1 WORSHIP TODAY April 8, 2018 Volume 5 Issue 14 9 & 11 a.m. Worship Services Second Sunday of Easter...Through You The Human Voice Rev. Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST INSIDE A Note from Neil Order of Worship Welcome to CoH! Reflect Service New Entry for a New Era Coming Out Workshop

2 Welcome to Cathedral of Hope! What began in 1970 as a circle of 12 friends meeting weekly for worship and fellowship has grown into Cathedral of Hope, a Vibrant, Inclusive, Progressive (VIP) congregation of the United Church of Christ. Founded in and serving beyond the LGBTQ community, our mission is to reclaim Christianity as a faith of extravagant grace, radical inclusion, and relentless compassion by being a people of hope proclaiming God s inclusive love, removing barriers to faith and empowering all to grow in grace toward wholeness. If you are visiting Cathedral of Hope for the first time, we are glad to have you here, are blessed by your presence, and hope you will return often! If there is anything we can do to make your visit more enjoyable, please call on our Ushers to assist you. You re invited to use the restroom that corresponds with your gender identity or the restroom that is the safest and most comfortable for you. Gendered, multiple-occupancy restrooms are located near the double glass doors behind the Sanctuary. All-gender, single-occupancy restrooms are available off the hall to the right of the Hall of Heroes area. For more information about the church, please come to the Ministry & Visitor s Center located next to Sources of Hope. Our worship services are recorded for broadcast worldwide. We make every effort to respect your privacy; however, to ensure that you are not seen on screen, please sit in one of the last five rows of pews in the center section. Large-print bulletins and assisted listening systems are available in the bookstore. Neil s NOTE Good Morning, Cathedral of Hope United Church of Christ! What an amazing experience of highs and lows Holy Week (including Easter) was. It took us on a journey to the cross and beyond to resurrection! I sincerely hope that you found your experience last week to be one that reminded you of our purpose: to follow in the ways of Jesus and to offer life-giving news to ourselves and our world. For the next few weeks we will be examining the voice of God, as we launch a new sermon series, God is Still Speaking. This is a phrase that our denomination has become famous for, speaking as a progressive voice in Christianity; that God did not stop speaking at the end of the Book of Revelation in the Christian Scriptures, but still speaks, as we listen. Throughout the Scriptures, both Hebrew (Old) and Christian (New), we see how ordinary people responded to God s voice, to God calling them to be and to do. God called Aaron and Moses, Abraham and Sara, Samuel, David, Mary, Joseph and the disciples. God s voice spoke to these individuals and they responded, speaking words that would cause others to turn their way toward God. Our world needs the Good News of Easter and Resurrection. We need, as I spoke of on Easter Sunday, to be foolish enough to believe that God is using each of us to help save the world from its folly. We need to be foolish enough to believe that God loves us so much that, in Jesus, God went to extreme lengths to show us. And we need to be foolish enough to speak that word of truth to a world that speaks hate in the name of God, rather than love. Today, I invite you to think of a God who is still speaking though YOU! God calls each of us to speak prophetic words to the world. God calls us to allow the voice of God to be heard through the words of our mouths and the actions of our hearts, bringing good news to those who have been turned off by the words and actions of an institutional Church that is consumed with power and control, rather than passionate about liberty and freedom. God is still speaking, but the voice of God must be heard by each of us, causing us to transform ourselves into disciples of Christ who are willing to live into the values that Jesus makes clear values of peace, love, unity, forgiveness, joy, hope, grace the Good News that God has put on our hearts to speak to our neighbor. As we worship in the main Sanctuary today, another group of people will worship in the Interfaith Peace Chapel. We will welcome people who find God for themselves through modern worship that we might give voice to others who want to know God and whose voice is just as important. It is with joy that we welcome the voice of God, in many ways, today and in the future. Sincerely, in Christ The Reverend Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas Senior Pastor STAFF * Rev. Dr. Neil G. 3 ORDER of WORSHIP April 8, & 11 a.m. Second Sunday of Easter GATHERING PRELUDE CALL TO WORSHIP **PROCESSIONAL HYMN Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus Words and Music by Helen H. Lemmel; arr. Gordon Schuster Quince Holman, cello; Jeremy Wayne, piano Christ Is Risen! Shout Hosanna! Rev. Dr. Michael Diaz WORSHIP NOTES Insight into the various musical elements of our services Words by Brian Wren Hope Publishing Company and by Christopher Wordsworth, adapted Music by Ludwig van Beethoven OneLicense.net License#A **The people w ill rise in body or spirit. HYMN TO JOY Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus Helen H. Lemmel, the daughter of a British Wesleyan Methodist pastor, who later emigrated to the United States, wrote both the words and melody for this song. The text is simple and forthright, directing us to center our eyes and spirit on Jesus. The tune reinforces the reverent, sincere attitude of the text. This morning s Prelude, a setting by Gordon Schuster for cello and piano, conveys this introspective seeking through rolling arpeggios and soaring melodies. Christ Is Risen! Shout Hosanna! This resurrection text by Brian Wren is packed with wonderful biblical images of the newness and life which Christ brings to our world a tree growing in the desert with healing leaves of grace, people walking form caverns of despair into a morning of gladness, and the triumph of Christ over the world s demonic chorus. The powerful lyrics are paired with HYMN TO JOY, an adaptation of Ludwig van Beethoven s majestic melody used in the finale of his Symphony No. 9 in D minor. In consideration of those seated around you, PLEASE, No Flash Photography during the service. PLEASE, Silence Your Cell Phone! Thank you. 1

