1 T Dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome riumph of the Cross November 8 & 9, 2008 Office STATUE OF ST. ANTHONY: What do you do when a grieving widow and mother who has lost her son says, I want the statue back? Do you act hard-nosed about it and tell her, No, you gave it to the church and it belongs to the church you can t have it? This is a true statement about ownership. Do you let your heart guide you and say, Is a statue worth the anguish of telling a widow and grieving mother with tears in her eyes, no you can t have it? Maybe some of you will not agree with me but I allowed Mrs. Assunta Oliveri to have the Statue of St. Anthony which she had originally donated in memory of her husband and son. My compassion toward her may be upsetting to some of the former parishioners from St. Anthony s who found this image to be so much a part of your personal devotion but I hope you understand why I did it. When I returned the statue to Mrs. Oliveri, I told her that I would be placing this notification in the bulletin and she understood. I think that this is a good example to cause all of us to reflect, When I give to the church, do I give it freely to the honor of God with no strings attached or do I consider it my own that is merely on loan to the church to use while it pleases me? Do we give freely to God? Fr. Nau RESPECT FOR LIFE: By defending the embryo, we defend the idea of human life as having inherent dignity. If we dismiss the embryo as a form of life we can destroy at will for supposed medical benefits, we leave little basis for defending other unpopular or marginalized members of the human race once someone sees them as being worth more dead than alive. (Richard Doerflinger, Associate Director of USCCB s Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities.) THE CHURCH AT PRAYER & the Retranslation of the Roman Missal. The Annual Diocesan Liturgy Workshop with presentations from Msgr. Thomas Petronek will be offered on Saturday, November 15, :30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Pritchard Laughlin Civic Center in Cambridge, Ohio. The 2008 fall liturgy workshop is designed to help the priests of our diocese and the people of our parishes to understand and receive with great benefit the coming retranslations of the prayers of the Mass. There will be three presentations by Msgr. Petronek. 1.) God s People praying in their unity and diversity where we are. 2) God s People at Prayer -- through the lens of Christ s Mystical Body who we are in God s sight and how we respond in prayer to God s love for us. 3) Some samples of the retranslation from Latin into English of the prayers of the Mass how we pray. The retranslation is being done at the request of the Holy See. Registration forms can be found on the bulletin board at the entrance of the church. CONGRATULATIONS: Baptisms: CCC 1226 From the very day of Pentecost the Church has celebrated and administered holy Baptism. Indeed St. Peter declares to the crowd astounded by his preaching: Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Thus our parish community continues the great joy of celebrating the sacrament of Baptism. It is with great joy that we welcome into the Christian community: Nicholas John Mascio child of John & Nicole (Minch) Mascio Gemma Hope Rigaud child of Jean-Philippe & Maria (Herrmann) Rigaud CONDOLENCES: CCC 1030 All who die in God s grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven. We offer our prayers for our brothers and sisters so that they may have eternal joy. We pray for their families so that they may not be overcome with grief but find hope in the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Pray for our deceased: Edward D Angelo, 85, October 14, Josephine M. Stasiulewicz, 99, October 27
