2 WELCOME to Worship! What began in 1970 as a circle of 12 friends meeting weekly for worship and fellowship has grown into Cathedral of Hope, a Vibrant, Inclusive, Progressive (VIP) congregation of the United Church of Christ. Founded in and serving beyond the LGBTQ community, Cathedral of Hope s mission is to reclaim Christianity as a faith of extravagant grace, radical inclusion and relentless compassion. Your presence here is a blessing to us, and we hope you will return often. The VISION of Cathedral of Hope is to be a community of hope proclaiming God s inclusive love, removing barriers to faith and empowering all people to grow in grace toward wholeness. Notes for Newcomers Restrooms are located near the double glass doors behind the Sanctuary. Private rest rooms are available off the hall to the right of the Hall of Heroes area. For more information about the church, please come to the Ministry & Visitor s Center located next to Sources of Hope bookstore. Our worship services are recorded for broadcast around the world. We make every effort to respect your privacy. However, if you would like to ensure that you are not seen on screen, please sit in one of the last five rows of pews in the center section. Large-print bulletins and assisted listening systems are available in the bookstore. In consideration of those seated around you, PLEASE, No Flash Photography during the service. PLEASE, Silence Your Cell Phone! Thank you. Good Morning, Cathedral of Hope United Church of Christ! November is a season of Remembering for us as we prepare for the end of the year, which includes Advent and Christmas. Today, we begin our season by remembering our cloud of witnesses. The writer to the early Hebrew people reminded them that they are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses (Heb. 12:1). These are meant to be words of encouragement, helping the intended reader to pursue their passion for Christ in the face of adversity. We are encouraged to hear these words anew today, through our own lens, in appreciation for the many who have carried the torch for us in preparation for our time of taking up the baton and carrying it onward. We give thanks today for the many lives that have touched both us and Cathedral of Hope; during our service today we will honor them and remember them. They are our cloud of witnesses that encourage us today to run with perseverance the race that is before us. This race is both a personal one and one which is lived out in community. One group of people that have enabled the Cathedral to continue its vital work throughout the years are those who have been a part of the Legacy Fund. This fund has grown mostly through gifts by those who have passed over and left a part, or all, of their estates to the church. Over the past year, we have been intentional in our efforts to build a Legacy Fund which, we hope, will one day pay off the indebtedness of the Cathedral and enable us to burn our mortgage. This would relieve the expenses of debt and allow us to redirect funds to vital ministries and outreach. As a part of our service today, we will honor those who have come together to once again build our Legacy Fund (see article on p. 8). We will also invite others to think about remembering Cathedral of Hope when it is their time to join the great cloud of witnesses who cheer us on in this life, keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith. Last week, we collectively made our pledges of time, talent and treasure as we closed out our Faithfully season. If you were not present, or were otherwise unable to make your pledge last Sunday, please feel free to make it today, or before the end of the year. May God bless each and every one of us as we gather in this sacred space today to honor our past, our present and our future. Sincerely, in Christ The Reverend Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas, Senior Pastor HOPEQuotes Love being able to watch the service when I can t make it over due to home church obligations... my joy runneth over when Pastor Neil extends his welcome. 5 LITURGY OF THE WORD EPISTLE LESSON Ephesians 1: Rev. Dr. Michael Diaz In Christ we have also obtained an inheritance, having been destined according to the purpose of God and everything is accomplished according to the divine will and counsel we, who were the first to set our hope on Christ, might live for the praise of God s glory. In Christ you also, when you had heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in it, were marked with the seal of the promised Holy Spirit; this is the pledge of our inheritance toward redemption as God s own people, to the praise of God s glory. I have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and your love toward all the saints, and for this reason I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers. I