2 WELCOME to Worship! Cathedral of Hope is a vibrant, inclusive, progressive (VIP) congregation of the United Church of Christ. Your presence here is a blessing to us, and we hope you will return often. Cathedral of Hope began in 1970 with a circle of 12 friends, and has since grown into the world s largest liberal Christian church with a primary outreach to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer/questioning people. The VISION of Cathedral of Hope is to be a community of hope proclaiming God s inclusive love, removing barriers to faith and empowering all people to grow in grace toward wholeness. The MISSION of Cathedral of Hope is to reclaim Christianity as a faith of Extravagant Grace, Radical Inclusion and Relentless Compassion. Notes for Newcomers Restrooms are located near the double glass doors behind the Sanctuary. Private restrooms are available off the hall to the right of the Hall of Heroes area. For more information about the church, please come to the Ministry & Visitor s Center located next to Sources of Hope bookstore. Our worship services are recorded for broadcast around the world. We make every effort to respect your privacy. However, if you would like to ensure that you are not seen on screen, please sit in one of the last five rows of pews in the center section. Large-print bulletins and assisted listening systems are available in the bookstore. In consideration of those seated around you, PLEASE, No Flash Photography during the service. PLEASE, Silence Your Cell Phone! Thank you. BlessedAssurance THE WAY FORWARD Good Morning, Cathedral of Hope! Today we continue our post-resurrection sermon series called Blessed Assurance. As those who witnessed the resurrection of Christ testified to others, they came to understand that believing was dangerous business. Many of those early disciples would wonder what would happen to them if they talked about their belief in a Risen Christ. It is hard for us to comprehend what it must have been like so many years ago. We have the freedom to worship and although we know that there are some who disagree with our stand on Jesus radically inclusive message, today Cathedral of Hope lives out its core values and has been joined by thousands of other communities of faith like us. In our reading today, we will hear about the conversion to belief of one of the early persecutors of the church. Saul had not met Jesus while he was alive, but had certainly heard about him. The popularity of Jesus following his death and resurrection had caused concern among the religious peoples, especially among those who had a vested interest in keeping status quo. Saul was determined to track down the disciples and do everything he could to squash this Good News. In the story, the Risen Christ appears to Saul and, through this life-changing encounter, Saul comes to believe. Saul is later known to us as Paul. Paul s encounter with Christ transformed his life. When we meet Jesus in action we cannot help but believe. Our challenge today is to hold on to our faith and to demonstrate the presence of the Risen Christ in our daily lives, through acts of generosity and kindness and through the values that we live into. We are in the business of reclaiming the presence of Christ at a time when others have distorted this image of inclusion making a way forward. May you find hope, healing and a Blessed Assurance today as we worship. Sincerely, in Christ The Reverend Dr. Neil G Cazares-Thomas, Senior Pastor HOPEQuotes My Husband and I attended COH for the 1st time this past Sunday. We attended the 11 AM service and we were totally blown away. I don t know what expectations we came with other than to be fed spiritually BUT WOW did you all go way beyond that. 4 **INVOCATION THE WORD FIRST LESSON Acts 9: 1-6 Darrion Bonner MINISTRY IN MUSIC The Faithful One Words and Music by Chris Eaton and Brian White Sylvia Franze, Donna Jones, and Jason Huff Strings of the Orchestra; Les Holben, pianist I find no hope within to call my own, for I am frail of heart, my strength is gone. But deep within my soul is rising up a song, here in the comfort of the Faithful One. I walk a narrow road through valleys deep in search of higher ground on mountains steep. And though with feet unsure I still keep pressing on, for I am guided by the Faithful One. Faithful, faithful to the end, my true and precious friend. You have been faithful, faithful, so faithful to me. I see your wounded hands, I touch your side. With thorns upon your brow you bled and died. But there s an empty tomb, a love for all who come and give their hearts to you, the Faithful One. Faithful, faithful to the end, my true and precious friend. You have been faithful, faithful, so faithful to me. And when the day is dawned, and when the race is run, I will bow down before God s only Son. And I will lift my hands in praise of all you ve done, and I will worship you, the Faithful One. PASTORAL PRAYER **GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Celtic Alleluia Choir: Alleluia, alleluia! Alleluia, alleluia! 