2 WELCOME to Worship! Cathedral of Hope is a vibrant, inclusive, progressive (VIP) congregation of the United Church of Christ. Your presence here is a blessing to us, and we hope you will return often. Cathedral of Hope began in 1970 with a circle of 12 friends, and has since grown into the world s largest progressive Christian church with a primary outreach to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer/questioning people. The VISION of Cathedral of Hope is to be a community of hope proclaiming God s inclusive love, removing barriers to faith and empowering all people to grow in grace toward wholeness. The MISSION of Cathedral of Hope is to reclaim Christianity as a faith of Extravagant Grace, Radical Inclusion and Relentless Compassion. Notes for Newcomers Restrooms are located near the double glass doors behind the Sanctuary. Private rest rooms are available off the hall to the right of the Hall of Heroes area. For more information about the church, please come to the Ministry & Visitor s Center located next to Sources of Hope bookstore. Our worship services are recorded for broadcast around the world. We make every effort to respect your privacy. However, if you would like to ensure that you are not seen on screen, please sit in one of the last five rows of pews in the center section. Large-print bulletins and assisted listening systems are available in the bookstore. In consideration of those seated around you, PLEASE, No Flash Photography during the service. PLEASE, Silence Your Cell Phone! Thank you. Good Morning, Cathedral of Hope! Today we conclude our current sermon series, The Radical Sayings of Jesus. Over the past several weeks, we have explored some of the teachings of Jesus that were certainly radical then, and, as we have discovered, are still considered radical today. Jesus invited those first believers into a new way of living. He encouraged them to see the flaws in religiosity as it was experienced then, and to live into a new and dynamic relationship with God, one that was based on the values of love, grace, forgiveness, compassion and good old-fashioned kindness. I know that might not sound very radical, but, in all truth, knowing how the world is today, it is! He drew them together to learn from his example and then sent them out to live it without regard for how it was received. He knew the difference between intent and impact. Today s radical saying suggests that we should deny ourselves and follow Jesus. Often this has been taken out of context and used to suggest that we should have no regard for ourselves. We may have assumed that Jesus was making it all about him! However, as we will learn today, Jesus was teaching them that when we follow in the ways of God, when we live out these simple values, we actually become more Christ-like we find ourselves fully in Christ. I do hope that this season of sermons has edified as well as challenged us all to take a deeper look into our faith and its expression in the world today. I sincerely hope that we are all prepared to live more fully into our faith, and work, as we reclaim and re-frame Christianity as lived by Jesus, the one that we follow. As I have said each week, the way of Jesus is not easy, but it is life changing. Once again we come together to reclaim our faith and to reaffirm our call as Cathedral of Hope, a place of extravagant grace radical inclusion relentless compassion. Be blessed as we worship today and know that God is with us. Sincerely, in Christ The Reverend Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas, Senior Pastor HOPEQuotes Thankful to the Lord Jesus Christ for sending me here. (Sunday 11 a.m.) K. E. S., Dallas, TX. First-time visitor. STAFF Rev. Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas Rev. Erin Wyma BEECHER WORSHIP NOTES Insight into the various elements of our services I Have Decided Our Prelude this morning is an arrangement for brass quintet and percussion of I Have Decided to Follow Jesus. This hymn originated in India. The lyrics are said to be based on the last words of a man in Assam, north-east India, who along with his family was converted to Christianity in the middle of the 19th century through the efforts of a Welsh missionary. When he was called to renounce his new faith by the village chief, the convert declared, I have decided to follow Jesus. In response to threats to his family, he continued, Though no one join me, still I will follow. His wife was killed, and legend has it that he was executed while singing, The cross before me, the world behind me. This display of faith is reported to have led to the conversion of the chief and others in the village. The formation of these words into a hymn is attributed to the Indian missionary Sadhu Sundar Singh. The melody is also Indian, and entitled Assam after the region where the text originated. Called as Partners in Christ s Service Jane Parker Huber (b. 1926) wrote the words for our Processional Hymn in 1981 for the women s Continued on page 2

