Large-print bulletins and assisted listening systems are available in the bookstore. In consideration of those seated around you, PLEASE, No Flash Photography during the service. PLEASE, Silence Your Cell Phone! Thank you. Reclaiming Miracles: You Touched Me Good Morning, Cathedral of Hope United Church of Christ! Over and over again we hear witness of the way that Jesus demonstrated his unique relationship with God. The writers of the Gospels share their personal experience of how Jesus would step into what we might think of as ordinary situations and do something that would turn people s lives around. What we might consider ordinary by today s standards were anything but ordinary in the day and culture of Jesus. Today s miracle focuses on the courage of a woman who came through the crowd to find Jesus, believing that, if she could but touch him, she would be healed and she was not disappointed. On the surface, knowing Jesus, this seems just another one of those transforming moments, but, by her actions, the woman, who remains unnamed, transformed both her own life and the lives of those who surrounded her. As we continue to reclaim the miracles of Jesus, we also reclaim the miracles of our own lives, living into the abundance that God provided for those first century believers and the abundance that God invites us into, as we are transformed by God s healing, extravagant grace. It is about this abundance that we have come to know more through this sermon series, realizing that there is always more to life, more to the story, than meets the eye. I pray that today we might all be bold enough, like the woman in our story, to come through the crowd and to trust the grace of God that is more than enough for us all. I pray that we will come forward, in our own way, to touch the hem of Jesus garment and find what we are looking for. The invitation has been extended and it is for us to decide if we are ready, willing, and able to trust the Good News, and to live into the radical invitation to let go and let God ; to find the joy of living in the unexplainable, yet unimaginable, freedom that comes when we put our trust in God. Again, I sincerely hope that you will find a deeper meaning and relevance in our services today and pray that we will open our hearts, our minds and our souls to the fresh breath of air, the Holy presence of God that is still in the miracle business. Sincerely, in Christ The Reverend Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas Senior Pastor HOPEQuotes My gratitude and deep appreciation for your inspired sermons and prayers! As my work travel takes me far and wide, our television ministry keeps me close to my spiritual home and how I love being at home! Thank you to everyone who makes this service possible! 3 ORDER of WORSHIP May 28, & 11 a.m. 7th Sunday of EASTER GATHERING PRELUDE GATHERING OF THE COMMUNITY **EXCHANGE OF PEACE **PROCESSIONAL HYMN Surely the Presence Music by Lanny Wolfe; arr. Jeff Anderson Cathedral of Hope Orchestra There s a Wideness in God s Mercy Rev. Dr. Michael Diaz Rev. Erin Wyma WORSHIP NOTES Insight into the various elements of our services Surely the Presence The praise and worship chorus, Surely the Presence of the Lord, was spontaneously composed by Lanny Wolfe as his trio, the Lanny Wolfe Trio, prepared to sing for a church dedication in Columbia, Mississippi. Lanny says that the song s words came quickly, such that he didn t have the chance to run through any chords or even tell his fellow musicians what had popped into his head. So, he taught it to them the same moment the assembled church members heard it. The Cathedral of Hope Orchestra opens our services today with an arrangement of this familiar chorus by Jeff Anderson. There s a Wideness in God s Mercy Frederick William Faber ( ) wrote the words of this hymn as part of a larger, thirteen-stanza poem entitled Come to Jesus. Faber wrote his poems for private devotional use by other Roman Catholics, never intending for them to be sung in corporate worship. The hymntune BEACH SPRING may have been written or adapted by Benjamin Franklin White ( ). It was first found in a tunebook called The Sacred Harp (1844), which White edited with Elisha James King. This book contained tunes collected from the southern United States. White was the youngest of fourteen children and had Words by Frederick W. 4 **INVOCATION Rev. Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas CHILDREN S MOMENT (11 A.M.) THE WORD MODERN LESSON from Year of Miracles by Marianne Williamson Lee McLeod How often do I not notice the miracles all around me, or honor all the kindnesses shown me, or allow myself to fully embrace the good that s in my life? Today I remember that every day is precious, every heart carries within it the spirit of God, and every event contains the platform for a miracle. May the days be gone when I took for granted all the blessings in my life. May my eyes be open, that I might see more beauty; may my ears be open, that I might hear my truth; may my spirit be open, that I might feel the tender touch of God. 5 **GOSPEL LESSON Luke 8: One: God be with you. All: And also with you. One: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke. All: Glory to you, O God. Now there was a woman who had been suffering from hemorrhages for twelve years; and though she had spent all she had on physicians, no one could cure her. She came up behind Jesus and touched the fringe of his clothes, and immediately her hemorrhage stopped. Then Jesus asked, Who touched me? When all denied it, Peter said, Teacher, the crowds surround you and press in on you. But Jesus said, Someone touched me; for I noticed that power had gone out from me. When the woman saw that she could not remain hidden, she came trembling; and falling down before him, she declared in the presence of all the people why she had touched him, and how she had been immediately healed. He said to her, Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace. One: All: This is the Gospel of Hope. Praise to you, Creator, Christ and Holy Spirit. **GOSPEL RESPONSE All: Celtic Alleluia Words and Music by Fintan O Carroll and Christopher Walker, adapted Fintan O Carroll and Christopher Walker OneLicense.net License #A SERMON Reclaiming Miracles: Rev. Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas You Touched Me Continued from p.1 fourteen children of his own. A self-taught musician, he traveled the southern United States as a singing-school teacher. He and his brother-in-law William Walker, editor of Southern Harmony, Collected hymns together. Nearer, My God, to Thee Sarah Flower Adams submitted this original hymn with 12 others to William Johnson Fox for his Hymns and Anthem (1841), compiled for the use of his congregation at Finsbury, England. Based on the story of Jacob at Bethel (Genesis 28: 10-22), this hymn was at one time a cause of great concern because the name of Christ did not appear in it. Lowell Mason composed the tune BETHANY for Nearer, My God, to Thee in 1856, and the hymns popularity in America is usually credited to the tune. The story of the singing of Nearer, My God, to Thee by the passengers of the English ship Titanic in 1912 has become legendary. Composer Dan Forrest s beautiful arrangement combines soaring voices, piano arpeggios and cello obbligato, to form an exquisite choral prayer. 3

6 THE EUCHARIST PRESENTATION OF OUR TITHES AND OFFERINGS OFFERTORY I Will Sing of Thy Great Mercies from St. Paul by Felix Mendelssohn ( ) Arielle Collier, soprano Cathedral of Hope Orchestra I will sing of thy great mercies, O Lord, and of thy faithfulness evermore. Psalm 89: 1 See Text-to-Give Below CELEBRATION OF HOLY COMMUNION INVITATION TO THE TABLE One: All: The Gospel writers tell of our risen Savior, who at table with two of the disciples took bread and blessed and broke it and gave it to them. Their eyes were opened and they recognized the risen Christ in the breaking of the bread. In company with all believers in every time and beyond time, we come to this table to know the risen Christ in the breaking of the bread. CONSECRATION OF THE ELEMENTS One: All: One: All: One: All: On the night you were betrayed you took the bread; after giving thanks you broke it and said: This is my body, broken for you, and as you eat it remember me. This is my body, broken for you, and as you eat it remember me. On the night you were betrayed you held the cup; after giving thanks you lifted it up. This is my life poured out for you, and as you drink it remember me. This is my life poured out for you, and as you drink it remember me. So we thank you for the cup and for the bread; for we see the life you gave and the blood you shed. And we remember your wondrous love, you gave your body, you shed your blood. And we remember your wondrous love, you gave your Spirit to live in us. And we remember your wondrous love, you gave your body, you shed your blood. And we remember your wondrous love, you gave your Spirit to live in us. DISTRIBUTION OF THE ELEMENTS TO OUR GUESTS Cathedral of Hope celebrates an open communion. After dipping a wafer in the cup, which contains non-alcoholic grape juice, the minister will place it on your tongue and offer a brief blessing. 7 MUSIC DURING COMMUNION TO OUR GUESTS It has become a tradition at the Cathedral of Hope to rise as we end our time of communion (as indicated by **), join hands as an expression of our unity in Christ, and lift them up in glory to God. We invite you to join as you are able, in body or spirit. Hymn of Promise In the bulb there is a flower; in the seed, an apple tree; in cocoons, a hidden promise: butterflies will soon be free! In the cold and snow of winter there s a spring that waits to be, unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see. There s a song in every silence, seeking word and melody; there s a dawn for every darkness, bringing hope to you and me. From the past will come the future; what it holds, a mystery, unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see. In our end is our beginning; in our time, infinity; in our doubt there is believing; in our life, eternity. In our death, a resurrection; at the last, a victory, unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see. Above All Above all powers, above all things, above all nature and all that we can see; Above all wisdom and all our self-made plans, you were there before the world began. Above all dominions, above all thrones, above all wonders the world has ever known; Above all wealth and treasures of the earth, there s no way to measure what You re worth. 