4 **INVOCATION GATHERING OF THE COMMUNITY **EXCHANGE OF PEACE Rev. Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas Rev. Erin Wyma THE WORD HEBREW LESSON Jeremiah 1: 4-10 Minister Winner Laws Now the word of God came to me saying, Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations. Then I said, Ah, Most High God! Truly I do not know how to speak, for I am only a child. But God said to me, Do not say, I am only a child' for you shall go to all to whom I send you, and you shall speak whatever I command you. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, says your God. Then God put out a hand and touched my mouth; and then God said to me, Now I have put my words in your mouth. See, today I appoint you over nations and over dominions, to pluck up and to pull down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant. 5 **GOSPEL LESSON John 20: Rev. Dr. Michael Diaz One: All: One: All: God be with you. And also with you. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John. Glory to you, O God. When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Temple authorities, Jesus came and stood among them and said, Peace be with you. After saying this, the Savior showed them the marks of the crucifixion. The disciples were filled with joy when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, Peace be with you. As my Abba God has sent me, so I send you. And Jesus breathed on them and said, Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained. But Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, We have seen the Lord. But Thomas said to them, Unless I see the mark of the nails, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in the spear wound, I will not believe. A week later the disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, Peace be with you. Then Jesus said to Thomas, Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt, but believe. Thomas answered him, My Lord and my God! Jesus said to him, Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe. One: All: This is the Gospel of Hope. Praise to you, Creator, Christ and Holy Spirit. **GOSPEL RESPONSE Celtic Alleluia Words and Music by Fintan O Carroll and Christopher Walker, adapted Fintan O Carrol and Christopher Walker OneLicense.net License #A SERMON God is still speaking through you Rev. 6 CELEBRATION OF HOLY COMMUNION WORDS OF INSTITUTION PRAYER OF CONSECRATION INVITATION TO THE FEAST DISTRIBUTION OF THE ELEMENTS MUSIC DURING COMMUNION TO OUR GUESTS Cathedral of Hope celebrates an open communion. We understand the sharing of the bread and the cup in Jesus name to be a representation of an ancient vision of God s feast for all peoples. We don t require you to be a member of this church, or any church, to participate with us in this feast of grace. Simply come forward at the ushers direction. After dipping a wafer in the cup of non-alcoholic grape juice, the minister will place it on your tongue and offer a brief blessing. If you prefer to serve yourself, cup your hands in front of you as you come to receive communion. Gluten-free Wafers are available from the silver intinction set at the center point. Please indicate your need to the ushers on the center aisle and they will direct you to the appropriate position. We ask that you serve yourself take a wafer and dip it in the juice in order to avoid cross-contamination by the server. TO OUR GUESTS It has become a tradition at the Cathedral of Hope to rise as we end our time of communion (as indicated by **), join hands as an expression of our unity in Christ, and lift them up in glory to God. We invite you to join as you are able, in body or spirit. We Walk by Faith We walk by faith, and not by sight: no gracious words we hear Of One who spoke as none e er spoke, but we believe you re near. We may not touch your hands and side, nor follow where you trod; Yet in your promise we rejoice, and cry My Lord and God. Help then, O Lord, our unbelief, and may our faith abound; To call on you when you are near, and seek where you are found. We walk by faith, and not by sight: no gracious words we hear Of One who spoke as none e er spoke, but we believe you re near. Words by Henry Alford, adapted; Music by Marty Haugen G.I.A. While we have always sought to be that place of refuge and hope, we remember incidents in our past when our congregation s very existence was threatened by outside groups and individuals. The entrances to our property were intentionally discreet, in part, because we wanted our facilities to remain safe. We are now entering a new era. In order to live into our bold mission to reclaim Christianity as a faith of extravagant grace, radical inclusion, and relentless compassion, we recognized the need to build a prominent new entrance one that would not only let our community know who we are, but that all are welcome here. If you are interested in learning more about our New Entry for a New Era, please join Rev. Neil for a brief information session TODAY after the 11 AM service in the Choir room. 6

