2 Welcome to Cathedral of Hope! What began in 1970 as a circle of 12 friends meeting weekly for worship and fellowship has grown into Cathedral of Hope, a Vibrant, Inclusive, Progressive (VIP) congregation of the United Church of Christ. Founded in and serving beyond the LGBTQ community, our mission is to reclaim Christianity as a faith of extravagant grace, radical inclusion, and relentless compassion by being a people of hope proclaiming God s inclusive love, removing barriers to faith and empowering all to grow in grace toward wholeness. If you are visiting Cathedral of Hope for the first time, we are glad to have you here, are blessed by your presence, and hope you will return often! If there is anything we can do to make your visit more enjoyable, please call on our Ushers to assist you. You re invited to use the restroom that corresponds with your gender identity or the restroom that is the safest and most comfortable for you. Gendered, multiple-occupancy restrooms are located near the double glass doors behind the Sanctuary. All-gender, single-occupancy restrooms are available off the hall to the right of the Hall of Heroes area. For more information about the church, please come to the Ministry & Visitor s Center located next to Sources of Hope. Our worship services are recorded for broadcast worldwide. We make every effort to respect your privacy; however, to ensure that you are not seen on screen, please sit in one of the last five rows of pews in the center section. Large-print bulletins and assisted listening systems are available in the bookstore. Neil s NOTE Good Morning, Cathedral of Hope United Church of Christ! We are half way through Anniversary Month at Cathedral of Hope. Many of you have already hosted or attended an anniversary party, and many have welcomed new folks to these gatherings and shared with them the mission and vision of our community. These celebrations help us to share the good news of God s love for all people; and when we say all we actually mean it! Compassion, Inclusion, Liberation, and Hope are some of the values that we are focusing on during this Anniversary month. These are the values that our church has been built on for the past 48 years and they are the values that are the bedrock of our faith and belief in God. Today we focus on liberation. Liberation is the act of setting someone free from imprisonment, slavery, or oppression; release. This was something that much of the Hebrew scriptures talk about as the Hebrew peoples found themselves in captivity repeatedly looking to God s saving action and liberation to set them free. It is also a central theme of Jesus as the Hebrew peoples found themselves under Roman rule and once again wanted to be set free. Jesus realized that liberation was not just needed physically, it was needed spiritually and today we find ourselves needing this kind of liberation. We need to be saved. The world needs to be saved. Saved from its destructiveness and division, hatred and ungodly values. 48 years is a relatively short time to be about this work, but what a work and what a difference we have made. Just think what a difference, another 48 years of impact CoH will have on the world and Christianity! Our Church is kind of a big deal, providing programs that live out God s promise of liberation. We are a vibrant, inclusive and progressive community of radical inclusion, extravagant grace, relentless compassion, and unwavering hope - providing healing that creates a place at the table for all. You might think we are bragging and maybe we are but we think that what God is doing in our church is worth bragging about. Sincerely, in Christ The Reverend Dr. Neil G. Dr. Michael Diaz For the Healing of the Nations Today s Processional Hymn is a marriage of old and (relatively) new. The lyrics of For the Healing of the Nations were written in 1965 by Fred Kaan ( ). Kaan was known and honored throughout the English speaking world as a hymn writer. Born in Haarlem, Netherlands, he lived through the Nazi occupation, witnessing the death of three grandparents from starvation. His parents were involved in the resistance movement, taking refugees into their home. Kaan was profoundly influenced by these early experiences, and became a pacifist and devoted his life to the work of the church in Great Britain, Sweden, and the United States. The opening phrase of this hymn text is a direct quote from a vision of heaven found in Revelation 22: In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bore twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. (Revelation 22: 2 KJV) The tune this text is paired with was adapted from an anthem by Henry Purcell ( ), one of England s most important pretwentieth century composers. Purcell began his musical life as a boy chorister. At the age of seventeen he was appointed the Continued on p. 2

