2 WELCOME to Worship! What began in 1970 as a circle of 12 friends meeting weekly for worship and fellowship has grown into Cathedral of Hope, a Vibrant, Inclusive, Progressive (VIP) congregation of the United Church of Christ. Founded in and serving beyond the LGBTQ community, Cathedral of Hope s mission is to reclaim Christianity as a faith of extravagant grace, radical inclusion and relentless compassion. Your presence here is a blessing to us, and we hope you will return often. The VISION of Cathedral of Hope is to be a community of hope proclaiming God s inclusive love, removing barriers to faith and empowering all people to grow in grace toward wholeness. Notes for Newcomers Restrooms are located near the double glass doors behind the Sanctuary. Private rest rooms are available off the hall to the right of the Hall of Heroes area. For more information about the church, please come to the Ministry & Visitor s Center located next to Sources of Hope bookstore. Our worship services are recorded for broadcast around the world. We make every effort to respect your privacy. However, if you would like to ensure that you are not seen on screen, please sit in one of the last five rows of pews in the center section. Large-print bulletins and assisted listening systems are available in the bookstore. In consideration of those seated around you, PLEASE, No Flash Photography during the service. PLEASE, Silence Your Cell Phone! Thank you. TIME TO Good Morning, Cathedral of Hope United Church of Christ! This past Thursday, the entire staff took time together to listen to God s spirit. We took time together to listen and to discern what God is doing in our church, in our community, and in our world. During this retreat, we asked God to speak to us as we lead together in uncertain times, and to encourage us in our Time to Shift season here at Cathedral of Hope. Listening was the theme of this past Sunday s services, and I am so grateful to a God who is still speaking, as we have the opportunity to hear that still small voice which is with us today. As we continue this sermon series in preparation for Shift Happens, which will be our focus in February we come today to think about the call of Christ to be a people of service. There are many opportunities to be of service in our church, and in our world. It is said that being of service brings much blessing and, for many, it brings a sense of gratitude and spiritual growth. This Time to Shift is all about spiritual growth. It is about finding ways to deepen our personal experience of God, to care, connect and grow through the various opportunities that we have available to us. In the coming weeks, you will be hearing about more opportunities to search out your own spiritual location and how to make best use of your available time with God to be spiritually fed and nurtured, and to grow. I am hoping that you and I will take our spiritual growth seriously and that we will take the time to prepare ourselves to go deeper and to live out the values of our faith, both today and every day. It is my fervent belief that investing in ourselves as spiritual beings enhances our lives as human beings. It is this shift that our teacher, Jesus, came to call people back to more than 2000 years ago, and it is this shift that the Holy Spirit urges us to make now. The Spirit is still alive, and today I invite us all to prepare ourselves so that our service comes from a place of gratitude, grace and love, which will inspire us in the days ahead. Sincerely, in Christ The Reverend Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas Senior Pastor HOPEQuotes Church was so freaking awesome! I left there feeling so joyous PULSE Service C.S. STAFF * Rev. Dr. Neil G. 3 ORDER of WORSHIP January 29, & 11 a.m. 4th Sunday after the Epiphany LITURGY OF PREPARATION PRELUDE GATHERING OF THE COMMUNITY **EXCHANGE OF PEACE **PROCESSIONAL HYMN Allegro from Concerto in D Minor by J.S. Bach Katrina Kratzer and William Sprinkle, violin duo David Moldenhauer, piano Called as Partners in Christ s Service Rev. Erin Wyma Rev. Dr. Michael Diaz WORSHIP NOTES Insight into the various elements of our services Words by Jane Parker Huber Jane Parker Huber Music by John Zundel OneLicense.net License # A **The people will rise in body or spirit. BEECHER Called as Partners in Christ s Service Jane Parker Huber (b. 1926) wrote the words for our Processional Hymn in 1981 for the women s breakfast held when two Presbyterian denominations convened joint General Assemblies in Houston. The partnership she originally referred to was that of women and men in ministry, but the hymn s meaning has expanded. Jane Parker Huber inherited her love for service through the Presbyterian Church from both her father and mother. Her father was president of Hanover College in Indiana, and her mother served on two nation Presbyterian bodies. The hymn tune BEECHER was written by John Zundel ( ) in The tune s name is for Henry Ward Beecher, pastor of Plymouth Church in Brooklyn, New York, where Zundel served as organist for thirty years. Zundel was born and educated in Hochdorf, Germany, but immigrated to the United States. He served different churches in New York and in 1850 began a thirty-year ministry of music at Plymouth Church. 4 **INVOCATION CHILDREN S MOMENT (11 A.M.) LITURGY OF THE WORD EPISTLE LESSON Philippians 2: 1-4 Minister Isabel Marquez-E If then there is any encouragement in Christ, any consolation from love, any sharing in the Spirit, any compassion and sympathy, make my joy complete: be of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility regard others as better than yourselves. Let each of you look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others. MINISTRY IN MUSIC Others Words and Music by Israel Houghton and Meleasa Houghton Chris Chism, soloist; Strings of the Orchestra Sean Baugh, piano; Sheryl Lewis, bass; Ellen Gay, drums PASTORAL PRAYER GRADUAL Choir: All: Speak, O Lord, as we come to you to receive the food of your holy word. 5 **GOSPEL LESSON John 12: One: God be with you. All: And also with you. One: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John. All: Glory to you, O God. Among those who went up to worship at the Passover festival were some Greeks. They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, Sir, we wish to see Jesus. Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. Jesus answered them, The hour has come for the Chosen One to be glorified. Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me will be honored by God. One: All: This is the Gospel of Hope. Praise to you, Creator, Christ and Holy Spirit. **GLORIA Word and Music by Danny Ray arr. And I said, Here am I; send me! and 1 Samuel 3. Despite its Catholic origins, Schutte s hymn is sung in many Protestant worship services and is found in most newer Christian hymnals. Translated into over 20 languages, it has been used at many Papal Masses and at International World Youth Day events. A 2004 survey conducted by The Tablet, an international Catholic magazine, reported Here I Am, Lord as reader s favorite. A survey conducted in 2008 by the United Methodist Church found Schutte s hymn second favorite behind Amazing Grace. 10 Today in Children s Church Today s theme is Preparation for Service. We will look back on the preparation for last year s Christmas program and ask Why do we have rehearsals and practice before we present plays or performances? Our illustrated PowerPoint lesson tells us about God s preparation of Moses for his time of service. When God s voice spoke to Moses from the burning bush, Moses was told that God had been watching him and knew Moses was ready to serve. The Bible verse today tells us about serving others with humility. We will ask to hear ideas about what humility is. How can we serve other people with humility in a church or at home? Contact Dan Peeler at dpeeler@cathedralofhope.com if you have any questions about the Children and Families Ministry. Sacred Conversations on Race: A Journey of Transformation Tuesdays, February 21 to April 11, IPC Lower Level, 6:30 p.m. In August of 2016, the national leadership of the United Church of Christ made available its curriculum Sacred Conversations on Race: White Privilege, Let s Talk. Lauded by Brian McLaren for its thoughtfulness, the study is distinctive in that each chapter brings together the experiences and perspectives of 5 different ministers African American and white, female and male to form a rich mosaic. The sections treat such topics as spiritual autobiography told through the lens of race, whiteness as the norm, the ways that education, housing practices, income disparities, and the health care system disadvantage African Americans, and becoming an ally. Indicating the urgency of this work, Rev. John Dorhauer, General Minister and President of the UCC, asserts: One of America s lingering realities is the unprocessed grief, shame, fear, anger, and guilt of living in a culture of racial inequality. It is a heavy price we pay to maintain our silence in the face of such evil, no matter what benefits we accrue because of it. On Tuesday, February 21 at 6:30 p.m., we will begin an 8-week spiritual journey anchored in the UCC curriculum and our own experience (Copies of the curriculum will be provided to participants). Our hope is that the importance of this topic will call a diverse group of 15 people who are committed to this transformative work and who are willing to be both honest and vulnerable in our sacred conversations. Please prayerfully consider joining us. The first evening will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a shared meal and last 2 hours. All other weeks will run from 6:30 to 8, and we ask that participants hold an extra 30 minutes for discussion as needed. This class is limited to fifteen participants, so register now. Facilitators: Roger Poindexter and Pat Saxon. Pat at spiritsister26@aol.com with any questions.

12 SHIFT: Spiritual Locations SHIFT: What are Spiritual Locations? We are so excited about the kind of spiritual growth our congregation is about to experience as we SHIFT into 2017! We are about to embark on a spiritual pilgrimage individually and together that has the capacity to change ourselves, our church and our city in miraculous ways! We hope you have been challenged as we enter a new season of spiritual growth and renewal we are calling SHIFT at Cathedral of Hope United Church of Christ. Rev. Dr. Neil Cazares-Thomas has been preaching in our first sermon series of 2017 about the ways in which we not only meet God in our own lives, but how we can respond to God and grow both individually and as a church community. He has preached on Searching, Changing, Connecting, Listening, and finally Serving and Preparing. These are the lenses with which to view how best to facilitate growth in your personal faith journey. Our prayer and hope is that you will find a place at CoH to connect with others, care for and be cared for, and grow in your spiritual journey with God. Remember that God is wherever you are, and God is calling you to be in relationship with the divine and the community. We hope to give you the tools to do just that with our new programming model of SHIFT. SHIFT: What is your part in all of this now? We want you to prayerfully and meaningfully get out your calendars and in the last two weeks of February consider being a part of a small group where you will meet others on this journey and together find where you are spiritually located in this season. Starting February 5, we will give you resources to find your own spiritual location. This is all leading up to new programming which will be offered seasonally;the first season begins in Lent (March 1). SPIRITUAL LOCATIONS Searching Not sure where I am or what I believe. ($5) Into the Silent Land A Guide to the Christian Practice of Contemplation Sitting in stillness, the practice of meditation, and the cultivation of awareness are usually thought to be the preserves of Hindus and Buddhists. Author Martin Laird shows that the Christian tradition of contemplation has its own teachings on using a prayer word to focus the mind, working with the breath to cultivate stillness, and the practice of inner vigilance or awareness. We find the ancient wisdom of both the Christian East and West brought sharply to bear on the modern-day longing for radical openness to God in the depths of the heart. Into the Silent Land serves as a guide for those who desire to journey deeper into the silence of God. The heart of the book focuses on negotiating key moments of struggle, when the whirlwind of distractions or the brick wall of boredom makes it difficult to continue. Laird shows that these inner struggles, even wounds, that any person of prayer must face, are like riddles, trying to draw out of us our own inner silence.
