2 WELCOME to Worship! Cathedral of Hope is a vibrant, inclusive, progressive (VIP) congregation of the United Church of Christ. Your presence here is a blessing to us, and we hope you will return often. Cathedral of Hope began in 1970 with a circle of 12 friends, and has since grown into the world s largest liberal Christian church with a primary outreach to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer/questioning people. The VISION of Cathedral of Hope is to be a community of hope proclaiming God s inclusive love, removing barriers to faith and empowering all people to grow in grace toward wholeness. The MISSION of Cathedral of Hope is to reclaim Christianity as a faith of Extravagant Grace, Radical Inclusion and Relentless Compassion. Notes for Newcomers Restrooms are located near the double glass doors behind the Sanctuary. Private restrooms are available off the hall to the right of the Hall of Heroes area. For more information about the church, please come to the Ministry & Visitor s Center located next to Sources of Hope bookstore. Our worship services are recorded for broadcast around the world. We make every effort to respect your privacy. However, if you would like to ensure that you are not seen on screen, please sit in one of the last five rows of pews in the center section. Large-print bulletins and assisted listening systems are available in the bookstore. In consideration of those seated around you, PLEASE, No Flash Photography during the service. PLEASE, Silence Your Cell Phone! Thank you. BlessedAssurance LIFE-GIVING ACTS Good Morning, Cathedral of Hope! Over the past few weeks we have been exploring the actions of the resurrected Christ and the impact on the early believers and followers. We have discovered how the disciples were called to be resurrection witnesses and how, through the power of the Holy Spirit, they would lead the early believers in ways that would transform their lives and the lives of others. Our sermon series, Blessed Assurance, challenges us to claim, or reclaim, the good news of Jesus in our own lives. The hymn, Blessed Assurance, Jesus is Mine encourages us to make this Jesus personal, and the life of Jesus invites us into a blessed and holy relationship with the Divine in new and inspiring ways as co-creators with a God who wants to be intimately involved with us. This story of the resurrected Christ includes each and every one every one of us. It invites us into deeper relationship with God, leading us forward to a more relational, responsible and accountable identity as followers of Jesus. Today we explore this impact again as we listen to the ancient text of those who have gone before us. The impact of Jesus is, in many ways, more important than the historical fact of Jesus. The living Jesus offers us a set of values that guide us in our maturing faith. As we discovered last week, the disciple Peter was challenged to think about his relationship to Christ and was called to tend, feed and lead the sheep but this invitation was also personal, as he went deeper into his understanding of the teachings of Jesus. It is often said that actions speak louder than words. Today we will be challenged to make our faith speak through life-giving acts of grace and love. Sincerely, in Christ The Reverend Dr. Neil G Cazares-Thomas, Senior Pastor HOPEQuotes I enjoy the service and I know that God loves you no matter who we are. This is the only way I can get to a service is on here [the internet]. I live alone and have no one that is willing to go to church [with me] and there are a few that know that I am gay and I don`t know of a church that would except me as I am. I wish there was a church like yours here in my town. God bless you for the work you do. (PULSE Wednesday Worship, ) L. D., Norfork, AR. STAFF Rev. Dr. Neil G. The second movement, Largo, has been described as a reflective meditation by the soloist against the sustained accompaniment of the strings. In our Prelude today, the lute part is played on the harp by guest harpist Becky Scherschell. The Lord Is My Shepherd (on page 2) Today s Anthem is the sixth movement of British composer John Rutter s Requiem. This Requiem, completed in 1985, is a musical setting of parts of the Latin Requiem Mass with added psalms in English. The first performance of the full work was at Lovers Lane United Methodist Church in Dallas on October 13, The Lord Is My Shepherd was originally written in 1976 as a separate anthem. Quiet and serene, this pastoral setting of Psalm 23 offers a sweeping Rutter melody and a gorgeous oboe solo that hovers gently above the choir.

