To date, 272 Saint Joseph parishioners have pledged $57,848 very close to our $64,000 goal. Thank you for helping to make it possible for the Archdiocese to provide services to schools and parishes, to youth ministry, campus ministry, Catholic Charities, seminarian education and priest retirement. ARCHDIOCESAN PRIEST APPOINTED EIGHTH BISHOP OF FALL RIVER, MA Pope Francis has appointed the Most Reverend Edgar Moreira da Cunha, S.D.V., currently an Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Newark, to become the eighth bishop of the Fall River Diocese (which encompasses Bristol County, Cape Cod, Martha s Vineyard, Nantucket and parts of Plymouth County in Massachusetts). We in Saint Joseph Parish were blessed to have Bishop da Cunha celebrate the sacrament of Confirmation here on May 6, Archbishop Myers said in a statement, For some 36 years, Bishop da Cunha has been an integral part of the life of the Local Church of Newark first as a seminarian at Immaculate Conception Seminary, then as a Vocationist Priest and Pastor ministering in several Newark parishes, and ultimately, as a brother Bishop. From my first meeting with him in 2001 I saw the heart of a pastor. That quality led me to ask then Pope, now Saint, John Paul II to appoint him as Auxiliary Bishop in Bishop da Cunha has continued to share that heart with the people of the Archdiocese of Newark throughout his episcopal ministry and leadership of our Evangelization and New Energies parish initiatives, and most recently as Vicar General. Coadjutor Archbishop Hebda added, [Bishop da Cunha] will be missed in the Archdiocese for his keen pastoral insights [and] his engaging homilies (in a whole host of languages)! 3 FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, JULY 13, 2014 FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Continuing last week s notice of recent books you may enjoy, here are some biographies. Steven Watt s Self-Help Messiah (Other Press, 2013) is about Dale Carnegie, famous author of How to Win Friends and Influence People, who once joked that it took him eight years to get his wife to marry him. Robert Hilburn s Johnny Cash: The Life (Little, Brown, 2013). Cash, who went from prison to a storied music career, once called himself a C+ Christian, a grade Hilburn says some of his friends thought a bit too generous. Doris Kearns Goodwin s The Bully Pulpit (Simon and Schuster, 2013) is about Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft, onetime allies who became bitter political opponents. The book describes a touching reconciliation between them. Taft s dream job was the Supreme Court and he once turned down a chance to be appointed because he thought duty called him to take another post. After his presidency, he got his wish. Deborah Solomon s American Mirror (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2013) tells of Norman Rockwell, often belittled by highbrow art critics but appreciated by millions of ordinary Americans, who thought he memorably captured their values in his Saturday Evening Post cover paintings. Leo Damrosch s Jonathan Swift: His Life and His World (Yale University Press, 2013) is a masterful biography of one of the great writers in English and one of its two greatest satirists. Swift was also one of the most influential clergymen of his day. John Eliot Gardiner s Bach: Music in the Castle of Heaven (Knopf, 2013) concentrates strongly on Bach s religious music, which Gardiner sees as central to Bach s immortal achievements. Bach saw the purpose of his music as honoring God and re-creating the soul. Gardiner, who has spent his musical life performing and conducting Bach, says his sounds capture in an inexplicable way the joys and suffering we encounter in our earthly lives, helping us to access the emotional core of human experience. Elisabeth Sifton and Fritz Stern s No Ordinary Men: Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Hans Von Dohnanyi: Resisters Against Hitler in Church and State (New York Review of Books, 2013) tells of two fervently religious men who lost their lives as a result of the 1944 attempt to oust Hitler. Laurence Goldstone s Birdmen (Ballantine, 2014) recounts the lives of pioneers of flight, especially the Wright brothers and Glenn Curtiss. (continued above) Will Harlan s Untamed (Grove 2014) is the story of Carol Ruckdeschel, who in 1973 came to Georgia s Cumberland Island, once owned by such wealthy families as the Carnegies and the Candlers (of the Coca-Cola fortune). For years she has studied and protected the sea turtles who visit there to spawn before they drift to Africa. One reviewer, Max Watman, has called her a benevolent invasive species of one. John Drury s Music at Midnight: The Life and Poetry of George Herbert (Chicago, 2013) tells of the 17thcentury Anglican clergyman and poet, and offers astute interpretations of his work. Unpublished in his lifetime, Herbert entrusted a book of his poems to his friend Isaac Walton with instructions to offer it to the publisher Nicholas Ferrar if Ferrar thought it may turn to the advantage of any dejected poor Soul. Recent books of fiction and poetry include: Paul Harding s Enon (NY: Random House, 2013), about a grieving man whose trials will likely afflict us all at one time or another. Harding remarks at one point: Be comforted in the fact that the ache in your heart and the confusion in your soul means that you are still alive, still human, and still open to the beauty of the world. The Hungarian novelist La szlo Krasznahorkai s Sieobo There Below (New Directions, 2013) is an explanation of holiness and art that has attracted considerable praise. The son of the late Polish poet Czeslaw Milosz has issued his father s Selected Poems and Last Poems, (NY: ECCO/Harper Collins, 2011), a final benediction from one of the modern age s greatest writers. Anthony and Ben Holden have edited Poetry That Makes Grown Men Cry (NY: Simon and Schuster, 2014), which couldn t be more removed from maudlin sentimentality. Msgr. 5 ONE FAMILY IN MISSION HELPING THE CHURCH IN PAPUA NEW GUINEA Next weekend, July 19-20, our parish will participate in the diocesan Mission Cooperative Plan which assigns a mission group to every parish to speak about the work of our church in other parts of the world and to share with us news of how our church continues to help the poorest of the poor. The parishioners of Saint Joseph Church will be invited to help bring the message of Jesus to the people of Western Province in Papua New Guinea. Missionary priest, Fr. Rozario Menezes SMM will be preaching at our Masses. Fr. Jose Jacob SMM offers us a look at this nation made up of a cluster of islands located south of the equator to the north of Australia and to the east of Indonesia. The Diocese of Daru-Kiunga is one of the 18 Catholic dioceses in this country and covers the entire state of Western Province. The geography of this massive area of approximately 42,000 sq. miles is most challenging: swamps, lakes, rivers and mountains most of which are dense tropical forests cover the area. As the country is close to the equator it is very hot and humid throughout the year. The tribal people, of Melanesian race, came in contact with the external world when Montfort Missionaries from Canada arrived in the late 1950 s. Since then the Church in this remote and undeveloped part of the world has brought faith, health and education to the people. Today the Catholic population is around 40,000 and makes up approximately 42% of the total population of the state. The church began its work in the remote villages by establishing schools and primary health clinics which have brought considerable improvement in the quality of life of the people. To this day it is the diocese that provides basic health and educational needs of the people, in the absence of such services from the government. The area has few transportation facilities and depends on small planes to transport essential medical supplies and other necessities. In the absence of telephones, electricity and roads our only means of communication between parishes and the diocesan headquarters is two way radios. A very vibrant and energetic Church has emerged here over the past 40 years due to the hard work of the innumerable missionaries, some of whom have FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, JULY 13, 2014 (continued above) 5 given their entire working years in the service of these simple, yet happy and welcoming people. Having emerged in the post Vatican period, the diocese promotes the Spirituality of Communion among all its faithful thus involving them in the decision making from the grass roots level. One of the main challenges before the diocese is to raise enough funds to continue all these services in the formation of faith as well as other humanitarian and developmental activities.
