your experience of worship! 8 Open Men s Circle Tuesday, February 21, CLC Chapel, 7 p.m. Hosted by the NTX ManKind Project, the Open Men s Circle meets twice monthly from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The next meeting is on Tuesday, February 21,in the Congregational Life Center Chapel. Ash Wednesday is March 1 Why we use ashes as part of our liturgy Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, is observed on the Wednesday of the seventh week before Easter. The day is named for the practice of imposing ashes, an ancient practice and sign of repentance that is mentioned several times in the Bible, including Jonah 3: 5-9, Job 42: 6, Jeremiah 6: 26 and Matthew 11: 21. Early Christians adopted the use of ashes from Jewish practice as an external mark of penitence. Many modern congregations find this to be a meaningful part of the Ash Wednesday liturgy. Ashes symbolize several aspects of our human existence: Ashes remind us of God s condemnation of sin, as God said to Adam, Dust you are and to dust you shall return. (Genesis 3:19) Ashes suggest cleansing and renewal. In ancient times, they were used in the absence of soap. On Ash Wednesday, ashes are a penitential substitute for water as a reminder of our baptism. Ashes remind us of the shortness of human life, for, as it is said as we are buried, Earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust. Ashes are a symbol of our need to repent, confess our sins and return to God. The imposition of ashes You will have two opportunities to receive ashes this Ash Wednesday. The Interfaith Peace Chapel will be open from 11:45 a.m. - 1 p.m. for personal meditation with English and Spanish speaking clergy available for the imposition of ashes. Ashes will also be a part of Ashes on the Strip (Cedar Springs & Throckmorton) 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. and at the bilingual service at 7:15 p.m. in the church Sanctuary. Ashes are applied with the minister s thumb in the form of a small cross on the forehead of each person with the words, Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return. You are also invited to walk the labyrinth in the IPC Sanctuary throughout the day.

11 Black History Month at CoH Black History Month has historically been observed in February each year. It is meant to honor and recognize the incredible courage and witness of African-American s/heroes who have shaped our communities, our churches, and our nation. It is important to set aside a special time of the year for this purpose, but it is time to proclaim that every month matters! The United Church of Christ has a long commitment to public education and to education in general. Here at Cathedral of Hope United Church of Christ we are giving this special attention in three ways. First, we co-sponsored the screening of From Selma to Stonewall: Are we there yet? at Dallas Theater on February 12. The film delves into some of today s most explosive and discussed subjects: racial injustice, police brutality, transgender discrimination, LGBTQ homelessness, and the intersection of these issues Second, we are beginning a Sacred Conversation on Race: A Journey of Transformation. This 8-week spiritual journey, anchored in the UCC curriculum, White Privilege, Let s Talk will commence on Tuesday, February 21 at 6.30 p.m. The class is limited to 15 participants. For more information, see the article on page 8. You can register online at Lastly, we are working to establish an African-American/Black Council at Cathedral of Hope UCC to help inform, plan and deliver classes, forums, outreach, programs and other activities that will help us be the place of radical inclusion that our mission and vision calls us to become. If you are interested in being a part of this council, please SHIFT@cathedralofhope.com. Together we can make a difference. Thank you for celebrating Black History Month here at Cathedral of Hope. ($20 - $22 each candle burns approx. 100 hours) Lenten Book Study 2017: Focus on Spiritual Renewal and Growth Anyone thirsting for a more intimate and disciplined life of faith will find a rich wellspring in The Cup of Our Life: A Guide to Spiritual Growth. In this original, creative and practical book, Joyce Rupp shares how the ordinary cups that we use each day can become extraordinary sacred vessels that connect us with life and draw us ever closer to God. She explores how the cup is a rich symbol of life, with it emptiness and fullness, its brokenness and flaws, and all of its many blessings. We will be encouraging those at CoH who want to invest more in their spiritual growth to pick up this book in the Source of Hope bookstore or online. You can use this as a personal devotional during Lent and/or we will encourage you to join a small group, start a small group of your church friends or make this a regular part of a group you are already a part of at CoH. This is a practical and accessible book for all. We will also be creating a study guide for small groups that will be accessible online which means you don t need to purchase the book to participate in any book study. There will be a special in Sources of Hope where the book and our new CoH Lent Coffee Mug are a deal together for $19.49, but may also be purchased separately. Questions contact Rev. Erin at ewyma@cathedralofhope.com.

13 BUS TRIP! All in For Equality Advocacy Day in Austin Monday, March 20, State Capitol, 7 a.m. 7 p.m. Advance registration is required by March 8 to prepare constituentmatched materials and make strategic lobbying team assignments. Join us to have face-to-face conversations at the Texas Capitol about LGBTQ equality issues that matter most to you and your family. This is an opportunity for YOU to ask state leaders to pass inclusive policies that protect all Texans, including our children; and end discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity or expression. Event Sponsors: Cathedral of Hope, GALA North Texas, Human Rights Campaign, Coalition for Aging LGBT, Stonewall Democrats, ACLU Texas, Texas Freedom Network, Transgender Education Network of Texas, and Equality Texas. Our organizations are chartering buses to Austin so that North Texas LGBTQA voices will be heard at the state capital. Buses will be departing at 7 a.m. from Cinemark West Plano (Parker & Tollway) and at 7:30 a.m. from Cathedral of Hope. As we travel to Austin, you ll receive education on LGBT advocacy and enjoy breakfast. Upon arriving in Austin we ll gather with other LGBT advocates from across Texas, form groups, and visit the offices of our state representatives. You ll be back in DFW by 7 p.m. Don t miss this important and empowering event. A nominal donation is requested to help cover costs but nobody will be turned away for inability to pay. After you register for transportation, please also visit the Equality Texas website to sign-up as an attendee so that you will be assigned a group. A $5 fee is requested by Equality Texas to cover costs including training materials and lunch in Austin. Introducing Meals on Wheels Is your spiritual location that of connecting or serving? Meals on Wheels just might provide an opportunity that speaks to you. Meals on Wheels provides hot, nutritious, freshly prepared meals five days a week to Dallas County residents who can t provide for themselves due to illness, advanced age or disability. Without Meals on Wheels, these folks would go hungry. Join other Cathedral volunteers on Thursday, March 30. Beginning roughly at 10:00 a.m., you can actually take your first steps on this connecting and serving journey, investing about two hours toward providing Hope for someone who needs your presence. As a pen pal writing from one centralized address, you can serve by bringing a bit of joy and hope to those who are incarcerated, many of whom have no one on the outside who cares enough to write. One of the worst things about being incarcerated is the feeling of loneliness and isolation. Share the message of God s unconditional an inclusive love and grace through volunteering to write from one centralized address letters to inmates during their time of incarceration.
