2 Welcome to Cathedral of Hope! What began in 1970 as a circle of 12 friends meeting weekly for worship and fellowship has grown into Cathedral of Hope, a Vibrant, Inclusive, Progressive (VIP) congregation of the United Church of Christ. Founded in and serving beyond the LGBTQ community, our mission is to reclaim Christianity as a faith of extravagant grace, radical inclusion, and relentless compassion by being a people of hope proclaiming God s inclusive love, removing barriers to faith and empowering all to grow in grace toward wholeness. If you are visiting Cathedral of Hope for the first time, we are glad to have you here, are blessed by your presence, and hope you will return often! If there is anything we can do to make your visit more enjoyable, please call on our Ushers to assist you. You re invited to use the restroom that corresponds with your gender identity or the restroom that is the safest and most comfortable for you. Gendered, multiple-occupancy restrooms are located near the double glass doors behind the Sanctuary. All-gender, single-occupancy restrooms are available off the hall to the right of the Hall of Heroes area. For more information about the church, please come to the Ministry & Visitor s Center located next to Sources of Hope. Our worship services are recorded for broadcast worldwide. We make every effort to respect your privacy; however, to ensure that you are not seen on screen, please sit in one of the last five rows of pews in the center section. Large-print bulletins and assisted listening systems are available in the bookstore. Neil s NOTE Good Morning, Cathedral of Hope United Church of Christ! There are many things that I have come to know to be true about my experience and relationship with God. One of those things is that God calls us in our authenticity. God looks into our hearts and sees our intent, our potential, our beautifulness and invites us to join in the Great Commission of sharing God s love with the world. As I look at the lives that are revealed in our sacred text, I see an incredibly diverse people that God chooses to do justice, love mercy and to walk humbly with their God. I see women, men, young and old lives. I see people who all had something about them that, according to our worldly standards, might not seem acceptable, or perhaps made them unworthy to be chosen as a partner in God s universal plan. In fact, some of the greatest acts of God lived out in our human understanding are done by ordinary people like you and me, people with flaws and, let s face it, imperfect people! Our sermon series, If You re Not Perfect, You re Ready explores some of these characters in our Holy Bible and helps us to see just how imperfect people were chosen to do great things. This Sunday we examine the life of Moses. Moses was a prophet in the Abrahamic religions. According to the Hebrew Bible, he was adopted by an Egyptian princess, and later in life became the leader of the Israelites. He is the most important prophet in Judaism. He is also an important prophet in Christianity, Islam, the Bahá í Faith, and a number of other Abrahamic religions. However, Moses was not perfect. He was a stammering murderer, and many details of his life are well documented. Nevertheless, God chose Moses and proved once again that we do not need to be perfect to be a part of God s plan, nor to know the love that God has for each of us. This is a beautiful understanding of God: that we know and get to co-create, with God, despite our imperfections, the more just, inclusive, and love-filled world that God has intended since before the beginning of time. Today, let us welcome the Christ in us that will always seek out and welcome the Christ in each other, in our imperfect us s, so that we might know that, If you re not perfect, you re ready! Sincerely, in Christ The Reverend Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas Senior Pastor STAFF * Rev. Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas Senior Pastor seniorpastor@cathedralofhope.com Rev. Phillip Keveren John Arney, flute; Rashaad Calaham, oboe; Fritz Oviedo, clarinet Billy Holderby, horn; Johnny Engelke, bass clarinet; Les Holben, piano CALL TO WORSHIP **PROCESSIONAL HYMN Called as Partners in Christ s Service Rev. Dr. Michael Diaz Worship Note on p. 3 WORSHIP NOTES Insight into the various musical elements of our services Step by Step Step by Step, also known as Sometimes by Step, is a song by Christian recording artist Rich Mullins. It has become one of his most loved songs over the years, sung in countless worship services throughout the world. It is a song about assurance, hope, grace, guidance, and worshiping God. This song symbolizes our wanderings through our spiritual journey where we strive to seek you (God) in the morning, and learn to walk in your ways, and step by step you ll lead me, and I will follow you all of my days. The Prelude today is an arrangement by Phillip Keverin which was scored for woodwind quintet and piano. After a lyrical statement of the theme, the setting transitions into an upbeat version of the tune with a driving syncopation in the bass. 4 GATHERING OF THE COMMUNITY **EXCHANGE OF PEACE Rev. Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas Rev. Dr. Michael Diaz LITURGY OF THE WORD HEBREW LESSON Exodus 4: The Message Rev. Andria Davis Moses raised another objection to GOD: Holy One, please, I don t talk well. I ve never been good with words, neither before nor after you spoke to me. I stutter and stammer. GOD said, And who do you think made the human mouth? And who makes some mute, some deaf, some sighted, some blind? Isn t it I, GOD? So, get going. I ll be right there with you with your mouth! I ll be right there to teach you what to say. Moses said, Oh, please! Send somebody else! GOD got angry with Moses: Don t you have a brother, Aaron the Levite? Aaron s good with words, I know he is. He speaks very well. In fact, at this very moment Aaron s on his way to meet you. When he sees you he s going to be glad. You ll speak to Aaron and tell him what to say. I ll be right there with you as you speak and with him as he speaks, teaching you step by step. Aaron will speak to the people for you. He ll act as your mouth, but you ll decide what comes out of it. ANTHEM NEW MEMBER CONFIRMATION GRADUAL Use Me Words and Music by Dewitt Jones and Kim Jones; arr. Carol Cymbala Denise Lee, soloist Sanctuary Choir and Orchestra When You Speak to Me Choir: When you speak to me, when I take the time to listen, there is peace to cover any pain. 5 **GOSPEL LESSON John 3: One: Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. All: Come, Holy Spirit. One: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John. All: Glory to you, O God. Jesus continued, And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Chosen One be lifted up, that whoever believes may have eternal life. For God so loved the world as to give the Only Begotten One, that whoever believes may not perish but have eternal life. Indeed, God did not send the Chosen One into the world to condemn the world, but that through this One the world might be saved. One: All: This is the Gospel of Hope. Praise to you, Creator, Christ and Holy Spirit. **GLORIA Music by Richard Hillert Concordia Publishing House arr. Steven Couch; OneLicense.net License #A SERMON If You re Not Perfect, You re Ready Rev. Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas Moses Called as Partners in Christ s Service Jane Parker Huber (b. 1926) wrote the words for our Processional Hymn in 1981 for the women s breakfast held when two Presbyterian denominations convened joint General Assemblies in Houston. The partnership she originally referred to was that of women and men in ministry, but the hymn s meaning has expanded. Jane Parker Huber inherited her love for service through the Presbyterian Church from both her father and mother. Her father was president of Hanover College in Indiana, and her mother served on two national Presbyterian bodies. The hymn tune BEECHER was written by John Zundel ( ) in The tune s name is for Henry Ward Beecher, pastor of Plymouth Church in Brooklyn, New York, where Zundel served as organist for thirty years. Zundel was born and educated in Hochdorf, Germany, but immigrated to the United States. He served different churches in New York and in 1850 began a thirty-year ministry of music at Plymouth Church. 3

DISTRIBUTION OF THE ELEMENTS Words and Music by Connie Harrington and Anna Hutto BMG Songs, Inc; adapted and arr. by David Moldenhauer CCLI License # TO OUR GUESTS Cathedral of Hope celebrates an open communion. We understand the sharing of the bread and the cup in Jesus name to be a representation of an ancient vision of God s feast for all peoples. We don t require you to be a member of this church, or any church, to participate with us in this feast of grace. Simply come forward at the ushers direction. After dipping a wafer in the cup, which contains non-alcoholic grape juice, the minister will place it on your tongue and offer a brief blessing. If you prefer to serve yourself, cup your hands in front of you as you come to receive communion. Gluten-free Wafers are available from the silver intinction set at the center point. Please indicate your need to the ushers on the center aisle and they will direct you to the appropriate position. We ask that you serve yourself take a wafer and dip it in the juice in order to avoid cross-contamination by the server. During the serving of Holy Communion, feel free to join in our Music during Communion. Please also be mindful of those around you who are in prayer and meditation. 4

