Large-print bulletins and assisted listening systems are available in the bookstore. Neil s NOTE Good Morning, Cathedral of Hope United Church of Christ! We are exploring what the world might look like today if we had lived into the vision and mission of Jesus. Our sermon series, What If, calls us to think about Lent differently. Instead of Lent being a time when we give up something, perhaps Lent could be a time of preparing to reclaim the world. I know that sounds ambitious, but if we believe that God sent Jesus into the world because God believed the world was worth saving, then perhaps, as followers of Jesus, we too should believe that today. By sending Jesus into the world, God demonstrated a heart for humanity and their lives. Our faithful response today must, therefore, be the same. We must demonstrate a heart for those around us and, like Jesus, live lives that will save the world today. I believe that the church can save the world, but to do so, it must call us to reject the dominant theology of self and embrace a less popular theology, a progressive theology the theology of Jesus - of us. Today we use the season of Lent to call us back to this theology. Jesus served God by serving others. On almost every occasion that we read of an act of Jesus, it involves his impact on someone else. His life points to a greater good, to God. What would our world look like? Could our world be saved today by similar actions? Could we use this Lent to prepare ourselves to receive the message of a greater good that moves us to warm the hearts of others through serving and, by serving each other, serve God? It seems to me that hearts need to be warmed again, softened from the acts of selfishness to acts of selflessness and perhaps, just perhaps, the world, our country, our state, our city, our communities might be saved. God believed that the world was worth saving and I do as well. More than 2000 years ago Jesus entered the world, fully human, to be about this big task. Today, we have the Spirit of God within us, calling us out of apathy and into action. We call upon our spiritual strength that is both individual and collective to cast out the temptations of the world and to co-create with God. Ours is a world worth saving; and I invite you to join me, this Lent, in saving the world - for God s sake. Sincerely, in Christ The Reverend Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas Senior Pastor STAFF * Rev. Together we confess the brokenness Christ came to heal. Gracious God, in Jesus Christ you teach us to love our neighbors, but we build dividing walls of hostility. You show us how to love one another, but we hide ourselves from our own human family. You ask us to seek out the stranger and welcome the guest, but we lock ourselves up inside our own fear. You want us to share your abundant gifts with the poor, but we cling tightly to our possessions and our privilege. Have mercy on us, loving God. Forgive our sins, open our hearts, and change our lives. Silence for Personal Reflection WORDS OF ASSURANCE 2

Thanks be to God. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew. Then the mother of Zebedee s sons came to Jesus with her sons and, kneeling, asked a favor of him. What is it you want? he asked. She said, Grant that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right and the other at your left in your new realm. You don t know what you are asking, Jesus said to them. Can you drink the cup I am going to drink? We can, they answered. Jesus said to them, You will indeed drink from my cup, but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared by God. When the ten heard about this, they were indignant with the two brothers. Jesus called them together and said, You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your worker just as the Human One did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. 6 LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST PRESENTATION OF OUR TITHES AND OFFERINGS OFFERTORY THE GREAT THANKSGIVING FOR LENT INVITATION TO THE TABLE Take It to the Lord in Prayer by Nolan Williams, Jr. Cathedral of Hope Gospel Choir Donald Jones, director Kevin Terry, piano; Ellen Gay, drums WORDS OF INSTITUTION In Remembrance (Continued from page 1) serving at North Holmwood, England, when he wrote the hymn. Born in Dublin on March 21, 1855, Somerset T.C. Lowry spent his life as a priest in the Anglican Church. He wrote sixty hymns and several devotional books. The traditional Dutch melody, IN BABILONE, was first printed in 1710 in a collection of old and new Dutch peasant songs and country dances. As three of the four phrases are the same, this simple melody is quite easily learned and must have been popular even with untrained singers. 4