4 GATHERING OF THE COMMUNITY **EXCHANGE OF PEACE Rev. Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas Rev. Erin Wyma LITURGY OF THE WORD MODERN LESSON from God of the Oppressed by James H. Cone Chris Jacobson-Chism The Christian community, therefore, is that community that freely becomes oppressed, because they know that Jesus himself has defined humanity s liberation in the context of what happens to the little ones. Christians join the cause of the oppressed in the fight for justice not because of some philosophical principle of the Good or because of a religious feeling of sympathy for people in prison. Sympathy does not change the structures of injustice. The authentic identity of Christians with the poor is found in the claim which the Jesus-encounter lays upon their own life-style, a claim that connects the word Christian with the liberation of the poor. Christians fight not for humanity in general but for themselves and out of their love for concrete human beings. In addition to countless anthems and choral works, Purcell composed a large amount of music for the theater. 5 **GOSPEL LESSON John 8: One: Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. All: Come, Holy Spirit. One: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John. All: Glory to you, O God. Then Jesus said to those who had believed in him, If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free. They answered Jesus, We are descendants of Sarah and Abraham and have never been slaves to anyone. What do you mean by saying, You will be made free? Jesus answered them, Very truly, I tell you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not have a permanent place in the household; an heir has a place there forever. So if the heir the Only Begotten makes you free, you will be free indeed. One: All: This is the Gospel of Hope. 6 LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST PRESENTATION OF OUR TITHES AND OFFERINGS OFFERTORY Freedom Reigns Words and Music by Michael Larson arr. John Wasson and Jared Haschek Voices of Hope and Orchestra See Text-to-Give Below CELEBRATION OF HOLY COMMUNION WORDS OF INSTITUTION PRAYER OF CONSECRATION INVITATION DISTRIBUTION OF THE ELEMENTS TO OUR GUESTS Cathedral of Hope celebrates an open communion. We understand the sharing of the bread and the cup in Jesus name to be a representation of an ancient vision of God s feast for all peoples. We don t require you to be a member of this church, or any church, to participate with us in this feast of grace. Simply come forward at the ushers direction. After dipping a wafer in the cup, which contains non-alcoholic grape juice, the minister will place it on your tongue and offer a brief blessing. If you prefer to serve yourself, cup your hands in front of you as you come to receive communion. Gluten-free Wafers are available from the silver intinction set at the center point. Please indicate your need to the ushers on the center aisle and they will direct you to the appropriate position. We ask that you serve yourself take a wafer and dip it in the juice in order to avoid cross-contamination by the server. During the serving of Holy Communion, feel free to join in our Music during Communion. Please also be mindful of those around you who are in prayer and meditation. MUSIC DURING COMMUNION All Are Welcome Let us build a house where love can dwell and all can safely live, A place where saints and children tell how hearts learn to forgive. Built of hopes and dreams and visions, rock of faith and vault of grace; Here the love of Christ shall end divisions: All are welcome, all are welcome, all are welcome in this place. Let us build a house where love is found in water, wine and wheat; A banquet hall on holy ground, where peace and justice meet. Here the love of God, through Jesus, is revealed in time and space; As we share in Christ the feast that frees us: All are welcome, all are welcome, all are welcome in this place. Let us build a house where all are named, their songs and visions heard And loved and treasured, taught and claimed as words within the Word. Built of tears and cries and laughter, prayers of faith and songs of grace, Let this house proclaim from floor to rafter: All are welcome, all are welcome, all are welcome in this place. 7 Just As I Am Just as I am, without one plea but that thy love was shown to me, and that thou bidd st me come to thee, O Lamb of God, I come, I come. Just as I am, thy love unknown has broken every barrier down; now to be thine, yea, thine alone, O Lamb of God, I come, I come. I come broken to be mended, I come wounded to be healed. I come desperate to be rescued, I come empty to be filled. I come guilty to be pardoned through the love of Christ, the Lamb. And I m welcomed with open arms, praise God, just as I am. Just as I am, I would be lost, but mercy and grace my freedom bought. And now, to glory in the cross, O Lamb of God, I come, I come. I come broken to be mended, I come wounded to be healed. I come desperate to be rescued, I come empty to be filled. I come guilty to be pardoned through the love of Christ, the Lamb. And I m welcomed with open arms, praise God, just as I am. It is well, with my soul, it is well, it is well with my soul. Words by Horatio G. Spafford; Music by Philip P. Bliss arr. Steven Couch Cathedral of Hope Every Life Shall Be a Song Composer Gwyneth Walker s setting of a text by the 19th century British author John Addington Symonds is a celebration of life, unity, and music. The work was written for the centennial of Chandler Music Hall in Randolph, Vermont. The 1907 Victorian-style music hall was built the midst of the heyday of such cultural building projects, but fell into disrepair and was no longer used by the end of the 1920s. In 1978, The Albert B. Chandler Cultural Foundation was formed to renovate the hall and turn it into a thriving arts and performance center for Vermont. Widely performed throughout the country, the music