2 Welcome to Cathedral of Hope! What began in 1970 as a circle of 12 friends meeting weekly for worship and fellowship has grown into Cathedral of Hope, a Vibrant, Inclusive, Progressive (VIP) congregation of the United Church of Christ. Founded in and serving beyond the LGBTQ community, our mission is to reclaim Christianity as a faith of extravagant grace, radical inclusion, and relentless compassion by being a people of hope proclaiming God s inclusive love, removing barriers to faith and empowering all to grow in grace toward wholeness. If you are visiting Cathedral of Hope for the first time, we are glad to have you here, are blessed by your presence, and hope you will return often! If there is anything we can do to make your visit more enjoyable, please call on our Ushers to assist you. You re invited to use the restroom that corresponds with your gender identity or the restroom that is the safest and most comfortable for you. Gendered, multiple-occupancy restrooms are located near the double glass doors behind the Sanctuary. All-gender, single-occupancy restrooms are available off the hall to the right of the Hall of Heroes area. For more information about the church, please come to the Ministry & Visitor s Center located next to Sources of Hope. Our worship services are recorded for broadcast worldwide. We make every effort to respect your privacy; however, to ensure that you are not seen on screen, please sit in one of the last five rows of pews in the center section. Large-print bulletins and assisted listening systems are available in the bookstore. Neil s NOTE Good Morning, Cathedral of Hope United Church of Christ! Today is Pentecost Sunday! Pentecost marks what many consider the birth of the Church. It was the day that the disciples, gathered in the upper room, heard the sound of a rushing wind which filled the room, and the audible voice of God, the Holy Spirit, came upon them like tongues of fire, and the good news of Christ inhabited their bodies. In the Christian tradition, Pentecost marks the shifting of God s redemptive power from the descendants of Abraham to all peoples. It was this act of God s power that brought all peoples under the influence of the Holy Spirit and enabled the rapid spread of Christianity. Within a few decades of Pentecost, important congregations had been established in every major city in the Roman Empire. More than 2000 years of Christian tradition have passed, yet we still recall this event when people from all over the ancient world were gathered in Jerusalem for the Festival of Weeks (Shavuot). The Galilean disciples found themselves speaking languages that were foreign to them, and each heard the good news of Christ spoken in their own tongue. They were under the influence of the Holy Spirit!! As we gather today to be confronted, perhaps challenged, by the mighty power of God s good news and God s acts of radical grace and inclusion, we too are invited to come under the influence of the Holy. We open ourselves up to the mark of love, which enables each of us to speak that love into our culture in a language that it will hear only when it is marked by the Spirit of Pentecost. It is this generous Spirit which leads us toward radical inclusion, relentless compassion, and extravagant grace. It is this Spirit which calls us to reclaim Christianity, to reclaim those acts of God that have, for far too long, been ignored by the church of Jesus that we so dearly love and cherish. Today, we stand with those who want to see a return to the central message of Jesus, LOVE, and a rejection of a cultural, political movement, the so-called Christianity that has hijacked the Gospel, the Good News. On May 24, following the example of the early reformers of Christianity in the 1500s, modern-day reformers will affix six theses entitled A Confession of Faith in a Time of Crisis to the gates of the White House. See the document on Page 1. Cathedral of Hope is joining this action because we have long been a congregation of resistance, a Vibrant, Inclusive and Progressive congregation that resists a dominant theology of sexuality and spirituality that has been harmful to God s LGBTQ+ people. It is time for a new Pentecost, not just revisiting it, but reclaiming it as a radical act of God getting our attention and bringing us under the influence of the Holy Spirit, a spiritual act that must transform us if it is going to transform the world. 3 Reclaiming Jesus A Confession of Faith in a Time of Crisis We are living through perilous and polarizing times as a nation, with a dangerous crisis of moral and political leadership at the highest levels of our government and in our churches. We believe the soul of the nation and the integrity of faith are now at stake. It is time to be followers of Jesus before anything else nationality, political party, race, ethnicity, gender, geography. Our identity in Christ precedes every other identity. When politics undermines our theology, we must examine that politics. The church s role is to change the world through the life and love of Jesus Christ. The government s role is to serve the common good by protecting justice and peace. When that role is undermined by political leadership, faith leaders must stand up and speak out. Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, The church must be reminded that it is not the master or the servant of the state, but rather the conscience of the state. It is often the duty of Christian leaders, especially elders, to speak the truth in love to our churches and to name and warn against temptations, racial and cultural captivities, false doctrines, and political idolatries and even our complicity in them. We do so here with humility, prayer, and a deep dependency on the grace and Holy Spirit of God. Jesus is Lord. That is our foundational confession. If Jesus is Lord, then Caesar was not nor any other political ruler since. We pray, Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven (Matthew 6:10). Our faith is personal but never private, meant not only for heaven but for this earth. Applying what Jesus is Lord means today is the message we commend as elders to our churches. We pray that we, as followers of Jesus, will find the depth of faith to match the danger of our political crisis. The present crisis calls us to go deeper deeper into our relationship to God; into our relationships with each other, especially across racial, ethic, and national lines; and into our relationships with the most vulnerable, who are at greatest risk. We need to recover the power of confessing our faith. Lament, repent, and then repair. If Jesus is Lord, there is always space for grace. We believe it is time to speak and to act in faith and conscience, not because of politics, but because we are disciples of Jesus Christ to whom be all authority, honor, and glory. He is the light in our darkness. I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life (John 8:12). Signed: Bishop Carroll A. Baltimore, Rev. Dr. Peter Borgdorff, Dr. Amos Brown, Rev. Dr. Walter Brueggemann, Dr. Tony Campolo, Dr. Iva Carruthers, Bishop Michael Curry, Rev. Dr. James Forbes, Rev. Wesley Granberg-Michaelson, Dr. Cynthia Hale, Rev. Dr. Richard Hamm, Rev. Dr. Joel Hunter, Rev. Dr. Jo Anne Lyon, Bishop Vashti McKenzie, Rev. Dr. Otis Moss, Jr., Dr. John Perkins, Bishop Lawrence Reddick, Fr. Richard Rohr, Dr. Ron Sider, Rev. Jim Wallis, Rev. Dr. Sharon Watkins, Dr. Barbara Williams-Skinner, Bishop Will Willimon, Rev. Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas I. WE BELIEVE each human being is made in God s image and likeness. Racial bigotry is a brutal denial of the image of God in some of the children of God. THEREFORE, WE REJECT the resurgence of white nationalism and racism in our nation on many fronts, including the highest levels of political leadership. We reject white supremacy and commit ourselves to help dismantle the systems and structures that perpetuate white preference and advantage. Any doctrines or political strategies that use racist resentments, fears, or language must be named as public sin. III. WE BELIEVE how we treat the hungry, the thirsty, the naked, the stranger, the sick, and the prisoner is how we treat Christ himself. THEREFORE, WE REJECT the language and policies of political leaders who would debase and abandon the most vulnerable children of God. We strongly deplore the growing attacks on immigrants and refugees; we won t accept the neglect of the well-being of low-income families and children. V. WE BELIEVE that Christ s way of leadership is servanthood, not domination. We support democracy, not because we believe in human perfection, but because we do not. THEREFORE, WE REJECT any moves toward autocratic political leadership and authoritarian rule. We believe authoritarian political leadership is a theological danger threatening democracy and the common good and we will resist it. Paid for by the signers of the declaration. 1 II. WE BELIEVE we are one body. In Christ, there is to be no oppression based on race, gender, identity, or class. THEREFORE, WE REJECT misogyny, the mistreatment, violent abuse, sexual harassment, and assault of women being further revealed in our culture and politics, including in our churches, and the oppression of any other child of God. IV. WE BELIEVE that truth is morally central to our personal and public lives. Jesus promises, You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free (John 8:32). THEREFORE, WE REJECT the practice and pattern of lying that is invading our political and civil life. The normalization of lying presents a profound moral danger to the fabric of society. VI. WE BELIEVE Jesus when he tells us to go into all nations making disciples. Our churches and our nations are part of an international community whose interests always surpass national boundaries. We in turn should love and serve the world and all its inhabitants rather than to seek first narrow nationalistic prerogatives. THEREFORE, WE REJECT America first as a theological heresy for followers of Christ. While we share a patriotic love for our country, we reject xenophobic or ethnic nationalism that places