PLEASE, Silence Your Cell Phone! Thank you. Life in The CHURCH Good Morning, Cathedral of Hope United Church of Christ! What a joy it is to be together again as we continue our sermon series that focuses on our relationship with God, self and others under the title, Life in the Church. Throughout this month, we are recalling the experience of the early believers who began to meet together to build a new community, one that was devoted to prayer, fellowship, and the mutual support of one another. They were drawn together by their individual desire to create something bigger. They felt the presence of God in their sojourning together, and worked out their faith in community. Today we will talk about this, as we come to a better understanding of what the role of the early church was. We will be invited to see our role in the beloved community a term that probably better fits the model that Jesus envisioned. This beloved community, Cathedral of Hope, is one that continues to evolve. From its very founding more than 46 years ago, this church was envisioned to be unlike any that existed. We remain faithful to the vision of the church modeled by the early followers and believers those who wanted deep connection with God, moved by the overwhelming commitment to build community together. Today, we are invited into this great commission of Jesus. He invited them, and today, us, to go and tell all the nations of God s good news: that no one was excluded and that there was more than enough love, grace, peace and shalom to go around. He called them to share with one another from their bounty, their abundance and to see that no one was left behind. This is the new community that Jesus called into being, and I sincerely hope that this is the kind of community that we continue to create, and re-create, here at CoH. Know that you are welcome in this place in fact there is no better place to be today! Sincerely, in Christ The Reverend Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas, Senior Pastor HOPEQuotes The experience started with the greeters at the front doors to the volunteers working inside to get us all seated to the friendly members who welcomed us. The Praise and Worship was AMAZING and it set the tone for the awesome message that Pastor Neil delivered. We just could not believe what we were hearing. 3 ORDER of WORSHIP August 14, & 11 a.m. 13th Sunday After Pentecost LITURGY OF PREPARATION PRELUDE GATHERING OF THE COMMUNITY **EXCHANGE OF PEACE **PROCESSIONAL HYMN Words by Edward Mote, adapted Built on the Rock setting by Paul Manz David Moldenhauer, organist Rev. Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas Rev. Dr. Rev. Erin Wyma The Solid Rock Music by William B. Bradbury OneLicense.net License #A **The people will rise in body or spirit. Cover designed by Charles Owen. Additional graphics created by Chris Chism, Dan Peeler and Charlie Rose. Publication designed by Charles Owen and David Moldenhauer. 1 THE SOLID ROCK WORSHIP NOTES Insight into the various elements of our services Built on the Rock The Prelude this morning is an organ setting of the powerful Scandinavian Lutheran hymn Built on the Rock. From the opening lyrics Built on the Rock the Church shall stand, even when steeples are falling, through the third verse s We are God s house of living stones, built for God s own habitation, to the powerful closing of the final verse, where God promises I know my own, my own, know me; You, not the world, my face shall see. My peace I leave with you. Amen. the words, by Norwegian Nikolai F.S. Grundtvig, offer a stirring affirmation of faith, proclaiming that the people, not the building, make up the church. The soaring melody KIRKEN DEN ER ET GAMMELT HUS was composed by Ludwig M. Lindemann expressly for this text, to be used in the Lutheran Church of Norway. The organ setting, by Lutheran organist and composer Paul Manz ( ), features a quick moving accompaniment based on snippets of the hymntune, while the pedal plays the stately melody. The Solid Rock Faith in Christ, the solid rock to sustain the believer is the focus of this hymn by English Baptist pastor Edward Mote. Through all the trials of life, faith built on the solid rock gives the believer hope. This metaphor, along with that of sinking sand, is found in the parable of the wise one who built a house on rock and the foolish one who built a house on sand (Matthew 7: 24-27). The tune entitled THE SOLID ROCK was written by gospel hymn composer William Bradbury.

