Throughout the month we have been celebrating the many achievements of our community of faith. Today we welcome Reverend Elder Dr. Troy Perry back to Cathedral of Hope. The Rev. Elder Dr. Troy D. Perry founded Metropolitan Community Churches with 12 people in his living room in Los Angeles on October 6, When Cathedral of Hope was founded in 1972, we were known as Metropolitan Community Church of Dallas. Later we were named Cathedral of Hope MCC. In 2006, we became a congregation of the United Church of Christ. For details of Rev. Elder Dr. Perry s life, please see the article on page 7. Reverend Perry be available to sign his books following the 9am service today, and will preach at the 11am service. We will receive our Anniversary Offering today. This is a birthday gift to the church over and above your general tithe and offering. Anniversaries help us to celebrate the achievements of the past year as well as to look forward and vision our future together. They are opportunities to pause in the life of a community and give thanks as well as to commit, again, to our God who expresses Godself through us as individuals and as a people of God. On this 47th anniversary, we come with gratitude and thanksgiving, knowing that the best is still yet to come. We invite you to join us later today in our Anniversary Party Celebration, Hope Takes Flight party at the Frontiers of Flight Museum at the southeastern corner of Dallas Love Field Airport on Lemmon Avenue. We celebrate and give thanks for the grace and love of God that has been shown us as we serve a world in need and as we invite others to the transforming work of the Holy that meets us here today. May our shared experience of worship today inspire us to be better, do better and live in the abundant grace of the Good News of God who created us good, yes, very good. 3 ORDER of WORSHIP July 30, & 11 a.m. 47th ANNIVERSARY SUNDAY LITURGY OF PREPARATION PRELUDE CALL TO WORSHIP **PROCESSIONAL HYMN Overture of Praise arr. Keith Christopher Cathedral of Hope Orchestra Now Thank We All Our God Rev. Andria Davis WORSHIP NOTES Insight into the various musical elements of our services Overture of Praise The Orchestra s Prelude today is based on the hymn Praise Be to God, the Almighty. This great hymn by Joachim Neander, based essentially on Psalm 103: 1-6 and Psalm 150, was first published in As the soul s ardent praise to God, it is one of the most beloved such hymns in German and English-speaking countries alike. Personal in nature throughout, it is appropriate for festive occasions in the life of individual Christians as well as for celebrations in the life of the Church. The translation upon which the version we sing today is based, is that published by Catherine Winkworth in her Chorale Book for England, The hymn tune LOBE DEN HERREN, first published in 1665, exists in many versions and is probably based on a folk melody. Now Thank We All Our God Lutheran deacon and composer Martin Rinckart left us a beautiful testament to faith and thanksgiving in the hymn Now Thank We All Our God. Martin Rinckart served in the walled town of Eilenburg during the horrors of the Thirty Years War of Eilenburg became an overcrowded refuge for the surrounding area. The fugitives suffered from epidemic and famine. At the beginning of 1637, the year of the Great Pestilence, there were four ministers in Eilenburg. One abandoned his post for healthier areas and Words by Martin Rinkart, adapted Music by Johann Crüger OneLicense.net License # A **The people will rise in body or spirit. 1 NUN DANKET Rinckart officiated at the funerals of the other two. As the sole pastor, he often conducted services for as many as 40 to 50 persons a day some 4,480 in all. In May of that year, his wife died. By the end of the year, the refugees had to be buried in trenches without services. It seems incongruous that a hymn like Now Thank We All Our God should come out of such circumstances. However, Rinckart wrote the first two stanzas, not as a hymn for public worship, but as a table grace for his family. At the end of the war, his hymn was sung to celebrate the signing of the Peace of Westphalia the treaty that ended the war.

