2 Welcome to Cathedral of Hope! What began in 1970 as a circle of 12 friends meeting weekly for worship and fellowship has grown into Cathedral of Hope, a Vibrant, Inclusive, Progressive (VIP) congregation of the United Church of Christ. Founded in and serving beyond the LGBTQ community, our mission is to reclaim Christianity as a faith of extravagant grace, radical inclusion, and relentless compassion by being a people of hope proclaiming God s inclusive love, removing barriers to faith, and empowering all to grow in grace toward wholeness. If you are visiting Cathedral of Hope for the first time, we are glad to have you here, are blessed by your presence, and hope you will return often! If there is anything we can do to make your visit more enjoyable, please call on our Ushers to assist you. You re invited to use the restroom that corresponds with your gender identity or the restroom that is the safest and most comfortable for you. Gendered, multipleoccupancy restrooms are located near the double glass doors behind the Sanctuary. All-gender, single-occupancy restrooms are available off the hall to the right of the Hall of Heroes area. For more information about the church, please come to the Connect Center located next to Sources of Hope. Large-print bulletins and assisted listening systems are available in the bookstore. Neil s NOTE Good Morning, Cathedral of Hope United Church of Christ! These past few weeks we have used our sermon series The Open Door to focus on the stages of spiritual growth and the exploration of our personal journey of faith to which the season of Lent calls us. It all began with an invitation to open our hearts and begin a spiritual journey that would hopefully deepen our personal experience of God in our lives. For some of us that meant trusting God, either again or for the first time, or getting past some experience that may have caused us to move away from a spiritual life. Journeying from that place, we come today to stand on the threshold of the door and to surrender to a transformational moment that can propel us into greater understanding and deeper experience of a God who desires only good things for each one of us. This threshold is a place to pause, even stop, and again make the decision to take the next step, opening the door of our lives even more fully. Today is also Transgender Day of Visibility. Those of us who are regulars here at Cathedral of Hope have witnessed the transformation that many of our transgender siblings experience and share with us. Transformation is not only something that happens on the inside, it is very much something that is experienced, sometimes physically, just as it was by Jesus on Transfiguration Sunday or on the journey that many of his disciples took following the events of Holy Week, Easter, and Resurrection. Our transformation is evidenced in the way we live, think, and understand the world. It is seen through new eyes that ultimately, as Jesus did, see the world with compassion and kindness, love and grace. We stand together on the threshold today and ask ourselves whether we are ready to take stock of our own lives and let go of the things and behaviors that no longer serve us or are un-christlike. Are we ready to move in our journey toward greater freedom and spiritual growth that will continue the work of Christ, to make this earth a little more like God s heaven? Are we ready to step off the threshold and move through the door, finding beyond it a life of abundance? These are the questions that we will explore today, and in the coming weeks, as we strive to live more fully into the Easter message. Blessings, IMPORTANT INFO Connect Center If you are joining us for the first time, stop by the Info Bar in the Connect Center to meet and greet with volunteers and staff, and to pick up a special gift from us to you. 4 **INVOCATION GATHERING OF THE COMMUNITY **EXCHANGE OF PEACE Candace Thompson Rev. Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas Rev. Dr. Michael Diaz CHILDREN S MOMENT LITURGY OF THE WORD MODERN LESSON from Open the Door by Joyce Rupp A threshold contains the power of transformation. In this place of uncertainty and decision making, we are forced to slow down and take stock of what s happening. This is where we yield to the necessary gestation that grows us into greater freedom. During this time we let go of old ego ways we formerly relied upon to defend us from insecurity or facilitate resistance. All one s energy must be given to the process that readies us for the next tentative step of development. RITE OF RECONCILIATION KYRIE Kyrie Eleison Music by Dan and Heidi Goeller Sanctuary Choir and Orchestra Sung in Greek; translation: Lord, have mercy. CONFESSION One: All: One: All: It is in our confession that we realize our hope to be more like Christ and our need for God s mercy. It is in