one nation over others as a political goal. The name comes from the Ancient Greek word Pentēkostē, literally the fiftieth day, since Pentecost is celebrated seven weeks (50 days) after Easter Sunday. The feast is also called White Sunday, or Whitsun, especially in England, where the following Monday was traditionally a public holiday. Come, O Spirit, Dwell Among Us Today s Processional Hymn is by Janie Alford ( ) who wrote this text in 1979 when she was ninety-two years old. Composer Hal Hopson encouraged Alford to write hymns based on the seasons of the church year. This hymn was included in Nine Hymns for the Church Year in response to that request. It is paired with the hymn tune EBENEZER. Thomas John Williams ( ) included this melody as part of an anthem he composed around 1890, Golen yn y glyn ( Light in the Valley ). Called EBENEZER for a chapel he attended, the tune is alternately known as TON-Y-BOTEL (Welsh Continued on p. 5

5 **INVOCATION OF THE SPIRIT Rev. Andria Davis GATHERING OF THE COMMUNITY Rev. Dr. Neil G. Cazares-Thomas Rev. Erin Wyma **EXCHANGE OF PEACE LITURGY OF THE WORD FIRST LESSON Acts 2: 1-21 All: One: When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability. At that time there were devout Jews from every nation living in Jerusalem. When they heard the loud noise, everyone came running, and they were bewildered to hear their own languages being spoken by the believers. They were completely amazed. How can this be? they exclaimed. These people are all from Galilee, and yet we hear them speaking in our own native languages!... These people are all speaking in our own languages about the wonderful things God has done! They stood there amazed and perplexed. What can this mean? they asked each other. But others in the crowd ridiculed them, saying, They re just drunk, that s all! But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, People of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my servants, both women and men, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. Then everyone who calls on the name of our God shall be saved. 6 GRADUAL Holy Spirit, Living Breath of God Worship Note on p. 7 Words and Music by Keith Getty and Stuart Townend arranged and adapted by David Moldenhauer **GOSPEL LESSON John 15: 26-27; 16: 4-15 One: All: One: All: Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. Come, Holy Spirit. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John. Glory to you, O God. Jesus said, When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from my heavenly parent, the Spirit of truth who comes from God, she will testify on my behalf. You also are to testify because you have been with me from the beginning. I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. But now I am going to the one who sent me; yet none of you asks me, Where are you going? But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts. Nevertheless I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send her to you. And when she comes, she will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because they do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to my heavenly parent and you will see me no longer; about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been condemned. I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, she will guide you into all the truth; for she will not speak on her own, but will speak whatever she hears, and she will declare to you the things that are to come. The Spirit will glorify me, because she will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that my heavenly parent has is mine. For this reason I said that the Spirit will take what is mine and declare it to you. One: All: This is the Gospel of Hope. Praise to you, Creator, Christ and Holy Spirit. 4

CCLI License # Holy Spirit Our Gradual this Pentecost season is a verse and a half of the contemporary hymn, Holy Spirit, Living Breath of God, by composers Keith Getty and Stuart Townend. The contemplative oboe solo at the beginning is an excerpt from Gabriel s Oboe by Ennio Morricone, from the movie, The Mission. Composer Keith Getty explains, the lyric of Holy Spirit, Living Breath of God is as much an explanation of what Scripture states the Holy Spirit does as it is a prayer for our utter dependence on the Holy Spirit in our lives. It is a petition for inward renewal as we are confronted with the living and written Word of God. Why We Use Incense in our Liturgy, TODAY at 11 a.m. At certain services during the liturgical year, Cathedral of Hope uses incense during worship. Some, whose church background did not include this practice, have asked why we do this. We believe that worship should be experiential. We are most fully engaged when the senses of sight, sound, smell, taste and touch are stirred. Incense is one way in which the Church throughout history has done that. Moreover, the use of incense is a thoroughly Biblical concept. We see it commanded of the Jews (Exodus 25:29) and then used in worship in Israel from that point on. Notice the prophecy of Malachi 1:11, From the rising of the sun to its setting my name is great among the nations, and in every place incense is offered to my name. God actually anticipates the use of incense by all people in God s name. In the New Testament, we see Zechariah offering incense in the sanctuary when the angel of the Lord appears to him (Luke 1:8-11). Later, in Revelation, we see the elders holding golden bowls of incense, which are the prayers of the saints (Revelation 5:8). Incense is the symbol of our prayers rising up to the Lord. It is also symbolic of spiritual cleansing and has been used in Christian worship since ancient times. So, as you smell the incense in our services, remember the history and symbolism behind it, and try to let it enhance your experience of worship! 7

