Your presence here is a blessing to us, and we hope you will return often. The VISION of Cathedral of Hope is to be a community of hope proclaiming God s inclusive love, removing barriers to faith and empowering all people to grow in grace toward wholeness. PLEASE, Silence Your Cell Phone! Thank you. CoH SUNDAY Worship In & Out: INVITE Good Morning, Cathedral of Hope United Church of Christ! What an extraordinary month we are having here at CoH! This is anniversary month and throughout this period we are finding ways to celebrate 47 years of bringing and being hope, both inside and outside of the church. This has been the theme of our sermons throughout July as we have thought about the ways we can make a difference in our world. Though our efforts to connect and serve, we find ourselves sharing our lives in such a way that both ourselves and others are transformed. This is the work of the Holy Spirit that moves through us, wherever we find ourselves. Today we have been encouraged to offer this gift to others to invite others to the table of grace at which we have already found a place. To those of you who find yourselves here for the very first time, or who have returned again and again, welcome! This is your Cathedral of Hope. Church is not a building, an institution, or even an organization; church is people who gather together to meet at a table of extravagant grace to receive grace, to offer grace, and to extend grace through acts of kindness and hospitality. It was, and is, this invitation of Christ that the Church must offer. If we have found love, we must offer love. If we have found relationship, we must offer relationship. If we have found meaning and purpose in a transformed life that has been blessed by God, then we must give it away, offer it out, share it. These are the things of God, and they are the things of the people of God who want to help bring to fulfillment the promises of God to create a new world: a vibrant, inclusive and progressive world of extravagant grace, radical inclusion and relentless compassion. This is the church that both looks out and is reflected in, as we together work in partnership with God to reclaim a Christianity that has lost its way a Christianity that has forgotten the ways of Jesus. Next Sunday we will celebrate Anniversary Sunday. We will welcome Reverend Elder Troy Perry back to Cathedral of Hope. We will invite everyone to the table and celebrate, both in worship and in our Hope Takes Flight party on Sunday afternoon, the grace and love of God that have been shown to us, and we will covenant again to make real this work as we make deeper connections with one another, as we serve a world in need, and as we invite others to the transforming work of the Holy that meets us here today. May our shared experience of worship today inspire us to be better, do better, and live in the abundant grace of the Good News of God who created us good, yes, very good. Sincerely, in Christ The Reverend Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas Senior Pastor HOPEQuotes Thank you, Cathedral of Hope United Church of Christ, for your continued witness in the world and the opportunity to worship with you from a distance. It first appeared as a poem in the context of an 1860 novel called Say and Seal, written by her older sister, Susan Warner, in which the words were spoken as a comforting poem to a dying child. The tune was added in 1862 by composer William Bradbury ( ), who also added the refrain: Yes, Jesus loves me Bradbury is known for composing many hymn tunes, including Just as I Am, He Leadeth Me, and Savior, Like a Shepherd, Lead Me. Since publication as a song, Jesus Loves Me has become one of the most popular Christian hymns sung in churches throughout the world. Our Prelude this morning is a lush and beautifully elegant arrangement for handbell choir and chamber orchestra by Michael Glasgow. The words of Friedrich Schiller s Ode to Joy are sung during the final movement. Beethoven s majestic melody was adapted as a hymn tune, HYMN TO JOY, and is commonly sung in English-language churches with the lyrics Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee by Presbyterian minister Henry van Dyke. Today our services open with lyrics written in this century by Mary Louise Bringle, calling us to Sing a New World Into Being a world where all who worship find their lives and loves belong, and where the lines that once divided form instead the ties that bind. Mary Bringle is Professor of Philosophy and Religious Studies and chair of the Humanities Division at Brevard College in Brevard, NC. Andria Davis On their return the apostles told Jesus all they had done. He took them with him and withdrew privately to a city called Bethsaida. When the crowds found out about it, they followed him; and Jesus welcomed the crowd, and spoke to them about the realm of God, and healed those who needed to be cured. Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas Invite I Can Tell the World American composer and arranger of choral music, Moses George Hogan ( ) was best known for his settings of African American spirituals. Hogan was a pianist, conductor and arranger of international renown. His works are celebrated and performed by high school, college, church, community, and professional choirs today. His most famous work is The Oxford Book of Spirituals, created in Hogan was born in New Orleans in His family attended the A.L. Davis New Zion Baptist Church where his father was a bass singer and his uncle the Minister of Music and organist. An accomplished pianist by the age of nine, Hogan was in the first graduating class of the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts High School. He studied at Oberlin Conservatory of Music, Juilliard School of Music, and later continued his studies of classical music in Vienna. Hogan died at the age of 45 of a brain tumor. The Sanctuary Choir s a cappella Anthem, I Can Tell the World, is a fabulous example of Hogan s ability to capture the feel of a traditional spiritual in an arrangement that is just as much fun to sing as it is to hear! 3

