Good Morning, Cathedral of Hope United Church of Christ! Just a couple of weeks ago I spoke passionately about how God is doing something new in our midst. I believe that when the prophets spoke of a time when old and young would see dreams and live into new visions, that this was not just a thing to hope for, it was a reality that they saw. Whenever God is present, whenever the people of God believe that God is still speaking, the Spirit of God is active, moving, living, breathing, and offering us a glimpse of a world that is becoming; a world that we are called to make real. Throughout the past four weeks we have been living into this new world. We have declared all things new. Brand New Attitude, Life, Miracles, and, today a Brand New Spirit. The Spirit is the breath of God that is spoken of throughout both the Hebrew and Christian Bibles. Some scholars note that there are seven attributes of the Spirit of God that represent the perfect and complete Holy Spirit that we often speak of. They are named as the Spirit of God, the Spirit of Wisdom, the Spirit of Understanding, the Spirit of Counsel, the Spirit of Power, the Spirit of Knowledge and the Spirit of the Awe of God. Regardless of how we understand the spirit of God, the Holy Spirit is real, for many, has lost prevalence in our lives and in our churches. The Holy Spirit has intentions, shows willfulness and discretion, loves, communicates, teaches, testifies and prays with and for us. The Holy Spirit was with God at the beginning and was present during Jesus life on earth, and because of Pentecost, a celebration of the Holy Spirit that we will remember again later this year, the Holy Spirit works in the lives of those who believe. I believe that the church must be filled with the fullness of the Holy Spirit and, for that to be true, person must be open to the moving of that Spirit in their individual life. The Spirit of God, wisdom, understanding, counsel, power, knowledge, and awe changes lives; changes your life. Today we welcome Bishop Yvette Flunder to our pulpit. Dr. Flunder is an American singer and Senior Pastor of the City of Refuge United Church of Christ in Oakland, California and Presiding Bishop of The Fellowship of Affirming Ministries. She was born in San Francisco, California and raised in the Church of God in Christ. There is no doubt in my mind that she is filled with the Holy Spirit and will bring our sermon series to a climax today as she embodies this Brand New Spirit that is calling us to revival, Cathedral of Hope United Church of Christ. 4 LITURGY OF THE WORD ANTHEM Moving Forward Words and Music by Israel Houghton and Ricardo Sanchez arr. Joel Mott and John Carlson Voices of Hope, Sanctuary Choir and Orchestra HEBREW LESSON Nehemiah 8: 1-3, 5-6, 8-10 All the people gathered together into the square before the Water Gate. They told the scribe Ezra to bring the book of the law of Moses, which God had given to Israel. Accordingly, the priest Ezra brought the law before the assembly, both women and men and all who could hear with understanding. This was on the first day of the seventh month. Ezra read from it facing the square before the Water Gate from early morning until midday, in the presence of those who could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive to the book of the law. And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, for he was standing above all the people; and when he opened it, all the people stood up. Then Ezra blessed God, the Most High, and all the people answered, Amen, Amen, lifting up their hands. Then they bowed their heads and worshiped God with their faces to the ground. So they read from the book, from the law of God, with interpretation. They gave the sense, so that the people understood the reading. And Nehemiah, who was the governor, and Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people said to all the people, This day is holy to the Most High God; do not mourn or weep. For all the people wept when they heard the words of the law. Then he said to them, Go your way, eat the fat and drink sweet wine and send portions of them to those for whom nothing is prepared, for this day is holy to our God; and do not be grieved, for the joy of the Lord is your strength. GRADUAL Choir: All: Speak, O Lord, as we come to you to receive the food of your holy word. Take your truth, plant it deep in us; shape and fashion us in your likeness. 5 **GOSPEL LESSON Luke 4: One: All: One: All: God be with you. And also with you. