PLEASE, Silence Your Cell Phone! Thank you. CoH SUNDAY Worship Sinning Like a Christian: ENVY Good Morning, Cathedral of Hope United Church of Christ! Some might be surprised that we are talking about the seven deadly sins! However, as people of faith, committed to spiritual growth, we have come to understand that we must each, individually, examine our own lives. We must take time to think about the parts of our lives that we need to change. Last week we spoke about anger and the need to channel the energy that often comes with anger into good. We were reminded that righteous anger can call us to right the injustices that we see around us moving us toward a world that God intended. Today we move on to look at the deadly sin of envy as well as its virtue, kindness. Envy can be described as the need to have or to be better than others. This could also be called covetousness, and is warned against as it brings on jealousy. This can often be a destructive emotion in our lives. According to Mary C Lambia, Ph.D., Envy has to do with feeling unhappy about the success of someone else, or about what they have and, at the same time, secretly feeling inferior yourself. Instead of finding success for yourself or improving yourself, you may be envious and want what another person has or find yourself wishing that the other person would lose that quality or possession in order to make things seem fair. One of the blessings that we can ignore when envy or jealousy find their way into our experience is knowing and enjoying who and what we are, which is sufficient. We are not called to be anyone else but ourselves. Now, this does not mean that we cannot, or should not, strive to achieve more or to be more, but focusing on someone else, rather than ourselves, with envy, prevents us from living in the present and enjoying the blessings of our own lives. It shifts our focus from who and what we are called to be. Envy short-changes us and can destroy us eating away at our inmost being, measuring ourselves against someone else and their achievements. Today, I hope that we turn our envy of others into kindness toward ourselves as well as others around us; that we can share the blessings that others have received without turning this inward, into envy, which can eat away at us and cause untold damage to our souls. Sincerely, in Christ The Reverend Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas Senior Pastor HOPEQuotes As a member of CoH and the President of Transgender Veterans Support Group (TVSG) National and Texas Chapters, I want to Thank You on behalf of over 3,000 TVSG members and our supporters, for your support of the Transgender Community and Transgender Veterans. 3 ORDER of WORSHIP August 20, & 11 a.m. 11th SUNDAY After Pentecost LITURGY OF PREPARATION PRELUDE CALL TO WORSHIP **PROCESSIONAL HYMN Amazing Grace arr. Daniel Kallman Katrina Kratzer and Thane Elliot, violins Les Holben, piano God of Grace and God of Glory Rev. Andria Davis Worship Note on p. 4 Words by Harry Emerson Fosdick, adapted Music by John Hughes OneLicense.net License #A **The people will rise in body or spirit. CWM RHONDDA WORSHIP NOTES Insight into the various musical elements of our services Amazing Grace Amazing Grace is a Christian hymn published in 1779, with words written by the English poet and clergyman John Newton ( ). Newton wrote the words from personal experience. He grew up without any particular religious conviction, but his life s path was formed by a variety of twists and coincidences that were often put into motion by his recalcitrant insubordination. He was pressed into service in the Royal Navy, and after leaving the service, he became involved in the Atlantic slave trade. In 1748, a violent storm battered his vessel so severely that he called out to God for mercy, a moment that marked his spiritual conversion. With the message that forgiveness and redemption are possible regardless of sins committed and that the soul can be delivered from despair through the mercy of God, Amazing Grace is one of the most recognizable songs in the Englishspeaking world. The arrangement used this morning is by Daniel Kallman. Kallman s compositions for orchestra, winds, and choir are widely published and have been performed across North America, Europe and East Asia. His steady stream of commissions also includes music for worship, theater and dance. 1
4 **INVOCATION GATHERING OF THE COMMUNITY **EXCHANGE OF PEACE Rev. Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas Rev. Dr. Michael Diaz LITURGY OF THE WORD HEBREW LESSON Genesis 4: 1-8 Adam and Eve knew each other, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying, I have produced a child with the help of God. Next she bore his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, and Cain a tiller of the ground. In the course of time Cain brought to God an offering of the fruit of the ground, and Abel for his part brought of the firstlings of his flock, their fat portions. And God had regard for Abel and his offering, but for Cain and his offering God had no regard. So Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell. God said to Cain, Why are you angry, and why has your countenance fallen? If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is lurking at the door; its desire is for you, but you must master it. Cain said to his brother Abel, Let us go out to the field. And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel, and killed him. ANTHEM Mercy Words by Susan Bentall Boersma; Music by Craig Courtney Sanctuary Choir and Orchestra Worship Note on p. 4 RITE OF RECONCILIATION PRAYER OF CONFESSION One: All: Listening God, sometimes we pray confidently, trusting in your love. Sometimes we approach you fearfully, conscious of our own failure. Sometimes we are reluctant to pray, evading your call to us. But always you hear us. And so we have confidence in your