All-gender, single-occupancy restrooms are available off the hall to the right of the Hall of Heroes area. For more information about the church, please come to the Connect Center located next to Sources of Hope. Large-print bulletins and assisted listening systems are available in the bookstore. Good Morning, Cathedral of Hope United Church of Christ! Today we conclude our current sermon series, All In. This series, however, is unlike many other sermon series that we have offered here at Cathedral of Hope. It is in fact a multi-part sermon series which we will be preaching throughout the year as we are invited to delve deeper into our personal spirituality and to become a church that lives out what we say we believe. Over the past several weeks we have explored different ways in which we might be able to view our spiritual journey our spiritual path and have presented, quite passionately some might say, the 4Cs that will guide us as we become all in. Celebrate: our weekly worship practice and experience; Connect: our small group community experience where we study, share, and grow individually within a group of accountability; Commit: using our time, talent and treasure to make a difference in the world and to live a life of purpose and meaning; and today, Claim. Embodying Hope in the World: Claim Discipleship might be an unfamiliar word, but, in Christianity, the word disciple primarily refers to a dedicated follower of Jesus. This term is found in the New Testament only in the Gospels and Acts. In the ancient world a disciple was a follower or adherent of a teacher. It is not the same as being a student in the modern sense. A disciple in the ancient biblical world actively imitated both the life and teaching of Jesus. Our discipleship pathway asks us to examine all four of these Cs and to see where we might be deficient and need some more attention. They lead us throughout our journey and invite us to deepen our faith by embodying it fully in every aspect of our lives, so much so that it becomes a way of life. By making this path simple I sincerely hope that you will invest in your spiritual journey, from the front-door worship experience to becoming a fully engaged disciple of Christ, living in a way that others will want to know more about your experience of faith. It is my hope that your living example will encourage others to find out more about God for themselves. My sincere hope is that through our participation in worship celebrations, through our connections, our small group gatherings, by committing to acts of service and sacrifice through offering our time, talent and treasure to make a difference, and by claiming a personal faith that is shared through the way we live, we will discover a personal pathway to make a difference in the world as agents of love. Blessings, Neil s NOTE The Reverend Dr. Neil G. LITURGY OF THE WORD HEBREW LESSON Psalm 78: 1-7 The Inclusive Bible Johann Huebschmann My people, hear my teaching; listen to the words of my mouth! I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter things hidden from of old the things we have heard and known, things our ancestors have told us. We won t hide them from our children; we will tell the next generation. We ll tell them of your praiseworthy deeds, God, your power, and the wonders you have performed. You set up statutes for our forebears, and established the Law in Israel, which you commanded our ancestors to teach their children so the next generation would know them children yet to be born and as they come up, they would teach their own children. Then they would put their trust in you and not forget your deeds, but keep your commandments. ANTHEM I Can Tell the World Traditional Spiritual; arr. The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. When they saw the risen Christ, they fell down and worshiped; but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Creator and of the Christ and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age. One: All: This is the Gospel of Hope. 9 This is a series of articles prepared by the Music and Worship Team to give insight and background into musical elements of our services. LORD, YOU GIVE THE GREAT COMMISSION Author Jeffery Rowthorn, a former professor and bishop of the Episcopal Church, wrote this excellent text on the commands of Christ to heal the sick, preach the word, baptize, teach, and forgive, reflecting the words of Jesus Great Commission found in the 28th chapter of Matthew. The tune ABBOT S LEIGH was written by Cyril Vincent Taylor ( ) in the spring of 1941 for the text Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken. At the time Taylor was working at the wartime headquarters of the religious broadcasting department of the BBC in Abbot s Leigh, hence the tune s name. Taylor was an Anglican priest who held a number of positions throughout his career, serving finally as precentor and canon of Salisbury Cathedral from 1969 to I Can Tell the World American composer and arranger of choral music, Moses George Hogan ( ) was best known for his