Thou shalt prepare a table for me against them that trouble me: Thou has anointed my head with oil and my cup shall be full. But thy loving kindness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. Psalm 23 Celtic Alleluia Alleluia, alleluia! Alleluia, alleluia! 5 **GOSPEL LESSON John 10: One: God be with you. All: And also with you. One: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John. All: Glory to you, O God. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas Rev. Todd Scoggins At that time the festival of the Dedication took place in Jerusalem. It was winter, and Jesus was walking in the temple, in the portico of Solomon. So the Temple Authorities gathered around him and said to him, How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly. Jesus answered, I have told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in God's name testify to me; but you do not believe, because you do not belong to my sheep. My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one will snatch them out of my hand. What God has given me is greater than all else, and no one can steal from God. God and I are one. One: All: This is the Gospel of Hope. 6 CELEBRATION OF HOLY COMMUNION WORDS OF INSTITUTION PRAYER OF CONSECRATION INVITATION TO THE FEAST DISTRIBUTION OF THE ELEMENTS MUSIC DURING COMMUNION TO OUR GUESTS Cathedral of Hope celebrates an open communion. We understand the sharing of the bread and the cup in Jesus name to be a representation of an ancient vision of God s feast for all peoples. We don t require you to be a member Worship of this Note church, below or any church, to participate with us in this feast of grace. Simply come forward at the ushers direction. After dipping a wafer in the cup, the minister will place it on your tongue and offer a brief blessing. If you prefer to serve yourself, cup your hands in front of you as you come to receive communion. Gluten-free Wafers are available from the silver intinction set at the center point. Please indicate your need to the ushers on the center aisle and they will direct you to the appropriate position. We ask that you serve yourself take a wafer and dip it in the juice in order to avoid cross-contamination by the server. TO OUR GUESTS It has become a tradition at the Cathedral of Hope to rise as we end our time of communion (as indicated by **), join hands as an expression of our unity in Christ, and lift them up in glory to God. We invite you to join as you are able, in body or spirit. Hymn of Promise In the bulb there is a flower; in the seed, an apple tree; in cocoons, a hidden promise: butterflies will soon be free! In the cold and snow of winter there s a spring that waits to be, unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see. There s a song in every silence, seeking word and melody; there s a dawn for every darkness, bringing hope to you and me. From the past will come the future; what it holds, a mystery, unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see. In our end is our beginning; in our time, infinity; in our doubt there is believing; in our life, eternity. In our death, a resurrection; at the last, a victory, unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see. You Are Lord You are Lord, you are Lord! You are risen from the dead and you are Lord! Nominated for the Camera D Or at Cannes Film Festival, it follows Oscar-winning actor Jeremy Irons as he investigates the shocking global scale and devastating impact of humanity s modern waste. For all the poisonous truths in Trashed there are also solid grass root solutions...crucial viewing for realists and alarmists both. (New York Daily News) Endangered Species of the Week: Bees and Butterflies Each Sunday during CoH s April Earth Month Celebration, our Children s Ministry will have an information table featuring issues and solutions about one of the endangered species we studied during Lent. Today is Bee and Monarch Day. For those who aren t aware of the seriousness of the alarming disappearances of Honey Bees, consider the fact that 1/3 of our food source is pollinated by them. Likewise the Monarch Butterfly population has declined by 90 percent over the past two decades, from about 1 billion butterflies in the mid-1990s to just 35 million. What are we going to do about it? Earth Month: Religion & Environmentalism Forum THIS Saturday, April 23, Fellowship Hall, 10 a.m. 12 p.m. Through this forum, diverse panelists will have the opportunity to share their perspectives about Religion and Environmentalism. We will explore questions such as: What is the role of organized religion in protecting the planet? What do people of faith have to say about this critical subject? What is our role as Christians? What can we do now? Panelists include: Green Dallas (Dallas Zero Waste Division); Dan Peeler, the Secular Order of St. Francis and St. Clare (Cathedral of Hope); Rev. Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas, Senior Pastor (Cathedral of Hope); and Dr. Melanie Harris, Associate Professor of Religion and Environmental Ethics (Texas Christian University). 