Founded in and serving beyond the LGBTQ community, Cathedral of Hope s mission is to reclaim Christianity as a faith of extravagant grace, radical inclusion and relentless compassion. Your presence here is a blessing to us, and we hope you will return often. The VISION of Cathedral of Hope is to be a community of hope proclaiming God s inclusive love, removing barriers to faith and empowering all people to grow in grace toward wholeness. Notes for Newcomers Gendered, multiple-occupancy restrooms are located near the double glass doors behind the Sanctuary. Allgender, single-occupancy restrooms are available off the hall to the right of the Hall of Heroes area. PLEASE, Silence Your Cell Phone! Thank you. CoH SUNDAY Worship Sinning Like a Christian: PRIDE Good Morning, Cathedral of Hope United Church of Christ! Today we celebrate Pride here in Dallas, so it felt wholly appropriate that we should consider pride as the deadly sin in our series today! Later today, we will be walking along Cedar Springs Road, in the Pride parade. This annual festival, and others like it around the world, reminds us of the struggles of our LGBTQI communities of the past, and of the present. They encourage us to celebrate and to recommit to speak up for the other, making the cause for equality and justice a priority, specifically for minorities in our world. I have often been asked, Why do we celebrate pride? and Doesn t the Bible say that pride comes before a fall? It always surprises me that people quote scripture without really considering its context or knowing anything about the text that they quote! The actual Bible verse says this: Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall. The quote is from the book of Proverbs, which is a book made up of wise sayings, or words for the wise. This particular saying suggests at least two meanings. The first meaning is that when one becomes over confident and stops thinking sensibly, when success goes to one s head, that person is bound to suffer or face disappointment. In other words, too much arrogance and self-pride are sure to bring disappointing results. The other possibility is that it means exactly what it says, Pride goes before a fall the moment you lose pride in whatever, it shows that you are about to fall! In all seriousness, it is not wrong to be proud of yourself, of who God has created you to be, but excessive pride or vanity leads a person toward their decline and can be dangerous for us both individually and as a community. Today we are proud, but we are proud in balance with humility, with modesty of behavior and respect, giving credit wherever it is due to God who calls us forward to be proud as a people of justice and equality. Let us celebrate our pride pride in a God who created us for such a time as this. May our shared experience of worship today inspire us to be better, do better, choosing to empty ourselves, ready to fill ourselves up anew, living in the abundant grace of the Good News of God. Sincerely, in Christ The Reverend Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas Senior Pastor HOPEQuotes I cannot begin to tell you what your sermons mean to me, and although we have never met in person, I can feel the love and caring you have and give to all of your parishioners. 3 ORDER of WORSHIP September 17, & 11 a.m. Third Sunday in Ordinary Time LITURGY OF PREPARATION PRELUDE CALL TO WORSHIP **PROCESSIONAL HYMN Over the Rainbow Words by E.Y. Harburg; Music by Harold Arlen; arr. Mark Hayes Gary Barkey, trombone; Les Holben, piano Ours the Journey Rev. Dr. Michael Diaz WORSHIP NOTES Insight into the various musical elements of our services Ours the Journey The lyrics and hymn tune to Ours the Journey (also known as In the Midst of New Dimensions) were written by Julian Rush (b. 1936). Rush was born in Meridian, Mississippi, educated at the Perkins School of Theology, SMU, and the University of Denver. In 1983, Rush was named the founding director of the Colorado AIDS Project. An ordained United Methodist minister, he served churches in Dallas, Denver, Boulder, and Colorado Springs for 17 years before coming out as an openly gay man. The hymn was originally written on the theme of diversity for a meeting of the Rocky Mountain Conference. Rush sought to incorporate Native American spiritual imagery with Hebrew imagery in the lyrics. He learned about native spirituality from a friend in Colorado. The text and tune were written simultaneously. Words and Music by Julian Rush Julian B. Rush OneLicense.net License #A NEW DIMENSIONS **INVOCATION **The people will rise in body or spirit. 1