4 **INVOCATION Chris Chism LITURGY OF THE WORD FIRST LESSON Acts 6: 1-6 Anita Haddy In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Hellenistic Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. Sisters and brothers, choose seven from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word. This proposal pleased the whole group. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit; also Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to Judaism. These they presented to the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them. MINISTRY IN MUSIC PASTORAL PRAYER Come Sunday Words: traditional Spiritual; Music by Duke Ellington from Black, Brown & Beige Arielle Collier, soloist; David Moldenhauer, piano Worship Note below LORD S PRAYER Music by Albert Hay Malotte G. Schirmer, Inc. OneLicense.net License#A Come Sunday Come Sunday is a song derived from Duke Ellington s instrumental jazz suite Black, Brown and Beige (1943), a musical history of African Americans, which premiered at Carnegie Hall in In 1958 Ellington ( ) added text to this instrumental theme and the song became a standard of his sacred jazz concerts. The song is ultimately about the providence of God in our lives. The refrain addresses God directly, Lord, dear Lord above, God Almighty, God of love, and then makes a petition, please look down and see my people through. The stanzas point to hope and heaven, concluding that with God s blessing we can make it through eternity. 2

5 **GOSPEL LESSON Matthew 16: One: All: One: All: Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. Come, Holy Spirit. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew. Glory to you, O God. When Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked the disciples, What do people say about who the Chosen One is? And they said, "Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets. Jesus said to them, But who do you say that I am? Simon Peter answered, You are the Christ, the Firstborn of the living God. Jesus replied, Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Abba God who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the realm of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Then Jesus strictly ordered the disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah. One: All: This is the Gospel of Hope. Praise to you, Creator, Christ and Holy Spirit. **GLORIA Word and Music by Danny Ray arr. Steven Couch Cathedral of Hope CCLI License # SERMON Life in the Church Rev. Dr. Neil G. 6 CELEBRATION OF HOLY COMMUNION WORDS OF INSTITUTION PRAYER OF CONSECRATION INVITATION TO OUR GUESTS Cathedral of Hope celebrates an open communion. We understand the sharing of the bread and the cup in Jesus name to be a representation of an ancient vision of God s feast for all peoples. We don t require you to be a member of this church, or any church, to participate with us in this feast of grace. Simply come forward at the ushers direction. After dipping a wafer in the cup, the minister will place it on your tongue and offer a brief blessing. If you prefer to serve yourself, cup your hands in front of you as you come to receive communion. Gluten-free Wafers are available from the silver intinction set at the center point. Please indicate your need to the ushers on the center aisle and they will direct you to the appropriate position. We ask that you serve yourself take a wafer and dip it in the juice in order to avoid cross-contamination by the server. MUSIC DURING DISTRIBUTION All Are Welcome Let us build a house where love can dwell and all can safely live, A place where saints and children tell how hearts learn to forgive. Built of hopes and dreams and visions, rock of faith and vault of grace; Here the love of Christ shall end divisions: All are welcome, all are welcome, all are welcome in this place. Let us build a house where love is found in water, wine and wheat; A banquet hall on holy ground, where peace and justice meet. Here the love of God, through Jesus, is revealed in time and space; As we share in Christ the feast that frees us: All are welcome, all are welcome, all are welcome in this place. Let us build a house where all are named, their songs and visions heard And loved and treasured, taught and claimed as words within the Word. Built of tears and cries and laughter, prayers of faith and songs of grace, Let this house proclaim from floor to rafter: All are welcome, all are welcome, all are welcome in this place. Just as I am, thy love unknown has broken every barrier down; now to be thine, yea, thine alone, O Lamb of God, I come, I come. Refrain: I come broken to be mended, I come wounded to be healed. I come desperate to be rescued, I come empty to be filled. I come guilty to be pardoned through the love of Christ, the Lamb. And I m welcomed with open arms, praise God, just as I am. Just as I am, I would be lost, but mercy and grace my freedom bought. And now, to glory in the cross, O Lamb of God, I come, I come. Refrain In My Life, Lord En mi vida, gloria te doy, gloria te doy. Todd Scoggins at tscoggins@cathedralofhope.com or call Safety First Policy Explained While we realize this is a very controversial issue, best practices dictate that all backpacks, large packages (except from the church book store), briefcases, suitcases, large purses, etc. (anything larger than 15 x 20 ) are prohibited in the main sanctuary spaces, meeting rooms and during all benevolence events. This policy has been put in place both during large gatherings, such as worship times and meetings, and in our benevolence ministries. It is not a matter of being un-welcoming, but of care for our guests and an abundance of caution in addition to creating a feeling of a Secure Zone. In our benevolence ministries, we have witnessed a few of our guests display weapons and illegal drugs from backpacks which, in those moments, presented a serious security risk to all attending the events including our volunteers, staff and other guests. In addition, the packs on the floor create obstructions should there ever be an emergency when we need to evacuate quickly. Bags may be checked in the reception office or guests will be asked to take them to their vehicles.

