For more information on the retreat, call AIM at GS: GIOVENTÙ STUDENTESCA ITALIAN FOR STUDENT YOUTH Beginning on Sunday, September 25, the Communion & Liberation high school group known as GS will resume its weekly meetings. Meetings take place on Sundays at 7:30pm in the school building at St. Peter's Church. GS, short for Gioventù Studentesca (Italian for Student Youth ), began in the friendship that sprang up among Fr. Luigi Giussani and a group of students in the Berchet high school in Milan, Italy; now, fifty years later, that friendship has spread throughout the world to 70 countries, including the United States, where GS groups exist in numerous cities and towns. Our weekly meetings involve prayer, song, the reading and discussion of texts by Fr. Giussani and others, the viewing and discussion of movies and other cultural activities, and charitable work. Those who wish can also attend a winter and a summer trip during which we meet with other students in GS for lessons, games, prayer, and fellowship. At our weekly meetings we seek to discover our humanity, and to recognize Jesus Christ as the One who fulfills our deepest human desires. As a high school student in GS recently put it, GS doesn t exist to apply some concepts to life, or to regulate day-to-day life, but to remind us of the needs that constitute us and that make us human. There is only one method for witnessing to Christ at school: being committed to our humanity, taking it seriously. For more information, please contact Mr. Stephen Lewis at (740) , or selewis633@comcast.net 2 MONDAY MASS AND NOVENA Beginning on Monday, October 3 we are moving the time for the Monday evening Mass and Novena of the Miraculous Medal from 6:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. MORNING PRAYER AT THE CATHEDRAL "It is you whom I invoke, O Lord. 3 CONFERENCE TO EXPLORE SCRIPTURE AND TRADITION Renowned speakers to discuss role of Sacred Tradition in the Catholic Church A unique partnership of Scripture and Tradition awaits the attendees of the Ninth Annual Deep in History Conference, October 21-23, 2011, at the Hilton Easton in Columbus, Ohio. The conference explains how Scripture and Tradition are indispensable in increasing one's knowledge of God. It also traces the role of Tradition in the teachings of the New Testament and Church Fathers as well as historical events, such as the Reformation and Vatican II. The conference focuses on the theme: "Stand Firm on Tradition: The Role of Sacred Tradition in the Life of the Church." Two keynote speakers are Marcus Grodi, founder and president of the Coming Home Network International, and Dr. Scott Hahn, author and professor of biblical theology at Franciscan University of Steubenville. When Hahn was a new Catholic 25 years ago, he realized how little he knew about Tradition. "With Scripture, I at least felt a certain comfort level," he says. "But when it came to understanding Tradition, I felt more like a fish out of water. There was only one solution: Dive in! I did, and I found a wealth of wisdom and blessings for my Christian life." Other speakers include: Bishop Frederick F. Campbell of Columbus; Mark Shea, internationally known Catholic writer and speaker; Monsignor Frank Lane, spiritual director at Mount St. Mary's Seminary of the West; Father Ray Ryland, renowned apologist and assistant at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Steubenville; Dr. Theresa Farnan, advisor to the USCCB Committee on Laity, Marriage, Family Life and Youth; Roy Schoeman, Jewish convert and author of Salvation Is From the Jews; Dr. Paul Thigpen, Catholic apologist and author; and Dr. Kenneth Howell, director and senior fellow at the St. John Institute of Catholic Thought. Hosted by the Coming Home Network International and Franciscan University of Steubenville, the conference includes daily Mass, confession, adoration, and fellowship. Attendees are also invited to a Sacred Tradition Panel Discussion, which will be taped for EWTN's The Journey Home. Conference registration rates are $109 per person or $168 per married couple. The cost for religious sisters and brothers is $55, while priests may attend for free.