4 GATHERING OF THE COMMUNITY **EXCHANGE OF PEACE Rev. Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas Rev. Erin Wyma LITURGY OF THE WORD EPISTLE LESSON Philippians 2: 3-11 Rev. Andria Davis Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility regard others as better than yourselves. Let each of you look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others. Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus: Christ, though in the image of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be clung to but instead became completely empty and took on the image of oppressed humankind: born into the human condition, found in the likeness of a human being. Jesus was thus humbled obediently accepting death, even death on a cross! Because of this, God has highly exalted Christ and gave to Jesus the name above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee must bend in the heavens, on the earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God. ANTHEM At the Name of Jesus Words adapted from Philippians 2: 6-11; Music by Cindy Berry Sanctuary Choir and Orchestra Worship Note Below RITE OF RECONCILIATION PRAYER OF CONFESSION One: All: Listening God, sometimes we pray confidently, trusting in your love. Sometimes we approach you fearfully, conscious of our own failure. Sometimes we are reluctant to pray, evading your call to us. But always you hear us. And so we have confidence in your company, to know ourselves as you know us, and to bring our confessions. Let us pray. Silence for self-reflection God of justice and mercy, we know that we have fallen silent when we should have spoken up. We have ignored the cries of the innocent and joined the crowds in calls of judgment. We have mistaken revenge for justice and have sought punishment to ease our pain. Forgive us, God, for not seeing our own faults, and for not holding ourselves responsible for our inaction and injustice. Restore us, God, to the ways Jesus taught us. Call us into the paths of love and reconciliation and guide us to live into your forgiveness and peace. In the name of Jesus, the Christ. Amen. WORDS OF ASSURANCE One: God has opened our ears and our hearts to know love and forgiveness. There is nothing we need to do other than love one another and love God, for all things come from God s love. You have been forgiven and are restored to God. Live in the way of Christ. Amen. At the Name of Jesus Since 1985, Cindy Berry s setting of the words of Philippians 2, At the Name of Jesus, has become a recognized standard in church choral literature. Sectional in nature, the piece begins gently in a minor key punctuated by a few powerful statements, before settling into a lyrical, almost praise chorus melody on the words At the name of Jesus, which builds to a dramatic ending. Cindy Berry was born in Houston and currently lives in Killeen. She is a composer/ arranger of sacred choral anthems and piano collections published by several major publishers. 2

5 GRADUAL Choir: All: Speak, O Lord, as we come to you to receive the food of your holy word. Take your truth, plant it deep in us; shape and fashion us in your likeness. Words and Music by Keith Getty and Stuart Townend Thankyou Music CCLI License # **GOSPEL LESSON Matthew 23: 1-13 One: All: One: All: God be with you. And also with you. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew. Glory to you, O God. Jesus said to the crowds and to the disciples, The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses seat; therefore, do whatever they teach you and follow it; but do not do as they do, for they do not practice what they teach. They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on the shoulders of others; but they themselves are unwilling to lift a finger to move them. They do all their deeds to be seen by others; for they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long. They love to have the place of honor at banquets and the best seats in the synagogues, and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, and to have people call them rabbi. But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all students. And call no one on earth your mother or father, for you have only one Parent our loving God in heaven. Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one instructor, the Messiah. The greatest among you will be your servant. All who exalt themselves will be humbled, and all who humble themselves will be exalted. One: All: This is the Gospel of Hope. Praise to you, Creator, Christ and Holy Spirit. 3

6 **GLORIA Music by Richard Hillert Concordia Publishing House arr. Steven Couch; OneLicense.net License #A SERMON Sinning Like a Christian Rev. Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas Pride LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST PRESENTATION OF OUR TITHES AND OFFERINGS OFFERTORY Who I Was Born to Be Words and Music by Audra Mae Butts, Johan Fransson, Tobias Lundgren and Mikael Larsson Marlene Alderman, soloist Strings of the Orchestra Les Holben, piano Roscoe Compton Worship Note Below See Text-to-Give on p. 13 TO OUR GUESTS Cathedral of Hope celebrates an open communion. We understand the sharing of the bread and the cup in Jesus name to be a representation of an ancient vision of God s feast for all peoples. We don t require you to be a member of this church, or any church, to participate with us in this feast of grace. Simply come forward at the ushers direction. After dipping a wafer in the cup, which contains non-alcoholic grape juice, the minister will place it on your tongue and offer a brief blessing. If you prefer to serve yourself, cup your hands in front of you as you come to receive communion. Gluten-free Wafers are available from the silver intinction set at the center point. Please indicate your need to the ushers on the center aisle and they will direct you to the appropriate position. We ask that you serve yourself take a wafer and dip it in the juice in order to avoid cross-contamination by the server. During the serving of Holy Communion, feel free to join in our Music during Communion. Please also be mindful of those around you who are in prayer and meditation. Who I Was Born to Be Who I Was Born to Be is the first original song recorded by Susan Boyle and appears on her 2009 multi-platinum debut album, I Dreamed a Dream. The lyrics were written especially for Boyle by singer/songwriter Audra Mae, grandniece of Judy Garland. In an interview with MTV, Audra Mae stated, I knew it needed to be a song that made sense for her to sing, so I went online and researched her and her life and found out how she got to be where she is, and it came from that. I knew it needed to be something that she could be proud to sing. The music to the song was composed by Johan Fransson, Mikael Larsson, and Tobias Lundgren. 4

Pack the Pantry NEXT Sunday, September 24! Imagine waking up on Monday morning, looking forward to the one full meal you might receive this entire week. You make the trek to Cathedral of Hope by hopping a train whose $5 fare you wrestle with Should I save it for food or spend it on a transportation fare that, if not checked by an officer, I might be able to avoid paying? You walk to the church from Inwood Station, and you patiently wait until the doors open. As always, you re warmly welcomed by an incredibly efficient and loving group of volunteers, and you enjoy an icare meal that s prepared with a great deal of planning and heart by yet another incredibly warm-hearted group of volunteers. It s time to leave, so you get ready to claim the bag of groceries that, if rationed, can last a few days. But something s different today. The Cathedral of Hope pantry is experiencing a shortage, so the bag contains half of what it usually contains. What happened? I share this scenario with you as a reminder that the 5,000 bags of groceries donated each year do indeed make a difference. With our growing outreach to those experiencing economic challenges, everyone s consistent donations of nonperishable foods for Pack the Pantry are essential. No dented cans or expired foods, please. The hope is that these cards will become more than something that you simply toss in the offering plate, but rather a way of making the offering a deeply personal and even spiritual experience, even as your financial gift comes to the church regularly, behind-the-scenes. You ll also find on the card an easy way for you to make an extra gift, should you feel moved to do so on any given Sunday. Your auto-giving information is already on file, so all you have to do is let us know your name and address and how to direct your extra gift. Many have expressed an interest in making an option like this possible. And now it is. If you are not an auto-giver, but would like to try it out, simply fill in the information on the regular offering envelope to get set up. It s that easy. Remember, with auto-giving you are always in charge. Should something change in your life income, job, etc. you can always change your autogiving dates and amounts (down OR up), simply by calling the church. Autogiving helps you become the giver you have always wanted to be. For more information contact: Patricia Patsy Bjorling, pbjorling@cathedralofhope.com or Ariel Duarte, ariel@cathedralofhope.com. The Freedom of Simplicity Most of the world s religious traditions advocate for a path of simplicity, recognizing a tradeoff between material preoccupation and spiritual enlightenment. Earnest seekers since ancient times have committed themselves to lives of voluntary poverty and service, knowing how easily wealth, pleasure, and security can become intoxicating and destructive substitutes for the free and open lives for which we were created. The parables of the Christian Gospel invite us into a life of abundance and vitality, where, like well-watered plants, our lives produce good. You were made for a life of flourishing. We are cared for. We have what we need and can use what we ve been given to be fruitful and life-giving. Jesus warned that life s worries, riches and pleasures can choke a plant, making it unfruitful (Luke 8:14). What crowds our lives and keeps us from flourishing? Where is true life being choked out by anxiety and stress, striving for success, or seeking happiness where it can t be found? These issues and more will be the