Thank you. CoH SUNDAY Worship Untangled: Reclaiming Our Faith Good Morning, Cathedral of Hope United Church of Christ! The new year has begun and I, for one, am very excited about what I see God calling us to be as a community of faith. We are on a bold quest to reclaim Christianity as a faith of extravagant grace, radical inclusion and relentless compassion. This quest calls us to examine our own experience of Christianity and to not be afraid to bring areas of ourselves, and the church, that do not measure up to the path of Jesus into the light, where they can be thoughtfully examined. This is work that has constantly challenged the Church of Jesus Christ: to remain faithful to the central good news that was proclaimed by Jesus himself. It is revealed today by our listening to, and experiencing the work of, the Holy Spirit, and being open to Her voice among us. Prophets of the past, and in our own day, have been voices used by the Holy Spirit to be counter-cultural, reminding us that while we are in the world, we are not of the world. Today we begin a new sermon series that will start to set the scene for the work of our beloved Cathedral in this new year. As we remain faithful to the call of Jesus, we will ask ourselves how we can live more fully into the good news and shed light on the toxic theology that has become accepted by many parts of the church, causing harm and causing some to reject the love of God that our Savior spoke of. This is prophetic work and there seems to be a move in our world to revisit what it means to be a follower of Jesus, rather than a supporter of any particular church or populist theology that excludes, and does not include. Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (born Michael King Jr., January 15, 1929 April 4, 1968) was an American Baptist minister and activist who became the most visible spokesperson and leader in the civil rights movement. He is best known for his role in the advancement of civil rights using the tactics of nonviolence and civil disobedience based on his Christian beliefs and inspired by the nonviolent activism of Mahatma Gandhi. Among Dr. King s most compelling visions is that of a Beloved Community a community in which people of different backgrounds recognize that we are all interconnected and that our individual well-being is inextricably linked to the well-being of others. See related story on page 13. As we lay the foundation for what will follow in the coming weeks here at Cathedral of Hope United Church of Christ, we celebrate the work of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and set our scene today, contrasting the vision of Jesus that Reverend King reflects to the state of Christianity today. I believe that the church can save the world, but it can do so only if we remain faithful to the liberating word and work of Jesus and make them our own. I look forward to worshipping with you today, knowing that as we invest ourselves in our faith, willing to acknowledge our shortcomings as individuals and institutions, we can each make the difference that is needed to make our live, and our faith, one of extravagant grace, radical inclusion and relentless compassion. Let s make it a great day! Sincerely, in Christ The Reverend Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas Senior Pastor HOPEQuotes I am latino and bisexual, and this is first church where I have truly felt welcome. PASTORAL PRAYER (9 A.M.) SACRAMENT OF HOLY BAPTISM (11 A.M.) GRADUAL Choir: All: Holy words long preserved for our walk in this world, they resound with God s own heart, O let the ancient words impart. Words and Music by Lynn DeShazo Integrity s Hosanna! Music adapted and arranged by David Moldenhauer; CCLI License # At the Font We Start Our Journey (on page 1) This morning s Processional Hymn is a marriage of old and (relatively) new. The lyrics for At the Font We Start Our Journey were written in 1991 for the Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut by British born bishop Jeffrey Rowthorn. Rowthorn has held positions at Union Theological Seminary and Yale University Divinity School. The hymn tune this text is paired with was adapted from an anthem by Henry Purcell ( ), one of England s most important pretwentieth century composers. Purcell began his musical life as a boy chorister. At the age of seventeen he was appointed the organist of Westminster Abbey. In addition to countless anthems and choral works, Purcell composed a large amount of music for the theater. Toward the end of his life he was organist for both Westminster Abbey and the Chapel Royal. This majestic hymn tune bears the name Westminster Abbey in honor of Purcell s long association with that church. Give Me Jesus Give Me Jesus originated as an African-American spiritual written during the time of slavery in the United States. The lyrics are simple, but poignant whether we are in tragedy or triumph, whether we are weathering storms or counting treasures, we should long for Jesus above all. The fact that Give Me Jesus was written by people stripped of all dignity and possessions says much about what Jesus is, what he can give, and his very nature! This simple song teaches that we should seek Christ throughout our lives and long for his presence even as we die. 2

