Dear Parishioners of St. John, COME FOLLOW ME is the theme of this year s Annual Catholic Appeal. In this bulletin you will find an insert that contains the letter from our Cardinal Blase Cupich as well as other information about the appeal. Next weekend I will lead us in the in-pew commitment process. Starting this week we will have the new church office hours. The parish office will be opened from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. This way the office will be opened right after the morning Masses/Eucharistic services. Below you will be able to see some of the pictures from our recent trip to D.C. for the 45th March for Life. Let us continue to keep each other in prayer, Fr. Karol The packet of envelopes we receive each month has a yellow envelope labeled Building Maintenance Monetary donations placed in this envelope are used only for maintaining our Church building. It is not ever used for salaries. We will have a second collection for the Building Maintenance fund the first Sunday of the month. Thank you for your continued support of our parish.

GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE January 28, th Sunday in Ordinary Time "The people were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes." Those gathered in the synagogue where Jesus taught had never heard anything like this before. They were used to the preaching of the well-educated scribes, but Jesus possessed something that those men lacked: authority. Instead of merely interpreting the laws of the prophets, Jesus presented a new vision, indeed, he shared the good news of the Gospel with his listeners. We do not have the opportunity to stand in the presence of Jesus in the same way that those first-century Jews did, but nonetheless we can also stand in awe of his authority. His teachings are available to us through the sacred Scriptures that the Church has preserved and through the sacred tradition that the Church carries on. And in a special way, Christ's authority continues to inspire and guide us through the ministries of the papacy, episcopacy, and priesthood that Jesus established on our behalf while he was yet on earth. As Catholics, we have a special share in the astonishing authority of Jesus through the hierarchy of the Church. Although this structure is often misunderstood or misinterpreted, it is actually an authority rooted in service and modeled after Christ who told his apostles, "The greatest among you must be your servant" (Mt 23:11). This humble exercise of authority is contrary to the worldly search for power. And whenever we find ourselves in a position of authority, we too should strive to lead and direct others in the true spirit of Christian love and service. Chances are, if we truly imitate Christ in this way, people will be astonished at what they see.

SPREAD GROUP AT SAINT ANN Our SPRED (Special Religious Development) Ministry is in need of adult volunteers (21 years of age and older) in order to continue its ministry at St. Ann Church. As per our current leader, Annette Leber, our SPRED volunteers are retiring and need others to take their places to assist our friends with special needs in our faith community. We are having a meeting Monday, February 5 at 7:00 p.m. for parents of children, adolescents, young adults, and adults with special needs, as well as interested adults who want to be a role model to our friends in working with this ministry. You will meet Annette and her group who will explain the SPRED program. Parishioners with intellectual and developmental disabilities and learning problems from the age of six to well into their 80s are served through various Archdiocese SPRED programs. At St. Ann, we serve residents from LARC who are adults (ages 22 and older). St. Ann SPRED is seeking adult men and women who want to grow in their faith and be a friend to one person from LARC within a small faith group of eight volunteers and six friends. We are looking for volunteers who enjoy meeting others, and are open to friendships with other parishioners. This ministry helps each participant become more aware of the presence of God in their lives through a specialized program. Each volunteer is paired with a friend and they learn from each other, and experience joy, laughter, prayer and hope and fellowship. No prior experience is needed to become a volunteer, and training is provided. The group meets monthly September to June. TRUE PROPHETS In Deuteronomy today we hear that God s very words will fill the mouth of a true prophet, but a false prophet will, in a manner of speaking, put mere mortal words into God s mouth. In Mark s Gospel, we see Jesus teaching and healing as a true prophet, one filled with the authority of God s own voice. The whole history of our church is filled with both true and false prophets. Some false prophets were extremely popular and quite well-versed in scripture, and even held positions of authority. But in today s Gospel we learn that Jesus fame spread because he taught with authority; he wasn t an authority because he was popular or famous. Elsewhere, we also learn from him, in his desert temptation confrontations with Satan, that anyone can quote scripture, even against God s purposes. Today we hear that his authority was not like that of the scribes, who held the official positions of religious authority in his day. Our work is to do our best to discern the true prophets in our midst, and to be true prophets as well. The psalmist tells us how to do this: by not hardening our hearts when God speaks. If we truly listen to God, it will be God s very words filling our mouths. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Like so many other churches, it was founded by the master-builder (or financier) Emperor Constantine about the year 315. Paul was martyred outside the walls of the City of Rome at a place called Tre Fontaine, probably on June 29, in the year 65, perhaps the first anniversary of St. Peter s crucifixion. Christians buried him in a quiet place about two miles away, and visited to pray. Constantine was running low on bricks, apparently, because the first church was tiny. In 386 it was demolished and today s basilica begun. This vast and towering space looks much the same today as it did in the fourth century. The centuries have not been kind to ancient Rome, but until the early 1800s St. Paul Outside the Walls survived beautifully, perhaps because it has been assigned for nearly a thousand years to Benedictine monks. It was therefore a vibrant place of daily prayer even through the centuries when Rome was a poor and nearly abandoned city. In 1823 a great fire resulted from a botched repair job to lead on the roof, and St. Paul s was destroyed. It is said that the whole world contributed to its restoration. Even the Russian czar and the viceroy of Egypt gave alabaster, malachite, and lapis lazuli for the pillars and the tabernacle. Several of the precious mosaics were able to be restored, bringing the ancient basilica back to life. One of the great treasures of the basilica is a set of prison chains, said to have been worn by the Apostle in the last days before his martyrdom. Unlike other Roman churches, St. Paul s stands in a garden-like suburban neighborhood, surrounded by stately palm trees, gardens, and parks. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

Clyde Blair Lillian Nowak A Candle in Rome Mrs. O'Malley was walking into town one morning when she ran into Father Timothy. The Father said, "Good Morning to you! Aren't you Mrs. O'Malley and didn't I marry you and your husband a year ago?" She replied, "Aye, that you did, Father." The Father asked, "And would there be there a little one yet?" She replied, "No, not yet, Father." The Father said, "Well, now, I'm going to Rome next week and I'll light a candle for you and your husband." She replied, "Oh, thank you, Father." Then they went their separate ways. Some years later they met again. The Father asked, "Well now, Mrs. O'Malley, how are you these days?" She replied, "Oh, very well, Father!" The Father asked, "And tell me, have you been blessed with any young ones yet?" She replied, "Oh yes, Father! Three sets of twin boys and four girls, ten all together" The Father said, "That's wonderful! And how is your other half doing?" She replied, "Well, he's gone to Rome to blow out your bloody candle. TRAVELING YOUTH MASS On Sunday, January 21st, our parish hosted several youth from our surrounding parishes in Vicariate VI for our first traveling youth Mass. This was planned in coordination with the Youth Ministers from the parishes of St. Anne (Hazel Crest), St. Jude the Apostle (South Holland), St. Kevin (Chicago), and Sts. Peter & Paul (Chicago). Fr. Karol and Dcn. Jim welcomed the youth to St. John and had several of them participate in the liturgy as well. The Mass followed with time for socializing and some fun, as the youth got to know each other better. Our plan is to continue to participate in future traveling Masses so that our Youth Squad is able to interact with youth of the other parishes and see how they are living their faith as well.