subject of discussion at a free, four-week book study coming in October. Look for details in the SHIFT magazine. The book is titled: FREE: Spending Your Time and Money on What Matters Most, by Mark Scandrette. Copies of the book will be available in the Sources of Hope Gift Shop. The sixth medieval animal symbol of our 21st Century fables is the Prideful Horse. We ll talk about the difference in the genuine pride we feel for an accomplishment and the false pride we feel because we feel because we simply consider ourselves to be superior to other people. Pride comes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall. -Proverbs Contact Dan Peeler at dpeeler@cathedralofhope.com if you have any questions about the Children and Families Ministry. Throughout American history, there have always been women who have spoken out for what s right, even when they ve had to fight to be heard. In early 2017, Senator Elizabeth Warren s refusal to be silenced in the Senate inspired a spontaneous celebration of women who persevered in the face of adversity. Clinton celebrates thirteen American women who helped shape our country through their tenacity, sometimes through speaking out, sometimes by staying seated, sometimes by captivating an audience. They all certainly persisted. A wealthy, religiously observant young man asks Jesus what more he needs to do in order to inherit eternal life. He already obeys the Temple rules, gives alms, and so forth. He is probably expecting a pat on the head. Instead, Jesus tells him to sell all his possessions and give the money to the poor and then become a follower of Jesus. In a 2013 sermon, Pope Francis explained why Jesus expected so much of the materially comfortable man in this story: Whenever material things, money, worldliness, become the center of our lives, they take hold of us, they possess us; we lose our very identity as human beings. When we give away our possessions in support of the kingdom of God, we reorient ourselves to God as the center of our lives. God wants a living relationship with us. We are called to give because until we are free of our possessions hold over us, we cannot have the sort of relationship with God that God wants to have with us. If we are stressing over our stuff and our money how to keep it safe and accumulate more we simply cannot give God our full attention. Think what life could be like. The Promise House Sleep Out The Promise House Sleep Out A Night Under the Stars invites Dallas top business and community leaders to sleep outside to raise awareness and funds for homeless, runaway and at-risk youth. Participants pledge to raise a minimum of $5,000. Participants will spend the night in the Promise House parking lot learning about the issues that homeless youth face and what the community can do to help youth in crisis. Promise House provides sleeping bags, cardboard and beanies, but unlike those experiencing real homelessness, sleepers will have access to restrooms, on-site security, food and beverages. In conjunction with National Runaway Prevention Month, A Night Under the Stars aims to educate the community about youth experiencing homelessness, inspire change, and shine a light on youth homelessness! What a wonderful way to become involved with our commitment to work on ending LGBT youth homelessness! Register here: or contact Rusty Gage at rgage@dallashopecharities.org if you are interested. 14 CoH Hurricane Relief Efforts Today, we continue to lift in prayer all those who are being impacted by hurricanes Harvey and Irma (We are monitoring hurricanes Jose and Katia.) While we are still determining the extent of these disasters, there are ways in which you can help right now. First: Please check out the UCC Disaster Ministry page. There you will be able to donate to a relief fund, sign up to have your name added to a volunteer list, and find a list to make much needed Clean Up Buckets which can be shipped to families who will soon be cleaning up after these major floods. Second: Please consider volunteering at the various shelters housing hurricane evacuees. You can also assemble badly needed supplies which will be handed out at these shelters. The list is here. Third: Members of the Cathedral of Hope Transgender Council are serving as advocates for transgender people who are struggling to find housing at an established shelter. If you know of someone who is struggling to find a safe place to go, please refer them to the Cathedral of Hope front office, Finally, we give thanks to the many people in our community who have opened their homes to those seeking shelter. If you are seeking or offering a place to stay, please be in contact with Rev. Erin Wyma at ewyma@cathedralofhope.com. As we continue to understand the severity of these disasters, Cathedral of Hope will be working closely with the South Central Conference of the UCC to respond to the many needs that are sure to arise from this tragedy. In the meantime, please continue to keep