10 News BRIEFS May 28, 2017 Memorial Day Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the people who died while serving in the country s armed forces. The holiday, which is currently observed every year on the last Monday of May, originated as Decoration Day after the American Civil War in 1868, when the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union veterans founded in Decatur, Illinois, established it as a time for the nation to decorate the graves of the Union war dead with flowers. By the 20th century, competing Union and Confederate holiday traditions, celebrated on different days, had merged, and Memorial Day eventually extended to honor all Americans who died while in the military service. It marks the start of the unofficial summer vacation season, while Labor Day marks its end. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials, particularly to honor those who have died in military service. Many volunteers place an American flag on each grave in national cemeteries. Annual Decoration Days for particular cemeteries are held on a Sunday in late spring or early summer in some rural areas of the American South, notably in the mountain areas. In cases involving a family graveyard where remote ancestors as well as those who were deceased more recently are buried, this may take on the character of an extended family reunion to which some people travel hundreds of miles. People gather on the designated day and put flowers on graves and renew contacts with relatives and others. There often is a religious service and a picnic-like dinner on the grounds, the traditional term for a potluck meal at a church. It is believed that this practice began before the American Civil War and thus may reflect the real origin of the memorial day idea. Memorial Day is not to be confused with Veterans Day; Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving, while Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans. 11 Today in Children s Church It isn t surprising that this week s Miracle story comes from Luke s Gospel, since we find so many stories about significant women in his writings. It s about a woman who had suffered for twelve years with constant bleeding. She could find no cure. But after she touched the fringe of Jesus robe, immediately, the bleeding stopped. Jesus felt his healing power transfer to the woman and asked, Who Touched me? The trembling woman fell on her knees before him. He explained to her that the robe was not magic. Her own faith had made her well. Contact Dan Peeler at dpeeler@cathedralofhope.com if you have any questions about the Children and Families Ministry. Who Touched Me? Something Rotten, Musical Night CoH is again partnering with the AT&T Performing Arts Center (ATTPAC) to offer discount group tickets for the Tony Award-winning musical Something Rotten. The year is 1595, and struggling playwrights Nigel and Nick Bottom are planning on taking Shakespeare down a peg or two. Their idea? To conjure up the one type of show that s outside of The Bard s wheelhouse - the musical! An uproariously irreverent and meta portrait of the Renaissance, Something Rotten! tracks the Brothers shaky progress while gleefully parodying The Great White Way s greatest hits along the way, riffing on everything from Phantom of the Opera to Les Miserables. A representative from ATTPAC will be here in the narthex after the 9 and 11 a.m. services today only to help you purchase your tickets for our special discounted CoH night (Tuesday, June 20, 7:30 p.m.). If you have any questions, please contact Paul at pkolasci@cathedralofhope.com. 9 To Seek and Save (Steve Gosling will sign his book following both worship services next Sunday, June 4) Written in a narrative style, To Seek and Save is applicable as an introduction to Luke s Gospel, a teacher s study guide, or simply a resource for discovering this unique perspective of Jesus life and His Message. [Author Steve] Gosling offers inspiration to his writing of this commentary on the Book of Luke. Drawing from Biblical commentaries and other writers he adds the inspiration of the Holy Spirit as he brings together his thoughts into an easy to read and understand commentary. This book is made available to anyone who just wants to dive in a little deeper and grasp a better understanding