9 Recycle Your Old Athletic Shoes Collection Table NEXT Sunday, April 24 following each service Did you know that it can take up to 1,000 years for the soles of athletic shoes to break down in a landfill! Let s be part of the solution for keeping athletic shoes out of the landfill let s recycle those shoes. One of our Lenten book study groups has taken on the project to have a collection table available under the bell wall on Sunday, April 24 to receive your old athletic shoes. In Dallas, shoes can be recycled in two ways: decent ones cleaned up for the homeless, or, the soles shredded and used to make the surface of tracks, playgrounds, etc. Contact Pat Saxon at spiritsister26@aol.com with questions or for more information. Today in Children s Church We will tell the tale of Tabitha, who was a very generous woman and made clothing for all the poor children of her town. We will discuss people we know who are always doing nice things for other people. Because of her kindness and generosity, Tabitha had a lot of friends who loved her very much, and when she became sick and died, her friends were very sad. Some of them knew the Apostle Peter had been a close friend of Jesus and thought that, since Jesus had brought people back to life, maybe Peter could bring Tabitha back to life as well. The story tells us that Peter actually did bring Tabatha back to life, but not before he got down on his knees and prayed. Turning toward the dead woman, he said, Tabitha, get up. She opened her eyes, and, seeing Peter, she sat up. He took her by the hand and helped her to her feet. Then Peter called for the other followers of Jesus, especially the widows, and presented her to them alive. Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Nobel Peace Prize winner and Chair of South Africa s Truth and Reconciliation Commission, with his daughter, the Reverend Mpho Tutu, offer a manual on the art of forgiveness Each of us has a deep need to forgive and to be forgiven. After much reflection on the process of forgiveness, Tutu has seen that there are four important steps to healing: Admitting the wrong and acknowledging the harm; telling one s story and witnessing the anguish; asking for forgiveness and granting forgiveness; and renewing or releasing the relationship. Forgiveness is hard work. Sometimes it even feels like an impossible task. But it is only through walking this fourfold path that Tutu says we can free ourselves of the endless and unyielding cycle of pain and retribution. The Book of Forgiving is both a touchstone and a tool, offering Tutu s wise advice and showing the way to experience forgiveness. Ultimately, forgiving is the only means we have to heal ourselves and our aching world. Citronella Candle Sale All Citronella WoodWick Candles are discounted 50%. Neil on p. 8. Keyword: AUCTION Youth Leader Assistants Sundays, Congregational Life Center Chapel, 1 p.m. Our 1 p.m. youth group is growing, and we want to add new team members to help the established youth leaders. Assistants do not need to be bilingual, and won t have to teach immediately, but can work towards that. We do expect those who work with our youth to be at least 25 years of age, complete a Young People s Ministry Volunteer Application, and to submit to and pass a background check. Scheduling is flexible. Keyword: YOUTH What is an Interim Director of Advancement? The primary purpose of this title is to underline the fact that we currently don t have a Director of Advancement nor an office associated with that function. The role of the Interim Director is as follows: 1) to create the infrastructure associated with such an office, and 2) to establish or re-establish all policies and procedures associated with fund-raising in general and, in particular, with Stewardship Programs, Major Gift Programs, Legacy/Endowment Programs, and special events. The office will also coordinate the fundraising of all other entities associated with the Cathedral so as to avoid redundancy and competition. Recognition of gifts will also be coordinated by this office. It is also our hope that having an office which is fully functioning will attract the highest quality of candidate when we advertise for a full-time Director of Advancement. Please feel free to contact Bob Shea with any inquiries or suggestions at bshea@cathedralofhope.com. TRIBUTES Tributes that reach the office by 5 p.m. on Tuesday will be printed in the coming week s bulletin. Tributes that reach the office afterwards will be printed in the following week s bulletin. A minimum gift of $20 is suggested. Why do we change language at Cathedral of Hope? Cathedral of Hope is a place of radical inclusion. It is one of our key core values. As a church that is vibrant, inclusive and progressive we choose to use inclusive language which means that we affirm and celebrate the many images of God that are found in Scripture. Using inclusive and balanced language enables us to understand God more accurately and encourages us all to explore the vastness of God beyond gender and gender identity. The truth is that most lyrics of songs and translations of Scripture were written in another age, and they are riddled with sexist language which uses patriarchal/masculine images of God/Christ. We change language here at Cathedral of Hope to open ourselves up to the diverse nature of God who is beyond gender and to the risen Christ who is most uniquely expressed through the Holy Spirit with us both feminine and masculine. As a spiritual community we encourage one another to stretch our imagination and to both celebrate and affirm the God who made humankind, both female and male, in the likeness and image of God.