our community in your prayers and stay tuned for more information about how you can help in the near future. Join the Bell Wall Society The Bell Wall Society is a group of individuals who have let the church know that they have made a commitment in their estate plans to benefit Cathedral of Hope. The commitment may be a simple bequest, a life insurance policy, an IRA or similar retirement savings vehicle, a gift annuity, or any other gift that will come to Cathedral of Hope after an individual s passing. The monies from these gifts will undergird Cathedral of Hope s future, especially by building the church s endowment and enabling capital projects. Cathedral of Hope celebrates these special gifts on a recognition plaque which will be located immediately inside the main doors of the church (installation is expected soon). Once a year the group will gather to welcome its newest members. The first of these gatherings will be on October 1. To learn more about estate planning, a free seminar is being offered at the Resource Center Community Center on October 16, 2017, 5:30 7 pm. It is being led by Kent C. Weimer, Sr. Charitable Advisor for Parkland Foundation. For more information, contact Patricia (Patsy) Bjorling, MDiv, pbjorling@cathedralofhope.com, or , x198. New Columbarium Niches Available Now Cathedral of Hope s recently installed round rose granite columbarium has 63 niches available for Cathedral of Hope members and individuals in the community. Situated in our lovely memorial garden, it provides a beautiful above ground resting place for you or your loved one. Each niche can hold two urns, 5 x 5 x 7. The average cost of a traditional burial in Texas is approximately $10,000, yet inurnment in a columbarium can cost as little as $1,000 for cremation, plus the price of your selected niche. Price of the top two rows of niches in the round columbarium is $4,200 each; niches in the bottom two rows are $3,600 each. Interest free financing is available over a 24-month period, with a $500 deposit. For more information, contact: Patricia Patsy Bjorling, pbjorling@cathedralofhope.com or , x198. 15 The Joy of Serving From Angela Turner as told to Bill Prickett Did you know that in the United States (the richest country in the world) there are 670,000 Americans who are homeless people? Additionally, there are 48 million people who go to bed hungry every night in this country. If a person makes $24,000 a year, it would only take the loss of 3 consecutive paychecks (without savings) for them to be TOTALLY HOMELESS. The BLESSING BAGS ministry is very PERSONAL for me. Let me explain why: As I am driving around on various streets and highways daily to go to work, I am reminded of my youngest son (30 years old) who is never far from my heart. He is frequently homeless. He is HIV positive, suffers from mental illness as well as substance abuse difficulties. A lot of labels, but the most important word of them all is SON. When I see homeless men and women, I instantly think, they are the sons and daughters, mothers and fathers of someone. They are REAL PEOPLE who have made mistakes and bad choices. They are marginalized, ill, and, definitely, down on their luck. They have a lot of stigmas attached to who they are just because they are homeless. I am reminded that Jesus took care of the sick (Matthew 9:35) and the homeless (Luke 10:25-37). It is my goal to serve in a similar way as Jesus. One of my favorite scriptures is Ephesians 2:8. I created the Blessing Bags ministry to give just like Jesus a gift from God. It is without expectations of anything in return. They are given with unconditional love because I know the pain and the struggle of a homeless person through the life and eyes of my son. In one of our family s darkest times, my son was homeless, without HIV medicine, and using drugs heavily. He asked me to bring him Sunday dinner. I did and he shared with me that although he knew that I hated what was going on in his life, he knew that I would ALWAYS feed him. I would always give him food, spiritual support, a place to bathe as well as wash his clothes. Blessing Bags are a constant reminder to me that the homeless are part of this village and we know it takes a village to care for them as well. The Blessing Bag ministry not only blesses the homeless, it also blesses those that participate in this ministry, because we get to share our unconditional love and extravagant grace. Blessings for all receivers and the givers. May God bless us all! Angela Turner has been attending CoH since August 2015 and has been a member since March If this story touches you, and you want to find a ministry in which to serve, contact Anita Haddy, Director of Ministry & Volunteer Development at ahaddy@cathedralofhope.com or X135. Advertise Your Business, Event or Service! Each week, we put the Cathedral Weekly Newsletter, CoH Worship Today, DIRECTLY into the hands of the hundreds of people who attend the Sunday 9 & 11 a.m. worship services.