5 **GOSPEL LESSON John 21: One: God be with you. All: And also with you. One: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John. All: Glory to you, O God. Sheila Coughlin When the disciples had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these? Peter said to him, Yes, teacher; you know that I love you. Jesus said to him, Feed my lambs. A second time Jesus asked, Simon, son of John, do you love me? He said to him, Yes, teacher; you know that I love you. Jesus replied, Tend my sheep. Yet a third time Jesus asked, Simon, son of John, do you love me? Peter felt hurt because Jesus said, Do you love me? a third time. So he said, Teacher, you know everything; you know that I love you. Jesus said, Feed my sheep. Very truly, I tell you, when you were younger, you used to fasten your own belt and to go wherever you wished. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will fasten a belt around you and take you where you do not wish to go. (Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God.) Then Jesus said, Follow me. One: All: This is the Gospel of Hope. Praise to you, Creator, Christ and Holy Spirit. **GOSPEL RESPONSE All: Celtic Alleluia Words and Music by Fintan O Carroll and Christopher Walker, adapted Fintan O Carrol and Christopher Walker OneLicense.net License #A SERMON Blessed Assurance Rev. 6 THE EUCHARIST PRESENTATION OF OUR TITHES AND OFFERINGS OFFERTORY Worthy Is the Lamb Words adapted from Revelation 5: 12-13; Music by Benjamin Harlan Sanctuary Choir and Orchestra Worship Note below CELEBRATION OF HOLY COMMUNION WORDS OF INSTITUTION PRAYER OF CONSECRATION INVITATION TO THE FEAST DISTRIBUTION OF THE ELEMENTS TO OUR GUESTS Cathedral of Hope celebrates an open communion. We understand the sharing of the bread and the cup in Jesus name to be a representation of an ancient vision of God s feast for all peoples. We don t require you to be a member of this church, or any church, to participate with us in this feast of grace. Simply come forward at the ushers direction. After dipping a wafer in the cup, the minister will place it on your tongue and offer a brief blessing. If you prefer to serve yourself, cup your hands in front of you as you come to receive communion. Gluten-free Wafers are available from the silver intinction set at the center point. Please indicate your need to the ushers on the center aisle and they will direct you to the appropriate position. We ask that you serve yourself take a wafer and dip it in the juice in order to avoid cross-contamination by the server. MUSIC DURING COMMUNION Hymn of Promise In the bulb there is a flower; in the seed, an apple tree; in cocoons, a hidden promise: butterflies will soon be free! In the cold and snow of winter there s a spring that waits to be, unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see. There s a song in every silence, seeking word and melody; there s a dawn for every darkness, bringing hope to you and me. From the past will come the future; what it holds, a mystery, unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see. In our end is our beginning; in our time, infinity; in our doubt there is believing; in our life, eternity. In our death, a resurrection; at the last, a victory, unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see. Worship Note on p. 5 Words and Music by Natalie Sleeth Hope Publishing Company OneLicense.net License#A Worthy Is the Lamb The words of Revelation 5: have inspired many songs and choral works, from the majestic movement at the end of Handel s Messiah, to the contemporary praise and worship song by Darlene Zschech and Hillsong. Today s Offertory is a setting of this text by Dr. Benjamin Harlan, Dean of the School of Church Music at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth. A widely published arranger and composer, Harlan s choral, keyboard and handbell works are included in the catalogs of a number of major publishers. Beginning with a lyric melody sung by sopranos and altos, Harlan s Worthy Is the Lamb then repeats the simple refrain in harmony before moving into a more declamatory section using the words of verse 13. The piece ends with a powerful restatement of the opening theme in a higher key, building to a dramatic end. Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength, power and glory and blessing. And every creature which is in heaven and on the earth and in the sea, saying, Blessing and honor and glory and power be to the one that sitteth on the throne forever and ever. 4