12 CONNECT CARE GROW Today in Children s Church It s Pentecost! The Season of Special Effects. The children always enjoy our illustrated PowerPoint story of the coming of the Holy Spirit in the form of individual floating flames to the women and men who were gathered in that famous Upper Room we read about so much in the Gospels and Acts. A fascinating aspect of the story is the presence of Mary, the mother of Jesus who was already there organizing the other women into action, even though her son had departed in the Ascension just 10 days earlier. Mary was a Mover. Contact Dan Peeler at dpeeler@cathedralofhope.com if you have any questions about the Children and Families Ministry. Mary in the Upper Room Dan Peeler, Minister for Children & Families, and Charlie Rose create beautiful illustrations for use in the Children s Church PowerPoint lessons. Great Progress on the New Entry for a New Era Project! As of Thursday, $235, has been raised in cash or pledges for the New Entry for a New Era Project, in addition to the $315,000 on hand at the beginning of the project. That means Part 1a of the project, the Trost Memorial and the first part of Covington Way, is fully funded. We are now working to fund Part 1b of the project only $49, needed to finish the entire project, which connects from Nash Road to the parking lot we affectionately call the Ford Lot. (CoH owns this lot.) To give to this project, use the giving cards in the pews or go online. Questions? We have a well-equipped Children s Center that is well used on Sundays but lays dormant for most of the rest of the week. We are delighted to announce that Hope Early Child Development has now been registered as a separate 501(c)3 and we are now moving forward to put everything in place to become a licensed day care in the state of Texas. There is still much to be done before we can open our doors and one of the first things we need to do is to appoint a well-qualified Board to oversee this new birth! 13 Attend the Youth Mission Trip! July 7-15, 2018 We have 15 people going on the mission trip to Colorado Springs, Colorado. YOU have the chance to go with us as a sponsor! Each day you will get to experience this trip through the eyes of our youth. You will be on the trip with our youth, as a flat Stanley, working alongside our youth and receiving daily reports about what is happening. The United Way reports that over the last three years, nearly every statistic on homelessness in the Springs has been on the rise. Last year alone, individuals in a state of homelessness was up nearly 6% with youth homeless up 7%. Homelessness is just one symptom of poverty in the community. Our youth will participate in building projects for families in transitional housing, outreach events to love on the community, tangible service projects to meet the food and shelter needs of individuals living in homelessness, and will have many opportunities to share the Gospel with families that find themselves on hard times. Sponsorship is just $350 and will include pictures and videos of you (as a flat Stanley) and the youth during the trip. We have fifteen youth and adults that need sponsorships. Your sponsorship will allow you to participate virtually in this fun and life changing experience, as well as, investing in the future leadership of CoH. To support our youth, please contact Alan Miles, Youth Minister, at amiles@cathedralofhope.com because you do not want to miss this chance to Go to Colorado with the Youth. SAT JUNE 9 Cathedral of Hope Sat., June 9, 5PM - 7PM CoH Family Game Night Saturday, June 9, Fellowship Hall, 5-7 p.m. This is a no-screen game night for the whole family! We will provide the pizza, fellowship, and fun!! You just supply your family and any snack or dessert you want to share. Families of all shapes and sizes and ages are welcome. We are going to have a variety of board and group games. You are welcome to bring your own games if you would like. Also, if you or your child are on a special diet that doesn t include pizza, please bring your own sustenance. RSVP in the Children s Ministry area to Minister Dan Peeler or in the Youth Center to Minister Alan Miles. Contact Rev. Erin ewyma@cathedralofhope.com with questions. Greening Tip CoH Children and Families Plant easy to grow marigolds in your gardens or flower pots.
