PLEASE, Silence Your Cell Phone! Thank you. CoH SUNDAY Worship One God, or Three? Good Morning, Cathedral of Hope United Church of Christ! Last Sunday, we celebrated Pentecost. That day is also known as the birthday of the Church, universal, the day when the disciples were gathered in the upper room and the Holy Spirit entered therein, sending them out into the world to proclaim the good news of God s love for all people. It is known as the birthday of the church universal because it was on that day that the way of Jesus was distinctly separated from the Jewish faith. The followers of Jesus, our spiritual ancestors, came to believe that there was a new revelation of God s redeeming grace and love. It was expressed in Jesus, proven in the risen Christ, and offered to us in the power of the Holy Spirit who compelled those early disciples and compels us today. Three distinct expressions of God. Today is Trinity Sunday, and it is the day that the church speaks of the fulfilment of the revelation, the completion of the Godhead that was spoken of at the beginning of time when God breathed life into the world. It is this revelation that we read of in John s Gospel when the writer opens the book by saying that In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God. The writer goes on to draw a direct line between God and Jesus and ultimately between God, Jesus and the Spirit, who were all there at the beginning. I know, this can be very confusing. In fact, theologians have tried for many years to give a fuller understanding to the Trinity; to try and understand this difficult doctrine. The question remains, is it one God, or three? Our hope today is to come to a better understanding of how God has been revealed through both the Hebrew and Christian scriptures, and to embrace these distinct, yet integrated, manifestations through which the early followers came to know God. Still confused?! I hope that today you might have your own experience of God, one in three and three in one. Be blessed, siblings in Christ, as we worship, and I hope you find the distinct and integrated Godhead Creator, Christ, and Holy Spirit moving freely among us, meeting us at our points of need. Sincerely, in Christ The Reverend Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas Senior Pastor HOPEQuotes Thank you, Pastor Neil, for your hope-filled message! I became aware of Cathedral of Hope as I was coming out in late Internet streaming of services has been a continued blessing throughout most of those twenty plus years. Additional graphics created by Chris Chism, Dan Peeler and Charlie Rose. 1 Sanctus Sometimes the most profound musical statements flow out of simplicity. Rooted in song, the music of Franz Schubert ( ) often seems to say a lot with a few, seemingly effortless notes. The Sanctus from Schubert s German Mass is a good example. In the traditional Latin liturgical text, Sanctus sounds like a stirring proclamation, Holy, holy, holy, God of power and might. These lines have inspired composers from Mozart and Verdi to John Rutter to write soaring, complex music. By contrast, Schubert s Sanctus is a simple, introspective chorale. The strings of the Cathedral of Hope Orchestra open our services this morning with an arrangement of this piece. Holy, Holy, Holy Reginald Heber ( ) wrote this hymn of pure adoration to God, based on Revelation 4: 8-11, for use on Trinity Sunday. This tribute to the triune God was first published in the year Heber died, 1826, and has become the most widely sung of all his hymns. Heber was a bishop of the Anglican Church, and did much to introduce congregational singing in the Church of England, which was previously contemptuous of that Continued on p. 2

4 **INVOCATION OF THE TRINITY LITURGY OF THE WORD HEBREW LESSON Genesis 1: 1-4, 26-31; 2: 1-4 Rev. Erin Wyma In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep; and the Spirit of God was moving over the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light ; and there was light. And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. Then God said, Let us make humankind in our image, after our likeness; and let them be stewards of the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, the cattle, the wild animals, and everything that crawls on the ground. Humankind was created as God s reflection: in the divine image God created them; female and male, God made them. And God blessed them, and said, Be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth and be responsible for it! Watch over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and all the living things on the earth! God then told them, Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food. And to all the animals of the earth, and to every bird of the air, and to everything that crawls on the ground everything that has the breath of life I have given every green plant for food. And it was so. God looked at all of this creation, and proclaimed that it was good very good. Evening came, and morning followed the sixth day. Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. On the seventh day God finished all the work of creation, and so, on the seventh day, God rested. God blessed the seventh day and called it sacred, because on it God rested from all the work of creation. These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created. ANTHEM PASTORAL PRAYER Psalm 8 (Adonai, Adonenu) Music by Dan Forrest Sanctuary Choir Katrina Kratzer, violin; Ellen Gay, percussion Adonai, Adonenu. O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and stars, that you have set in place, What are mortals that you care for them, O Lord? O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! Adonai, Adonenu. Psalm 8: 1, 3-4 Worship Note Below Continued from p. 1 practice. John Bacchus Dykes ( ) composed the hymntune NICAEA in 1861 and named it for the site of the 325 C.E. Christian church council which developed the Nicene Creed and examined and upheld the doctrine of the Trinity. Psalm 8 Our Anthem this morning is a beautiful setting of Psalm 8 by contemporary composer Dan Forrest. Emerging from silence, the ethereal opening moves into flowing phrases. The violin obbligato and use of the djembe (a skin-covered goblet drum played with bare hands, originally from West Africa) add a world music flavor. The Hebrew words Adonai, Adonenu the first words of the Psalm, O Lord, our Lord, are chanted under the English lyrics throughout the piece. 2