9 Today in Children s Church On the Second Sunday of Eastertide, we remember that Easter is not just a day, but another Church Season that lasts until the Day of the Ascension. One of the most famous stories of the Season is about a man history unfairly calls Doubting Thomas. One of Jesus most loyal Disciples, and the only one identified as a twin, Thomas wants clarification of the report that the other Disciples have seen the resurrected Christ. Are you sure it was Jesus? he asks. The answer to his question confirms the Truth. Contact Dan Peeler at dpeeler@cathedralofhope.com if you have any questions about the Children and Families Ministry. 10 Sacred Conversations on Race: A Journey of Transformation Tuesday Evenings: 6:30-8 p.m., POSTPONED Begins May 1 to June 12, CLC 107 Facilitators: Winner Laws and Mary Warejcka In August of 2016, the national leadership of the United Church of Christ made available its curriculum Sacred Conversations on Race: White Privilege, Let s Talk. Indicating the urgency of this work, Rev. John Dorhauer, General Minister and President of the UCC, asserts: One of America s lingering realities is the unprocessed grief, shame, fear, anger, and guilt of living in a culture of racial inequality. It is a heavy price we pay to maintain our silence in the face of such evil, no matter what benefits we accrue because of it. On Tuesday, May 1 at 6:30 p.m., we will begin a six-week spiritual journey anchored in the UCC curriculum and our own experience (copies of the curriculum will be provided to participants). Our hope is that the importance of this topic will call a diverse group of 15 people who are committed to this transformative work and who are willing to be both honest and vulnerable in our sacred conversations. Please prayerfully consider joining us. The first evening will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a shared meal and last 2 hours. All other weeks will run from 6:30 to 8, and we ask that participants hold an extra 30 minutes for discussion as needed. Minister Winner Laws at winner.laws@gmail.com with any questions. God is Still Speaking Bible Study Tuesdays nights, April 10 to May 15, 7 8 p.m., East Wing Rm 195 During April and May, we will be reflecting on and studying the passages from Scripture that are highlighted during our God is Still Speaking Sunday sermon series. We will explore the stories of those biblical moments when God speaks in profound, unsettling, inspiring, and challenging ways, as well as the ways in which God still speaks to us and through us today. No registration necessary. Bring your Bible. Bring a friend. Contact Rev. Erin at ewyma@cathedralofhope.com with any questions. July 7-15, 2018 We have 15 people going on the mission trip to Colorado Springs, Colorado. YOU have the chance to go with us as a sponsor! Each day you will get to experience this trip through the eyes of our youth. You will be on the trip with our youth, as a flat Stanley working alongside our youth and receiving daily reports about what is happening. The United Way reports that over the last three years, nearly every statistic on homelessness in the Springs has been on the rise. Last year alone, individuals in a state of homelessness was up nearly 6% with youth homeless up 7%. Homelessness is just one symptom of poverty in the community. Our youth will participate in building projects for families in transitional housing, outreach events to love on the community, tangible service projects to meet the food and shelter needs of individuals living in homelessness, and have many opportunities to share the Gospel to families that find themselves on hard times. It is our desire to support, dignify and encourage sustainable growth in this great city. We want you to have the opportunity to share this experience with our youth by partnering with and sponsoring one of the CoH attendees. Sponsorship is just $350 and will include pictures and videos of you (as a flat Stanley) and the youth during the trip. We have fifteen youth and adults that need sponsorships. Your sponsorship will allow you to participate virtually in this fun and life changing experience, as well as, investing in the future leadership of CoH. To support our youth, please contact Alan Miles, Youth Minister, at amiles@cathedralofhope.com because you do not want to miss this chance to Go to Colorado with the Youth. For additional info, you can stop by the table in the fellowship hall in between and after services. 9

Exploring Small Group Ministry Meeting Sunday, April 29, p.m., CLC 195 Have your ever led a book study, spiritual class or theological study group? Have you ever led, in the past or currently, a Circle of Hope Group? Do you have any experience in pastoral ministry or do you feel a call to engage in more pastoral way in the small group setting? This meeting is for you! We realize that Cathedral of Hope is a large place and it is easy to get lost or not find connections that are meaningful to you and your family. We also know that experiencing life with other people and walking alongside one another is the lifeblood of living out the Gospel of Jesus. Jesus called it discipleship. He did it with a small group. That small group changed the world. If you are interested or excited about the prospect of reorganizing and expanding our small group ministry at CoH consider attending this informational & vision casting meeting. Questions contact Rev. Erin at ewyma@cathedralofhope.com. Celebrating Your Service A Volunteer Appreciation Festival Saturday, May 19, 2 5 p.m. Cathedral of Hope and Dallas Hope Charities are throwing a party! This will also help ensure that we have enough food prepared for the event.