7 Words by Ragan Cortney; Music by Buryl Red OneLicense.net License # A RED DISTRIBUTION OF THE ELEMENTS TO OUR GUESTS Cathedral of Hope celebrates an open communion. We understand the sharing of the bread and the cup in Jesus name to be a representation of an ancient vision of God s feast for all peoples. We don t require you to be a member of this church, or any church, to participate with us in this feast of grace. Simply come forward at the ushers direction. After dipping a wafer in the cup, which contains non-alcoholic grape juice, the minister will place it on your tongue and offer a brief blessing. If you prefer to serve yourself, cup your hands in front of you as you come to receive communion. Gluten-free Wafers are available from the silver intinction set at the center point. Please indicate your need to the ushers on the center aisle and they will direct you to the appropriate position. We ask that you serve yourself take a wafer and dip it in the juice in order to avoid cross-contamination by the server. During the serving of Holy Communion, feel free to join in our Music during Communion. Please also be mindful of those around you who are in prayer and meditation. But By Love Our Anthem this morning, But By Love, uses words from Philippians and Galatians to create a prayerful reminder that we do everything through Christ Jesus, and that we are called to serve one another. The lush accompaniment with dramatic harmonic shifts under a flowing melody brings to life the beautiful lyrics. Composer/arranger Dan Forrest (b. 1978) has been described as having an undoubted gift for writing beautiful music that is truly magical, with works hailed as magnificent, very cleverly constructed sound sculpture. Since its first publication in 2001, Dan s music has sold millions of copies, and is well established in the repertoire of choirs in the United States and around the world. 5

Time of Fellowship Please join us for refreshments after the service in the Fellowship Hall. Cathedral of Hope United Church of Christ 5910 Cedar Springs Road Dallas, TX We Are Called Our Recessional during the season of Lent is adapted from We Are Called by David Haas. Haas (b. 1956) is one of the most prominent Catholic composers since the mid-1980s. His songs are musically engaging and accessible to congregations. We Are Called, written in 1988, captures the energy and enthusiasm of the protest folk song style of the 1960s. These earlier folk songs urged us to action. The action in We Are Called is inspired by Micah 6: 8: and what does God require of you, but to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with your God? 7

10 News BRIEFS February 25, 2018 Celebrate Black LGBTQ People and Cultures In honor of Black History Month, the Coat of Colours Council at Cathedral of Hope will be sharing stories and little known facts about Black LGBTQ people and cultures. These weekly articles are meant to enlighten and inspire the reader, and to offer a deeper connection to our history and cultures. Also, follow the daily stories over the next month online. Horace L. Griffin Rev. Dr. Horace L. Griffin is an Episcopalian minister who wrote the book Their Own Receive Them Not. He decided to write this book after experiencing and witnessing how African Americans LGBTQ persons were being treated in African American churches. The book s publication was ground breaking and included current day topics for the Black LGBTQ population. Important chapters discussed the Bible, family, church, Down Low, AIDS, silence, and passing from an overall population perspective. One of the most interesting chapters in Griffin s book is on Pastoral Care and Counseling. He advocates that Black LGBTQ people should not have to exchange their culture, family, and background to feel God s love in the Black church in any denominations. He asks Black pastors, ministers, church leadership, and families to challenge their concept of oppressiveness and marginalization. He wanted them to be more open toward accepting their LGBTQ members including family because they are children of God. He shared in his book that the journey of Black LGBTQ is not much different than the people that Jesus had to endure like his own family and peer group. Griffin states that African American lesbians and gays have endured a history of misunderstanding, pain, sorrow, and rejection by their own people, not unlike Jesus struggles with his fellow Jews. He also shared that the church has a responsibility to look again at how they treat people where they encounter them. He states May this book embolden African American lesbians and gays, inside and outside of church communities, to confront the religious injustice imposed on them by African American clergy and laypeople and challenge them to understand homophobia and heterosexual supremacy. Griffin was hopeful that his book would enlighten the heterosexual population so they could relinquish their primitive theological thinking to be more like Jesus which was open and accepting of all. Additionally, Griffin did receive a 2006 Lambda Literary Award in LGBT studies for this grounding break literary contribution. Read more at horace_griff.php#wqdkrhy27cguw5oh Horace L. Griffin. 11 Today in Children s Church Though Jesus public ministry was relatively short, lasting about three years, he reached a lot of people, teaching them with words, but mostly by example. He preached to young and old alike and through his actions demonstrated that the best way to serve God was to be of service to other people, especially those who were not able to serve themselves. His outreach was to the povertystricken, the chronically ill, and the marginalized, people in God s special-interest group.