And Jesus came and said to them, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Creator and of the Christ and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age. One: All: This is the Gospel of Hope. Praise to you, Creator, Christ and Holy Spirit. 10 Today in Children s Church In the first Book of the Bible, Genesis, the ancient writers tell us how they imagined the world and the whole Universe were created. Their Earth was flat. We will discuss the shape of the Earth as we know it today. In this Creation poem, God creates all the animals on the ground, the fish of the seas, and the birds of the air. God calls all of them good. In order to maintain the good Creation, responsibilities were given by God to the woman and man. We ll talk about what all of us can still do today to help take care of the earth and everything on it. Please include your contact information. The Joy of Serving A Personal Story Don Pritchard I first became involved with icare about four years ago through my dear friend Rick Dishman. Rick was a tireless volunteer for CoH - ushering every Sunday whenever needed, plus his dedication to BACH and icare was amazing. I watched him give tirelessly of himself (until his death) and he was an inspiration to me. At one time Rick not only served for icare, but donated and paid for the food. We did this on Monday and Thursday and there were just 3 to 4 of us in the kitchen at that time. Through him I saw and got to know the icare clients. They give me so much...hope, strength and the will to survive, as do my fellow volunteers. I do what I do because of karma. Who knows...one day I might be in that line, and I can only hope there would be someone who would offer me a plate of food and a smile. There are days I leave icare bone weary but with a feeling of satisfaction that I gave something to someone who needed it and, perhaps, needed me. It s a feeling that God is smiling down on me. I hope to continue my volunteer work as long as my physical body holds out...it s the best medicine. For information, to check day and space availability or pricing information, please contact the Event Coordinator, Scott Stout, at sstout@cathedralofhope.com or x Generosity as Science? When someone mentions being generous or talks about generosity, most of us probably have an idea of what it means. It s attitudes and actions that go above and beyond what s expected or required. But apparently, it s more. There s actual science involved. A project being supervised by Notre Dame University is studying generosity across a variety of interdisciplinary platforms religious, political, corporate, civic, relational, etc. While the WHY of giving has been studied for years, this initiative also looks at the personal results or benefits. One of the most telling findings is that generous people are happier. For example, thirty-eight percent of people who tithe reported being very happy, which compared to only twenty-eight percent of the ones who didn t tithe. Those who volunteered just six hours a month were found to be significantly happier than those who didn t volunteer. It seems that giving generous giving of time, abilities and finances provides us a greater sense of purpose. In fact, the research suggests that generosity causes neuro-chemical changes in the pleasure center of the brain. People feel a sense of reward because they did something good. According to sociologist and author Christian Smith, who co-authored the book The Paradox of Generosity based on the Notre Dame Science of Generosity Initiative, [Generosity] has to be a practice, it has to be something that is sustained over time, that people engage with regularly. One-off things just don t affect us that much, whereas things that we repeat, things that are sustained in our bodily behaviors and in our minds, have tremendous effects on us. The empirical evidence was very clear. As people of faith, we know that giving is part of our journey, part of our calling and part of our responsibility. God lives in us, and we are an expression of the generosity of divine nature when we give. God loved the world, and gave Ask, and it will be given to you Jesus gave himself for us Each of us have abilities that can be utilized. We all have time we can invest. We ve been entrusted with resources that we can share with others. Scriptures tell us Give, and it shall be given to you. (Luke 6: 38) Now it seems there s science that reinforces that truth. When we give, and give generously, not only are the lives of others impacted, we become happier people. What the Youth are Learning this Week: Why do Christians believe Christianity is the best religion? Other religions have many beliefs about God. They have their own practices of prayer and worship. They have their own sacred texts. But no other major religion claims that God came to Earth, became human, experienced the joys and trials of human life, and ultimately entered into the greatest suffering of humanity: death. Christianity s claim to uniqueness is Jesus Christ: his life, his death, and his resurrection. Conversation starters to talk with your youth about this topic: What are some unique characteristics of other religions? What makes others say their religion is the best? Go and find out about that. Do you think Christianity is the best religion? Why or why not? How do beliefs impact or influence people s actions? What does it mean to say that a religion is superior to any other? What impact does saying that have on those around you? Your community? The wider community? Greening Tip When watering your outdoor plants, remember, a standard gardening hose and nozzle waste water because of mist, runoff, and evaporation. Use a soaker hose or sprinkler wand.