company, to know ourselves as you know us, and to bring our confessions. Silence for self-reflection Let us pray. God of justice and mercy, we know that we have fallen silent when we should have spoken up. We have ignored the cries of the innocent and joined the crowds in calls of judgment. We have mistaken revenge for justice and have sought punishment to ease our pain. Forgive us, God, for not seeing our own faults, and for not holding ourselves responsible for our inaction and injustice. Restore us, God, to the ways Jesus taught us. Call us into the paths of love and reconciliation and guide us to live into your forgiveness and peace. In the name of Jesus, the Christ. Amen. WORDS OF ASSURANCE One: God has opened our ears and our hearts to know love and forgiveness. There is nothing we need to do other than love one another and love God, for all things come from God s love. Go forth knowing that you have been forgiven and are restored to God. Live in the way of Christ. Amen. God of Grace and God of Glory (on page 1) Harry Emerson Fosdick ( ) wrote this stirring hymn in 1930 while vacationing at his home in Boothbay Harbor, Maine. It was sung at the opening service of Riverside Church in New York City on October 5, Fosdick, an American Baptist minister, was one of the most influential preachers of his time and the founding minister of Riverside Church. John Hughes ( ) composed the tune CWM RHONDDA for a Baptist song gathering. The title refers to an area of Wales. Cwm means valley, and Rhondda is a river. Hughes was an active church layman at Salem Baptist Church at Llantuit Fardre, Wales. He composed music as an avocation, writing many hymns that are easily identified by their Welsh titles. 2
5 GRADUAL Choir: All: Speak, O Lord, as we come to you to receive the food of your holy word. Take your truth, plant it deep in us; shape and fashion us in your likeness. Words and Music by Keith Getty and Stuart Townend Thankyou Music CCLI License # **GOSPEL LESSON Matthew 20: 1-16 One: God be with you. All: And also with you. One: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew. All: Glory to you, O God. Roger Poindexter Jesus said, For the realm of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for the vineyard. After agreeing with the laborers for the usual daily wage, the owner sent them into the vineyard. About nine o'clock, the owner went out about and saw others standing idle in the marketplace, and said to them, You also go into the vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right. So they went. Around noon and again at about three o'clock, the owner came out and did the same. Finally, going out about five o'clock, the owner found others standing around and said to them, Why are you standing here idle all day? They replied, Because no one has hired us. The owner said, You also go into the vineyard. When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to the manager, Call the laborers and give them their pay, beginning with the last and then going to the first. When those hired about five o'clock came, each of them received the usual daily wage. Now when the first came, they thought they would receive more; but each of them also received the usual daily wage. And when they received it, they grumbled against the landowner, saying, These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat. But the landowner replied to one of them, Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? Take what belongs to you and go; I choose to give to this last the same as I give to you. Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or are you envious because I am generous? So the last will be first, and the first will be last. One: All: This is the Gospel of Hope. Praise to you, Creator, Christ and Holy Spirit. 3

Erick Foster and Dan Galbraith Voices of Hope and Orchestra Nicky Cecala See Text-to-Give on p. 11 TO OUR GUESTS Cathedral of Hope celebrates an open communion. We understand the sharing of the bread and the cup in Jesus name to be a representation of an ancient vision of God s feast for all peoples. We don t require you to be a member of this church, or any church, to participate with us in this feast of grace. Simply come forward at the ushers direction. After dipping a wafer in the cup, which contains non-alcoholic grape juice, the minister will place it on your tongue and offer a brief blessing. If you prefer to serve yourself, cup your hands in front of you as you come to receive communion. Gluten-free Wafers are available from the silver intinction set at the center point. Please indicate your need to the ushers on the center aisle and they will direct you to the appropriate position. We ask that you serve yourself take a wafer and dip it in the juice in order to avoid cross-contamination by the server. During the serving of Holy Communion, feel free to join in our Music during Communion. Please also be mindful of those around you who are in prayer and meditation. Mercy With words by Susan Bentall Boersma and music by Craig Courtney, today s Anthem, Mercy, is a powerful, poignant song of confession combined with a plea for mercy. The Greek lyrics Kyrie eleison (Lord, have mercy) are used in ever increasing complexity and voice layering to create a loving call for absolution and grace. 4

