2 Welcome to Cathedral of Hope! What began in 1970 as a circle of 12 friends meeting weekly for worship and fellowship has grown into Cathedral of Hope, a Vibrant, Inclusive, Progressive (VIP) congregation of the United Church of Christ. Founded in and serving beyond the LGBTQ community, our mission is to reclaim Christianity as a faith of extravagant grace, radical inclusion, and relentless compassion by being a people of hope proclaiming God s inclusive love, removing barriers to faith, and empowering all to grow in grace toward wholeness. If you are visiting Cathedral of Hope for the first time, we are glad to have you here, are blessed by your presence, and hope you will return often! If there is anything we can do to make your visit more enjoyable, please call on our Ushers to assist you. You re invited to use the restroom that corresponds with your gender identity or the restroom that is the safest and most comfortable for you. Gendered, multipleoccupancy restrooms are located near the double glass doors behind the Sanctuary. All-gender, single-occupancy restrooms are available off the hall to the right of the Hall of Heroes area. For more information about the church, please come to the Connect Center located next to Sources of Hope. Large-print bulletins and assisted listening systems are available in the bookstore. Good Morning, Cathedral of Hope United Church of Christ! The opening weeks of the calendar year take us through the beginning years of Jesus. They find us visiting with the Magi as they came to find Jesus and honor him with their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. They send us to the River Jordan to witness both the baptism of forgiveness (water) offered by John, and the baptism of fire (spirit) completed in Jesus, and today, they take us deeper into Jesus s public ministry as we witness the first miracle recorded. In our Gospel story today, Jesus turns water into wine at the wedding in Cana of Galilee. It is the evidence that many had been waiting for to prove to themselves that Jesus was not just an itinerant preacher but was anointed by God. Jesus was the Messiah they had been hoping for; the One who would set them free from Roman oppression. Following this first miracle of Jesus, many more would be recorded in the Scriptures. They came in many forms and included both the spectacular and what some might consider the ordinary. However, they convinced those who followed Jesus that he was indeed the Son of God. In the years following Jesus s death, resurrection, and ultimate ascension into heaven, the day of Pentecost would mark another outpouring, or evidence of God s activity in the world. This evidence was a new revelation of the Holy Spirit that was no longer just given to those whom God sought out for a special purpose. Now the Holy Spirit would be evidenced in all people who believed. Just at the Hebrew prophets said, the day had come when God will pour out the Spirit on all flesh; your children shall prophesy, your old will dream dreams, and your young shall see visions. (Joel 2:28) This Holy Spirit is a gift that we all are anointed with as we step more fully into relationship with God; when we are All In. Today, as we worship, we are invited to be open to the ways in which God reveals Godself to us individually and as a community of faith. To look for the moments when water is turned into wine both in the ordinary and the extraordinary miracles that we witness in and around us. It is in these moments that God reminds us that we are both blessed and called to be a blessing as we, together, make the miracle of God s new realm real and relevant here on earth, as it is in heaven. Blessings, Neil s NOTE The Reverend Dr. Neil G Cazares-Thomas Senior Pastor IMPORTANT Neil s NOTE INFO Connect Center If you are joining us for the first time, stop by the Info Bar in the Connect Center to meet and greet with volunteers and staff, and to pick up a special gift from us to you. **Temporary construction of the Children s Ministry area will mean a relocation for childcare, Children s Church and Youth Group on Sundays: Childcare Children are temporarily relocated to the East Wing with an entrance outside to the right of the entrance doors. 4 GATHERING OF THE COMMUNITY **EXCHANGE OF PEACE Rev. Andria Davis Rev. Erin Wyma LITURGY OF THE WORD EPISTLE LESSON 1 Corinthians 12: 1-11 Mack McLeod Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed. You know that when you were nonbelievers, you were enticed and led astray to idols that could not speak. Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking by the Spirit of God ever says Let Jesus be cursed! and no one can say Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses. ANTHEM Give Me Jesus Traditional Spiritual; arr. Larry L. 5 **GOSPEL LESSON John 2: 1-11 One: All: One: All: God be with you. And also with you. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John. Glory to you, O God. On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and the disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, They have no wine. And Jesus said to her, Mother, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come. His mother said to the servants, Do whatever he tells you. Now standing there were six stone water jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to them, Fill the jars with water. And they filled them up to the brim. Then Jesus said to them, Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward. So they took it. When the steward tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the steward called the bridegroom and said, Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the inferior wine after the guests have become drunk. But you have kept the good wine until now. Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and the disciples believed in him. One: All: This is the Gospel of Hope. Praise to you, Creator, Christ, and Holy Spirit. **GLORIA Music by Tom Brooks & Don Moen Integrity s Hosanna! Music arr. Steven Couch; CCLI License # SERMON Brand New Miracles Rev. Dr. Neil G. 9 WORSHIP NOTES This is a series of articles prepared by the Music and Worship Team to give insight and background into musical elements of our services. LIFT EVERY VOICE AND SING Our Processional Hymn is known as the African-American National Anthem or Negro National Hymn. The words, written by James Weldon Johnson were first performed as a poem at a celebration of Lincoln s Birthday on February 12, Five hundred school children at the segregated Stanton School in Jacksonville, Florida, recited the words to introduce the honored guest, Booker T. Washington. The poem was later set to music by Johnson s brother, John Rosamond Johnson, in GIVE ME JESUS Give Me Jesus originated as an African-American spiritual written during the time of slavery in the United States. The lyrics are simple, but poignant whether we are in tragedy or triumph, whether we are weathering storms or counting treasures, we should long for Jesus above all. The fact that Give Me Jesus was written by people stripped of all dignity and possessions says much about what Jesus is, what he can give, and his very nature! This simple song teaches that we should seek Christ throughout our lives and long for his presence even as we die. The a cappella setting used today is by church musician, teacher, composer, and arranger Dr. Larry L. Fleming, the founder and long-time director of the National Lutheran Choir. CHANGED Our Recessional during this season is the chorus of a worship song by Paula Stefanovich. Solo artist, songwriter, and worship leader Stefanovich had her first song published at the age of 15. She is best-known for her songs Jerusalem and Yahweh, which was nominated for a Dove award in Changed is an honest and sincere ballad testifying to the life-changing power of Christ: I ve been changed by your glory, I ve been changed by your mercy, I ve been changed by your marvelous grace I will never be the same, I ve been changed. Sunday Flower Dedications If you would like to provide the flowers for our worship services in honor or memory of a loved one or simply to give thanks for God s blessings, you can reserve a Sunday in 2019 now. A dedication will published in our Weekly Worship bulletin the Sunday your flowers grace the chancel. Sundays February 3 & 17 Still Available pbjorling@cathedralofhope.com or , ext Today in Children s Church The children will be learning today about the first miracle of Jesus mentioned in the Gospel of John. The Gospel writer called these miraculous actions signs since each one was additional evidence of Jesus credentials as Messiah. This sign is instigated by Mary who tells her son that their good friend and host is about to suffer an embarrassment. He has run out of wine at a wedding in Cana. This book is for those frustrated by what they see happening in the world but not sure what they can do about it. Veteran organizer Gordon Whitman shows that we have the power we need to create a racially and economically just society. But it won t happen if we stay on the sidelines sharing social media posts and signing online petitions. We win only if we re willing to join other people in the kind of face-to-face organizing that has powered every successful social movement in history. Whitman describes five types of conversations that enable people to build organizations that can solve local problems and confront the greatest challenges facing our country from gun violence to climate change. This book is a road map for standing up to the bullies who ve hijacked our democracy and divided us against each other. Find your voice, make it heard, create lasting change, and live your purpose in the world! Grassroots organizing is our best hope.