5 **GOSPEL LESSON Mark 1: 4-11 One: All: One: All: God be with you. And also with you. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark. Glory to you, O God. John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. He proclaimed, The One who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; but the One to come will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. Immediately upon coming out of the water, Jesus saw the heavens opening and the Spirit descending upon him like a dove. Then a voice came from the heavens, You are my Son, the Beloved. With you I am well pleased. One: All: This is the Gospel of Hope. Praise to you, Creator, Christ, and Holy Spirit. **GLORIA Music by Tom Brooks & Don Moen Integrity s Hosanna! Music arr. Steven Couch ; CCLI License # SERMON Untangled: Reclaiming Our Faith Rev. Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas The Beloved Community I Was There to Hear Your Borning Cry (on page 4) John Carl Ylvisaker is perhaps best known for his hymn I Was There to Hear Your Borning Cry. He was born in Moorhead, Minnesota and is a graduate of Concordia College located there. During the last 55 years John s words and music have been a powerful influence on the development of new worship materials for the church, with his compositions appearing in hundreds of worship resources. Prior to the merger of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), the Media Services Center of the American Lutheran Church (ALC) employed John Ylvisaker to write original compositions for its resources. In 1985, the ALC was doing a series on baptism called Reflections. John began work on the song before any footage for the video had been shot. When the media team met to put the music with the video for the first time, it became obvious that the dance-like beat and fast rhythm of the music John had written did not match the gentle scenes being depicted on the screen. The lyrics were on target, but not the music. As he left the studio that day, John received the suggestion to take it home and personalize it. Thus began the most arduous task any composer can face changing a completed work into something else. However, the original false labor later gave way to the birth of BORNING CRY, which is now included in songbooks and hymnals around the world. 3

Liberty & Restraint Art Exhibit will be presented in the Interfaith Peace Chapel beginning TODAY. Perez s focus on Philip Johnson in Dallas and Fort Worth will place paintings and sculptures of Johnson s work in and near his structures. Simultaneously, large-scale paintings and sculptures will be exhibited in Dallas Contemporary as a base for the project, highlighting and addressing the significance of the eight Johnson locations in North Texas. From the 1960s to the late 1980s, Philip Johnson was instrumental in changing the urban matrix of Dallas and Fort Worth with his buildings, each exemplary of his unique architectural vision. This metroplex-wide exhibition highlights the work of a seminal architect by pairing Enoc Perez s paintings and sculptures with Philip Johnson s architecture. Perez, whose artist practice involves examining architecture, aims to create a larger dialogue about architectural structures and their locations. Enoc Perez has been interested in Philip Johnson s career for many years. In 2015 he completed an ambitious series of paintings of New York s Lipstick Building which were shown at Johnson s Glass House in Connecticut. The exhibition presented six renditions of the iconic elliptical office tower in Manhattan designed by architects Philip Johnson and John Burgee. For each work, Perez used his characteristic style to explore the formal qualities of the Lipstick Building in a variety of palettes. Through the city-wide exhibition Enoc Perez: Liberty and Restraint, Dallas Contemporary intends to expand upon Perez s exhibition at the Glass House by addressing the eight Johnson designed buildings throughout Dallas and Fort Worth Amon Carter Museum of American Art (Fort Worth; 1961), The Beck House (Dallas; 1964), John F. Kennedy Memorial (Dallas; 1970), Fort Worth Water Gardens (1974), Thanks-Giving Square (Dallas; 1976), The Crescent (Dallas; 1985), Comerica Tower (Dallas; 1987) and Cathedral of Hope (Dallas; 2010).