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke. Glory to you, O God. Jesus, filled with the power of the Spirit, returned to Galilee, and his reputation spread throughout the region. He began to teach in the Galilean synagogues and was praised by everyone. Jesus came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. Entering the synagogue on the Sabbath day, as was his habit, Jesus stood up to read. When the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to him, he unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written: The Spirit of God is upon me, because the Most High has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. God has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of our God's favor. And Jesus rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on him. Then he began to say to them, Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing. One: All: This is the Gospel of Hope. Praise to you, Creator, Christ, and Holy Spirit. **GLORIA Music by Tom Brooks & Don Moen Integrity s Hosanna! Music arr. Steven Couch; CCLI License # SERMON Brand New Spirit Rev. 9 WORSHIP NOTES This is a series of articles prepared by the Music and Worship Team to give insight and background into musical elements of our services. LET YOUR GLORY FALL Today s orchestral Prelude is an arrangement of a praise chorus by worship leader and songwriter Don Moen. It was the title track of his 1997 album of Christian worship music recorded live at First Baptist Church in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The exciting orchestral version is by premier church orchestrator and arranger Camp Kirkland. THIS IS A DAY OF NEW BEGINNINGS Brian Wren (b. 1936) wrote this text for a 1978 New Year s Day service at Holy Family Church, Blackbird Leys, Oxford, England. The original version was a series of questions and answers, beginning, Is this a day of new beginnings? Wren later revised the lyrics to this form for the United Methodist hymnal revision committee. Brian Wren is an internationally published hymn-poet whose work appears in hymnals from all denominations and traditions. Ordained in Britain s United Reformed Church, he lives in Decatur, Georgia, where he retired as the John and Miriam Conant Professor in Worship at Columbia Theological Seminary. Carlton R. Young (b. 1926) composed the tune BEGINNINGS for this Brian Wren text in As the lyrics were originally a series of questions and answers, the music reflects that format, ending all but the final line on a dominant fifth chord, creating an unfinished, questioning quality to the music. The harmonies are in the style of a 1930s Broadway ballad. Young, as a music educator, has taught at various seminaries in the United Stated and Europe. He is an ordained elder in the United Methodist Church and has served that denomination as director of music for churches in Massachusetts, Ohio, Texas, and Georgia. HOW CAN I KEEP FROM SINGING? Considered by many to be a traditional Quaker hymn, How Can I Keep from Singing? is actually an anonymous text set to a hymn tune by Baptist preacher Robert Lowry ( ), first published in the 1869 songbook Bright Jewels for the Sunday School. The third verse is by Doris Plenn, who learned the original hymn from her grandmother. It has been recorded by folk singer Pete Seeger, Catholic liturgical musicians Marty Haugen, Jeanne Cotter, and David Haas, and Irish songstress Enya. Our Anthem this morning is by American composer Gwyneth Walker. Walker, a native of New Canaan, Connecticut, and graduate of Brown University and the Hartt School of Music, has written over 300 compositions for orchestra, chamber ensembles, chorus, solo voice, and individual instruments. Her works have been performed nationwide in venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Washington National Cathedral, and The Ellen Show. Her musical style, while appealing to modern sensibilities, is traditional and accessible. My pieces always have melody and form and a rhythm that s right there for you, she says. CATHEDRAL OF HOPE WELCOMES REVEREND DR. YVETTE FLUNDER Bishop Yvette Flunder is a native San Franciscan and third generation preacher with roots in the Church of God in Christ. Bishop Flunder is an ordained minister of the United Church of Christ and holds both masters and doctorate degrees in Ministry from the Pacific School of Religion and the San Francisco Theological Seminary, respectively. In 2003, she was appointed Presiding Bishop of The Fellowship of Affirming Ministries, a multi-denominational coalition of over 56 churches and faith-based organizations from all over the world. Bishop Flunder is a trustee and adjunct professor at the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, California. She is an active voice for the Religion Council of the Human Rights Campaign, as well as for the National Black Justice Coalition. Bishop Flunder is a highly sought after preacher and religious educator as evidenced by her having spoken at divinity schools nationwide including those at Duke, Yale, Drew, and the New York Theological Seminary. She is the author of Where the Edge Gathers: A Theology of Homiletic Radical Inclusion, published by Pilgrim Press. In addition to her memorable sermons, Bishop Flunder is also known for her beautiful singing voice, made famous through her gospel recordings with Walter Hawkins and the Family, the City of Refuge Choir and Chanticleer. 7

Today in Children s Church The famous Bible tale of Jonah and the Great Fish (it was not a whale.) tells of a Prophet who is instructed by God to love his enemies, but chooses instead to flee from God. His bad choice results in his being thrown overboard, swallowed by a huge sea creature, and thrown up on the shore of his enemy after all. The emphasis in today s telling of the story, however, is on the brand new spirit that Jonah s enemies received after finally hearing God s word.