pray that God will enlighten the eyes of your mind so that you can see the hope this call holds for you the promised glories that God s holy ones will inherit, and the infinitely great power that is exercised for us who believe. ANTHEM Psalm 84: Cantique de Jean Racine Words: Psalm 84; Music by Gabriel Fauré Sanctuary Choir Becky Scherschell, harp; Sean Hudgins, horn Strings of the Orchestra O Lord of Hosts, how lovely are thy dwellings. My soul longs for thy courts, O Lord. O Lord, for thee my heart and flesh cry out. O blest are they whose hope is forever in Thee; Who praise thy name, who sing their songs within thy holy house. O Lord, incline thine ear; Look down, my spirit longs for thee. A sun and shield is the Lord of Hosts. PASTORAL PRAYER (9 A.M.) RECOGNITION AND BLESSING OF LEGACY FUND DONORS (11 A.M.) 6 **GOSPEL LESSON Luke 6: God be with you. And also with you. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke. Glory to you, O God. Then Jesus looked up and said: Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the realm of God. Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you because of the Chosen One. Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven; for that is what their ancestors did to the prophets. This is the Gospel of Hope. Praise to you, Creator, Christ and Holy Spirit. **GLORIA Music by Richard Hillert Concordia Publishing House arr. Steven Couch; OneLicense.net License #A SERMON Remembering Our Saints Rev. Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas Shall We Gather at the River (on page 1) Shall We Gather at the River or simply At the River are the popular names for the traditional Christian hymn titled HANSON PLACE, written by American poet and gospel music composer Robert Lowry ( ). It was written in 1864 and is now in the public domain. The hymn tune HANSON PLACE is a reference to the original Hanson Place Baptist Church in Brooklyn, where Lowry, as a Baptist minister, sometimes served. The song s lyrics refer to the Christian concept of the anticipation of restoration and reward, and reference the motifs found in Revelation 22:1-2: a crystal clear river with water of life, issuing from the throne of heaven, all presented by an angel of God. The Cathedral of Hope Orchestra s beautiful Prelude this morning is a setting by American composer Dan Goeller, and incorporates phrases of the spiritual Deep River. 4

7 LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST PRESENTATION OF OUR TITHES AND OFFERINGS OFFERTORY Borrowed Angels Words and Music by Diane Warren Jason Huff, soloist Sanctuary Choir and Orchestra Pat Saxon GREAT THANKSGIVING FOR ALL SAINTS SUNDAY SURSUM CORDA SANCTUS God be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to God. Let us give thanks to God. It is right to give God thanks and praise. TO OUR GUESTS Cathedral of Hope celebrates an open communion. We understand the sharing of the bread and the cup in Jesus name to be a representation of an ancient vision of God s feast for all peoples. We don t require you to be a member of this church, or any church, to participate with us in this feast of grace. Simply come forward at the ushers direction. After dipping a wafer in the cup, the minister will place it on your tongue and offer a brief blessing. If you prefer to serve yourself, cup your hands in front of you as you come to receive communion. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, God of the ages, Creator of heaven and earth, God of Abraham and Sarah, God of Miriam and Moses, God of Joshua and Deborah, God of Ruth and David, God of the priests and the prophets, God of Mary and Joseph, God of the apostles and the martyrs, God of our mothers and our fathers, God of our children to all generations. And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn. WORDS OF INSTITUTION Words by Reginald Heber; Music by John B. Dykes PRAYER OF CONSECRATION REMEMBRANCE OF THE SAINTS INVITATION TO THE FEAST DISTRIBUTION OF THE ELEMENTS Gluten-free Wafers are available from the silver intinction set at the center point. Please indicate your need to the ushers on the center aisle and they will direct you to the appropriate position. We ask that you serve yourself take a wafer and dip it in the juice in order to avoid cross-contamination by the server. For All the Saints (on page 2) Our Processional Hymn this All Saints Sunday is the noble For All the Saints. The lyrics were written by the Anglican Bishop of Wakefield, William Walsham How, and first published in the 1864 collection, Hymns for Saint s Days, and Other Hymns, by Earl Nelson. It was originally sung to the Joseph Barnby tune Sarum, but is today usually sung to the tune Sine Nomine (literally Latin for without name in reference to its use on the Feast of All Saints) by British composer Ralph Vaughan Williams ( ). It has been described as one of the finest hymn tunes of the twentieth century. While most English hymns of this time were written to be sung in harmony, Sine Nomine is primarily sung in unison to an organ accompaniment which features a powerful moving bassline. Vaughan Williams wrote an additional four-part harmony for use on the interior verses. Today we sing seven of the hymn s original eleven stanzas. 5

