2 Welcome to Cathedral of Hope! What began in 1970 as a circle of 12 friends meeting weekly for worship and fellowship has grown into Cathedral of Hope, a Vibrant, Inclusive, Progressive (VIP) congregation of the United Church of Christ. Founded in and serving beyond the LGBTQ community, our mission is to reclaim Christianity as a faith of extravagant grace, radical inclusion, and relentless compassion by being a people of hope proclaiming God s inclusive love, removing barriers to faith, and empowering all to grow in grace toward wholeness. If you are visiting Cathedral of Hope for the first time, we are glad to have you here, are blessed by your presence, and hope you will return often! If there is anything we can do to make your visit more enjoyable, please call on our Ushers to assist you. You re invited to use the restroom that corresponds with your gender identity or the restroom that is the safest and most comfortable for you. Gendered, multipleoccupancy restrooms are located near the double glass doors behind the Sanctuary. All-gender, single-occupancy restrooms are available off the hall to the right of the Hall of Heroes area. For more information about the church, please come to the Connect Center located next to Sources of Hope. Large-print bulletins and assisted listening systems are available in the bookstore. Good Morning, Cathedral of Hope United Church of Christ! Sundays have almost always been my favorite day of the week. I love the fact that every Sunday I get to gather with people who are intent on finding time to be inspired and encouraged by their relationship with God. Last Sunday, as part of our All In theme, I spoke about the need to make worship a priority. For many of us, Sunday is our worship day, but I am grateful that here at Cathedral of Hope we have many opportunities to worship throughout the week, and the month. Many also make PULSE and REFLECT on Wednesday, or our Thursday Contemplative service, their regular worship service. However or whenever we choose to worship, I believe that a weekly experience of coming together as community to celebrate God s presence in our church is an important habit that strengthens our relationship with God and keeps us on track sees us reclaiming two essential words in our Christian vocabulary: discipleship and evangelism. As a part of our individual all in and deepening experience of the Divine in our lives, a discipleship path helps us to see where we are in our everyday living experience of Christ, and assists us in paying attention to the places that we might need to live into. Today we move from the first C of our discipleship path, Celebrate, to the second, Connect. A People of Hope: Connect Worship is often the first step for many of us in a desire to grow spiritually and to find connection to God and others. Here at Cathedral of Hope we strongly desire to be a people of hope and to offer many small-group opportunities to build relationships with one another. Geographical, affinity, care, and short-term groups, as well as traditional Bible Study and Book Study groups, help us to establish, build, and deepen our relationships with one another. These groups also provide opportunities to connect, care, and grow. They also help us to discover and learn more about God and God s love for us all. Lent is not too far away, and we will be launching a plethora of small, home based, Lenten groups to help you connect with people with whom you can establish deep and meaningful relationships. Sometimes our large Sunday celebrations do not facilitate this for us, so we want you to consider making time in your spiritual discipleship path to attend one of these groups. More information will be coming out in the next few weeks, and I hope that you will be excited about this opportunity, for YOU. My sincere hope is that, through our small group gatherings, we will discover a deeper connection with one another, as well as opportunities to make a difference in the world as agents of love. Blessings, Neil s NOTE The Reverend Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas Senior Pastor IMPORTANT Neil s NOTE INFO Connect Center If you are joining us for the first time, stop by the Info Bar in the Connect Center to meet and greet with volunteers and staff, and to pick up a special gift from us to you. **Temporary construction of the Children s Ministry area will mean a relocation for childcare, Children s Church and Youth Group on Sundays: Childcare Children are temporarily relocated to the East Wing with an entrance outside to the right of the entrance doors. Roger Poindexter They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. Awe came upon everyone, because many wonders and signs were being done by the apostles. All who believed were together and had all things in common; they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need. Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. And day by day God added to their number those who were being saved. CANTICLE We Are One in Christ by James Chepponis based on Thaxted by Gustav Holst ( ) Sanctuary Choir Cathedral Brass and Percussion The refrain is sung first by the Choir; The congregation repeats it immediately and as indicated below. PASTORAL PRAYER We, the many who are gathered, are united here as one. In this joyful celebration, recall what God has done. Refrain In the word of God proclaimed here, the good news of truth is heard. In the telling of the stories, be open to God s word. Refrain In the bread of life here given, we become what we receive. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John. Glory to you, O God. Jesus continued, I ask not only on behalf of these, but also on behalf of those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one. As you, Abba, are in me and I am in you, may they also be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. The glory that you have given me I have given them, so that they may be one, as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may become completely one, so that the world may know that you have sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. 9 WORSHIP NOTES This is a series of articles prepared by the Music and Worship Team to give insight and background into musical elements of our services. O CHURCH OF GOD, UNITED Based on Acts 2: 5-11, this text by Frederick Morley exhorts the scattered Church to join together to Proclaim to all one message of the good news of Jesus. From every nation on the earth we should come forward to praise the living Lord and place our faith in God s Word. The final verse reminds us of Jesus prayer in John 17 in which he asked God that we may be one. The composer of the tune, ELLACOMBE, is unknown. It has been traced to German Roman Catholics in the eighteenth century, and may have been used first in the chapel of the Duke of Wirtemberg, Germany. It is named for a place in Devonshire, England. We Are One in Christ Church composer James Chepponis has arranged the hymn tune THAXTED, adapted from Gustav Holst s Jupiter movement of his orchestral suite The Planets, in a refrain-and-verse manner. The newly written text expresses unity in Christ through Word, Sacrament, and the sending forth of the gathered believers, and is a perfect response to the hearing of today s first lesson from the second chapter of the book of Acts. The congregation is invited to join in singing the refrain portion of this regal tune. MANY GIFTS, ONE SPIRIT This well-known Anthem with words and music by Allen Pote is a choral prayer addressed to God, asking for unity. Although we are many different people with many different gifts, we are reminded of what we hold in common: we are all members of the family of God, part of the body of Christ, and are on unique spiritual journeys that lead to God s throne. Allen Pote (b. 1945) was born in Kansas and educated at Texas Christian University. A Fulbright Scholar, he studied in Brussels, Belgium, and took advanced work at Union Theological Seminary in New York City. He is currently a full-time composer living in Pensacola, Florida, where, with his wife Susan, he is co-director of the Pensacola Children s Choir. The king sends the boy to slay his second connection, the giant warrior, Goliath. His most important connection, however, is with Saul s son, Jonathan, who becomes David s friend and protector for the rest of his life. Christians are obsessed with sex. For generations people have suffered pain, guilt, and judgment as a result of this toxic fixation on sex, the body, and physical pleasure. Author and Pastor Nadia Bolz-Weber unleashes her critical eye, her sharp pen, and her vulnerable but hopeful soul on the caustic, fear-riddled, and religiously inspired messages about sex that have fed our shame. Bolz-Weber offers no simple amendments or polite compromises. Instead, this tattooed, swearing, modern-day pastor calls for a new reformation. She urges us to take antiquated, sexist ideas about sex, gender, and our bodies and burn them the f*ck down and start all over. This is a journey of holy resistance. Along the way, as antidotes to shame, heresy, and all-too-familiar injustice, Bolz-Weber dispenses grace, freedom, and courage. She shares stories, poetry, and scripture, cultivating Signs of Love resilient hope and audacious love rooted in good news that is powerful enough, transgressive enough, and beautiful enough to heal not only the ones who have Tis the season Valentine s Day will be been hurt but also those who have done the hurting. here in just 4 days!
