ELW refers to the Evangelical Lutheran Worship, the red worship book. Page numbers are in the front of the book with hymn numbers following in the middle & end. During worship, please silence all communication devices. *As you are able, please stand. Gathering Gathering and Fellowship Welcome and Theme of the Day Hope Advent is about the coming days. God s people have always lived in great expectation, but that expectation finds specific, repeated enunciation in the texts appointed for these four weeks. The ancients anticipated a righteous Branch to spring up for David. The Thessalonians awaited the coming of our Lord Jesus with all the saints. Our Lord s contemporaries hoped for the time to stand before the Son of Man. With them we eagerly await the coming days: another Christmas celebration, a second coming, and the advent of our Lord in word and supper. *Advent Gathering At every beginning there is a yearning for the one who is coming. O Emmanuel, Wake us up to your coming. We gather together to expect the unexpected and imagine the unimaginable. O Emmanuel, Wake us up to your coming. Make room for the advent of God! Make room for unforgettable transformation! Make room to see the world turned upside-down Valleys will touch the sky Mountains will be flattened. And we will all see it together! Let s make room for something new. Jesus, we welcome your presence now with the lighting of this candle, whose flame brings warmth to winter and fills this place with the glow of hope. Light the first Candle of Hope 3

*Advent Song Light One Candle ELW Hymn 240 The assembly sings Verse 1 only *Prayer of the Day Let us pray together. God, we are ready for hope. We long for the light of hope to shine in our lives. Yet as we rush through our days, we fail to see the hope-filled gifts you ve given us. Help us slow down. Enter our hearts with a gentle reminder of the hope you bring. Open our eyes to the many blessings we ve received so that we turn toward others and share your gifts of hope. Amen. Word First Reading A Reading from Jeremiah 33:14-16 in The Message Bible. In the Old Testament, righteousness often has to do with being faithful in relationship. God acts righteously both in punishing Israel for its sin and in having mercy. In today s reading, Jerusalem s future name The Lord is our righteousness proclaims that the Lord is even now working salvation for Israel. 4

Watch for this: The time is coming GOD s Decree when I will keep the promise I made to the families of Israel and Judah. When that time comes, I will make a fresh and true shoot sprout from the David-Tree. He will run this country honestly and fairly. He will set things right. That s when Judah will be secure and Jerusalem live in safety. The motto for the city will be, GOD Has Set Things Right for Us. Word of God, Word of Hope. Thanks be to God! Word for God s Children Children age 3 7 are invited to the All Saints Room. They will return after the Sermon. We encourage at least one parent to be present. *Gospel Song O Come, O Come, Emmanuel Veni Emmanuel O come, O come, Emmanuel and bless each place your people dwell. God heal the wounds caused by war. Bring peace upon the earth forevermore. Refrain Rejoice, rejoice! Take heart and do not fear, God's chosen one, Emmanuel, draws near. The Rev. Barbara Lundblad *Gospel The good news from Luke 21:25-36 in The Message Bible. Open Our Hearts, Lord God will fulfill God s purposes and, already, hidden signs of that fulfillment abound. On that great day there will be dismay, perplexity, confusion, and terror, but God s people shall be given strength to stand boldly and receive God s promised redemption. It will seem like all hell has broken loose sun, moon, stars, earth, sea, in an uproar and everyone all over the world in a panic, the wind knocked out of them by the threat of doom, the powers-that-be quaking. And then then! they ll see the Son of Man welcomed in grand style a glorious welcome! When all this starts to happen, up on your feet. Stand tall with your heads high. Help is on the way! 5

He told them a story. Look at a fig tree. Any tree for that matter. When the leaves begin to show, one look tells you that summer is right around the corner. The same here when you see these things happen, you know God s kingdom is about here. Don t brush this off: I m not just saying this for some future generation, but for this one, too these things will happen. Sky and earth will wear out; my words won t wear out. But be on your guard. Don t let the sharp edge of your expectation get dulled by parties and drinking and shopping. Otherwise, that Day is going to take you by complete surprise, spring on you suddenly like a trap, for it s going to come on everyone, everywhere, at once. So, whatever you do, don t go to sleep at the switch. Pray constantly that you will have the strength and wits to make it through everything that s coming and end up on your feet before the Son of Man. This is the good news! Thanks be to God! Hallelujah! Sermon Pr. Ric Elliott *Word in Song My Lord, What a Morning ELW Hymn 438 *Advent Affirmation of Faith Let us affirm our Advent hope. We are an Advent people, a people of hope. For us, Advent is a time of waiting, and so we wait. We wait for the coming of the One who is the fulfillment of God s promise, the fulfillment of hope, the declaration that we have been healed and restored. Even so, we are not a naïve people. We know that the world in which we live will continue to be filled with pain and sorrow. We know that hatred and violence will continue to exist. We know that death and separation will continue to be a part of our lives. Because we are an Advent people, we know that none of these things will win in the end. The Holy One is coming, to make holy once again all that was, is, and ever will be. And in our waiting and in our hoping, we work and worship, pray and play, give and receive, in all things hoping that peace, love and joy will reign in our lives and in our world, now and forever. Amen. 6