10 News BRIEFS November 6, 2016 About All Saints Day All Saints Day, also known as All Hallows, Day of All the Saints, Solemnity of All Saints, or Feast of All Saints is a solemnity celebrated on November 1 by the Roman Catholic Church and various Protestant denominations, and on the first Sunday after Pentecost in Eastern Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy. The Feast Day honors all saints, known and unknown. In Roman Catholic theology, the day commemorates all those who have attained the beatific vision in heaven. It is a national holiday in many historically Catholic countries. In the Catholic Church and many Anglican churches, the following day, November 2, specifically commemorates the departed faithful who have not yet been purified and reached heaven. Christians who celebrate All Saints Day and All Souls Day do so in the fundamental belief that there is a prayerful spiritual bond between those in heaven and the living. Other Christian traditions define, remember and respond to the saints in different ways. In the United Methodist Church the word saints refers to all Christians and therefore, on All Saints Day, the Church Universal, as well as the deceased members of a local congregation, are honored and remembered. Music for Hope Presents Bobby Jo Valentine in Concert NEXT Sunday, November 13, 6:30 PM, IPC Cathedral of Hope is thrilled to welcome back singer and artist Bobby Jo Valentine. Bobby was a huge hit last year when he performed for CoH, and we are extremely excited to welcome him back. Hope-folk. Soul-pop. Poetic rock. Bobby Jo Valentine s music exists outside the lines of any genre, but the music s thoughtful lyrics and catchy melodies reach listeners on all paths of life. The authentic, universal, uncanny nature of his songs have won him Songwriter of the Year at West Coast Songwriter s Association twice in 2011 and He s sold 16,000 albums and performed more than 500 concerts all without a record label and all because of devoted groups of fans and friends who grow in number after every concert. 11 Today in Children s Church In this week s family take-home discussion guide, we ll be talking about Remembering, as we look at the celebrations of All Saint s Day and Dia de los Muertos. Last Sunday during our Children s Church times, we enjoyed a very successful Halloween costume party time and discussed what All Hallow s Eve is really about the evening before the Day of All Hallowed Ones or Saints. We will watch an illustrated PowerPoint presentation that tells us the origins and meanings of those traditions as well as the unique ways the people of Mexico and their descendants, with much joy and colorful art centered celebrations, remember those who have gone before them. Why We Use Incense in our Liturgy Ancient practice to be used TODAY at 11 a.m. At certain services during the liturgical year, Cathedral of Hope uses incense during worship. Some, whose church background did not include this practice, have asked why we do this. We believe that worship should be experiential. We are most fully engaged when the senses of sight, sound, smell, taste and touch are stirred. Incense is one way in which the Church throughout history has done that. Moreover, the use of incense is a thoroughly Biblical concept. We see it commanded of the Jews (Exodus 25:29) and then used in worship in Israel from that point on. Notice the prophecy of Malachi 1:11, From the rising of the sun to its setting my name is great among the nations, and in every place incense is offered to my name. God actually anticipates the use of incense by all people in God s name. In the New Testament, we see Zechariah offering incense in the sanctuary when the angel of the Lord appears to him (Luke 1:8-11). Later, in Revelation, we see the elders holding golden bowls of incense, which are the prayers of the saints (Revelation 5:8). Incense is the symbol of our prayers rising up to the Lord. It is also symbolic of spiritual cleansing and has been used in Christian worship since ancient times. So, as you smell the incense in our services, remember the history and symbolism behind it, and try to let it enhance your experience of worship! 