Mountains bow down and the seas will roar at the sound of your name. Originally published as a choral anthem entitled Hymn of Promise, the words and music are by Natalie Sleeth ( ). Married to Rondald E. Sleeth, a United Methodist Pastor and professor of homiletics at Perkins School of Theology, SMU, Natalie Sleeth served as music secretary at Highland Park United Methodist Church from Sleeth was best known for her anthems for children s choirs. She had a gift for composing texts on complex theological ideas that were still accessible to children. This hymn was written at a time when the author was pondering the ideas of life, death, spring and winter, Good Friday and Easter, and the whole reawakening of the world that happens every spring. Inspired by a T.S. Eliot line, the germ of the hymn grew from the idea in our end is our beginning, the phrase that begins the third verse. 5

9 News BRIEFS April 10, 2016 Earth Month at Cathedral of Hope April has been designated as Earth Month here at Cathedral of Hope. A variety of activities and events are being planned to raise awareness of greening our environment, and the entire congregation is invited to participate. Our goal is to use this April as a kick-off month for ongoing greening efforts both for our church community and our personal lives. We want greening to become a routine good habit we pursue every day, not just one in a series of church events with a beginning and ending date. Earth Month: Endangered Species of the Week TODAY is Frog and Axolotl Day! Each Sunday during April s CoH Earth Month Celebration, our Children s Ministry will have an information table featuring issues and solutions about one of the endangered species we studied during Lent. Today is Frog and Axolotl Day! We are quite familiar with frogs, but what about axolotls? Both are endangered. The frogs are disappearing through the pollution of their habitats and the axolotl, a Mexican salamander, is already extinct in the wild, but preserved in captivity. Find out why each of these creatures is vital to our environment. Understanding and Responding to Dementia-Related Behavior THIS Wednesday, April 13, 5:30 p.m. Cathedral of Hope, in collaboration with Alzheimer s Association-Greater Dallas Chapter, offers a monthly lecture series to bring greater awareness to our community about the disease and also to provide support for individuals with Alzheimer s disease or related dementia and their care partners. Lectures will be offered on the second Wednesday of each month. There will be refreshments and a time of gathering at 5:30 p.m. with the one-hour lecture beginning promptly at 6 p.m. The next lecture, Understanding and Responding to Dementia-Related Behavior, will be presented by Dr. Chafetz on Wednesday evening, April 13, in the Congregational Life Center (CLC) Chapel. In addition, CoH will be hosting an Alzheimer s Support Group on the second Saturday of each month at 10 a.m. in CLC 106. For more about these collaborative programs, please contact Rev. Todd Scoggins at tscoggins@cathedralofhope.com or Brian Parman at bparman@ccyoung.org. 7 Earth Month: Movie Night April 22, 2016 Fellowship Hall 6 to 9 p.m. Join the CoH Green Team as we continue our Earth Month events with a screening of the award winning documentary feature film Trashed. Nominated for the Camera D Or at Cannes Film Festival, it follows Oscar-winning actor Jeremy Irons as he investigates the shocking global scale and devastating impact of humanity s modern waste. For all the poisonous truths in Trashed there are also solid grass root solutions...crucial viewing for realists and alarmists both. (New York Daily News) Earth Month: Religion & Environmentalism Forum Saturday, April 23, Fellowship Hall, 10 a.m. 12 p.m. Through this forum, diverse panelists will have the opportunity to share their perspectives about Religion and Environmentalism. We will explore questions such as: What is the role of organized religion in protecting the planet? What do people of faith have to say about this critical subject? What is our role as Christians? What can we do now? Panelists include: Green Dallas (Dallas Zero Waste Division); Dan Peeler, the Secular Order of St. Francis and St. Clare (Cathedral of Hope); Rev. Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas, Senior Pastor (Cathedral of Hope}; and Dr. Melanie Harris, Associate Professor of Religion and Environmental Ethics, (Texas Christian University). Please join us for a time of spiritual and environmental growth! Earth Month: Garden Meditations April 1 through April 30 As part of Earth Month here at Cathedral of Hope, Garden Meditations are daily meditations/prayer focusing on our relationship with the Earth and reflecting on their meaning in the context of the love of God. Each day of the month, Garden Meditations (in both English and Spanish) will be posted in the St. Francis Peace Garden (next to the John Thomas Bell Wall, a national AIDS memorial) and in Lee s Garden (next to the Interfaith Peace Chapel), so that those who wish may stop by and spend time in meditation. Links to the meditations may also be found on the Earth Month calendar on the CoH website, so folks who do not live in the DFW Metroplex can participate as well.

