Advent is the season in the church during which we await and anticipate the celebration of the birth of Jesus. During this season, we light candles as reminders of the central themes that are held to be true about the coming One, the Messiah, the Christ. We are reimagining Advent throughout this season of Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love. We are asking ourselves to dare to believe that the promises of Emmanuel, God with Us, are not only true, but also essential to our world, if we are ever going to be able to have a taste of heaven here on earth. Last Sunday we reimagined hope and were invited to think of what our world, your world, might look like if we were able to inspire a little hope into it, the kind of hope that Jesus came to earth to proclaim. Hope is more than just a feeling, it is an action which helps make happen something that is desired or planned. Christ came to bring hope, to bring to fruition something that was planned or desired. Today we light the candle of peace and will reimagine peace from the viewpoint of Jesus message of peace. We often define peace as an end of wars and conflict. That is certainly one view and it would be a much better world if all war and conflict came to an end. The Hebrew word for peace is shalom and is often used in reference to an appearance of calm or tranquility. In Greek we find the word eirene which means unity and accord. It was this word that Paul used to describe what he would like to see among the believers in the early church. Jesus speaks of a peace that is much deeper, and perhaps more foundational. He speaks of peace as the spiritual harmony brought about by an individual s restoration and relationship with God. Jesus points toward a personal peace that might just bring about unity and accord, calm and tranquility. I believe that God is involved in, and cares about, our daily lives. I believe that God invested in Jesus to bring a message of peace to a world full of people who were disconnected from God and from one another. Those people, despite their religion, were disillusioned and had lost their personal relationship to the Divine, and were consumed by self and individualism. Perhaps we can learn some lessons this Advent that might help us to re-discover the Jesus of 2000 years ago, and to imagine, or re-imagine, what our lives, our church, our world might look like if we could embrace the peace that was invested in Jesus, as it is invested in us today. Sincerely, in Christ The Reverend Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas Senior Pastor HOPEQuotes I so love Advent at the Cathedral! The shear beauty of the music and the decorations captures my heart every year. And, all the wonderful things this great church does in, and for the community, makes so proud to be a part of it! Dr. Michael Diaz As our nights grow longer and our days grow shorter, we look on these earthly signs candles and green branches and remember God s promise to the world: Christ, our light and our peace, will come. Last Sunday we lit the first candle in the Advent wreath the candle of hope. Today we will light the second candle, the candle of peace. We know full well that peace is elusive, and in some parts of the world, it is almost completely absent. Yet, in this season of Advent, we trust that God is never absent from us. God is always preparing something new. And even where there is war and discord, whether between countries, within families, or within our own hearts, God is present, gently leading us to new possibilities. Let us pray together: Loving God, in this time of preparation and planning, we thank you for the hope and peace you unfailingly offer us. Show us the power of hope. Teach us the peace that comes from justice. Prepare our hearts to be transformed by you, that we may live in the light of Christ. Amen. We light this candle to proclaim the coming of the light of Christ into the world. Come to us, Emmanuel. Fill us with your peace. 1

Therefore the Most High will give them up until the time when she who is in labor has brought forth; then the rest of this ruler s kindred will return to the people of Israel. The Angel Gabriel from Heaven Came (on page 1) Gabriel s Message or The Angel Gabriel from Heaven Came is a Basque Christmas folk carol about the Annunciation the archangel Gabriel announcing to Mary that she would become the mother of Jesus, the Son of God. It quotes the biblical account of that event (Luke 1: 26-38) and Mary s Magnificat (Luke 1: 46-55). The song was collected by Charles Bordes and paraphrased into English by Sabine Baring-Gould. Recording artist Sting, English rock band Marillion, Contemporary Christian band Jars of Clay, and Charlotte Church have helped to introduce the song to a modern audience. Our Prelude this morning is an instrumental arrangement by Anne Krentz Organ, Director of Music Ministries at St. Luke s Lutheran Church in Park Ridge, Illinois. 2

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke. Glory to you, O God. In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin named Mary, who was engaged to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The angel came to Mary and said, Rejoice, highly favored one! God is with you. Blessed are you among women! Mary was much perplexed by these words and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. The angel said to her, Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Promised One of the Most High. God will give to Jesus the throne of his ancestor David. He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his reign there will be no end. Mary said to the angel, How can this be, since I am a virgin? The angel said to her, The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be holy; he will be called Holy One of God. And now, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived; and this is the sixth month for her who was said to be barren. For nothing will be impossible with God. Then Mary said, I am the servant of God. Let it be with me according to your word. Then the angel departed from her. One: All: This is the Gospel of Hope. Praise to you, Creator, Christ and Holy Spirit. 3

