PLEASE, Silence Your Cell Phone! Thank you. Reclaiming Miracles: Save the Best for Last Good Morning, Cathedral of Hope United Church of Christ! Wow! Such a small word, but said with the right intent, it sums up how I felt after the last services of Holy Week and Easter Sunday. I do hope that your Lenten journey and Easter celebrations were meaningful, insightful, challenging, inspiring, renewing, and deepened your experience of the Divine presence of God within you. We enter now the post-easter experience, as the Resurrected Jesus returns to remind the disciples of the promise made: that Jesus would rise again, ultimately and in timely fashion returning to be with God, who would send the Holy Spirit, the Advocate, to be the sustaining presence of God within us. Today we begin a new sermon series in this post-easter time. We are a Vibrant, Inclusive and Progressive community of faith that desires to Connect, Care and Grow, both in personal understanding of God and in deepening relationship with one another. We reclaim Christianity together as a faith of extravagant grace, radical inclusion and relentless compassion. This is our mission. To this end, we see the Bible as our friend and not our enemy. It is a tool to bless and nurture us in our journey of faith. It is not a weapon to hit ourselves, or others, over the head with. As we reclaim our Bible stories, our new sermon series invites us to reclaim the miracles of Jesus. Over the next few weeks, leading into Pentecost, we will take a fresh look at some of the miracles that were witnessed and experienced by some of the early believers. Earlier this year, I asked some folks which miracles they would like to know more about and the list was extensive. I hope that the ones that we have chosen will bring fresh insight, and will help us all to reclaim the stories of old, and to make sense of them in our contemporary world. Today, we look at the first miracle of Jesus, when He turned water into wine at a wedding in Cana. Let us open our hearts, our minds, and our souls to the fresh breath of air, the Holy presence of God who is still in the miracle business. Sincerely, in Christ The Reverend Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas Senior Pastor HOPEQuotes I had not attended CoH for some time because of the tragic drama that has occurred so frequently here. But, I decided to give it a shot again. It is celebrated as a single joyful feast, indeed as the great Lord s Day. Each Sunday of the season is treated as a Sunday of Easter, and, after the Sunday of the Resurrection, they are named Second Sunday of Easter, Third Sunday of Easter, etc. up to the Seventh Sunday of Easter, while the whole fifty-day period concludes with Pentecost Sunday. Easter Sunday and Pentecost correspond to preexisting Jewish feasts: The first day of Pesach and the holiday of Shavu ot. The Day of Resurrection John of Damascus, of the eighthcentury Easter church, where great importance was placed on Easter worship, was one of the great hymn writers of his era. This hymn was traditionally sung at midnight at the beginning of Easter Day, with lighting of candles, brilliant music, and shouts of Christ is risen! The first verse uses the symbolism of the Passover for the resurrection, calling Easter the Passover of gladness. Cover designed by Charles Owen. 4 **INVOCATION Rev. Dr. Michael Diaz THE WORD MODERN LESSON from Hope as Old as Fire by Steven Charleston Zante Garcia No more lonely hours, no more doubt or struggle. For this day shimmers in the light of the Spirit. It has been touched by hands that healed the blind, lifted up in arms that raised the dead. It is the day of salvation for the faith that would claim it. Stand up. Let old cares fall to dust around you. Stretch out. Be believing. See the light before you. This day is your new beginning. No more lonely hours, no more doubt or struggle. Not today. Not for you. This day is a miracle waiting for you to live it. 5 **GOSPEL LESSON John 2: 1-11 One: God be with you. All: And also with you. One: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John. All: Glory to you, O God. Rev. Andria Davis On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and the disciples had also been invited to the wedding. When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, They have no wine. And Jesus said to her, Mother, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come. His mother said to the servants, Do whatever he tells you. Now standing there were six stone water jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to them, Fill the jars with water. And they filled them up to the brim. Then Jesus said to them, Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward. So they took it. When the steward tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the steward called the bridegroom and said, Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the inferior wine after the guests have become drunk. But you have kept the good wine until now. Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and the disciples believed in him. One: All: This is the Gospel of Hope. Praise to you, Creator, Christ and Holy Spirit. **GOSPEL RESPONSE All: Celtic Alleluia Words and Music by Fintan O Carroll and Christopher Walker, adapted Fintan O Carrol and Christopher Walker OneLicense.net License #A SERMON Reclaiming Miracles: Rev. 6 THE EUCHARIST PRESENTATION OF OUR TITHES AND OFFERINGS OFFERTORY CELEBRATION OF HOLY COMMUNION INVITATION TO THE TABLE You Deserve the Glory Words and Music by Eva-Lena Hellmark; arr. Travis Cottrell Denise Lee, soloist Sanctuary Choir and Orchestra One: All: The Gospel writers tell of our risen Savior, who at table with two of the disciples took bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them. Their eyes were opened and they recognized the risen Christ in the breaking of the bread. In company with all believers in every time and beyond time, we come to this table to know the risen Christ in the breaking of the bread. CONSECRATION OF THE ELEMENTS One: All: One: All: One: All: On the night you were betrayed you took the bread; after giving thanks you broke it and said: This is my body, broken for you, and as you eat it remember me. This is my body, broken for you, and as you eat it remember me. On the night you were betrayed you held the cup; after giving thanks you lifted it up. This is my life poured out for you, and as you drink it remember me. This is my life poured out for you, and as you drink it remember me. So we thank you for the cup and for the bread; for we see the life you gave and the blood you shed. And we remember your wondrous love, you gave your body, you shed your blood. And we remember your wondrous love, you gave your Spirit to live in us. And we remember your wondrous love, you gave your body, you shed your blood. And we remember your wondrous love, you gave your Spirit to live in us. DISTRIBUTION OF THE ELEMENTS TO OUR GUESTS Cathedral of Hope celebrates an open communion. We understand the sharing of the bread and the cup in Jesus name to be a representation of an ancient vision of God s feast for all peoples. We don t require you to be a member of this church, or any church, to participate with us in this feast of grace. Simply come forward at the ushers direction. After dipping a wafer in the cup, which contains non-alcoholic grape juice, the minister will place it on your tongue and offer a brief blessing. If you prefer to serve yourself, cup your hands in front of you as you come to receive communion. Gluten-free Wafers are available from the silver intinction set at the center point. Please indicate your need to the ushers on the center aisle and they will direct you to the appropriate position. We ask that you serve yourself take a wafer and dip it in the juice in order to avoid cross-contamination by the server. During the serving of Holy Communion, feel free to join in our Music during Communion. Please also be mindful of those around you who are in prayer and meditation. Welcome Guest Artist Denise Lee Dallas actress and cabaret chanteuse Denise Lee will be our guest artist TODAY. Denise Lee is an award winning singer and actress with a career that spans over two decades, and a great friend of Cathedral of Hope. Invite your friends and family to join us for this special morning of worship! 4

7 MUSIC DURING COMMUNION TO OUR GUESTS It has become a tradition at the Cathedral of Hope to rise as we end our time of communion (as indicated by **), join hands as an expression of our unity in Christ, and lift them up in glory to God. We invite you to join as you are able, in body or spirit. Hymn of Promise In the bulb there is a flower; in the seed, an apple tree; in cocoons, a hidden promise: butterflies will soon be free! In the cold and snow of winter there s a spring that waits to be, unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see. There s a song in every silence, seeking word and melody; there s a dawn for every darkness, bringing hope to you and me. From the past will come the future; what it holds, a mystery, unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see. In our end is our beginning; in our time, infinity; in our doubt there is believing; in our life, eternity. In our death, a resurrection; at the last, a victory, unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see. Above All Above all powers, above all things, above all nature and all that we can see; Above all wisdom and all our self-made plans, you were there before the world began. Above all dominions, above all thrones, above all wonders the world has ever known; Above all wealth and treasures of the earth, there s no way to measure what You re worth. What the Youth are Learning this Week Did Jesus know he was God? We often assume Jesus of Nazareth knew he was God, but, some say there is little in the Gospels to suggest he did. As an infant, angels and wise men told his parents that he was going to save Israel. As a 12-year-old, he told his parents they should have expected to find him in his Father s house. Just before Jesus began his public ministry at age 30, the Gospels talk of his three temptations by the devil. This may imply that Jesus own divinity was hidden from him, because, of course, God would not have been tempted. But was Jesus tempted, or did the devil just try to tempt him? As Jesus ministry developed, he vocalized increasingly that his relationship to God was unique, unlike what anyone had experienced before. At the Passover feast, he knew that his life was being poured out for the forgiveness of sins and so that all who believe in him may have eternal life. By the time that he was on the cross, he knew he had the power to grant someone (the thief on the cross next to him) eternal life. But it was the early church-especially in the writings of the Apostles as they looked back on the story, miracles, and resurrection of Jesus-that Bible writers could fully recognize his divinity. Conversation starters to talk about this with your youth about this topic: What are some new things you ve learned about yourself recently? How does it feel when someone tells you something about yourself that you didn t realize before? What kinds of things do you think Jesus learned about himself as he grew up? Do you think Jesus knew he was God right away? Why or why not?
