Good Morning, Cathedral of Hope United Church of Christ! Today is Transfiguration Sunday. What is that, you might ask! Well, it is the Sunday before Lent begins, when we once again see a glimpse of Jesus connection to the prophets of old as a means of letting us in on who Jesus was, and is. The scriptures tell of a time when Jesus climbed up a mountain to pray and took Peter, James, and John along for the journey. While they were there, Jesus s face began to glow and he was witnessed talking to two others, who had not climbed the mountain with them. It turns out that the two Jesus was talking to were Moses and Elijah, both of whom had been dead for a very long time but two of the great leaders and prophets who God had sent, before Jesus. In this exchange, we are told that a voice from heaven, just like the voice that came at Jesus s baptism, spoke out and proclaimed Jesus as God s child, God s own, adding these words, Listen to Him. Peter, James, and John are in awe at this moment and want to stay up on the mountain, but Jesus reminds them that they must ultimately return to their ordinary lives, and carry out something more, something bigger than even this moment of ecstasy and awe gave to them. These events convicted those early disciples of the importance of Jesus and, I am sure, in the bleak times that lay ahead, they would look back to this moment, using it to inspire them onward. We all need moments like this in our lives, moments that are inexplicable, but which remind us why this faith that we share is important and worth pushing onward with. I know that, in my life, there are moments that I return to, time after time, as defining moments of inspiration and awe. These moments convince me that God is still God and that I, like you, must be open to a faith that calls us to believe even when circumstances might tempt us otherwise. On Wednesday of this coming week we will come together to begin our Lenten journey. It begins when we receive the sign of the cross, in ashes, on our foreheads, and hear these words, From dust you came and to dust you shall return. These words are taken from the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament), first in the book of Genesis in and echoed by David in the book of Psalms. They also appear in the book of Ecclesiastes and the book of Job. They are a reminder that we came from a God who created us, forms us, and yearns to have deep and meaningful relationship with us. Just like Moses and Elijah, who appeared with Jesus on that mountaintop, and just like Peter, James, and John, who encountered God in the transfigured Christ, we are transformed as we remember the personal moments with Jesus that sustain us when we return from a mountaintop experience to everyday living. Throughout Lent we will be invited to Open the Door, looking into Lent as doors open to the way of life itself. Blessings, Neil s NOTE The Reverend Dr. Neil G. 4 LITURGY OF THE WORD EPISTLE LESSON 2 Corinthians 3: 12 4: 2 NRSV, alt. Since, then, we have such a hope, we act with great boldness, not like Moses, who put a veil over his face to keep the people of Israel from gazing at the end of the glory that was being set aside. But their minds were hardened. Indeed, to this very day, when they hear the reading of the old covenant, that same veil is still there, since only in Christ is it set aside. Indeed, to this very day whenever Moses is read, a veil lies over their minds; but when one turns to God, the veil is removed. Our God is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of God is, there is freedom. And all of us, with unveiled faces, seeing the glory of God as though reflected in a mirror, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another; for this comes from the Spirit. Therefore, since it is by God's mercy that we are engaged in this ministry, we do not lose heart. We have renounced the shameful things that one hides; we refuse to practice cunning or to falsify God's word; but by the open statement of the truth we commend ourselves to the conscience of everyone in the sight of God. ANTHEM Fairest Jesu arr. Benjamin Harlan Sanctuary Choir and Orchestra PASTORAL PRAYER GRADUAL Choir: All: Speak, O Lord, as we come to you to receive the food of your holy word. 5 **GOSPEL LESSON Luke 9: NRSV, alt. One: All: One: All: God be with you. And also with you. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke. Glory to you, O God. Now about eight days after these sayings Jesus took with him Peter and John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray. While Jesus was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became dazzling white. Suddenly they saw two people, Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus. They appeared in glory and were speaking of the prophecy that Jesus was about to fulfill at Jerusalem. Now Peter and the others were weighed down with sleep; but since they had stayed awake, they saw Jesus glory and the two who stood with him. Just as they were leaving, Peter said to Jesus, Teacher, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah not knowing what he was saying. While Peter was speaking, a cloud came and overshadowed them; and they were terrified as they entered the cloud. Then from the cloud came a voice that said, This is my Own, my Chosen One; listen to him! When the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent and in those days told no one any of the things they had seen. One: All: This is the Gospel of Hope. Praise to you, Creator, Christ, and Holy Spirit. **GLORIA Music by Tom Brooks & Don Moen Integrity s Hosanna! Music arr. Steven Couch; CCLI License # SERMON A Prayer for Openness Rev. Dr. Neil G. 9 WORSHIP NOTES This is a series of articles prepared by the Music and Worship Team to give insight and background into musical elements of our