CoH SUNDAY Worship Untangled: The Way, The Truth, The Life Good Morning, Cathedral of Hope United Church of Christ! was raised in the Church of Jesus I Christ of Latter Day Saints, the Mormon tradition, with a belief that the only way to get into heaven was to be a Mormon. In fact, Mormons believe in several levels of heaven, or rather three heavens: celestial, terrestrial and telestial. Only those who are Mormon can enter into the celestial heaven. This notion is not unique to Mormons. There are many Christian denominations and sects which believe that only they will be in heaven and that everyone else is someone condemned to an outer darkness or hell. The belief that the only way to live faithfully is through a belief in Jesus Christ is centered on this statement from Jesus: I am the way, the truth and the life, no one can get to God except through me. (John 14:6) However, the context of this proclamation by Jesus needs to be understood before casting all who do not find their path to God through Jesus to some kind of eternal hell and darkness. Jesus is comforting his disciples as he tells them of his upcoming death, letting them know that where he is going, they will go also. The way to heaven is by following in the footsteps of Christ, growing in likeness to Christ, living it, and modeling it for others. It is through this living and believing the way, the truth and life that we will know God and find our way, like those early disciples, to the place where Jesus is. How can anyone know the way unless someone demonstrates and shows them the way? It was the question the disciples asked of Jesus, and it is the question that we must ask ourselves as we live our lives in the way, the truth and the life. Jesus told them that if you really know me, you will know God as well. This is not just true of Jesus; this is true of all who try to live faithfully in the path, the way of all that God entrusts to us. The church is often a poor reflection of the way, the truth and the life. People who believe in God are often a poor reflection as well! Jesus invites us, individually, to find the way not to put our trust in any organized (or disorganized!) religion or institution. We are called to live faithfully, whether we are Christian or not, whether we are Jew or Greek, slave or free as Paul would later say. What is true is that we must find our path, our way, living by the values and commandments that are true, not just for Christians, but for all who desire to live in the way of goodness, faithfulness and light. We at Cathedral of Hope strive to follow in the way and tradition of Jesus, the one who has shown us the way, the truth and the life. Our responsibility is to live in that way and to allow God to welcome us home, not because we have followed a set of doctrines, but because of the way we have lived, faithful to what is revealed in Jesus and in us. Sincerely, in Christ The Reverend Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas Senior Pastor HOPEQuotes Thank you, Pastor Neil, for a 2018 reminder of that which we know, but seem to need to be reminded of, that we are beloved creations of God created for life, love, grace and joy. DIADEMATA Praise to the Living God Curtis Beach ( ) wrote these words in 1966 while attending a conference concerning the death of God controversy. He heard the opening words, Praise to the living God, in his head, accompanied by this tune, and wrote the words that evening finishing at four in the morning. Beach, born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, was a minister of the Congregational Christian Church and later the United Church of Christ after the denomination was formed in He served churches in Massachusetts, California, Pennsylvania, and Maine. George Job Elvey ( ) composed the hymntune DIADEMATA in 1868 for the Matthew Bridges hymn Crown Him with Many Crowns. It has long been a favorite of hymnwriters and editors, appearing three times in The New Century Hymnal. Diademata is the Greek word for crowns. Christ Goes Before Our Canticle this morning was commissioned by Ascension Lutheran Church, Riverside Illinois, for their 50th anniversary. The words, by Jaroslav Vajda ( ), explore the images of the Way, the Truth, the Life, set forth in today s Gospel. 4 **INVOCATION GATHERING OF THE COMMUNITY **EXCHANGE OF PEACE Rev. Andria Davis Rev. Erin Wyma LITURGY OF THE WORD MODERN LESSON adapted from Immortal Diamond: The Search for Our True Self by Richard Rohr Johann Huebschmann Why did Jesus come? Jesus did not come to change the mind of God about humanity. It didn t need changing. God has organically, inherently loved what God created from the moment God created it. Jesus came to change the mind of humanity about God. As our image of God changes, our image of God s creation, including ourselves, changes as well. Jesus shows us what it looks like for God to be incarnate in humanity. He holds together the human and the divine so that we might follow him and do the same. Jesus shows us that the pattern of everything is death and resurrection. Jesus is the archetypal pattern for every life, including yours and mine. There will be suffering and death along with love, joy, and resurrection. Most of us are so resistant to accepting suffering that Jesus walked through it himself and said, Follow me. He showed us that on the other side of suffering is transformation. Love is stronger than death. The full, vibrant life that Jesus offers is big enough to include even its opposite: death. Unless a religion directly faces the issues of suffering and death, it is a rather useless religion. Jesus holds these big questions front and center. Glory to you, O God. Jesus said, Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. In God s house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also. And you know the way to the place where I am going. Thomas replied, Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way? Jesus said, I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to Abba God except through me. If you know me, you will know my Heavenly Parent also. From now on, you know God and have seen God. One: All: This is the Gospel of Hope. Praise to you, Creator, Christ, and Holy Spirit. 