3 Dear Parishioners of St. John, In this weekend s Gospel we hear the words of God: This is my beloved Son. Listen to him. As disciples of Jesus we are attentive to the ways Jesus speaks to us in our lives. What are some ways in which Jesus speaks to you? How do you respond to him? We are together on this journey of faith. Bring these questions into conversation with your Lenten companion. Let us continue to keep each other in prayer during Lent, Fr. Karol Please join us for our Lenten Soup Suppers. The Soup Suppers will start at 6:00 pm each Monday, during Lent, following Adoration at 3:00 pm and Benediction in the Chapel at 5:50 pm. Consider spending some quiet time with our Lord at Adoration, and then fellowship with our community gathering at the Soup Suppers. What a beautiful way to celebrate Lent.

4 GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE February 25, nd Sunday of Lent How are your Lenten resolutions? By the time week two rolls around, plenty of well-meaning people have skipped, neglected, or outright forgotten their Lenten resolutions at least once. It can be easy to start excusing our Lenten commitments altogether. Last week we saw Jesus driven into the desert. This Sunday, we see Jesus leading his disciples to an equally barren place: he "led them up a high mountain apart by themselves." But what happens there? "And he was transfigured before them and his clothes became dazzling white." Today's Gospel reminds us of the goal. We don't enter into the desert for the sake of suffering, but for the sake of transformation. Mountain imagery is prevalent throughout Scripture. The sacrifice of Isaac, Moses receiving the 10 Commandments, Elijah's revelation of God as a tiny whispering sound: all these occur on the mountaintop. Mountains are strenuous to hike. To assist the traveler in the assent, trails often involve switchbacks. These lead the traveler back and forth across the mountainside, sometimes appearing as if hardly any ground is gained. Perhaps Peter, James, and John hiked a similar path as Jesus led them up the side of Mount Tabor. A climb is difficult. A climb in a barren place leaves you thirsty, exhausted, and quite possibly frustrated or discouraged. Yet this is precisely how Jesus leads his closest disciples. Why? Because he has something to reveal to them. Practically speaking, Jesus needed to bring Peter, James and John away from the crowds for this revelation of glory to remain hidden. There are spiritual truths we will encounter only if we pass through difficulty. So let's persevere this Lent! Today's Gospel invites us to trust that, if we persevere in following Jesus, he'll lead us to something beautiful and glorious as well. Pero, solamente, tomando tiempo para escuchar se puede crecer en relaciones, tener calidad de vida, entendimiento propio y el discipulado. Esto es lo que pasó a Pedro, Santiago y Juan el día de la Transfiguración del Señor. Fueron llamados a escuchar, ver, y oír lo que pasaba a su alrededor. Ellos fueron testigos oculares de una escena teofánica, que da respuesta a la pregunta de Quién es Jesús? Vieron una especie de preludio pascual. Ahora, imagina la escena, está presente en ese momento, cierra los ojos y contempla, escucha, siente y vive lo mismo que los apóstoles. Qué ves, que escuchas, que sientes al contemplar tan grande belleza? Los ingenuos discípulos, querían hacer tres tiendas y quedarse allí para siempre. Si como lo escuchas, para siempre. Quieren un deseo imposible, permanecer en la gloria e evitar el sufrimiento. De repente la voz de Dios los vuelve a la realidad. "Este es mi Hijo, el amado, escúchenlo". (Marcos 9:7). Al momento, se va la ilusión. El Mesías tenía que padecer una muerte de Cruz. Ellos entendieron todo después de la resurrección. Marcos, ahora, nos ayuda a comprender una anticipación de la gloria de Jesús que se avecinaba. Pidamos a Dios esta semana por la gracia de saber escuchar donde Él está. Abraham supo escuchar a Dios y obedecerlo, Pedro, Santiago y Juan hicieron lo suyo. Ahora, es nuestro tiempo de escuchar y aprender. Dónde crees que puedes escuchar la voz de Dios en esta semana?

