PLEASE, Silence Your Cell Phone! Thank you. GIVING UP: OUR LIVES Good Morning, Cathedral of Hope United Church of Christ! Guilt, Control, Expectations, Superiority and Our Enemies have been the topics so far in our sermon series through this season of Lent. As you can tell, we have hit on some rather big topics these past few weeks; today we will turn our attention to Giving Up: Our Lives. In the coming weeks, we will live through the experiences of Holy Week, which takes us from life to death and, ultimately, to life again. We will witness nothingness and hopelessness and then we will see fullness and a hopeful people who proclaim a risen Christ. The Bible is full of paradoxes. Jesus tells us that those who give up their lives for others will live, that those who exalt themselves will be humbled, the weak will be made strong, that those who give will receive. Yet many of us are used to thinking of life in terms of beginnings and endings. The story of Jesus is one that calls us to give up our old categories and embrace God s larger vision of eternal life that begins in the here and now. It begins today. As we consider Giving Up: Our Lives, we are reminded of the paradoxes of faith in Christ, and live into a new reality, one that is counter-cultural, that goes against what we have been taught, what we have lived. Jesus reminds us that when we give up our lives, we will live. Just as Jesus would give up his life for us all, this was not the end of the story. There was, and there is, resurrection, not just at Easter, but every time we consent to give up our lives and step into the blessing of eternal life. This is both the good news and the news that leads us out of death, out of an empty tomb, leaving behind guilt, control, expectations, superiority, enemies and the many other things that you might have chosen to empty yourself/your cup of in this season of Spring Cleaning for the Soul. Today, we get ready to give up our lives and realize the potential that is offered as we allow the journey, the journey toward equality and fullness of life, to be our guide. Sincerely, in Christ The Reverend Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas Senior Pastor HOPEQuotes Thank you so much for sharing this service online. I was so touched and got lost in the worship! The word was well timed and beautifully delivered. I ve never attended a church where I as a lesbian could feel welcome and while I live out of town I felt drawn in and will drive over to visit your service live one of these days. Until we meet, continue this beautiful work. (PULSE 2-22) S.S., LongView, TX STAFF * Senior Pastor seniorpastor@cathedralofhope.com Rev. Andria Davis Associate Pastor adavis@cathedralofhope.com Rev. 3 ORDER of WORSHIP April 2, & 11 a.m. Fifth Sunday in LENT LITURGY OF PREPARATION PRELUDE CALL TO WORSHIP When Jesus Wept Music by William Billings ( ); arr. James Sclater David Burney, clarinet; David Moldenhauer, organ Rev. Andria Davis **PROCESSIONAL HYMN Lift High the Cross WORSHIP NOTES Insight into the various elements of our services Words by George William Kitchen, adapted; Music by Sydney Hugo Nicholson Hope Publishing House OneLicense.net License # A **INVOCATION **The people will rise in body or spirit. CRUCIFER Rev. Erin Wyma When Jesus Wept Composer William Billings ( ) was Colonial America s first significant composer. At the age of 24 he published The New- England Psalm-Singer, which is considered the first book of American music. One of his best known hymns, When Jesus Wept, is a simple, but poignant, canon (round) with a mournful, solemn melody perfectly wedded to the lyrics. James Sclater s arrangement for clarinet and organ, from his set of Five Old American Songs, uses interplay between the organ and clarinet to explore the canon characteristic of the melody. When Jesus wept, the falling tear in mercy flowed beyond all bound; when Jesus groaned, a trembling fear seized all the guilty world around. Lift High the Cross The original version of Lift High the Cross was written by George W. Kitchen, an Anglican clergyman, for a festival of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel held in Winchester Cathedral in Very likely the lyrics owe something to Emperor Constantine s vision in 312 of the Cross of Christ in the sky and the words, Cover designed by Charles Owen. Loving God, you have drawn your people into covenant, calling us to be faithful disciples who walk in the ways of Christ. By Jesus death and resurrection, you have offered us fullness of life, yet we often lose our path and blindly follow the ways of the world. Forgive us for choosing those things that separate us from you. Grant us the wisdom to know your will and the courage to obey. Lead us into deeper discipleship with you. Hear now, O God, our silent struggle to be faithful. Moment of Silent Confession WORDS OF GRACE 2