7 DISTRIBUTION OF THE ELEMENTS TO OUR GUESTS Cathedral of Hope celebrates an open communion. We don t require you to be a member of this church, or any church, to participate with us in this feast of grace. Simply come forward at the ushers direction. After dipping a wafer in the cup, which contains non-alcoholic grape juice, the minister will place it on your tongue and offer a brief blessing. If you prefer to serve yourself, cup your hands in front of you as you come to receive communion. Gluten-free Wafers are available from the silver intinction set at the center point. Please indicate your need to the ushers on the center aisle and they will direct you to the appropriate position. We ask that you serve yourself take a wafer and dip it in the juice in order to avoid cross-contamination by the server. 10 Today in Children s Church On Sunday, we ask the question, Is Jesus the Way, the Truth, and the Life? as we examine that famous Scripture verse and think about the first people who might have heard it. He was talking to people who lived under the rule of the Romans who were saying that the Way of Caesar was the only way to God since, in their definition, the Emperor WAS God. Jesus was telling them that the Way to know God was to first know the Truth about God s Love, which would result in a Life well-lived. Only by knowing Jesus truth can we understand what God has in store for us. Contact Dan Peeler at dpeeler@cathedralofhope.com if you have any questions about the Children and Families Ministry. Jesus reveals the Truth Dan Peeler, Minister for Children & Families, and Charlie Rose create beautiful illustrations for use in the Children s Church PowerPoint lessons. Grace-filled Endings: Practical Free Workshops about End-of-Life Planning Making decisions about end-of-life issues can be complicated and even a little frightening. This workshop series will give you practical information about three important topics we all deal with as we get older. The next workshop will provide advice about estate planning and making charitable planned gifts, because we all have assets when we are alive and we all need to plan for distribution of those assets when our lives end. How we choose to share what God has given us during our lifetimes after we are gone reflects our values, and planning our estate distributions should be thoughtful and deliberate. The final workshop is an opportunity for you to think through your own funeral or memorial arrangements which can be a thoughtful gift for your family and heirs. Workshop 2 Saturday, February 10, 10 am 12 noon Estate Planning 101 Workshop Presenters: Rebecca Covell, Estate Planning Attorney; Robert Shimmin, Insurance Professional Workshop 3 Saturday, February 17, 10 am 12 noon Making Funeral & Memorial Service Arrangements. For more info, contact: Patricia Patsy Bjorling, Director of Development, pbjorling@cathedralofhope.com or Ash Wednesday is February 14 Why we use ashes as part of our liturgy Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, is observed on the Wednesday of the seventh week before Easter. The day is named for the practice of imposing ashes, an ancient practice and sign of repentance that is mentioned several times in the Bible, including Jonah 3: 5-9, Job 42: 6, Jeremiah 6: 26 and Matthew 11: 21. Early Christians adopted the use of ashes from Jewish practice as an external mark of penitence. Many modern congregations find this to be a meaningful part of the Ash Wednesday liturgy. Ashes symbolize several aspects of our human existence: Ashes remind us of God s condemnation of sin, as God said to Adam, Dust you are and to dust you shall return. (Genesis 3:19) Ashes suggest cleansing and renewal. In ancient times, they were used in the absence of soap. On Ash Wednesday, ashes are a penitential substitute for water as a reminder of our baptism. Ashes remind us of the shortness of human life, for, as it is said as we are buried, Earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust. Ashes are a symbol of our need to repent, confess our sins and return to God. The imposition of ashes You will have multiple opportunities to receive ashes this Ash Wednesday. The Interfaith Peace Chapel will be open from 11:45 a.m. - 1 p.m. for personal meditation with English and Spanish speaking clergy available for the imposition of ashes. Ashes will also be a part of Ashes on the Strip (Cedar Springs & Throckmorton) 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. and at the bilingual service at 7:15 p.m. in the church Sanctuary. Ashes, are applied in the shape of a small cross with the minister s thumb to the forehead of each person with the words, Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return. You are also invited to walk the labyrinth in the IPC Sanctuary throughout the day. Lenten Book Study 2018: Focusing on the Call to be a Disciple of Jesus Our Lenten sermon series theme for this year is, What If and we ll be exploring what kind of world it might be if the world that Jesus looked for was a reality. 11 Why We Use Incense in our Liturgy Ancient practice to be used on Ash Wednesday, February 14, at 7:15 p.m. At certain services during the liturgical year, Cathedral of Hope uses incense during worship. Some, whose church background did not include this practice, have asked why we do this. We believe that worship should be experiential. We are most fully engaged when the senses of sight, sound, smell, taste and touch are stirred. Incense is one way in which the Church throughout history has done that. Moreover, the use of incense is a thoroughly Biblical concept. We see it commanded of the Jews (Exodus 25:29) and then used in worship in Israel from that point on. Notice the prophecy of Malachi 1:11, From the rising of the sun to its setting my name is great among the nations, and in every place incense is offered to my name. God actually anticipates the use of incense by all people in God s name. In the New Testament, we see Zechariah offering incense