7 MUSIC DURING COMMUNION TO OUR GUESTS It has become a tradition at the Cathedral of Hope to rise as we end our time of communion (as indicated by **), join hands as an expression of our unity in Christ, and lift them up in glory to God. Music OneLicense.net License # A **BENEDICTION POSTLUDE Flowers are given to the glory of God by a grateful member of the church in celebration of Cathedral of Hope s Congregational Care Team, which supports our members with hospital visits, prayer support, and caring presence in times of grief. Time of Prayer After the service, caring ministers will be in the chapel area to offer you personal prayer for healing and comfort. Time of Fellowship Please join us for refreshments after the service in the Fellowship Hall. Change Lyrics to Today s Offertory I tried so many times but nothing happened, it seemed the task at hand was much too great for me. I spent my yesterdays wondering if tomorrow would be the same. I underestimated your grace. But you loved me in spite of my ways and changed me. Change. That s the word that comes to mind when I think of all you ve done for me. Oh, oh, change. It s kinda strange how people say that I act so differently Oh, oh change. Every passing day I find it easier to say... What a wonderful change in me. Now I find myself staring in the mirror taking inventory of the things I see. I never realized that there was so much missing deep inside until you took control of my life. Like an eagle now I can fly cause you changed me. 6

10 Today in Children s Church Last week, we talked about Jesus as a 12 year old boy in the Temple, speaking articulate words with great authority to the astonished rabbis who were gathered on the steps for their religious debates. This week, we will remember the story of the beginning of Moses ministry. We ll see that Moses was far from articulate and embarrassed by his stuttering, but God still found a way to utilize what was best in him. We will talk about being the best were created to be! Contact Dan Peeler at dpeeler@cathedralofhope.com if you have any questions about the Children and Families Ministry. CONNECT CARE GROW Volunteer of the Month On Wednesday, August 1, we had our first ever drawing for a reserved parking spot for the Volunteer of the Month. At Cathedral of Hope, we think our volunteers are kind of a big deal, and because of that, we decided that honoring our volunteers once a year wasn t enough. So, the Volunteer of the Month reserved parking spot drawing was born. The drawing was captured on Facebook Live as we pulled the name of the first winner: Name: Judy Craig Ministries: Sanctuary Choir, Evensong, Tutor Volunteering Since: 1992 Judy has also written, illustrated and published a coloring book, A Butterfly and A Turtle: A Story for All Ages. Congratulations, Judy! Who will be next? Maybe you! Active volunteers (active is defined as we have a record of your current volunteer hours in the database) can enter the drawing by completing an entry form that is available at the drop box located on the wall to the right of the inside glass doors. Only one entry per person per month please however, you may enter every month that you are an active volunteer. Monthly drawings will be on the first business day of each month. The winner will be notified after each drawing. Contact Anita at ahaddy@cathedralofhope.com with any questions you may have Dallas Pride Saturday, September 15, Sunday, September 16, 2018 For 2018 Cathedral of Hope made the decision to become a sponsor of the Miller Lite Musical Festival, Family Pride Zone, and the Alan Ross Texas Freedom Parade. Our Church is Kind of a Big Deal. Miller Lite Music Festival Reverchon Park Saturday, September 15 (11 a.m. 7 p.m.) This year Cathedral of Hope will have presence during the music festival with booths in both the general music festival area as well as within the Family Pride Zone. Our goal is to make the community more aware of who Cathedral of Hope is and the many ways we are working within the community to reclaim Christianity as a faith of extravagant grace, radical inclusion and relentless compassion. We are looking for a few volunteers to help at our booth location within the main festival area. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact cbohaker@cathedralofhope.com or by printing MUSIC FESTIVAL in the comment section of the attendance pads. Alan Ross Texas Freedom Parade Sunday, September 16 CoH is in full swing preparing for this years Dallas Pride Parade. This year s parade is extra exciting with Cathedral of Hope being a sponsor; but also, because our very own Rev. Dr. Neil G.Cazares-Thomas will be one of the parade Grand Marshals. This year s parade theme Vote No H8 In The Lone Star ST8 is dedicated to bringing awareness to the ideology that love, equality, inclusion, compassion, liberation and hope are rights for ALL, not just SOME. This belief is something that Cathedral of Hope was founded on and has spent time confirming during our recent anniversary season. Cathedral of Hope will participate in the parade as a walking entry, which means that we will not be providing any transportation options for the parade. We are looking for between individuals who are willing to participate in the parade specifically to carry flags and banners. If you are interested, please contact cbohaker@cathedralofhope.com or print PRIDE PARADE in the comment section of the attendance pads. Watch for more information over the next couple of weeks on how/where to register and cost to register as a participant in our parade entry. Cathedral of Hope will be providing a give-away to be thrown or handed to individuals in the crowd. We would ask that individuals participating DO NOT purchase their own items to throw or handout to the crowd. Only CoH approved give-away items will be allowed. 8

