2 Welcome to Cathedral of Hope! What began in 1970 as a circle of 12 friends meeting weekly for worship and fellowship has grown into Cathedral of Hope, a Vibrant, Inclusive, Progressive (VIP) congregation of the United Church of Christ. Founded in and serving beyond the LGBTQ community, our mission is to reclaim Christianity as a faith of extravagant grace, radical inclusion, and relentless compassion by being a people of hope proclaiming God s inclusive love, removing barriers to faith, and empowering all to grow in grace toward wholeness. If you are visiting Cathedral of Hope for the first time, we are glad to have you here, are blessed by your presence, and hope you will return often! If there is anything we can do to make your visit more enjoyable, please call on our Ushers to assist you. You re invited to use the restroom that corresponds with your gender identity or the restroom that is the safest and most comfortable for you. Gendered, multipleoccupancy restrooms are located near the double glass doors behind the Sanctuary. All-gender, single-occupancy restrooms are available off the hall to the right of the Hall of Heroes area. For more information about the church, please come to the Connect Center located next to Sources of Hope. Large-print bulletins and assisted listening systems are available in the bookstore. Good Morning, Cathedral of Hope United Church of Christ! We are All In here at Cathedral of Hope, and, as a part of our commitment to embodying our faith into our daily lives, we are reclaiming what it means to be a disciple of Christ. The early believers in Jesus were called disciples; in Christianity, a disciple is dedicated to following in the footsteps of Jesus. The term was first used scripturally in the New Testament, both in the Gospels and in the book of Acts. One of the roles of the church is discipleship or teaching, modeling and guiding us all to equip followers of Jesus through God s word, prayer, worship, encouragement, and service. In addition, discipleship is about relationships with others. Today we launch a new sermon series that will outline the discipleship path for those who want to live more fully into their experience of God. As Pastor, I want to equip us all to make our faith real and to embody it into our lives. I desire for us all that we take our faith seriously and have a transforming experience of the Divine. That is why we have developed the 4 Cs to help us navigate our individual discipleship path. Celebrate, Connect, Commit, and Claim. This is our short-hand version of what a discipleship path can look like; our new sermon series All In will address each of these components individually over the next several weeks. Today we focus on Celebrate. What does this mean? For us, to celebrate is to gather in community for worship. This is often the first step toward a more spiritual life, and we honor and value this step by providing sacred spaces to encounter the Divine. We offer several worship services, both on Sunday and during the week. These gatherings have, at their heart, the desire to help us celebrate what God has done, and is doing, in our lives, and, through us, in our world today. It is my honest desire to help us all celebrate in worship and leave this experience better than we arrived. I am not sure that God needs our worship, but I do believe that God enjoys our worship, both as a means of connecting us to God s purpose and as a recurring reminder to make that purpose a priority in our lives. While you might already attend public worship every week, I am hoping that you will find a way to make worship, together, a priority, even a habit, a way of consistently being aware of God and of raising values within us that are in line with God s commission to make this earth more like God s heaven. My sincere hope is that, through our celebration, our worship, we may discover a deeper connection with one another and find opportunities to make a difference in the world as agents of love. Blessings, Neil s NOTE The Reverend Dr. Neil G Cazares-Thomas Senior Pastor IMPORTANT Neil s NOTE INFO Connect Center If you are joining us for the first time, stop by the Info Bar in the Connect Center to meet and greet with volunteers and staff, and to pick up a special gift from us to you. **Temporary construction of the Children s Ministry area will mean a relocation for childcare, Children s Church and Youth Group on Sundays: Childcare Children are temporarily relocated to the East Wing with an entrance outside to the right of the entrance doors. Holy God, we praise your name; Sovereign God, we bow before you; All on earth your scepter claim, all the heavenly hosts adore you. Infinite your vast domain, everlasting is your reign. 2. Hark, the glad celestial hymn angel choirs around are raising; Cherubim and seraphim, in unceasing chorus praising, Fill the heavens with joys aflame: holy, holy is your name. 3. All apostles join the strain as your sacred name they hallow; Prophets swell the glad refrain, and the blessed martyrs follow; And from morn to set of sun, through the church the song goes on. 5 LITURGY OF THE WORD EPISTLE LESSON Hebrews 10: The Inclusive Bible, alt. Rev. Patsy Bjorling Therefore, siblings, since the sacrifice of Jesus makes us confident to enter the holy place by the new and living path opened for us through the veil that is to say, the body of Jesus and since we have the supreme high priest presiding over the house of God, let us enter it filled with faith and with sincerity in our hearts, our hearts sprinkled and cleared from any trace of bad conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us keep firm to the hope we profess, because the One who made the promise is faithful. Let us always think how we can stimulate each other to love and good works. Don t stay away from the meeting of the community, as some do, but encourage one another; and do this all the more as you see the Day drawing near. 6 **GOSPEL LESSON John 4: NRSV, alt. One: All: One: All: God be with you. And also with you. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John. Glory to you, O God. The woman answered, I see that you are a prophet. Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you say that the place where people must worship is in Jerusalem. Jesus told her, Believe me, the hour is coming when you will worship God neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. True worshipers will worship God in spirit and truth. Indeed, it is just such worshipers whom God seeks. God is spirit, and those who worship God must worship in spirit and truth. One: All: This is the Gospel of Hope. Praise to you, Creator, Christ, and Holy Spirit. **GLORIA Music by Tom Brooks & Don Moen Integrity s Hosanna! Music arr. Steven Couch; CCLI License # SERMON All In Rev. Dr. Neil G. Words and Music by John Chisum and Nancy Gordon, adapted by Steven Couch Threefold Amen Music/ Mother s Heart Music; CCLI License # DISTRIBUTION OF THE ELEMENTS TO OUR GUESTS Cathedral of Hope celebrates an open communion. We understand the sharing of the bread and the cup in Jesus name to be a representation of an ancient vision of God s feast for all peoples. We don t require you to be a member of this church, or any church, to participate with us in this feast of grace. Simply come forward at the ushers direction. After dipping a wafer in the cup, which contains non-alcoholic grape juice, the minister will place it on your tongue and offer a brief blessing. If you prefer to serve yourself, cup your hands in front of you as you come to receive communion. Gluten-free Wafers are available from the silver intinction set at the center point. Please indicate your need to the ushers on the center aisle and they will direct you to the appropriate position. We ask that you serve yourself take a wafer and dip it in the juice in order to avoid cross-contamination by the server. During the serving of Holy Communion, feel free to join in our Music during Communion. Please also be mindful of those around you who are in prayer and meditation. MUSIC DURING COMMUNION I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light I want to walk as a child of the light; I want to follow Jesus. 10 WORSHIP NOTES This is a series of articles prepared by the Music and Worship Team to give insight and background into musical elements of our services. HOLY GOD, WE PRAISE YOUR NAME Holy God, We Praise Thy Name is an ecumenical church song by the German Catholic priest Ignaz Franz. Written in 1771, it is a paraphrase of the Te Deum, a Christian hymn in Latin from the 4th century. The original German language song Großer Gott, wir loben dich is an inherent part of Christian ceremonial occasions and often sung during the thanksgiving service in the liturgy, mainly as a conclusion song. Due to its memorable melody and theme it is one of the most popular church songs and especially prevalent in the German-speaking community. As a result of the German emigration in the 19th century, the song became known in the United States and was translated to English by Clarence A. Walworth in The arrangement we use today is by composer and organist John Ferguson, professor of organ and church music at St. Olaf College, Northfield, MN. He incorporates the older Te Deum chant with the 18th century hymn in a beautiful marriage. PRAISE BE TO GOD, THE ALMIGHTY This great hymn by Joachim Neander, based essentially on Psalm 103: 1-6 and Psalm 150, was first published in As the soul s ardent praise to God, it is one of the most beloved such hymns in German and English-speaking countries alike. Personal in nature throughout, it is appropriate for festive occasions in the life of individual Christians as well as for celebrations in the life of the Church. The translation upon which the version we sing today is based on that published by Catherine Winkworth in her Chorale Book for England, The hymn tune LOBE DEN HERREN, first published in 1665, exists in many versions and is probably based on a folk melody. LET ALL THINGS NOW LIVING Katherine Kennicott Davis ( ) originally wrote these lyrics in 1939 to be used as the text for an anthem. The hymn is most popular during the Thanksgiving season. Like many hymns on creation, the second verse reflects on the natural created order, stars, sun, hills and mountains, the rivers and fountains. All creation joins with humanity to raise a song of glad adoration to God. Much of the popularity of this hymn comes from its pairing with the buoyant Welsh folk tune, THE ASH GROVE. The roots of this melody may be found in the eighteenth century. Katherine Davis is best known for her popular Christmas song, The Little Drummer Boy (1941), originally known as the Carol of the Drum. Bowling is Back in 2019 Friday, March 1 Bowlero Euless Tickets on Sale February 3 Pastrix The Cranky, Beautiful Faith of a Sinner & Saint (Nadia Bolz-Weber will talk about and sign her latest book Shameless on Monday, February 18 at 7:00 pm here at Cathedral of Hope.) Author Bolz-Weber takes no prisoners as she reclaims the term pastrix (pronounced pas-triks, a term used by some Christians who refuse to recognize female pastors) in her messy, beautiful, prayer-and-profanity laden narrative about an unconventional life of faith. Heavily tattooed and loud-mouthed, Nadia, a former stand-up comic, didn t consider herself to be religious leader material until the day she ended up leading a friend s funeral in a smoky downtown comedy club. Using life stories from living in a hopeful-but-haggard commune of slackers to surviving the wobbly chairs and war stories of a group for recovering alcoholics, Bolz-Weber uses stunning narrative and poignant honesty to portray a woman who is both deeply faithful and deeply flawed. Wildly entertaining and deeply resonant, this is the book for people who hunger for a bit of hope that doesn t come from vapid consumerism or navel-gazing; for women who talk too loudly, and guys who love chick flicks; for the gay man who loves Jesus and won t allow himself to be shunned by the church. In short, this book is for every thinking misfit suspicious of institutionalized religion, but who is still seeking transcendence and mystery. Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas Sunday Worship 9 & 11 a.m. (English), 1 p.m. (Spanish) James Arthur Jimmy Baldwin was an American writer and social critic. Baldwin s novels and plays fictionalize fundamental personal questions and dilemmas amid complex social and psychological pressures which thwart the equality of African Americans and gay and bisexual men. Such dynamics are prominent in Baldwin s second novel, Giovanni s Room, written in 1956, well before the gay liberation movement By the spring of 1963, Baldwin had become so much a spokesman for the Civil Rights Movement that for its May 17 issue on the turmoil in Birmingham, Alabama, Time magazine put the author on the cover. There is not another writer, said Time, who expresses with such poignancy and abrasiveness the dark realities of the racial ferment in North and South.