in the sanctuary when the angel of the Lord appears to him (Luke 1:8-11). Later, in Revelation, we see the elders holding golden bowls of incense, which are the prayers of the saints (Revelation 5:8). Incense is the symbol of our prayers rising up to the Lord. It is also symbolic of spiritual cleansing and has been used in Christian worship since ancient times. So, as you smell the incense in our services, remember the history and symbolism behind it, and try to let it enhance your experience of worship! Their main attraction is that the heating of the salt causes the crystal to release negative ions. Negative ions are considered healthy; sea air, mountain air and the air around swiftly running water are high in negative ions. They bind with airborne pollutants, making them heavier so that they fall to the ground, and are unavailable to be inhaled. A salt lamp is an attractive alternative to the utilitarian look of an air purifier. They are also attractive as accent lights for bathrooms and bedside tables. We have two additional styles that are powered by a USB plug --great attachment for your laptop or as a small bag of salt rocks to hang wherever you want a small light. ($15 - $25) Aluminum Notepad w/led Pen With an eye on style and sophistication, each aluminum case is polished, and a subtle pattern is added on the front. The case is locked together with a full-sized pen that features an optional bright LED light at the tip. Each note pad contains 100 lined pages. Refills available. The Walk March 8 11 Registration Continues The Walk is a 3-day spiritual retreat designed to strengthen each participant s personal faith journey. The Walk is a spiritual renewal program intended to strengthen the local church through the development of Christian disciples and leaders. The Walk experience is a 72-hour short course in grace, comprised of talks and activities led by a team of lay persons and pastors. The Walk retreat participants have opportunities to engage in both personal and communal spiritual growth as the weekend unfolds. This wonderful weekend is a Christ-centered retreat with experiences of prayer, meditation, worship, communion and always a lot of fun. The Walk Community is made up of individuals who have attended a 3-day retreat weekend, and who support the experience through prayer and other acts of love, generosity and grace. Who should attend The Walk? The Walk is a ministry of Cathedral of Hope United Church of Christ in Dallas, Texas, yet anyone who desires to grow in their faith and be active in their church/faith community is invited to attend the weekend. The Walk weekend begins on Thursday afternoon and concludes in the afternoon on Sunday and the retreat is open to all genders. The Walk is usually limited to 32 attendees. A completed application and down payment are necessary to reserve a space for the weekend. What does it cost to go on The Walk? $ The registration fee includes the cost of your room for the retreat, your daily meals, snacks, project supplies, and much, much more. A $50.00 deposit is required to register for the Walk and the balance is due by February 16, How do I register for the Walk? Register for the Walk by filling out and returning The Walk Application which is available at The Walk table in the Fellowship Hall before and after worship services on Sundays and in the Narthex before and after worship services on Wednesdays through February 18, and by submitting your deposit of $50.00, which can be returned to Cathedral of Hope by mail or brought to The Walk table on Sundays. Please contact Zanté Garcia, Program Director or David White at thewalk@cathedralofhope.com for further information or if you have questions about the retreat. Greening Tip Increase the shelf life of refrigerated foods. In the case of cheese instead of wrapping in plastic, use cheese paper or wax paper. Mushrooms should be stored in a paper bag, not plastic.

Watch online at: Liberty and Restraint Art Exhibit in the Interfaith Peace Chapel Dallas Contemporary presents new works by artist Enoc Perez, inspired by and exhibited at Philip Johnson structures in Dallas and Fort Worth. A portion of Liberty & Restraint Art Exhibit will be presented in the Interfaith Peace Chapel now until June. Perez s focus on Philip Johnson in Dallas and Fort Worth will place paintings and sculptures of Johnson s work in and near his structures. Simultaneously, large-scale paintings and sculptures will be exhibited in Dallas Contemporary as a base for the project, highlighting and addressing the significance of the eight Johnson locations in North Texas. From the 1960s to the late 1980s, Philip Johnson was instrumental in changing the urban matrix of Dallas and Fort Worth with his buildings, each exemplary of his unique architectural vision. This metroplex-wide exhibition highlights the work of a seminal architect by pairing Enoc Perez s paintings and sculptures with Philip Johnson s architecture. Perez, whose artist practice involves examining architecture, aims to create a larger dialogue about architectural structures and their locations. Enoc Perez has been interested in Philip Johnson s career for many years. In 2015 he completed an ambitious series of paintings of New York s Lipstick Building which were shown at Johnson s Glass House in Connecticut. The exhibition presented six renditions of the iconic elliptical office tower in Manhattan designed by architects Philip Johnson and John Burgee. For each work, Perez used his characteristic style to explore the formal qualities of the Lipstick Building in a variety of palettes. Through the city-wide exhibition Enoc Perez: Liberty and Restraint, Dallas Contemporary intends to expand upon Perez s exhibition at the Glass House by addressing the eight Johnson designed buildings throughout Dallas and Fort Worth Amon Carter Museum of American Art (Fort Worth; 1961), The Beck House (Dallas; 1964), John F. Kennedy Memorial (Dallas; 1970), Fort Worth Water Gardens (1974), Thanks-Giving Square (Dallas; 1976), The Crescent (Dallas; 1985), Comerica Tower (Dallas; 1987) and the CoH IPC (Dallas; 2010).