services. We Have Come at Christ s Own Bidding We Have Come at Christ s Own Bidding was commissioned by the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration in Dallas, Texas, in The late Howard E. Buddy Ross ( ), commissioned the text as part of a series of Transfiguration-themed works. Ross was then serving as the parish s music director. This text by the Rev. Carl P. Daw Jr. (b. 1944) also appears in its poetic form in the Epiphany portion of his hymn collection, A Year of Grace (1990, Hope Publishing Company). Dr. Daw is the son of a Baptist preacher and was born in Louisville, Ky. An Episcopal priest, he was educated at Rice University, the University of Virginia and the University of the South. He recently retired as executive director of the Hymn Society in the United States and Canada. He is now curator of hymnological collections and adjunct professor of hymnology at UM-affiliated Boston University School of Theology. Today we sing Daw s lyrics to the popular Welsh hymntune HYFRYDOL. Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence (Greek: Σιγησάτω πᾶσα σάρξ βροτεία) is an ancient chant of Eucharistic devotion based on words from Habakkuk 2:20, Let all the earth keep silence before God. The original was composed in Greek as a Cherubic Hymn for the Offertory of the Divine Liturgy of St James; it probably antedates the rest of the liturgy and goes back at least to 275 AD, with local churches adopting arrangements in Syriac. In modern times, the Ralph Vaughan Williams arrangement of a translation from the Greek by Gerard Moultrie to the tune of Picardy, a French medieval folk melody, popularized the hymn among other Christian congregations. Our Anthem this morning is a powerful setting of this ancient text by Texas composer Joseph M. Martin. We join with Peter, James, and John in standing with fear and trembling before the transfigured Christ. Swiftly Pass the Clouds of Glory This hymn text for Transfiguration Sunday, is by Presbyterian minister, flutist, poet and hymn writer Thomas H. Troeger (b. 1945). The lyrics take us with Peter, James and John down the mountain from the Transfiguration to the plain and valley, to Jerusalem and the cross. The anonymous American folk tune is named NETTLETON because it was attributed to Asahel Nettleton, a nineteenth-century evangelist. He is no longer believed to be the composer. John Wyeth s ( ) Repository of Sacred Music, published in 1813, is the first printed source of this tune. Ash Wednesday is March 6 Why we use ashes as part of our liturgy Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, is observed on the Wednesday of the seventh week before Easter. The day is named for the practice of imposing ashes, an ancient practice and sign of repentance that is mentioned several times in the Bible, including Jonah 3: 5-9, Job 42: 6, Jeremiah 6: 26 and Matthew 11: 21. Early Christians adopted the use of ashes from Jewish practice as an external mark of penitence. Many modern congregations find this to be a meaningful part of the Ash Wednesday liturgy. The imposition of ashes You will have multiple opportunities to receive ashes this Ash Wednesday. The Interfaith Peace Chapel will be open from 12:00 p.m. - 1 p.m. for personal meditation with English and Spanish speaking clergy available for the imposition of ashes. Ashes will also be a part of Ashes on the Strip (Cedar Springs & Throckmorton) 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. and at the bilingual service at 7:15 p.m. in the church Sanctuary. Ashes are applied with the minister s thumb in the form of a small cross on the forehead of each person with the words, Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return. You are also invited to walk the labyrinth in the IPC Sanctuary throughout the day. Why We Use Incense in Our Liturgy Ancient practice to be used on Ash Wednesday, March 6, at 7:15 p.m. At certain services during the liturgical year, Cathedral of Hope uses incense during worship. Some, whose church background did not include this practice, have asked why we do this. We believe that worship should be experiential. We are most fully engaged when the senses of sight, sound, smell, taste and touch are stirred. Incense is one way in which the Church throughout history has done that. In the New Testament, we see Zechariah offering incense in the sanctuary when the angel of the Lord appears to him (Luke 1:8-11). Later, in Revelation, we see the elders holding golden bowls of incense, which are the prayers of the saints (Revelation 5:8). Incense is the symbol of our prayers rising up to the Lord. It is also symbolic of spiritual cleansing and has been used in Christian worship since ancient times. So, as you smell the incense in our services, remember the history and symbolism behind it, and try to let it enhance your experience of worship! 7

Recording multiple albums and singing in America s largest megachurches, her music was used weekly around the globe and translated into numerous languages. But she lived with a debilitating inner battle: she was gay. The traditional Christians she sang in front of were unanimous in their view they staunchly opposed same-sex relationships and saw homosexuality as a grievous sin. Faced with a major health crisis, at the age of thirtyfive she decided to tell the world that she was gay. She lost her music career, faced vitriol from traditionalists, and had to rebuild her life almost from scratch. Despite losing so much, she gained far more: she was finally able to live from a place of wholeness, vulnerability, and authenticity. And she became a champion for others, fighting for LGBT equality in the church and in the corporate sector. Her courageous work is creating change in the US and the UK, as she urges people to celebrate diversity, live authentically, and become undivided.