9 MONDAY Stonewall Narcotics Anonymous Group Noon, CLC 116 & 7:30 p.m., CLC 107 TUESDAY Stonewall Narcotics Anonymous Group Noon, CLC 116 & 7:30 p.m., CLC 107 Gaymsters Bridge Group 6:30 p.m., CLC WEDNESDAY Stonewall Narcotics Anonymous Group Noon, CLC 116 Child Care 7 p.m., CLC 135 PULSE Contemporary Worship 7:15 p.m., Sanctuary HIV Testing Must call for appointment. Advent Book Study: All Creation Waits: The Advent Mystery of New Beginnings 6:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesdays, November 29 December 20 in CLC 107 Gail Boss s lyrical prose and keen eye for the natural world immediately capture the reader in the thoughtful meditations in her new book: All Creation Waits: An Advent Mystery of New Beginnings. Paired with original woodcuts by David Klein, these resonant portraits explore how wild animals adapt when darkness and cold descend in winter. Reading, we hear as if for the first time the ancient wisdom of Advent: The dark is not an end but the way to a new beginning. (Pubisher s notes). In his appreciative appraisal of the book, Fr. Richard Rohr asserts: Each of the beautiful creatures is a unique word of God, its own metaphor, all of them together drawing us to the One we all belong to. Adapting to the dark and cold, they announce in different ways the Good News of Advent, that through every dark door, the creating Love of the universe waits. This beautiful video provides an introduction to the book: In a season when it is easy to get swept up in the mad rush of commercialism, come center yourself by journeying with others, considering our own adaptive strategies when darkness falls, and what these wondrous creatures may teach us. Together with prayer, scripture, poetry, reflection, and spiritual companionship we will anticipate the coming of our light, Emmanuel. Books will be available soon in the bookstore or you can purchase books online. Questions? Contact Rev. Erin Wyma at ewyma@cathedralofhope.com. Dr. Pat Saxon will be facilitating this class. ($14 - $96) A Year of Gratitude After a difficult 2007, John Kralik decided to start 2008 with a serious New Year s resolution: to be thankful for the good things and people in his life. He spent the next year writing one thank you note for each day to family, friends, coworkers, even the barista at his local Starbucks. Karlik says, Though it might be tempting to fire off a quick thank you , true expressions of gratitude should be written the old school way with pen and paper. Things we write in cyberspace are so easily deleted and forgotten... buried by the next 30 s we receive. In this day and age, a handwritten note is something that people really feel is special. Kralik says he is often moved by how many people have saved his notes: It s up on their wall, he says. It s like part of you that s there. (Your A Year of Gratitude collection includes 52 thank you cards w/envelopes, a guided journal to chronicle your year of gratitude, and tips on how to write a good thank you note.) We all know that as a verb, walk means to travel on foot from one place to another, moving at a regular and fairly slow pace by lifting and setting down each foot in turn, never having both feet off the ground at once. One only recognizes the archaic noun of walk when it is used to describe the way in which someone lives their life or behaves. The Walk ministry here at Cathedral of Hope is committed to providing an opportunity for anyone who seeks to embark on strengthening their personal faith journey by attending a 3-day spiritual renewal retreat. This retreat is similar to other retreats such as Cursillo, Walk to Emmaus or Chrysalis. The Walk follows the mission of Cathedral of Hope and has a vibrant, progressive, and inclusive foundation. The Walk is also intended to strengthen Cathedral of Hope through the development of Christian disciples and leaders, yet, anyone who desires to grow in their faith and be active in their church/faith community is invited to attend the weekend. This experience is a 72-hour short course in GRACE comprised of talks and activities led by a team of lay persons and pastors who have already attended a 3-Day retreat. The Walk retreat participants have opportunities to engage in both personal and communal spiritual growth as the weekend unfolds. This wonderful weekend is a Christ-centered retreat with experiences of prayer, meditation, worship and communion, and it s always a lot of fun. The Walk retreats happen once a year, and the upcoming Walk #3 retreat will be January 5-8, 2017 at Camp Crucis in Granbury, TX. The Walk will begin on Thursday afternoon and conclude in the afternoon on Sunday. The retreat is open to all genders, but is limited to 24 attendees. There will be a Walk table in the Narthex to sign up for The Walk. For further information, or if you have questions about the retreat, please contact Zanté García via The Walk Leadership Team at thewalk@cathedralofhope.com. 12 Giving and Attendance at a Glance Week Week Week Ending 10/30/16 Ending 10/23/16 Ending 10/16/16 Service Attd.
