1 WORSHIP TODAY October 14, 2018 Volume 5 Issue & 11 a.m. Worship Services 7th 10th Sunday in after Ordinary Pentecost Time UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST INSIDE A Note from Neil Order of Worship All Saints Thanksgiving Baskets Ford Drive 4 UR Community

2 Welcome to Cathedral of Hope! What began in 1970 as a circle of 12 friends meeting weekly for worship and fellowship has grown into Cathedral of Hope, a Vibrant, Inclusive, Progressive (VIP) congregation of the United Church of Christ. Founded in and serving beyond the LGBTQ community, our mission is to reclaim Christianity as a faith of extravagant grace, radical inclusion, and relentless compassion by being a people of hope proclaiming God s inclusive love, removing barriers to faith and empowering all to grow in grace toward wholeness. If you are visiting Cathedral of Hope for the first time, we are glad to have you here, are blessed by your presence, and hope you will return often! If there is anything we can do to make your visit more enjoyable, please call on our Ushers to assist you. You re invited to use the restroom that corresponds with your gender identity or the restroom that is the safest and most comfortable for you. Gendered, multiple-occupancy restrooms are located near the double glass doors behind the Sanctuary. All-gender, single-occupancy restrooms are available off the hall to the right of the Hall of Heroes area. For more information about the church, please come to the Ministry & Visitor s Center located next to Sources of Hope. Our worship services are recorded for broadcast worldwide. We make every effort to respect your privacy; however, to ensure that you are not seen on screen, please sit in one of the last five rows of pews in the center section. Large-print bulletins and assisted listening systems are available in the bookstore. Neil s NOTE Good Morning, Cathedral of Hope United Church of Christ! Last Sunday I was in Los Angeles, celebrating 50 years of the inspirational leadership of my good friend and colleague, Reverend Dr. Troy D. Perry. As you might know, before becoming the Senior Pastor here I was Pastor at Founders MCC in Los Angeles, the church that Reverend Troy founded on October 6, MCC was a denomination, some would say the first movement of Christian churches founded on the belief that LGBTQ+ people were loved by God. Troy s inspirational leadership since October 1968 has given birth to hundreds of churches and communities of faith around the world that bear the name MCC and has inspired many mainline Protestant denominations to take a fresh look at the Holy Bible and, as a result, to become fully open and affirming of God s LGBTQ+ people. The denomination that Cathedral of Hope now resides in, the United Church of Christ, has not always been welcoming of all of us gathered here today. However, as we heard from our President and General Minister just a few weeks ago, the UCC owes a debt of gratitude to the faithful witness of Cathedral of Hope United Church of Christ we are a gift to our denomination. Our presence in the world is a vital witness to the Spirit of a Living God who moves and has embodiment in us, full and free, as the people of God. Our witness today, as a diverse people serving in a Vibrant, Inclusive and Progressive (VIP) church, is a testimony to God s love, and a living example to communities of faith that continue to struggle with what it looks like to be a fully-inclusive church. Let me say this to you and to the world CoH is a slice of heaven here on earth! You are the light of the world an inspirational light that shines outward and gives the world hope to believe in a God who, as we read, so loved the world that God sent Jesus into the world so that whoever believes in God shall have everlasting life. Today, in our sermon series, Generosity IS, we explore the belief that generosity is inspirational. Just as my friend Reverend Perry inspired a movement, our lives, in large and small ways, inspire those around us; through us, this church inspires others to reclaim their faith and belief in the God of love that we speak of every single week. I pray that God will foster a generous heart in each of us. Gracious God, show us the way. Sincerely, in Christ The Reverend Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas, Senior Pastor STAFF * Rev. Dr. Neil G. 3 ORDER of WORSHIP October 14, & 11 a.m. 7th Sunday in Ordinary Time Worship Note Below. WORSHIP NOTES WORSHIP NOTES Bring Forth Marty Haugen (b. 1950) based the lyrics for this contemporary hymn on Matthew 5: 13-15, the passage that immediately follows the Beatitudes in Jesus Sermon the Mount. The original first and second verses are paraphrases of the text, while the third and fourth are Haugen s reflections on the passage. Haugen wrote the tune BRING FORTH for his own words. The tune s name indicated the processional nature of the music. It was written at the Holden Village Retreat Center in Chelan, Washington, for use during outdoor worship. In consideration of those seated around you, PLEASE, No Flash Photography during the service. PLEASE, Silence Your Cell Phone! Thank you. 1