And so, with the angels of Bethlehem s skies, and all those who sing of your steadfast love in every time and place, we proclaim your glory, and join in their unending hymn: O Come, O Come, Emmanuel (on page 3) This metrical hymn based on the O antiphons of the medieval church may date from the twelfth century. John Mason Neal translated the original five stanzas of this text beginning Draw nigh, draw nigh, Emmanuel for his Mediaeval Hymns and Sequences (1851). He later altered the first line to the familiar O come, O come. The hymntune, VENI EMMANUEL, was likely derived from phrases of plainsong settings. 7 SANCTUS Words adapted by David Moldenhauer; Music: French Carol Melody, 17 th Century Cathedral of Hope PICARDY WORDS OF INSTITUTION PRAYER OF CONSECRATION INVITATION TO THE FEAST TO OUR GUESTS Cathedral of Hope celebrates an open communion. We understand the sharing of the bread and the cup in Jesus name to be a representation of an ancient vision of God s feast for all peoples. We don t require you to be a member of this church, or any church, to participate with us in this feast of grace. Simply come forward at the ushers direction. After dipping a wafer in the cup, which contains non-alcoholic grape juice, the minister will place it on your tongue and offer a brief blessing. If you prefer to serve yourself, cup your hands in front of you as you come to receive communion. Gluten-free Wafers are available from the silver intinction set at the center point. Please indicate your need to the ushers on the center aisle and they will direct you to the appropriate position. We ask that you serve yourself take a wafer and dip it in the juice in order to avoid cross-contamination by the server. During the serving of Holy Communion, feel free to join in our Music during Communion. Please also be mindful of those around you who are in prayer and meditation. Let There Be Peace on Earth (on page 7) Jill Jackson Miller and Sy Miller wrote the well-known Let There Be Peace on Earth in Jackson later said that she wrote the song after discovering the lifesaving joy of God s peace and unconditional love. The sheet music of the song, published in 1971, included this history: One summer evening in 1955, a group of 180 teenagers of all races and religions, meeting at a workshop high in the California mountains, locked arms, formed a circle and sang a song of peace. They felt that singing the song, with its simple basic sentiment - Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me, helped to create a climate for world peace and understanding. When they came down from the mountain, these inspired young people brought the song with them and started sharing it. And, as though on wings, Let There Be Peace On Earth began an amazing journey around the globe. Let There Be Peace on Earth was awarded the George Washington Honor Medal by the Freedom Foundation at Valley Forge for Outstanding achievement in helping to bring about a better understanding of the American Way of Life. It also received a Brotherhood Award from the National Conference of Christians and Jews. This simple thought, Let there be peace on earth, and let it begin with me first born on a mountain top in the voices of youth, continues to travel heart to heart gathering in people everywhere who wish to become a note in a song of understanding and peace peace for all humankind. 5

Music CCLI License # PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING Advent and the Advent Wreath Advent is a season observed in many Christian churches as a time of expectant waiting and preparation for the celebration of the birth of Jesus at Christmas. The term is a version of the Latin word meaning coming. The term Advent is also used in Eastern Orthodoxy for the 40-day Nativity Fast, which has practices different from those in the west. Advent is the beginning of the western church s liturgical year, and commences on the fourth Sunday before Christmas. The concept of the Advent wreath originated among German Lutherans in the 16th century, but did not take its modern form until the 20th century. As early as the Middle Ages, Christians used fire and light to represent the coming of Christ into the world. This became the basis for the Advent wreath, a sign of the waiting and hopeful expectation of the return in glory of Jesus Christ. The circle represents the eternal victory over death through Jesus. The evergreens are a sign of God s faithfulness, and the lighted candles remind us of the light of Christ brought into the world. 6

At about 1.25 x 1 inch, this keychain, made of solid aluminum in Germany, is compact enough for everyday use. ($7) Who Counts? One sheep makes a difference. Without her something is missing. Now my flock is complete. Oh, no! The man is missing his sheep! The woman is missing her coin! The father is missing his son! Can you help them find what they are looking for? Who Counts? is a creative retelling of three of Jesus most popular parables: the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the prodigal son. As young readers count to help the characters find what s missing, Who Counts? teaches that every one of us counts in God s eyes and that everyone should feel counted. The stories are beautifully illustrated with modern-day characters and a diversity of ethnicities so that all children will be able to see themselves in the stories. Ideal for children ages 4-8. Includes a note for parents and teachers. Eccolo Naturals Decorative Box A Special Gift for a Special Person Each box has a high-gloss lacquer finish and is made using genuine, natural materials like bone, horn, and iridescent mother of pearl. All materials are from non-endangered species and affixed to renewablesource wood bases. Boxes are 4.5 x 6 x 2.5 inches; great size for memo pads, thank you notes, photos, jewelry, bath soaps or playing cards. ($60) Help us keep in contact with you. If you have moved, or changed your phone number or address, please PRINT your new information on the registration pad and we ll update your record. 11

14 Interested in baptism at COH? F or us at Cathedral of Hope, baptism is a sacrament that reminds us that God is still working the lives of those in our community of faith. It is an outward symbol of what God is doing inside us as people of faith. Are you considering being baptized? Or do you have a child you would like baptized? We will be celebrating baptisms again on Sunday, January 14. Please contact Rev. Erin Wyma at ewyma@cathedralofhope.com if you are interested Children, Youth, & Cyber-Safety January 14, 12:30-2 p.m., East Wing, 195 Bullying has reached epidemic proportions in our country, resulting in ruined lives or even suicides in many cases. In our efforts to keep the parents of our children and youth informed about how to handle or prevent this tragedy, we have asked Jetonda Green, LMSW Community Health Outreach Specialist, System SANE Department Safety & Well-Being Prevention Program to lend her expertise on the subject to us on Sunday, January 14. Her mission is to provide parents and their children awareness and prevention education on internet safety, so that they can cultivate and promote healthy norms to prevent sexual abuse as well as family and relationship violence in their communities. Parents will be instructed on how to raise awareness of risks with identity theft and scammers, and of risks when youth are on social media, including cyber-bullying. Parents will be able to identify signs of traffickers who try to recruit online, and become aware of digital dating abuse for older youth. The workshop will last 60 minutes. All parents of both children and youth are welcome to this important, life-saving event. Contact Alan Miles at amiles@cathedralofhope.com with questions. TRIBUTES Tributes that reach the office by 3 p.m. on Monday will be printed in the coming week s bulletin. Tributes that reach the office afterwards will be printed in the following week s bulletin.