We don t require you to be a member of this church, or any church, to participate with us in this feast of grace. Simply come forward at the ushers direction. After dipping a wafer in the cup, which contains non-alcoholic grape juice, the minister will place it on your tongue and offer a brief blessing. MUSIC DURING COMMUNION All Are Welcome Let us build a house where love can dwell and all can safely live, A place where saints and children tell how hearts learn to forgive. Built of hopes and dreams and visions, rock of faith and vault of grace; Here the love of Christ shall end divisions: All are welcome, all are welcome, all are welcome in this place. Let us build a house where love is found in water, wine and wheat; A banquet hall on holy ground, where peace and justice meet. Here the love of God, through Jesus, is revealed in time and space; As we share in Christ the feast that frees us: All are welcome, all are welcome, all are welcome in this place. Let us build a house where all are named, their songs and visions heard And loved and treasured, taught and claimed as words within the Word. Built of tears and cries and laughter, prayers of faith and songs of grace, Let this house proclaim from floor to rafter: All are welcome, all are welcome, all are welcome in this place. 11 Today in Children s Church Our Illustrated PowerPoint lesson is from the very ancient narrative in Genesis 16, in which we read about Sarah s servant girl, Hagar, being invited into the family, only to be excluded later. We will talk about a church always being a place of invitation, not exclusion. In those days, when men had more than one wife, Hagar was the mother of Abraham s older son, Ishmael. When Sarah s son, Isaac, was born, Hagar s invitation was suddenly rescinded. There could be only one heir. Contact Dan Peeler at dpeeler@cathedralofhope.com if you have any questions about the Children and Families Ministry. New PuppyLove (Kitties, Too) BRACELETS Best Friends Animal Society s mission is to bring about a time when there are No More Homeless Pets. They do this by building community programs and partnerships across the nation. Chavez for Charity donates 25% of their gross profits to this group. Dan Peeler, Minister for Children & Families, and Charlie Rose create beautiful illustrations for use in the Children s Church PowerPoint lessons. What the youth are learning this week: How do I stop doing the things I know I shouldn t be doing? The first thing Jesus did after his baptism was to spend 40 days in the wilderness, during which time he was tempted by the devil. And though we might think otherwise, Jesus really was tempted. In fact, the wonder of the incarnation is that in Jesus, God truly experienced all of human life, including temptations. That should give us comfort. We should also take comfort that virtually every person we read about in the Bible, from the Hebrew patriarchs, kings, and prophets to the New Testament apostles, struggled with doing the very things they knew they should not do. And yet, whether it was after worshipping a golden calf or denying Jesus, God consistently offered forgiveness and love to those who did what they should not. How do we stop doing things we know we shouldn t do? First, recognize that failures are endemic to the human experience. Christians call this confession. Christians confess together that we fall short of God s glory. And second, exhibit self-control over those things that tempt you, turning to God for extra strength. Christians call this prayer and self-examination. We do not do the things that tempt us because we are called to love our neighbors as we love ourselves. It s neighbor love that guides our actions. 12 The Joy of Serving From Melissa Cook as told to Rusty Gage My favorite quote in the world is from Mother Teresa, who said; Break my heart so completely that the whole world falls in. Well, honestly I have had a few of those moments in my lifetime and as hard as they have been, I wouldn t change anything. One of my more positive heartbreaking times has come from serving at BACH (our breakfast program that provides fresh, hot meals for those experiencing economic disadvantage). We feed and minister to upwards of 300+ people every Saturday morning. About 4 years ago, after much prodding from friends to go help, I finally went. I said, I ll go one time but after that no promises. I m not a morning person and I honestly didn t think I had it in me to feel comfortable around those types of people. While that sounds anything but politically correct, I was honestly afraid I would sit down and cry or just be awkward around them because I felt so badly for them. My first assignment at BACH was to walk around with cookies and desserts and ask who would like some. Well right away, I realized it wasn t nearly as awkward as I had feared. I asked at each table, Who would like a dessert? as they responded affirmatively, I would take the tray over and let them choose what they wanted. I asked at one table and a seemingly shy gentleman raised his hand and nodded. When I made my way over there, he said, I don t really want anything, but I noticed that you smiled at the people who said yes, and I just wanted you to smile at me. My heart literally broke for him at that moment, what a simple request, how could I refuse? I sat my tray down and said to him, I m going to make you a promise, I will do my best to be here every week and not only will I smile at you, I m going to give you a big hug. I hugged him and chatted with him briefly. His name is Richard - I call him sweet Richard. Since that day, I have missed very few Saturdays and I very rarely missed getting a hug from my dear friend. When I see him, my heart literally smiles all day! My job at BACH has changed several times, but Richard always manages to find me! I can hear his sweet voice saying, Miss Melissa I m here for my hug! Sometimes he comes back multiple times during the morning saying, he needs just one more hug. Yes, people come because their stomachs are empty, but many come because they need a hug, a smile or just a kind word. My heart breaks pretty much every week, but it s the best medicine my soul could ever receive. While their physical needs never seem to end, neither does their longing to be loved, even if it s just through a kind word, a smile and a hug. You can play a role in making this our most successful year ever by becoming a table captain. Organize nine of your closest friends who believe in equality and want to attend the best party in North Texas! The success of the dinner s distribution is due in part to the commitment of our Table Captains. Being a Table Captain allows you to give back to the community by supporting Cathedral of Hope as well as the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, all at the same time. As a Table Captain, you are the host! You organize attendees, collect admission, distribute tickets, and select table(s) for you and your guests. You are the liaison between Black Tie Dinner and your guests. Table Captains take on no additional expense, and the experience is as easy as it is rewarding. By becoming a Table Captain, you are committing to fill one or more tables of 10 (including yourself). To aid you in this process, Black Tie Dinner will provide you with a free online account to access our convenient, easy-to-use tools. Here, you can: Manage and select your table(s). Send invitations and collect payment from your guests. Manage your guest information including vouchers and meal selection. Affiliate with your favorite beneficiary. Please notify Leslie Frye, CoH BTD Liaison, at lesfrye@gmail.com if you become a BTD Table Captain for CoH or if you have been a table captain in the past and/or if you have already signed up to captain a table this year so that we can make sure that CoH is the beneficiary. 12