*Prayers of the People Emmanuel has come, is here, and is coming soon. Let us join in prayer for the church, the earth, and those who are in need, that all receive what God promises to give. After each petition: Filled with hope, Come, Lord Jesus, come. Receive our prayers, faithful God, as we watch and wait for your coming among us in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. *Share the Peace May the peace of Christ be with you! And also with you! The people greet one another with the peace of Christ. Offering Waiting Here for You Jesus Culture Sue Smith and Pam Harshey, soloists If faith can move the mountains, let the mountains move. We come with expectation, waiting here for you. You re the Lord of all creation but still You know my heart. The author of salvation, You ve loved me from the start. We're waiting here for You, With our hands lifted high in praise. And it s You we adore, singing hallelujah. You are ev ry thing You promised. You re faithfulness is true. And desperate for your presence, all we need You. Waiting here for You, with our hands lifted high in praise. And it s You we adore, singing hallelujah. Hallelujah. Hallelujah, Hallelujah. Hallelujah. Waiting here for You, with our hands lifted high in praise, and it s You we adore. Singing hallelujah. The assembly responds to the Word of God by gathering an offering for the mission of the church, including the care of those in need. The music is offered as a gift to the glory of God. You may give your offering in the offering plate, or by using a credit or debit card at the Giving Kiosk, or Give by Text ( ), or through Simply Giving, or by sending it to the church office. The table is set. 7

*Offering Prayer Let us pray. Bless these gifts, O God, that they become a source of hope for those caught in despair and a beacon of light to a world in need. Teach us patience as we care for all those in need until the coming of your Son, our Savior and Lord. Amen. Affirmation of 40 Years of Ministry in the ELCA *Word in Meal Meal As a carpenter, Joseph likely used his hands to make a Table for his family. With visions of family gathered around fresh warm bread, and simple table wine, Jesus and his siblings sat around this Table. It was at the Table that Jesus learned the power of feeding one another. It was at the Table that Jesus witnessed the telling of truth. It was at the Table that Jesus saw the power of sacrificial love. Jesus invites us to this Table. Jesus turns to his disciples both then and now and looks us in the eye and gives thanks for it all. He gives us a gift: his own self for our future. He broke the bread, and gave us an image: This is my body broken for you. Whenever you experience brokenness, my body is in that broken place. Do this for the remembrance of me. Then he took the table wine, and poured it, and told them: This is my life blood, my life blood that is shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Christ is present in, with, and under the bread and wine. These are the gifts of God for the people of God. We give thanks, God of Advent, for the risks Jesus took so that we receive life around the Table. We give thanks for the promises that God made to us so long ago and always kept. God with us. Emmanuel. Come, Lord Jesus, come. 8

*Lord s Prayer Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. *Invitation to Communion Come to Christ, who comes to us in this Holy Supper. Amen. Sacrament of Holy Communion All who are baptized and believe in the presence of Jesus Christ in Holy Communion are welcome to receive the Sacrament. To facilitate flow, the ushers invite the side sections, the front few rows and then go to the back rows. The people come forward, using the center aisle in two lines, to receive the bread from the ministers, then go to the side to dip their bread into the wine. Grape juice is used in our celebration so that all may freely receive. In addition, gluten free wafers are available. After receiving the elements, people may kneel at the altar rail for prayer, and return to their seats using the side aisles. Children may receive the sacrament if they have completed instruction with a pastor. Children who do not commune may come forward for a blessing. Communion Songs The assembly sings as we wait for the hope of the world. We Are Awaiting the Coming Words and music on next page. 9

Now the Silence ELW Hymn 460 Come Now, O Prince of Peace ELW Hymn 247 *Prayer Let us pray. Lord God, we give you thanks that you have fed us even now with the banquet that is yet to come. Keep us alert for signs of your presence in the world around us. Send us as healing oil and sheltering comfort to those in need, and make us bold in testifying to the light of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. 10

Sending *Blessing God most high, God with us, God poured out on us, strengthen our hearts with hope until the coming of our Lord Jesus. Almighty God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, bless you now and forever. Amen. *Sending Song Fling Wide the Door ELW Hymn 259 *Dismissal The assisting minister sends the assembly into mission.