In the second of our 21st Century fables, based on the medieval animal symbols for each sin, we will meet the Envious Dog. Though he should be more than content in his huge fenced yard, where he is provided with shelter and all of his needs, the dog sees a butterfly flying free and wants what she has. He learns, however that freedom has a price. It s healthy to be content, but envy can eat you up. ($25 & $29) Live Through This: Surviving the Intersections of Sexuality, God, and Race Author Clay Cane leads readers through an exploration of his overlapping identities: the black son of a white mother, the femme son of a distant father, and a gay man in a nation fighting its antiquated views on sexuality. Cane provides a frank and emotional description of his coming-of-age dividing the essays into five sections (on sexuality, love, race, God, and intersections) that follow him as he grows up in Washington State, West Philadelphia, and eventually New York City. Cane questions notions of enforced masculinity as a child, he danced in his mother s red dress and was then forced to box by his father. Society s growing awareness of gender fluidity makes this a timely story. His observations on the intersections of class and race resonate in today s political climate. Even when he addresses painful issues such as domestic violence, sexual exploitation, food insecurity, and inadequate mental health care, he retains humor and compassion. The book is an affirming and enjoyable read for those interested in African-American or LGBTQ experiences. Cathedral of Hope Mug - $6.50 Buy a CoH Mug - Get any CD (on sale shelf) FREE! Being a Table Captain allows you to give back to the community by supporting Cathedral of Hope as well as the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, all at the same time. As a Table Captain, you are the host! You organize attendees, collect admission, distribute tickets, and select table(s) for you and your guests. You are the liaison between Black Tie Dinner and your guests. Table Captains take on no additional expense, and the experience is as easy as it is rewarding. By becoming a Table Captain, you are committing to fill one or more tables of 10 (including yourself). To aid you in this process, Black Tie Dinner will provide you with a free online account to access our convenient, easy-to-use tools. Here, you can: Manage and select your table(s). Send invitations and collect payment from your guests. Manage your guest information including vouchers and meal selection. Affiliate with your favorite beneficiary. Please notify Leslie Frye, CoH BTD Liaison, at lesfrye@gmail.com if you become a BTD Table Captain for CoH or if you have been a table captain in the past and/or if you have already signed up to captain a table this year so that we can make sure that CoH is the beneficiary. Pride Night at AT&T Performing Arts Center In 2015, Fun Home opened on Broadway, where it became the most acclaimed new musical of the season by winning five Tony Awards including Best Musical. Catch this landmark musical when it lands at the Winspear Opera House later this month. After her father dies unexpectedly, Alison dives deep into her past to tell the story of the volatile, brilliant, one-of-a-kind man whose temperament and secrets defined her family and her life. Moving between past and present, Alison relives her unique childhood playing at the family s Bechdel Funeral Home, her growing understanding of her own sexuality, and the looming, unanswerable questions about her father s hidden desires. Make your Texas Pride Week complete by joining us in Dallas for Pride Night at the Winspear. On Tuesday, September 19, the show begins at 7:30 p.m. Discounted VIP tickets are available for $30, guaranteeing Dress Circle or Grand Tier seats. Discounted VIP tickets at the $60 rate guarantees Orchestra or Mezzanine Level. Purchase your discounted tickets here: attpac.org/pride17 Because we are partnering with ATTPAC, we re all automatically denoted VIPs. As a CoH VIP, you ll have access to a private pre-show bar and the postshow party, complete with the cast and a DJ. Stop by the table in the Fellowship Hall of Cathedral of Hope today and next Sunday for more information. You can also contact Paul Kolasci at pkolasci@cathedralofhope.com. 14 The Joy of Serving From Bruce Ackerman as told to Frank Trejo In the 15 years that I ve been involved with the Cathedral of Hope s Tutor Ministry at Maple Lawn Elementary, I ve come to learn that this ministry is more than tutoring. It s about building relationships with the students and teachers. That s the reason I got involved in this ministry 15 years ago; I saw the need for it and once I got started I saw the impact it had on the students and the school. I ve seen the difference this ministry has made in the lives of the students at this school so close to our campus. The students are so appreciative, they are very happy to have someone come help them and pay attention to them. While many of the students we tutor are those that teachers believe need extra help, some are students that teachers feel are advanced and are not challenged enough in the classroom. One of the students I tutored did so well that he ended up receiving a scholarship to attend St. Mark s School of Texas. When we give volunteer time to any cause, we want to see results. I ve seen that when we give to the Cathedral of Hope Tutor Ministry, we can see how our volunteering is helping the lives of students and teachers. Not only do we bless those we serve, we receive a blessing, as well. Bruce has been a member of CoH since July If this story touches you, and you want to find a ministry in which to serve, contact Anita Haddy, Director of Ministry & Volunteer Development at ahaddy@cathedralofhope.com or X135. School Supply Drive Results: THANK YOU! A most heartfelt thanks to everyone who participated in the annual Back to School Drive benefiting Prism Health North Texas by donating school supplies. Because of your overwhelming generosity, we were also able to donate to Hernandez Elementary School and John Neely Bryan Elementary School. As is so often the case with the Cathedral of Hope / Dallas Hope Charities congregation, our cup overflowed. A total of 2,750 items were donated, helping to level the playing field for so many who will be starting a new school year. May your thoughtfulness, selflessness, and kindness be returned many times over. LOOKING FOR A FINANCIAL PARTNER AS DIVERSE AS YOU ARE?