13 Mother Teresa s Wisdom about Sharing and Love At the end of life we will not be judged by how many diplomas we have received, how much money we have made, how many great things we have done. We will be judged by I was hungry and you gave me to eat, I was naked and you clothed me, I was homeless and you took me in. Hungry not only for bread but hungry for love. Naked not only for clothing but naked for human dignity and respect. Homeless not only for want of a room of bricks but homeless because of rejection. God loves you tenderly. What God gives you is not to be kept under lock and key, but to be shared. Let us ask God, when it comes time to ask God for something, to help us to be generous. For more information about giving, contact Patricia Patsy Bjorling. GENEROSITY In late August, Rev. Neil sent a letter inviting Cathedral of Hope members to participate in a 90-day tithing challenge. This was for both current tithers and for individuals who have never tried tithing before. His promise was to journey personally with each person throughout the 90 days, and to provide opportunities for those who sign up to get together, to pray, to study and to share stories, as the group explores the spiritual discipline of tithing. If you are willing take the 120-day tithing journey with Rev. Neil, beginning October 1, either print and complete the commitment form using the link you received in your , or stop by the table in the Fellowship Hall and complete a commitment card today. Forms and cards may be dropped in the offering plate or mailed, as well. Questions? Rev. Patsy Bjorling, Minister of Generosity Memorial Bricks Members and friends of Cathedral of Hope may now purchase personalized memorial bricks to be incorporated into the expanded Plaza area that is part of our New Entry for a New Era project. The bricks are 4 x 8 and can have up to three lines of text (20 characters per line). All bricks will be within about 100 feet of the church buildings, so all bricks will cost $160. Also available are 1-1/2 x 3 x 5/8 exact facsimiles of your bricks for an extra gift of $9.75. These mini-bricks can be used as paperweights, mementos, or given as gifts. Bricks may be dedicated to the memory or honor of someone you love or admire, in celebration of a milestone event, or for the greater glory of God. They may be purchased by individuals, families, or groups of friends. To purchase bricks, use the online form on Cathedral of Hope s website ( or pick up an order card at the table next to the Connect Center. You will upply the information about the name(s) to be engraved via a link that will be provided once you have paid for your bricks. If you have questions or need help with your brick purchase, contact Rev. Patricia (Patsy) Bjorling. Becoming the Giver You Have Always Wanted to Be Auto-Give Giving Made Easy Giving brings us to a place of great joy. However, for some of us, there can be potholes of anxiety along the way. From a human standpoint our wholehearted desires to give are sometimes frustrated and complicated by our fears of not having enough. Perhaps you ve made a pledge commitment either on paper or in your heart and then each Sunday as the offering plate comes around, your resolve to give gradually is battered by questions: Can I really afford to make the gift I intended to make? Will there be enough money at the end of the week? Should I give just part of what I was intending? With auto-giving you are always in charge. Should something change in your life income, job, etc. you can always change your auto-giving dates and amounts (down OR up), simply by calling the church. To sign up, fill in the requested Auto-Giving Program information on the offering envelope in the pew, and place the envelope in the Offering Plate. It s that easy. You may also contact: Rev. Patricia Patsy Bjorling, or Ariel Duarte, aduarte@cathedralofhope.com. QUESTIONS ABOUT GENEROSITY AND GIVING Contact Rev.
