2 Welcome to Cathedral of Hope! What began in 1970 as a circle of 12 friends meeting weekly for worship and fellowship has grown into Cathedral of Hope, a Vibrant, Inclusive, Progressive (VIP) congregation of the United Church of Christ. Founded in and serving beyond the LGBTQ community, our mission is to reclaim Christianity as a faith of extravagant grace, radical inclusion, and relentless compassion by being a people of hope proclaiming God s inclusive love, removing barriers to faith and empowering all to grow in grace toward wholeness. If you are visiting Cathedral of Hope for the first time, we are glad to have you here, are blessed by your presence, and hope you will return often! If there is anything we can do to make your visit more enjoyable, please call on our Ushers to assist you. You re invited to use the restroom that corresponds with your gender identity or the restroom that is the safest and most comfortable for you. Gendered, multiple-occupancy restrooms are located near the double glass doors behind the Sanctuary. All-gender, single-occupancy restrooms are available off the hall to the right of the Hall of Heroes area. For more information about the church, please come to the Ministry & Visitor s Center located next to Sources of Hope. Our worship services are recorded for broadcast worldwide. We make every effort to respect your privacy; however, to ensure that you are not seen on screen, please sit in one of the last five rows of pews in the center section. Large-print bulletins and assisted listening systems are available in the bookstore. Neil s NOTE Good Morning, Cathedral of Hope United Church of Christ! We begin a new sermon series today. Over the next few weeks, we will be looking at some of the characters of the Bible who were called to do amazing things for God. We often assume that the folks that we read of in our Biblical text are people of great integrity and spirituality and must have won great favor with God. We are often led to believe that these characters were perfect; they must have been, or God would not have chosen them. This could not be farther from the truth, however. The women and men that God chose to do great things were less than perfect. They were, in fact, just like us, people who often thought they were unworthy of God s favor. They thought of themselves as insignificant, and certainly not up to the task that they knew God was calling them to do. What we discover is that God often choses us because we do not consider ourselves perfect. God chooses ordinary people to accomplish tasks, both large and small, that help others discover more about themselves, and to contribute to the wonder and awe that we realize as we live into God s loving plan for humanity. People like Moses, David, Ruth, Mary, John, Priscilla, and so many others, all had wounds and pasts that, by many standards, would discount them from God s favor. However, we believe in a God who uses our past, our imperfections, to God s advantage! In fact, I would be so bold as to say that, If you are not perfect, you re ready and that is the sermon series that we enter this month. Join me in exploring how God is instrumental in our transformation, and how this transformation makes us disciples and examples to others searching for the favor of God in their lives, regardless of who they are or how unprepared we all feel to be of value to God. As we worship today, and in the days to come, I know that God will use our experiences to do great things and to transform the world into a place with values where God s values have always been in the margins, in the imperfect lives of those who are open and willing to be transformed by the love and grace of a healing Spirit that is God. Today, let us welcome the Christ in us that will always seek out and welcome the Christ in each other. Sincerely, in Christ The Reverend Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas Senior Pastor STAFF * Rev. (Ephesians 3: 17) The chorus is Into my heart, into my heart, come into my heart, Lord Jesus. Come in today, come in to stay. Come into my heart, Lord Jesus. There is an anonymous second verse that says Out of my heart, out of my heart, shine out of my heart, Lord Jesus. Shine out today, shine out always. Shine out of my heart, Lord Jesus, reminding us that if Jesus lives in us, the world will know by our words and deeds. The Prelude this morning is an arrangement by Jack Schrader featuring oboe accompanied by strings and piano. Here I Am, Lord Here I Am, Lord, also known by its first line, I, the Lord of Sea and Sky, is a well-known Christian hymn written by Father Dan Schutte in The lyrics are based on Isaiah 6:8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? And I said, Here am I; send me! and 1 Samuel 3. Despite its Catholic origins, Schutte s hymn is sung in many Protestant worship services and is found in most newer Christian hymnals. 4 GATHERING OF THE COMMUNITY **EXCHANGE OF PEACE Rev. Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas Rev. Erin Wyma LITURGY OF THE WORD HEBREW LESSON Jeremiah 1: 5-10 The Message Reina Garcia This is what GOD said to Jeremiah: Before I shaped you in the womb, I knew all about you. Before you saw the light of day, I had holy plans for you: A prophet to the nations that s what I had in mind for you. But I said, Hold it, GOD! Look at me. I don t know anything. I m only a boy! GOD told me, Don t say, I m only a boy. I ll tell you where to go and you ll go there. I ll tell you what to say and you ll say it. Don t be afraid of a soul. I ll be right there, looking after you. GOD reached out, touched my mouth, and said, Look! I ve just put my words in your mouth hand-delivered! See what I ve done? I ve given you a job to do among nations and governments! Your job is to pull up and tear down, take apart and demolish, and then start over, building and planting. ANTHEM PASTORAL PRAYER Here I Am, Lord Words and Music by Dan Schutte based on Isaiah 6 arr. 5 **GOSPEL LESSON Luke 2: One: Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. All: Come, Holy Spirit. One: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke. All: Glory to you, O God. Every year the parents of Jesus went to Jerusalem for the festival of the Passover. And when Jesus was twelve years old, they went up as usual for the festival. When the festival was ended and they started to return, the child Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but Mary and Joseph did not know it. Assuming that Jesus was in the group of travelers, they went a day's journey. Then they started to look for him among their relatives and friends. When they did not find Jesus, they returned to Jerusalem to search for him. After three days they found Jesus in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. And all who heard the child were amazed at his understanding and his answers. When Mary and Joseph saw Jesus they were astonished; and Mary said to him, Child, why have you treated us like this? Look, your father and I have been searching for you in great anxiety. Jesus said to them, Why were you searching for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Abba's house? But they did not understand what he said to them. Then Jesus went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them. And Mary treasured all these things in her heart. One: All: This is the Gospel of Hope. Praise to you, Creator, Christ and Holy Spirit. **GLORIA Music by Richard Hillert Concordia Publishing House arr.