5 **GOSPEL LESSON Mark 8: One: Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. All: Come, Holy Spirit. One: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark. All: Glory to you, O God. Rev. Todd Scoggins Jesus summoned the crowd and the disciples, and said to them, If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? Indeed, what can they give in return for their life? Those who are ashamed of me and of my words in this faithless and corrupt generation, of them the Promised One will also be ashamed when all stand before the glory of God with the holy angels. One: All: This is the Gospel of Hope. Praise to you, Creator, Christ and Holy Spirit. **GLORIA Music by Tom Brooks & Don Moen Integrity s Hosanna! Music arr. Steven Couch ; CCLI License # SERMON The Radical Sayings of Jesus Rev. Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas Deny Yourself and Follow Me Continued from page 2 York, where Zundel served as organist for thirty years. Zundel was born and educated in Hochdorf, Germany, but immigrated to the United States. He served different churches in New York and in 1850 began a thirty-year ministry of music at Plymouth Church. Day by Day Day by day, dear Lord, of thee three things I pray: to see thee more clearly, love thee more dearly, follow thee more nearly, day by day. According to tradition, this well-loved prayer was uttered by Saint Richard of Chichester ( ) as he lay on his deathbed. Richard had a turbulent life; he had known riches and poverty, high position and exile, loyal friendship and exclusion. He is remembered for his humility, his perseverance in hard times, his care for the poor, and the strength and generosity of his faith. This text, which has been set to music many times over the centuries, most memorably in the Stephen Schwartz musical Godspell, is sung in a beautiful arrangement for soprano and alto voices, violin, and organ, as our Anthem this morning. Martin How (b. 1931) is a British composer and organist, the son of the late Most Reverend J. C. H. How, Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church. Martin How spent most of his musical career with the Royal School of Church Music, the largest church music organization in Britain, where he was known principally as a choir trainer specializing in the training and motivation of young singers. 3

10 Joanna decides to follow Jesus. Dan Peeler, Minister for Children & Families, and Charlie Rose create beautiful illustrations for use in the Children s Church PowerPoint lessons. Today in Children s Church As we listen to the declaration of Jesus as he told his followers to deny themselves and follow him, we will ask what does it mean to be selfish or selfcentered? When do we act selfishly? We will think about why it is sometimes really hard to give up habits, especially bad habits. We will also remember people like Joanna, a wealthy member of Herod s court, who followed Jesus when he said Take up your cross and follow me. She knew he was saying that following him was not easy since to many people the hardest thing they can do is to center their lives on the love of others. Be the change that you wish to see in the world. Mahatma Gandhi What s your fantasy job? Astronaut!!! I would love to explore space. Teachers / Leaders Wanted Do you have a passion for seeing our youth and young adults grow into a vibrant relationship with God? Are you afraid that maybe you don t have the knowledge or skills to teach? But you think it would be rewarding if you did have the knowledge to teach our youth and young adults? Studies show that anywhere from 70-86% of teens and young adults leave the church at some point in their lives. As LGBT or LGBT-affirming Christians, that number is probably higher. You and I most likely left the church for a period of time because we didn t think we could belong to God or the church because of our orientation or ally-ship. Studies show that if our youth have relationships with teachers who are equipping them to walk in faith they will flourish in their relationship with God and others outside of these church walls. Come and help us prepare our youth and young adults to engage in a vibrant and progressive walk with God, and as they transition from one life stage to the next. You will be well prepared to teach our youth and young adults and you ll grow in your relationship with God too. For more information, contact Alan Womack at awomack@cathedralofhope.com, or th Anniversary Centerpiece Contest The Creative Arts Ministry is sponsoring a 70 s themed centerpiece contest for our church anniversary party at the end of July. The centerpieces will be used as part of the décor on the serving tables at the party and excellent prizes will be awarded to the first, second and third place winners. Contestants will deliver their artistic accomplishment an hour before the party and also take it home. Think of your favorite TV show, movie or fad of the 70 s era and translate it into a thing of beauty for the church! Contact Dan Peeler at dpeeler@cathedralofhope.com with any questions.