Saul has an upsetting vision. Dan Peeler, Minister for Children & Families, and Charlie Rose create beautiful illustrations for use in the Children s Church PowerPoint lessons. Today in Children s Church We will discuss Saul s Conversion. Saul, who would later be known as Paul, believed his way of worshipping God was the only way and arrested the followers of Jesus who worshipped in a different way. People traveled often on horses in those days and artists throughout history have traditionally pictured Saul on a horse. Saul might have fallen to the ground when he and his horse were frightened by the bright light as he heard a voice that told him, I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. We ll learn that persecute means to treat very badly. Jesus didn t scold Saul for what he did, but instead told him where he should go to learn how to live a better life. As an introduction to Saul s conversion, we will see another conversion story, this one about the Ethiopian official who was baptized by Philip, one of Jesus followers. We will discover that all changed lives are equally important to God. Introducing This Spring we are introducing a new fundraising initiative that will benefit both the Cathedral and YOU. Silent Auction Setup Saturday, May 14, Hilton Anatole, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Would you like to help one of our community partners with their special event? AIDS Interfaith Network s BLOOMIN BALL takes place on Saturday, May 14 at the Hilton Anatole. We want to provide a group of CoH volunteers to help them setup for the silent auction, prior to the event. This is a great opportunity to meet new people and help with a worthy cause. See Rev. Neil on p. 8. Keyword: AUCTION What is the Advancement Office function? The Advancement Office reports directly to the Senior Pastor and is associated with the Advancement Committee of the Board of Stewards and with the Communication and Program Teams on staff. The primary purpose of the office is to be the fundraising arm of the Church so that the Congregation is not solely dependent upon tithes and offerings at worship services. Stewardship is critical, and so is the identification, cultivation and solicitation of major gifts to address deferred maintenance and capital improvement, and large ticket items in general. The office is also responsible for the oversight of any Capital Campaign as well as Endowment growth to ensure the Cathedral s ministries for members that are not yet born. Please feel free to contact Bob Shea with any inquiries or suggestions at bshea@cathedralofhope.com. Go to Disney with the Youth! The CoH Youth Ministry is planning to attend the 2016 UCC National Youth Event (NYE), July 26-July 30 in Buena Vista, Florida and we want you to experience this event through the eyes of our Youth. NYE is a three day conference filled with educational and mission programs designed to develop leadership skills within our community and the world for Youth. More than 4,000 UCC and Disciples of Christ youth from around the country are expected to attend this spirit-filled event. We want you to have the opportunity to share this experience with our youth by sponsoring one of the CoH attendees. Sponsorship is just $325 and will include pictures and videos of the youth and a Flat Stanley version of you (like Rev. Neil in photo) during the trip. We have twelve youth and adults who need sponsorships. Your sponsorship will allow you to participate virtually in this fun and life changing experience, as well as investing in the future leadership of CoH. To support our youth, please contact Bob Shea, Interim Advancement Director at bshea@cathedralofhope.com because you do not want to miss this chance to Go to Disney with the Youth.