admitting the truth of our lives that we open the door to this journey and take the first steps toward wholeness and healing. God, help us to see the truth of ourselves and of you. God of all the saints, God of all the sinners, hear our prayer. We would be saint-like: holy, good patient, loving. But we end up feeling more like sinners: full of failures of morality in both words and deeds. Perhaps you see us simply as human: as beloved, and flawed, and trying, and failing, and succeeding. God, we ask that you bless the good we have accomplished and also forgive the wrong that we have done. Have mercy on us, open our hearts and change our lives. Silence for Personal Reflection WORDS OF ASSURANCE One: All: Siblings in Christ, hear this Good News: the love of God is beyond measure, and you are included in that love. Know that you are forgiven and thus freed to love and serve. Amen. 2

On the way they entered a village of the Samaritans to make ready for him; but the Samaritans did not receive Jesus, because his face was set toward Jerusalem. 7 Words by Ragan Cortney; Music by Buryl Red OneLicense.net License # A RED DISTRIBUTION OF THE ELEMENTS TO OUR GUESTS Cathedral of Hope celebrates an open communion. We understand the sharing of the bread and the cup in Jesus name to be a representation of an ancient vision of God s feast for all peoples. We don t require you to be a member of this church, or any church, to participate with us in this feast of grace. Simply come forward at the ushers direction. After dipping a wafer in the cup, which contains non-alcoholic grape juice, the minister will place it on your tongue and offer a brief blessing. If you prefer to serve yourself, cup your hands in front of you as you come to receive communion. Gluten-free Wafers are available from the silver intinction set at the center point. Please indicate your need to the ushers on the center aisle and they will direct you to the appropriate position. We ask that you serve yourself take a wafer and dip it in the juice in order to avoid cross-contamination by the server. During the serving of Holy Communion, feel free to join in our Music during Communion. Please also be mindful of those around you who are in prayer and meditation. 5

10 This is a series of articles prepared by the Music and Worship Team to give insight and background into musical elements of our services. In this exquisite Anthem, Diane Sheets has taken the Fanny Crosby hymn text and set it to new music in a contemporary ballad style. Arranger Gary Rhodes uses suspensions to create tension and release that is beautiful to hear and sing. The original hymn, I Am Thine, O Lord, is one of many written by Fanny Crosby, a prolific American hymn writer. It has been reported that Crosby, though blind, had a sunset described to her in words before writing these lyrics: Standing at the Future s Threshold Paul R. Gregory ( ) wrote this hymn for the final service of the 175th anniversary meeting of the United Church Board for World Ministries, held in The text serves as a reminder of the work still needed to be done to heal the world, and as a call to continue in that mission. Gregory was ordained as a minister of the United Church of Christ in He served as East and Southeast Asia secretary of the United Church Board for World Ministries from 1957, when the denomination was formed, until his retirement in It is paired with the hymn tune EBENEZER. Thomas John Williams ( ) included this melody as part of an anthem he composed around 1890, Golen yn y glyn ( Light in the Valley ). Called EBENEZER for a chapel he attended, the tune is alternately known as TON-Y-BOTEL (Welsh for tone in a bottle ), after a fanciful but untrue story that it washed ashore in a bottle. Concerto for Two Violins in D Minor The Concerto for Two Violins in D minor, BWV 1043, also known as the Double Violin Concerto, is one of the most famous works by Johann Sebastian Bach ( ) and considered among the best examples of the music of the late Baroque period. The solo violin parts of this concerto have survived in Bach s own handwriting, dating from around The middle movement of three, Largo ma non tanto, (slow, but not too much), is a dreamy siciliano in the key of F. The two solo violin parts intertwine lovingly above a simple accompaniment of chords. WORSHIP NOTES Draw Me Nearer I am thine, O Lord, I have heard thy voice, and it told thy love to me. But I long to rise in the arms of faith and be closer drawn to thee. Draw me nearer to the cross where thou hast died. Draw me nearer to thy precious bleeding side. Draw me nearer. 8 TRIBUTES Tributes that reach the office by 3 p.m. on Monday will be printed in the coming week s bulletin. His healing of a man born blind was of special interest to a pressure group of priests who were jealous of his authority. STAFF * Rev. Dr. Neil G.