4 **INVOCATION GATHERING OF THE COMMUNITY Rev. Erin Wyma Rev. Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas **EXCHANGE OF PEACE CHILDREN S MOMENT (11 A.M.) LITURGY OF THE WORD HEBREW LESSON Psalm 30: 1-5 Aidan Braud I will exalt you, O God, because you raised me up and kept my enemies from gloating over me. I cried to you for help, my God, and you healed me. You brought me back from the realm of the dead; you spared me from going down into the pit. Sing to God, all you faithful people! Praise God s holy name! Our God s anger is fleeting, but God s favor lasts a lifetime. There may be tears during the night, but joy comes in the morning. ANTHEM How Great Thou Art Words by Stuart K. Hine; Music: Swedish Folk Song; arr. Dan Forrest Sanctuary Choir and Orchestra Worship Note on p. 3 ANNIVERSARY PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Great God, we give you thanks for the work you have done in this church over the past fortyseven years. We give you thanks for your love and faithfulness. When we called on your name, you made your presence known to us. When we prayed, you heard us. When we proclaimed and heard your Word, and shared your Sacraments, you have been in our midst. You have accepted our humble sacrifices of praise and thanksgiving. You have listened to our confessions and forgiven our wrongs. You have sent your Holy Spirit to heal and comfort our hurts, our sorrows, our infirmities, and our losses. Continue to empower us with your Spirit, O God, that we might share the news of your unconditional love with all people. Help us as we move into the next forty-seven years to continue to show the true face of Christ in all we do and say. Show us how we may give care and support to the needy, love and mercy to the broken. Break down those prejudices and barriers which divide us, and make us one in you. Show us new ways of loving one another and those around us. Continue to comfort, heal, and lift up the broken and afflicted among us. By the promise of your presence, bring us your healing love. Hear our prayer, O God. Bring us at last to the joy of your eternal home, where, with the cloud of witnesses of this church who have gone before us, and with all your saints, we may evermore praise your name. Hear our prayer, O God. Draw our hearts to you, guide our minds, fill our imaginations, and make us wholly yours. Use us as you will, to the glory of your holy name. Amen. 2

5 GRADUAL Choir: Speak, O Lord, as we come to you to receive the food of your holy word. Take your truth, plant it deep in us; shape and fashion us in your likeness. Words and Music by Keith Getty and Stuart Townend Thankyou Music CCLI License # **GOSPEL LESSON Matthew 16: Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. Come, Holy Spirit. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew. Glory to you, O God. Rev. Dr. Michael Diaz When Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked the disciples, What do people say about who the Chosen One is? And they said, "Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets. Jesus said to them, But who do you say that I am? Simon Peter answered, You are the Christ, the Firstborn of the living God. Jesus replied, Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Abba God who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the realm of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Then Jesus strictly ordered the disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah. This is the Gospel of Hope. Praise to you, Creator, Christ and Holy Spirit. How Great Thou Art This hymn, popularized by the Billy Graham Crusades, has entered various hymnals by a rather circuitous route. Inspired by the beauty of the Swedish meadows and lakes after a summer thunderstorm in 1885, Carl Boberg wrote the original Swedish text. The first two stanzas are reminiscent of the psalmist s words, The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of God s hands (Psalm 19:1). The hymn was translated into German, then Russian. Stuart K. Hine and his wife, an English missionary couple working in western Ukraine, learned the Russian version during their missionary work. Stuart Hine translated the first three stanzas into English. With the outbreak of World War II, the Hines returned to Britain where, in 1948, the fourth stanza was added. The hymn tune O STORE GUD is a Swedish tune of unknown origin, first published in The compelling arrangement by contemporary composer Dan Forrest for Choir and Orchestra offers a fresh and dramatic perspective on this beloved hymn. 3

We understand the sharing of the bread and the cup in Jesus name to be a representation of an ancient vision of God s feast for all peoples. We don t require you to be a member of this church, or any church, to participate with us in this feast of grace. Simply come forward at the ushers direction. After dipping a wafer in the cup, which contains non-alcoholic grape juice, the minister will place it on your tongue and offer a brief blessing. If you prefer to serve yourself, cup your hands in front of you as you come to receive communion. Gluten-free Wafers are available from the silver intinction set at the center point. Please indicate your need to the ushers on the center aisle and they will direct you to the appropriate position. We ask that you serve yourself take a wafer and dip it in the juice in order to avoid cross-contamination by the server. During the serving of Holy Communion, feel free to join in our Music during Communion. Please also be mindful of those around you who are in prayer and meditation. 4

7 MUSIC DURING COMMUNION All Are Welcome Let us build a house where love can dwell and all can safely live, A place where saints and children tell how hearts learn to forgive. Built of hopes and dreams and visions, rock of faith and vault of grace; Here the love of Christ shall end divisions: All are welcome, all are welcome, all are welcome in this place. TO OUR GUESTS It has become a tradition at the Cathedral of Hope to rise as we end our time of communion (as indicated by **), join hands as an expression of our unity in Christ, and lift them up in glory to God. We invite you to join as you are able, in body or spirit. Let us build a house where love is found in water, wine and wheat; A banquet hall on holy ground, where peace and justice meet. Here the love of God, through Jesus, is revealed in time and space; As we share in Christ the feast that frees us: All are welcome, all are welcome, all are welcome in this place. Let us build a house where all are named, their songs and visions heard And loved and treasured, taught and claimed as words within the Word. Built of tears and cries and laughter, prayers of faith and songs of grace, Let this house proclaim from floor to rafter: All are welcome, all are welcome, all are welcome in this place. Today in Children s Church Our Illustrated PowerPoint