for themselves always allowing the God who is still speaking to speak again, and again as the Holy Spirit guides personal study and interpretation. I pray that anyone who reads it will open themselves up, like Steve to what the Spirit was saying through Luke and how we might make that relevant today. --The Reverend Dr. Neil G. The musical begins with playwright J.M. Barrie struggling to find inspiration, until he meets four young brothers and their beautiful widowed mother. Spellbound by the boys enchanting make-believe adventures, he sets out to write a play that will astound London theatergoers. With a little bit of pixie dust and a lot of faith, Barrie takes this monumental leap, leaving his old world behind for Neverland where nothing is impossible and the wonder of childhood lasts forever. The magic of Barrie s classic tale springs spectacularly to life in this heartwarming theatrical event that NPR calls far and away the best musical of the year! A representative from ATTPAC will be here in the narthex after the 9 and 11 a.m. services the next two Sundays (June 4 & 11) to help you purchase your tickets for our special discounted CoH night (Tuesday, July 18, 7:30 p.m.). My Journey of Living and Giving: J.W. Wylie s Thoughts First Steps: Life Affects Church My church attendance, as an adult, was a direct result of what was happening in my life. I wouldn t go to church because I might have been out too late the night before, it was raining Sunday morning, or the game started at 11:00. My giving was the same way. I never planned my giving before the plates were passed. If I happened to have a couple of dollars, great. If not, oh well. After a while, my attendance became more consistent. I would make it to church a couple of times a month. I even began planning how much cash I would take with me. I continued to feel blessed after listening to the sermon and music, and I met some very nice people. I began to consider some volunteering opportunities. Next Steps: Church Affects Life I don t know when it happened, but all of a sudden, church began influencing my life. I would plan weekend activities around early church on Sundays. I became interested in giving some of my time to the work of the church. So, I became a member, and soon was involved with ministries, such as Greeters, Ushers, People Helping People (Home Renovation), and Children s Sunday School. My tithing evolved as well. Now I wrote the check at the beginning of every month (because I learned that the money was gone by the end). I even filled out a pledge card. As my family of church friends grew, my volunteering and tithing grew as well. Church attendance was now an integral part of my life. I joined a Circle, did book studies, and began helping at icare. I even served on the Board of Stewards. During this time, I also became an Auto-Giver. I would give extra for Maple Lawn, Anniversary, Capital Campaigns, and other events and causes Cathedral of Hope was supporting. This has been quite a journey for me, and I m not done yet. Cathedral of Hope has changed me, and will continue to change me. I m excited about my future in this church and the church s future in the world. What the Youth are Learning this Week If there is only one God, why are there so many different religions? religion is a system by which a particular group of people understands A and organizes its followers experience of God. Because the major religions (Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism) have been around a long time, they also come with lots of history, tradition, and ritual. And, to be honest, some of that history isn t so pretty. But that history can also be beautiful and life-giving. There are two common responses to the fact that there are so many religions in the world. One is to ignore the other religions and to live around other people who share the same belief system that you do. The other is to reduce the potency of your own beliefs and claim that all religions are different and equally valid paths to the same God. But the most difficult path is to maintain the distinctive beliefs, traditions, and history of your religion, while at the same time being respectful to other religions and open to the truth that lies in them. A primary message of God in the Hebrew Scriptures is hospitality. A primary message of Jesus was to reach out to those who are not like you. While we believe Christianity to be true, we observe God s hospitality when we respect the religions of all people. Conversation starters to talk with your youth about this topic: What other religions do you see or know are represented in the students at your school? How do you see their beliefs impact or influence their actions? How do your beliefs impact your actions? How might you respond if someone asked you why there are so many different religions? What would you say to someone who questions your choice of religion? Contact Alan at awomack@cathedralofhope.com with questions.