Stretch Out Your Hand: Healing Prayer Group According to Tilda Norberg and Robert Webber, Christian healing is a process that involves the totality of our being body, mind, emotion, spirit, and our social context and that directs us toward becoming the person God is calling us to be at every stage of our living and our dying (Stretch Out Your Hand: Exploring Healing Prayer). Today, for a number of reasons, our spirits are scattered and exhausted, in need of rest and healing. We are often like the blind Bartimaeus crying out, Jesus, Son of David, have mercy upon me! We need mindful attention to wholeness and, as the body of Christ, are called to pray for one another. The group Stretch Out Your Hand begins with reading, response journaling, guided meditation, and dialogue about Norberg and Webber s book. At the end of each meeting, we will pray together for each other, and other members of the congregation, and share prayers for the world as well. At the end of the 4 weeks, we will become a once a month prayer group deepening our own prayer lives and opening to the Spirit s power in us as we pray for others. Please join us as we withdraw together to heal ourselves, others, and the world. The group meets Tuesday nights in September: 4, 11, 18, 25 from 6:30-8 and then will decide together which night is best for the ongoing monthly meeting. Contact the facilitator Dr. Pat Saxon at spiritsister26@aol.com with any questions. 9 Trans Clothing Swap Oak Lawn UMC will be hosting a clothing swap as part of its dedication to its clothing ministry and outreach to the transgender community. They will provide a safe, accepting space for trans community members to find clothes that help them be their authentic selves. Participants are invited to (though not required) to bring their old clothes as well as to take home some for themselves! Masculine clothing and binders needed. Refreshments will also be provided. To donate clothing, take to OLUMC, 3014 Oak Lawn Ave, second floor, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday, or by appointment oaklawn@olumc.org or See related volunteer opportunity on page 10. CoH Small/Circle Group Leadership Training One two-hour training. Two options: 1 3 p.m. OR 3 5 p.m. Sunday, August 19, CLC East Wing Room 195 This meeting is for those currently leading Circle of Hope groups, those who have led seasonal small groups, and those who want to lead CoH small groups in the future. We want to make sure you are inspired and equipped to do the critical work of community building at our large church. It is critical that we create safe and spiritual space for community and growth. We will kick off this fall. As we begin to revitalize this ministry, we will provide mandatory trainings to help deal with group dynamics, self-care in leadership, and give you updates on worship series & curriculum availability. Please register through the link below. Questions? Contact Rev. Erin ewyma@cathedralofhope.com leadership-and-affinity-groups/coh-small-circle-group-leaders Heat Advisory Heat exhaustion can sneak up on you, causing increased body temperature, rapid pulse, headache and fatigue. If you don t get cool, you will dehydrate, possibly suffer a stroke, or worse, die. Of 8,000-plus heat-related fatalities reported annually in the United States, 36 percent are among those ages 65 and older, according to a Centers for Disease Control Heat-Related Illness Survey. Hospitalizations for heat-related symptoms increase for those over 85. Cathedral of Hope wants to encourage those with elderly friends, relatives or neighbors to take five minutes to check in on them, particularly in very hot weather. Studies show there are far too few professional caregivers for aging adults, a trend expected to continue for the next 10 years or more, so non-professionals play a vital role in keeping seniors safe. Find information and inspiration for both professional and family caregivers at CaregiverResource.com. Giving just a few minutes of your time to ensure a senior s well-being can be highly rewarding. You might even save a life.

This year the event will be held on Saturday, October 27th from 4pm 7pm here in the church parking lot. Want to get involved? We need individuals willing to decorate their trunks and hand out candy as well as volunteers to help with the various activities during the event. Watch for more information on how you can register your trunk or be a volunteer for this AMAZING COMMUNITY EVENT. Are you a business owner or do you work for a company that might be interested in being a sponsor of this event? Sponsorship opportunities begin at $250.
