3 . 0 E 9 Q E 4 Q J For the Many This week, we will discuss some very specific changes that you will notice in the words of nstitution and Consecration. n the familiar section of the Eucharistic Prayer where Jesus words are repeated from the Last Supper, the new translation will read: Take this, all of you, and eat of it, for this is my Body, which will be given up for you. Then in regard to the sacred cup, we hear, Take this, all of you, and drink from it, for this is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me. Obviously, we hear several changes. The old translation read, This is the cup of my blood. The new translation uses the word chalice instead of cup. The word chalice is a more literal translation of the Latin and is also used in other vernacular translations, such as Spanish and French. Chalice also indicates a specific liturgical meaning, letting us know that the vessel is sacred. Jesus uses the word chalice in Luke and St. Paul uses it in his First Letter to the Corinthians in a Eucharistic reference to the Chalice of his Blood. We also hear the words will be poured out instead of will be shed with the new translation. Blood can be shed of a body, but not of a chalice or sacred cup. However, the blood of the new and eternal covenant can be poured out of both a body and a chalice. This phrase connects Christ s salvific action of the outpouring of his blood for us at Calvary with the pouring out of the blood of the new and eternal covenant that we participate in through every single Liturgy of the Eucharist when we celebrate the Holy Mass the memorial of his passion, death and resurrection. There is another substantial change that we hear with the new translation. t reads, which will be poured out for you and for many, instead of which will be poured out for you and for all. We should not misunderstand this change in the translation. t absolutely does not mean that Christ did not die for all human persons. He did, most certainly. His mission was and is universal that is for all of humanity. Again, this new translation is more literal of the Latin and is also used by other vernacular translations of the Latin (i.e., Spanish, French, etc.). But the new translation draws out several other very important realities. First, it mirrors Jesus words exactly from the Last Supper in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, where He instructed his Apostles to take the chalice and drink from the blood of the new and eternal that would be poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. t also refers to a very important Old Testament messianic passage from saiah 5, called a Suffering Servant Psalm. The passage was an indicator of what the Messiah would undergo, and how he would appear. n this prophesy, saiah foretold that God one day would send his servant who would make himself an offering for sin, bearing the sin of many and making many righteous. Jesus, by speaking at the Last Supper about his own blood being poured out for many, was associating himself with this suffering servant figure prophesied by saiah. Jesus is the one who offers his life for the many. At the same time, as St. Paul indicates in his First Letter to Timothy, Jesus also died for all (1 Timothy :6). On our part, we must receive and accept this gift of eternal life that Jesus offers to all with all its responsibilities so that we might be made righteous by Christ s self-offering for sin. The new translation of the many better shows that we have a choice to make of ultimate importance. t is possible that some may reject this gift. We want to be counted among the many who accept the gift of salvation by living in the gift of God s grace. f g h i j g k j l m n o p q r s t u t v s w s x y z { } ~ { t q u u t v s { } } n } s } q u ƒ z s } } ˆ Š Œ j Œ i j g Ž ˆ l j lœ m l k l š š m œ ž " # $ $ % & ' ( " # $ $ % & ' F L # M $ & ' F R $ # $ $ & ' F R $ # M $ & ' ( R R # M $ & ' F Y # M $ % & ' F. 9? 6 * : D [ \ *! ) *, , * * : * ; < 0 4 : ) 1 : = 6 : 9 6. : 4? * * < 1 A 9. 1 * B * 7 0 * C 1 D * : 1 G. : * 0 A - * 1 :? 6 * 0 ) * = H 6. : - * :. : : * - * 1 : : A : 1 9 * 5 * D * 0 * * : ) = J - : : * N. 5 CONDOLENCES (CCC 1405) There is no surer pledge or clearer sign of this great hope in the new heavens and new earth in which righteousness dwells, than the Eucharist. Every time this mystery is celebrated, the work of our redemption is carried on and we break the one bread that provides the medicine of immortality, the antidote for death, and the food that makes us live forever in Jesus Christ. With this great hope we pray for our brother who has died: Francesco Frank Provenzano, 94, November 6 May he enjoy the eternal banquet the Lord has prepared for him.
