PLEASE, Silence Your Cell Phone! Thank you. GIVING UP: DEATH Good Morning, Cathedral of Hope United Church of Christ! Alleluia! Christ is Risen Christ is Risen Indeed. These are words that I remember so fondly as we celebrate Easter together at Cathedral of Hope United Church of Christ. They are the words that are recited again and again as we greet a risen Christ, a Christ who is alive. Christ is risen, and the Risen Christ greets us today with an invitation. This invitation is to experience anew the lifegiving, life-sustaining, life-empowering presence of the Christ that rises within each one of us this day. This Risen Christ demands that we shake off the mistaken belief that death has power, that our lives must be mundane, mediocre, or something less than inspiring. We step out of the tomb today, leaving behind guilt, control, expectations, popularity, and our very lives as they were before we entered the Lenten season. We rise again in the power of Christ to a new life with new perspective, a new lens through which we can choose to view our lives, and to live into that vision. Yes, it is a life that still has complications, disappointments, struggles, and problems, but the believers life is one that is lived with the awareness that this God, risen from the dead, is with us, and will be with us through it all, through the good times and the bad. Our world today needs to move from death to life and especially to the new life that Jesus offers us, a life filled with opportunities, promises, and good news. As we each choose to welcome the risen Christ this day, I pray that we will choose life over death and leave behind us whatever it was that we each decided to give up this holy season, in order that we might be filled up by the new thing that God is doing within us. Today, get ready to give up anything that might leave you dead in spirit, in faith, or in body, and to realize the potential that is offered as we allow the journey to new life to be born in us this day. Happy Easter! And remember this is not a day, nor a season, but something that we can embrace each and every day of the rest of our lives. Sincerely, in Christ The Reverend Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas Senior Pastor HOPEQuotes Tonight s service was not only reflective but poignant...and much needed. EASTER HYMN Cover designed by Charles Owen. Additional graphics created by Chris Chism, Shelley Darling, Dan Peeler and Charlie Rose. Publication designed by Charles Owen and David Moldenhauer. 1 EASTER The modern English term Easter derives from the Old English word Ēastre or Ēostre. The word Easter is held by some to have originally referred to the name of an Anglo- Saxon goddess, Ēostre. Easter is held by others to have originally referred to the name of a Babylonian goddess, Ishtar. Others surmise that Eostre and Ishtar, pronounced identically, are two forms of the same word, referring to two forms of the same goddess, although the spelling differentiated through time and distance. In Greek and Latin, the Christian celebration was, and is, called Pascha, a word derived, through Aramaic, from the Hebrew term Pesach, known in English as Passover, which originally denoted the Jewish festival commemorating the story of the Exodus. Already in the 1st century, Paul, writing from Ephesus to the Christians in Corinth, applied the term to Christ. In most of the non-english speaking world, the feast is known by names derived from the Greek and Latin Pascha. I Will Rise First performed by Chris Tomlin, I Will Rise is rooted in the Contemporary Christian music tradition. The setting used to open our services today was arranged by Lynda Hasseler and Craig Courtney to be used at a funeral for family Continued on p. 2

Andria Davis So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth, for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Christ in glory. ANTHEM Hallelujahs to the Lamb Music by Ludwig van Beethoven and G.F. Handel arr. 5 **GOSPEL LESSON John 20: 1-18 One: All: One: All: God be with you. And also with you. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John. Glory to you, O God. Rev. Dr. Michael Diaz Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him. Then Peter and the other disciple set out and went toward the tomb. The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent down to look in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen wrappings lying there, and the cloth that had been on Jesus head, not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not understand the scripture, that Jesus must rise from the dead. Then the disciples returned to their homes. But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb; and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying, one at the head and the other at the feet. They said to her, Woman, why are you weeping? She said to them, They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him. When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, Woman, why are you weeping? For whom are you looking? Supposing it was the gardener, she said to him, Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away. Jesus said to her, Mary! She turned and said to him in Hebrew, Rabboni! which means Teacher. Jesus said to her, Do not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended to God. But go to my brothers and say to them, I am ascending to my Abba and your Abba, to my God and your God. Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, I have seen the Lord ; and she told them what the Savior had said to her. One: All: This is the Gospel of Hope. Praise to you, Creator, Christ and Holy Spirit. **GOSPEL RESPONSE Celtic Alleluia Words and Music by Fintan O Carroll and Christopher Walker, adapted Fintan O Carrol and Christopher Walker OneLicense.net License #A SERMON Giving Up: Death Rev. 6 THE EUCHARIST PRESENTATION OF OUR TITHES AND OFFERINGS OFFERTORY End of the Beginning Words and Music by David Phelps; arr. Lari Goss Voices of Hope featuring Jason Huff Sanctuary Choir and Orchestra CELEBRATION OF HOLY COMMUNION WORDS OF INSTITUTION PRAYER OF CONSECRATION INVITATION TO THE FEAST DISTRIBUTION OF THE ELEMENTS MUSIC DURING COMMUNION TO OUR GUESTS Cathedral of Hope celebrates an open communion. We understand the sharing of the bread and the cup in Jesus name to be a representation of an ancient vision of God s feast for all peoples. We don t require you to be a member of this church, or any church, to participate with us in this feast of grace. Simply come forward at the ushers direction. After dipping a wafer in the cup, which contains non-alcoholic grape juice, the minister will place it on your tongue and offer a brief blessing. If you prefer to serve yourself, cup your hands in front of you as you come to receive communion. Gluten-free Wafers are available from the silver intinction set at the center point. Please indicate your need to the ushers on the center aisle and they will direct you to the appropriate position. We ask that you serve yourself take a wafer and dip it in the juice in order to avoid cross-contamination by the server. During the serving of Holy Communion, feel free to join in our Music during Communion. Please also be mindful of those around you who are in prayer and meditation. TO OUR GUESTS It has become a tradition at the Cathedral of Hope to rise as we end our time of communion (as indicated by **), join hands as an expression of our unity in Christ, and lift them up in glory to God. We invite you to join as you are able, in body or spirit. Hymn of Promise In the bulb there is a flower; in the seed, an apple tree; in cocoons, a hidden promise: butterflies will soon be free! In the cold and snow of winter there s a spring that waits to be, unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see. There s a song in every silence, seeking word and melody; there s a dawn for every darkness, bringing hope to you and me. From the past will come the future; what it holds, a mystery, unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see. In our end is our beginning; in our time, infinity; in our doubt there is believing; in our life, eternity. In our death, a resurrection; at the last, a victory, unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see. You Are Lord You are Lord, you are Lord! You are risen from the dead and you are Lord! Why We Use Incense in our Liturgy Ancient practice to be used TODAY at the 11 a.m. service At certain services during the liturgical year, Cathedral of Hope uses incense during worship. Some, whose church background did not include this practice, have asked why we do this. We believe that worship should be experiential. We are most fully engaged when the senses of sight, sound, smell, taste and touch are stirred. Incense is one way in which the Church throughout history has done that. Moreover, the use of incense is a thoroughly Biblical concept. We see it commanded of the Jews (Exodus 25:29) and then used in worship in Israel from that point on. Notice the prophecy of Malachi 1:11, From the rising of the sun to its setting my name is great among the nations, and in every place incense is offered to my name. God actually anticipates the use of incense by all people in God s name. In the New Testament, we see Zechariah offering incense in the sanctuary when the angel of the Lord appears to him (Luke 1:8-11). Later, in Revelation, we see the elders holding golden bowls of incense, which are the prayers of the saints (Revelation 5:8). Incense is the symbol of our prayers rising up to the Lord. It is also symbolic of spiritual cleansing and has been used in Christian worship since ancient times. So, as you smell the incense in our services, remember the history and symbolism behind it, and try to let it enhance your experience of worship! Jazz Up and Rock Out! But then, at some point, we ask, Then who was Jesus praying to? Himself?! Let s clear up a common misconception. In Jesus day, to call someone Messiah or Son of God or Son of Man did not necessarily imply divinity. In fact, theologians hotly debate whether Jesus really understood his own divinity. However, after Jesus resurrection, the disciples-turned-apostles knew Jesus was, indeed, divine. The way the church understands this is that God being a trinity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit sent the Son to Earth, and the Son was incarnated (literally, en-fleshed ) in the person of Jesus of Nazareth. This does not mean Jesus was only one-third of God. Jesus of Nazareth was and is fully God. Since his death and resurrection, we have called this Son Jesus Christ. Conversation starters to talk with your youth about this topic: Do you think it was important for God to take human form? Why? What words would you use to describe Jesus to someone who has never heard of him before? What s important to you about Jesus humanity? What about Jesus divinity? Why would God want Jesus to be fully human and fully God? Contact Alan Womack, Minister for Youth and Young Adults at awomack@cathedralofhope.com for more information about this Ministry.