9 A new community forms. Dan Peeler, Minister for Children & Families, and Charlie Rose create beautiful illustrations for use in the Children s Church PowerPoint lessons. Today in Children s Church In Children s Church this week, we will tell about a time when we were the last in a group to be chosen to do something or served your food and ask how it made us feel. We will remember that sometimes leaders of groups try to do too much by themselves and often jobs are not done right or completed in time because they run out of time. Some people just have a hard time asking for help. In the PowerPoint story, some of Jesus original Disciples discuss why they should not try to preach and serve people meals at the same time. In our own discussion, we will each think about a person we would trust to help us complete a chore. Who would that person be and why would we trust that person? We will also be continuing our art projects in partnership with 29 Pieces in creating our circular posters to create an atmosphere of respect. 11 The Cities that Built the Bible Bethlehem, Babylon, and Jerusalem are known as the setting for epic stories from the Bible featuring rustic mangers, soaring towers, and wooden crosses. These cities were instrumental to the creation of the Bible as we know it today. Author Robert Cargill, Assistant Professor of Classics and Religious Studies at the University of Iowa, is an archaeologist, Bible scholar, and host of numerous television documentaries, such as the History Channel series Bible Secrets Revealed. Taking us behind-the-scenes of the Bible, Cargill blends archaeology, biblical history, and personal journey as he explores these cities and their role in the creation of the Bible. He reveals surprising facts such as what the Bible says about the birth of Jesus and how Mary s Virgin Birth caused problems for the early church. We ll also see how the God of the Old Testament was influenced by other deities, that there were numerous non-biblical books written about Moses, Jacob, and Jesus in antiquity, and how far more books were left out of the Bible than were let in during the messy, political canonization process. 12 Check Out the CoH Bylaws! Cathedral of Hope has adopted a congregational model of church governance which depends upon informed and active participation of all Church members. The CoH Bylaws spell out many of the necessary elements of how we govern our Church. The current Bylaws are available on the Church website ( Be an active and informed member and review the Bylaws. Then provide your comments, questions and suggestions to one of the CoH Bylaws Committee members who can be found after worship services. (P.S., these Committee members wear red name badges for your easy identification). You may also contact Don Day, Bylaws Committee Chairperson, at daygenes@aol.com. CoH on Facebook and Twitter Stay connected with your church through Social Media; LIKE the Cathedral of Hope Facebook page and follow us on Twitter. That s where you ll find late breaking news and information about events, ministry and much more. Teachers / Leaders Wanted Do you have a passion for seeing our youth and young adults grow into a vibrant relationship with God? Are you afraid that maybe you don t have the knowledge or skills to teach? But you think it would be rewarding if you did have the knowledge to teach our youth and young adults? Studies show that anywhere from 70-86% of teens and young adults leave the church at some point in their lives. As LGBT or LGBT-affirming Christians, that number is probably higher. You and I most likely left the church for a period of time because we didn t think we could belong to God or the church because of our orientation or ally-ship. Studies show that if our youth have relationships with teachers who are equipping them to walk in faith, they will flourish in their relationship with God and others outside of these church walls. Come and help us prepare our youth and young adults to engage in a vibrant and progressive walk with God, and as they transition from one life stage to the next. You will be well prepared to teach our youth and young adults and you ll grow in your relationship with God too. For more information, contact Anita Haddy at ahaddy@cathedralofhope.com, or The Cathedral s Five Core Values: We are a people of Compassion. We are ministers who embody the tangible love of a Savior who fed the hungry, healed the hurting, and told us bluntly that what we do to the least, we do to him. We are a people of Inclusion. This is a value Jesus held. We believe Jesus came to include, not to exclude. All are welcome around his table. We are a people of Liberation. We seek to challenge all oppression, particularly the oppression of queer people. By embodying grace, we live out our liberation until all are set free. We are a people of Hope. We are people filled with joy and unrelenting optimism because we believe: God is good. With God all things are possible. God can use us to transform the world. We are a people of Jesus. We believe Jesus was the incarnation of God s grace. Jesus resisted the status quo of oppression and showed us the way to the abundant life God intends for all people.