settings of African American spirituals. Hogan was a pianist, conductor and arranger of international renown. His works are celebrated and performed by high school, college, church, community, and professional choirs today. His most famous work is The Oxford Book of Spirituals, created in Hogan was born in New Orleans in His family attended the A.L. Davis New Zion Baptist Church where his father was a bass singer and his uncle the Minister of Music and organist. An accomplished pianist by the age of nine, Hogan was in the first graduating class of the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts High School. He studied at Oberlin Conservatory of Music, Juilliard School of Music, and later continued his studies of classical music in Vienna. Hogan died at the age of 45 of a brain tumor. The Sanctuary Choir s a cappella Anthem, I Can Tell the World, is a fabulous example of Hogan s ability to capture the feel of a traditional spiritual in an arrangement that is just as much fun to sing as it I LOVE TO TELL THE STORY In 1866 Katherine Arabella Hankey ( ) wrote a long, two-part poem on the life of Christ. The first half was captioned The Story Wanted, and the second half was titled The Story Told. This hymn is from the second half of the poem. Katherine Hankey, daughter of a London banker, was born in Clapham, England. Early in life she joined a group of Anglican Evangelicals headed by William Wilberforce. She promoted Bible study among young working women and traveled to South Africa to learn of missionary efforts there. William Gustavus Fischer ( ) composed the hymn tune HANKEY, named after the text s author, in The hymn became a favorite Sunday-school song. WORSHIP NOTES 7 Ash Wednesday is March 6 Why we use ashes as part of our liturgy Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, is observed on the Wednesday of the seventh week before Easter. The day is named for the practice of imposing ashes, an ancient practice and sign of repentance that is mentioned several times in the Bible, including Jonah 3: 5-9, Job 42: 6, Jeremiah 6: 26 and Matthew 11: 21. Early Christians adopted the use of ashes from Jewish practice as an external mark of penitence. Many modern congregations find this to be a meaningful part of the Ash Wednesday liturgy. Ashes symbolize several aspects of our human existence: Ashes remind us of God s condemnation of sin, as God said to Adam, Dust you are and to dust you shall return. (Genesis 3:19) Ashes suggest cleansing and renewal. In ancient times, they were used in the absence of soap. On Ash Wednesday, ashes are a penitential substitute for water as a reminder of our baptism. Ashes remind us of the shortness of human life, for, as it is said as we are buried, Earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust. Ashes are a symbol of our need to repent, confess our sins and return to God. The imposition of ashes You will have multiple opportunities to receive ashes this Ash Wednesday. The Interfaith Peace Chapel will be open from 11:45 a.m. - 1 p.m. for personal meditation with English and Spanish speaking clergy available for the imposition of ashes. Ashes will also be a part of Ashes on the Strip (Cedar Springs & Throckmorton) 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. and at the bilingual service at 7:15 p.m. in the church Sanctuary. Ashes are applied with the minister s thumb in the form of a small cross on the forehead of each person with the words, Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return. You are also invited to walk the labyrinth in the IPC Sanctuary throughout the day. Why We Use Incense in our Liturgy Ancient practice to be used on Ash Wednesday, March 6, at 7:15 p.m. At certain services during the liturgical year, Cathedral of Hope uses incense during worship. Some, whose church background did not include this practice, have asked why we do this. We believe that worship should be experiential. We are most fully engaged when the senses of sight, sound, smell, taste and touch are stirred. Incense is one way in which the Church throughout history has done that. Moreover, the use of incense is a thoroughly Biblical concept. We see it commanded of the Jews (Exodus 25:29) and then used in worship in Israel from that point on. Notice the prophecy of Malachi 1:11, From the rising of the sun to its setting my name is great among the nations, and in every place incense is offered to my name. God actually anticipates the use of incense by all people in God s name. In the New Testament, we see Zechariah offering incense in the sanctuary when the angel of the Lord appears to him (Luke 1:8-11). Later, in Revelation, we see the elders holding golden bowls of incense, which are the prayers of the saints (Revelation 5:8). Incense is the symbol of our prayers rising up to the Lord. It is also symbolic of spiritual cleansing and has been used in Christian worship since ancient times. So, as you smell the incense in our services, remember the history and symbolism behind it, and try to let it enhance your experience of worship!