5 GRADUAL Choir: Holy Spirit lead me to the wilderness, beyond the music, beyond the noise. All that I need is to be with you, and in the stillness to hear your voice, **GOSPEL LESSON John 11: 1-6; 17; Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. Thanks be to God. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John. Words and Music by Peter Kipley & Bart Millard, adapted & arr. by David Moldenhauer Simpleville Music and Songs From The Indigo Room CCLI License # Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. Mary was the one who anointed the Lord with perfume and wiped his feet with her hair; her brother Lazarus was ill. So the sisters sent a message to Jesus, Lord, he whom you love is ill. But when Jesus heard it, he said, This illness does not lead to death; rather it is for God's glory, so that the God s Chosen One may be glorified through it. Accordingly, though Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus, after having heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was. When Jesus arrived in Bethany, he found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb four days. When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said, If you had been here, my brother would not have died. When Jesus saw her weeping, and the others who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. Where have you laid him? Jesus asked. They said, Come and see. And Jesus wept. The people in the crowd began to remark, See how much he loved him! But some of them said, Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying? Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. Jesus said, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of the dead man, said, Teacher, already there is a stench because he has been dead four days. Jesus replied, Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God? So they took away the stone. And Jesus looked upward and said, God, I thank you for having heard me. I know that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me. Then Jesus cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come out! And Lazarus came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, Unbind him, and let him go. Many of those who had come to console Mary and Martha, and saw what Jesus did, believed in him. This is the Gospel of Christ. Praise to Christ, the Word. 3

6 ANTHEM O Love Words by George Matheson ( ); Music by Elaine Hagenberg Sanctuary Choir and Orchestra Worship Note Below SERMON Giving Up: Our Lives LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST PRESENTATION OF OUR TITHES AND OFFERINGS See Text-to-Give on p. 13 OFFERTORY Draw Me Nearer Words by Fanny J. Crosby; Music by Diane Sheets; arr. Gary Rhodes Sanctuary Choir and Orchestra THE GREAT THANKSGIVING FOR LENT SURSUM CORDA God be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to God. Let us give thanks and praise to God. It is right to give God thanks and praise. Our hearts overflow with love for you So, we lift our voices with those who waited patiently, and with those who saw the fulfillment of your promises, joining the choirs of heaven and earth to forever sing your praise: SANCTUS WORDS OF INSTITUTION Continued from page 1 In hoc signo vinces (In this sign you shall conquer), and to the words of Galatians 6: 14 God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of Jesus Christ. The text sung today is a revision by Michael R. Newbolt, canon of Chester Cathedral, prepared for the 1916 Supplement to Hymns Ancient and Modern. Sydney H. Nicholson composed the hymntune CRUCIFER specifically for this text. The hymn first began appearing in North American hymnals in the 1970s, and now is part of hymnals of most mainline denominations in the United States and Canada. O Love George Matheson ( ) wrote the words to the hymn O Love that Will Not Let Me Go in The heart-felt words came to him spontaneously. He is quoted as saying, I had the impression of having it dictated to me by some inward voice rather than of working it out myself. I am quite sure that the whole work was completed in five minutes, and equally sure that it never received at my hands any retouching or correction. Contemporary choral composer Elaine Hagenberg set these lyrics to a stunning original melody carrying the message of a loving and faithful God with gorgeous sonorities and a depth of meaning. 4

10 Today in Children s Church In the story of Lazarus, we remember that Mary, Martha and their brother Lazarus were listed as three of Jesus best friends. They often hosted Jesus and his followers at their home in Bethany, and we learn later that Bethany was to be the last place he would visit before the Ascension. When Jesus had been told of Lazarus grave illness, but arrived at the home four days after Lazarus death, we are given the shortest verse in the Bible: Jesus wept. His grief for his friend was genuine, but his action was swift in demonstrating the power of God s love through miraculous intervention. Contact Dan Peeler at dpeeler@cathedralofhope.com if you have any questions about the Children and Families Ministry. Lazarus returns! Enthusiastically share with these little folks your college and / or career path. Your enthusiasm regardless of your experiences just may provide that single aha moment that changes a young life s direction. Blessing Bags A Testimonial My church, Cathedral of Hope, prepares blessing bags for the homeless. They are gallon-size Ziploc bags containing nutrition bars, toothpaste, water, toothbrushes, canned meats, utensils and a myriad of other things to help those in need. We take them home with us on Wednesday nights to have on hand when we encounter someone who is homeless. This morning, I left on foot for work with a blessing bag in hand, looking for one of the homeless gentlemen that stays near our home. I ran into Mike and handed him the bag, explaining that our church puts these together for the homeless. He smiled, said thank you, and was very grateful. I did not expect what happened next. I would have expected him to dig through the things in the bag to see what all was there. But the bags also contain a sheet of paper with information about where the homeless can find help and support. And that s the first thing Mike went for; he pulled it out of the bag and started studying it fervently...for him, that may have been the most important thing in that bag. I challenge all of you to do something, no matter how small, to have a positive impact on the life of a homeless person this week. James Deets Do you have questions about this ministry? 