of American composer Gwyneth Walker (b. 1947) is beloved by performers and audiences alike for its energy, beauty, reverence, and drama. Lead On, Eternal Sovereign Ernest Warburton Shurtleff ( ), a member of the Andover, Massachusetts, Theological Seminary class of 1888, wrote this text for his class s graduation service. The hymn s imagery is of newly ordained soldiers being sent out to various field of ministry to battle for Christ. The adapted lyrics we sing today, prepared for the United Church of Christ s New Century Hymnal, remove some of the battle imagery, but keep the clarion cry to follow God s path to justice and peace. The hymntune, LANCASHIRE, was composed by Henry Thomas Smart ( ) in 1836 while living and working at a church in that English county. The tune first became popular in Nonconformist churches in England and enjoyed wider use after publication in a Presbyterian hymnal in

9 News BRIEFS July 15, 2018 Welcome to Worship at CoH! During the month of July, Cathedral of Hope will be celebrating our 48th Anniversary. Over the last 48 years, we have worked hard to build and to be a vibrant, inclusive and progressive community of faith. As we look forward to our future together, we invite you to celebrate the core values that we seek to live out in our daily life together. Affirmation of Our Core Values One: All: One: All: One: All: One: All: One: All: At the Cathedral of Hope, every member is a minister of the church. We believe we are here to serve, not to be served. To that end, we embrace these five core values: We value Compassion. We embody the tangible love of a Savior who fed the hungry, healed the hurting, and told us that what we did to the least we did to him. We are a people of Compassion. We believe Inclusion was a value Jesus held. Jesus came to include, not to exclude. All are welcome around God s table. We are a people of Inclusion. As people who embrace Liberation, we seek to challenge all oppression. By embodying grace we live out our liberation until all are set free. We are a people of Liberation. Amid the negatives of this world, we believe in Hope. We are people filled with joy and unrelenting optimism because we believe God is good. With God, all things are possible. God can use us to transform the world. We are a people of Hope. Finally, as a congregation seeking to reclaim the Christ of Christianity, we believe Jesus was the incarnation of God s grace. Jesus was the ultimate radical, who resisted the status quo of oppression and showed us the way to the abundant life God intends for all people. We are a people of Jesus. Erin Wyma at ewyma@cathedralofhope.com 10 Resist and Persist Faith and the Fight for Equality Over the past several years, the roles women play in public life have evolved significantly, as have the pressures that come with needing to do it all, have it all, and be all things to all people. And with this progress, misogyny has evolved as well. Today s discrimination is more subtle and indirect, expressed in double standards, microaggressions, and impossible expectations. In other ways, sexism has gotten more brash and repulsive as women have gained power and voice in the mainstream culture. Pastor and author Erin Wathen navigates the complex layers of what it means to be a woman in our time and place from the language we use to the clothes that we wear to the unseen and unspoken assumptions that challenge us at every turn. Resist and Persist reframes the challenges to women s equality in light of our current culture and political climate, providing a new language of resistance that can free women and men from the pernicious power of patriarchy. Horses Speak of God How Horses Can Teach Us to Listen and be Transformed With edgy honesty and humor, author Laurie Brock invites all who have longed for a deeper encounter with God to join her in the saddle (and occasionally on the ground) to discover how horses ways of knowing can help humans discover God speaking to us. This book from a powerful, vulnerable, clergy author is for anyone who struggles with the experience of faith in the institutional church, or who feels they have connected with God on a deep level outside of church, in everyday pastimes, or in emotional moments. 15 ADVERTISEMENTS UCC CORNERSTONE FUND If you have been thinking about placing an investment with the Cornerstone Fund, where you save with an Interest Rate Rebate, this is an excellent time to do so. Not only do you benefit personally, but you help Cathedral of Hope as well. Cathedral of Hope has its mortgage with the Cornerstone Fund. Investments of members and friends in the Cornerstone Fund could save us up to 1% on loan interest each year! Ready to earn a rebate? It s easy. Here s how it works: Choose your Cornerstone Fund investment with a minimum of $50 for a demand account, most people can participate. On your investment form, indicate Cathedral of Hope as the name of the church you want your investment to help. If you choose, encourage others to join you. Or keep your investment confidential. No one in your church will know how much you have invested, and you may add or withdraw funds as you desire according to the terms of your investment. To continue building Cathedral of Hope s future and earn an attractive return on your own investment, check the rates and download a prospectus and investment application today at For more information, contact Rev.