lesson is from the very ancient narrative in Genesis is traditionally called, The Binding of Isaac. On a Sunday when we are considering what worship means to us, we will see that when this story, was first told about 3,700 years ago, worship was seen in a very different way. Abraham is asked by God to sacrifice his beloved son, Isaac, on the altar as a test of Abraham s faith. The story is symbolic and about an era when the patriarch s children were considered possessions. In today s world, people are no longer possessions. What is your most treasured possession today? There is a saying, History is the lengthened shadow of a great person. This man has cast an enormous shadow. Our book is one attempt to fathom that shadow. (from the Introduction of Troy Perry, Pastor and Prophet by The Reverend Elder Nancy Wilson, 2005) Unabashedly, I consider Troy Perry a saint not in the sense some consider sainthood, a perfect person; but rather, in the sense that he risked his life and his livelihood to follow God s calling, and inspired others to do so. Ten Spiritual Truths for Successful Living for Gays and Lesbians Metropolitan Community Church has been a place where Queer people have been able to rediscover, articulate and live out their spirituality. [. ] The contemporary liberation theologian, Gustavo Gutierrez identifies three stages in the development of a spiritual tradition: (1) a powerful experience that gives insight into the life of the Spirit; (2) reflection on that experience through writing, as well as preaching and teaching; (3) the entrance of those reflections into the larger tradition to be studied, built upon and drawn from. 13 What You Get from Giving: The Paradox of Generosity The paradox of life is that the more you give, the more you get. You find your life by losing it. You win by losing. When you first begin living generously, it feels like everything is coming undone. It s stretching and uncomfortable. But slowly, you begin to realize there s more to life than what you own and can hold onto. You begin to understand true abundance. You start living. My first experience with this upside-down way of living was in college. I had some friends visiting from out of town and had $10 to my name. They were driving cross-country, and I wanted to take care of them. But I was also concerned about blowing my last ten bucks. So I said a prayer, asking for provision, and bought the three of us coffee. Everywhere I looked after that, people were offering me meals for free, giving me stuff, or anonymously leaving money in places where I would find it. It was bizarre and unbelievable. This has now become a way of life for me. While I still struggle with holding on, I m learning that the finer things in life cannot be purchased. They can only be discovered through generosity. Why don t we give? We re scared. We re lazy. We believe the Great Lie: Life is all about you. As a result, we often feel empty. Never satisfied. Always searching. Henry David Thoreau said: Most men lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them. That unsung song is love: radical, reckless, giving love. The more you give your life away, the more you will find it. You ve been lied to. You were told that if you worked hard enough, that if you put enough hours in and got good enough grades that you d be happy, that you d get your reward. And then, you could start living. But face it: something about this just feels wrong. Trust that feeling. There is a longing in your heart, an emptiness in your soul, waiting to be filled. This is not an accident. This exists to remind you that there s something more. It s that nagging feeling that Morpheus put words to in The Matrix: You ve been living in a dream world We must wake up. We must sing the song of love. We must live it with intentionality and audacity. We must be generous. It s not easy, and it doesn t come naturally. But it s how we were created to live. It s the only way, I m quite convinced, that we find the satisfaction we re searching for. While there are legitimate health, business, and psychological benefits to generosity, the most important one is this: it gives your life meaning. Where do we start? Begin small. Here are a few ideas: Make a donation to a nonprofit. [Like Cathedral of Hope!] Allow yourself to be interrupted. Get creative with your generosity, if you re on a limited budget. Volunteer at a local soup kitchen or shelter. Visit a nursing home or hospital and listen to people s stories. Go on a mission trip. Focus on the giving, not the getting. So what are you waiting for? I dare you to be generous. Then and only then may you find these words from Albert Einstein to be true: The value of a man resides in what he gives and not in what he is capable of receiving. Article by Jeff Goins, blogger and author of five books, including The Art of Work and Real Artists Don t Starve. If you would like to share your thoughts about giving, contact Patsy Bjorling, Director of Development, pbjorling@cathedralofhope.com. 11 TRIBUTES Tributes that reach the office by 5 p.m. on Tuesday will be printed in the coming week s bulletin. Spotlight on Ministry Karl Lewis The church I grew up in Arlington had a Deaf mission; that s how I became interested in sign language. I was taught Signed Exact English (SEE) in public school, while also signing more towards American Sign Language (ASL) for an older deaf congregation at church. To this day, my interpreting is a mix of Signed English and ASL. To paraphrase Luke 4:24, A minister is not accepted in his hometown. I was not permitted to interpret sermons in my home church; I was only allowed to sign the music, prayers, and announcements. It wasn t until I came to Cathedral of Hope that I interpreted fully for all parts of the service. In fact, the second time I attended, back in the early 1980s, I was on the interpreter s platform. Since I m also an amateur musician, I see myself strongest when interpreting music. I apply my knowledge of how the music is written and produced to add expression to my interpretation. It s my joy and desire to convey the beauty and emotion I hear in the music to those who might not otherwise be able to participate in it as fully as the hearing congregants. While I was signing for services, conferences, and meetings and experiencing all aspects of the church and its ministries, I felt a desire to do more. I wished to be of further service to others, especially to assist those who have recognized a call towards pastoral ministry. For that reason, I serve on the Committee on Ministry: to stand with and to pray for those who are undergoing the process and the training to discover their call. Karl Lewis has been a member of CoH since March of If this story touches you, and you want to find a ministry in which to serve, contact Anita Haddy, Director of Ministry & Volunteer Development at ahaddy@cathedralofhope.com or X