13 Why We Use Incense in our Liturgy Ancient practice to be used on Good Friday, April 14, 7:15 p.m. and Easter, April 16, at the 11 a.m. service At certain services during the liturgical year, Cathedral of Hope uses incense during worship. Some, whose church background did not include this practice, have asked why we do this. We believe that worship should be experiential. We are most fully engaged when the senses of sight, sound, smell, taste and touch are stirred. Incense is one way in which the Church throughout history has done that. Moreover, the use of incense is a thoroughly Biblical concept. We see it commanded of the Jews (Exodus 25:29) and then used in worship in Israel from that point on. Notice the prophecy of Malachi 1:11, From the rising of the sun to its setting my name is great among the nations, and in every place incense is offered to my name. God actually anticipates the use of incense by all people in God s name. In the New Testament, we see Zechariah offering incense in the sanctuary when the angel of the Lord appears to him (Luke 1:8-11). Later, in Revelation, we see the elders holding golden bowls of incense, which are the prayers of the saints (Revelation 5:8). Incense is the symbol of our prayers rising up to the Lord. It is also symbolic of spiritual cleansing and has been used in Christian worship since ancient times. So, as you smell the incense in our services, remember the history and symbolism behind it, and try to let it enhance your experience of worship! Amazing Grace CoH & DHC in Action! It s Sunday morning, 8:55 a.m. on March 26. Everyone is settled in the pews, ready for the 9:00 service to begin. Very few people know what s going on in the receptionist s office as they engage in an incredibly moving worship service. Very few people know that the otherworldly rendition of Amazing Grace, delivered by Jimmy Mitchell s bagpipes and the incredible Cathedral of Hope choir and orchestra is actually being lived out in real time in the receptionist s office. A very young man who was at the time living on the streets because his father won t have a gay son came in simply seeking a blanket and a tent. As he began to tell his story through welling eyes, a broken voice and a head held in despair, it became clear that he needed far more than that. He needed food and immediate medical care. Within that hour, he received two blankets donated by the lovely man staffing the desk that morning. He received medical care by the dedicated physician who invisibly slipped out of the choir loft to offer help. He received new clothes and a hot meal before the service was over. DALLAS H O PE CHARITIES The next day, he took advantage of the invitation to come to icare for a lovingly prepared meal and some groceries from the pantry that you help to pack every month. During his stay at icare (blankets in tow), he was interviewed by two highly qualified volunteers who understood his story. By the end of the day, he and his boyfriend had been driven to where they needed to go and were able to lay their exhausted minds and bodies down in a dry, warm, secure place for much-needed sleep as they began the first night of their new lives new lives that now have hope, all because of the culture of Caring, Connecting and Growing that is cultivated within the walls of this church. Most importantly, he received love the same love that we all need; the same love that we sometimes take for granted. I don t know about you, but I consider that story to be the living version of Amazing Grace. Rusty Gage, Director of Dallas Hope Charities Jesus is Risen! Contact Rusty at rgage@dallashopecharities.org with any questions. What the Youth are Learning Can someone lose their salvation? Perseverance of the saints is how theologians sometimes speak of this question of whether a person can lose their faith. There are really two schools of thought: some think that a person can, indeed, lose their faith; others think that if someone seems to lose their faith, they were never really a believer ta begin with. In the end, even Jesus makes it clear that only God knows who is saved and who isn t, and it s not worth our time to worry about something that we can know so little about. God is the one who saves, and, like the father in the parable of the prodigal son, God s love is always pining for us, aching for us, even if we ve turned away for a time. Your youth s grappling with salvation may center on heaven and hell. Instead, today s lesson will help us all consider the concept of salvation as an ongoing relationship, which may be new to most of us.