5 GETTING TO KNOW..SERENA HEWITT Serena is a constant in our parish family life: you will find her selling tickets for an event in the vestibule, working in the kitchen, organizing group events, helping in the gardens, and ministering to anyone in need with outstretched hands and her compassionate heart. Over the years we have seen you especially at 10:00 AM Mass as a Eucharist Minister. I understand that you are also a Minister of Care; tell us why you chose to become involved in these ministries: It was Fr. Jack who first asked me to be a Eucharist Minister. At first I did not feel worthy enough, and then found that it is the most rewarding experience to hold our Lord in my hands and share this experience with others who share in the same faith. And then once I retired the year before last, I thought that I had time during the day to bring the gift of our Lord to those who are housebound. I could not do this while I was still teaching. I have found that I love sitting and talking with people, and just listening. The decision to become a Minister of Care came from my heart to give some of my time to others. You are our newest chairperson of Parish Fellowship; what exactly is the Fellowship role in our parish? Fellowship s mission is to bring the parish community together for many activities. We are a parish family, not just different activities, and so Fellowship endeavors to bring together the people through the activities. I am hoping to broaden the spectrum of Fellowship going forward, opening up new and different activities. We are always looking for more people to join, so consider this your personal invitation! Let s stay tuned in to the Fellowship ministry for more interesting events in the near future! What do you think makes our parish so special in the hearts of our parishioners? Our parish is like a tree, we have the roots, a sturdy trunk and lots of branches. Every season, new branches also become part of our tree. All of the people and pastors in our history have grown and nurtured our enduring tree. Some of our new branches come from Fr. Karol ~ he brings new and welcoming life to our parish. His never ending energy has brought us closer together through more activities in our parish. I also think that we like being a smaller parish, we like knowing one another; this makes us more like family. And Fr. Karol s warm and family friendly disposition opens the doors wide-open for all of us, inviting us to work, play and worship together as a loving family. Tell us about your children and sweet grandchildren! I have been blessed with three wonderful children and my fabulous daughter in law Kendra and son in law Jon. My children have given me the honor of having five grandchildren ~ they are the heartbeat of my heart! Dan, my oldest son, is a senior project manager; he and Kendra have two beautiful daughters, Regan and Kiera. Jaime and Jon are both teachers and have the new baby Jessa and her big sister Jenna, our princesses. Tim is an outside sales account manager; he has his hands full with our precocious little guy, Jimmy. You and your children sponsor a charitable bowling event every year on Good Friday. Would you share with us the story of The Jim Hewitt Good Friday Bowl: One night almost 18 years ago, my husband Jim came home on a Good Friday and said that we should take the kids bowling. My reply was Jim, you don t go bowling on Good Friday! His response was You tell me when Jesus would say not to do something with your kids! Off we went to Lan-Oak Bowl in Lansing, and it became our special event every Good Friday until Jim became ill, diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor. Doctors could not remove all of the tumor, and after 8 months of a good fight, Jim lost the battle 15 years ago. The first Good Friday without their loving husband and father, the Hewitt s invited family and friends to bowl with them, and officially started the Jim Hewitt Good Friday Bowl. It became a way to honor Jim s memory and has grown from family and close friends to anyone who would like to participate. The annual event benefits the Hospice of Calumet and the American Brain Tumor Association as a way to help others. This year s Hewitt Good Friday Bowl will take place March 30 th. Anyone interested in more information can contact Serena regarding this good cause and a fun evening. As a practicing Catholic your whole life, what would you say is your greatest joy of following your faithful path? My relationship with God. I live my everyday life in prayer with Him, in personal conversations, in private and in church. I went to all Catholic schools and never fell away. I have always liked going to church. In college, I made time to go to the Newman Center; we were just beginning to have lay Eucharist Ministers at that time. I remember thinking that I didn t like that we couldn t take the Holy Eucharist into our own hands, yet the Eucharist Minister did. Things DO change over time don t they? I worked in the rectory at St. John the Baptist in high school and college on weekends, and loved it. I have been close with and gotten to know many great priests over the years. When I retired from a profession that I loved, I was concerned if I could keep active enough to be happy. With my church friends and all of the activities we become involved in, I have found that we are family here at St. John s, and all of you have become my great blessing. Serena, you are an inspiration to your parish family with your caring heart and good works here at St. John s! If anyone is interested in working or playing with Serena, just let her know, and she will pick you up in her church bus and take you for a whirlwind ride!

6 The Knightly News! Mary Queen of Knights Annual ID Dinner The Knights held their annual ID Dinner on Thursday, January 25th at Lorenzetti s in Chicago Heights. This event is the culmination of the efforts of the Council for the 2017 calendar year. Representatives from New Star Services were also present. New Star in an organization that assists adults with intellectual disabilities who are able to work and live just like all of us but just need a little extra help. The Knights contributed a total of $2250 to New Star. It was a wonderful evening! Here's What Else is Coming Up... Monthly Council Meeting, Thursday, March 1st at 7:30pm in the Social Hall Pancake Breakfast with the Easter Bunny on March 18th at 8:00am in the Social Hall Council Business Meeting on Thursday, March 22nd at 7:30pm in the Social Hall Here's What We Have Accomplished Recently... The potato pancake dinner on Friday, February 16th was an incredible success!! We actually sold out, but thanks to Father Karol s help we were quickly back in business! Thanks to all the Knights who helped out, and to those people who attended. Mary Queen of Knights has two new members! Bob Leluga and Jose Lopez have completed their First Degree Exemplifications on Thursday, February 8th, at the K of C hall in Lansing. Welcome Brother Knights!

7 Join Us at Friday Fish Fry We are planning to visit other parishes fish frys on Fridays during Lent. Here s the schedule of parish Locations: Fridays during Lent at 7:00 PM. March 2nd Stations will be led by the CCD Students. Come to experience this beautiful devotion to our Lord. March 2 - St. James, Sauk Village March 9 - St. Michael the Archangel, South Chicago March 16 - St. Christina, Chicago/Beverly We ll meet in the St. John parking lot at 4:30 pm, unless otherwise noted or announced. St. John Lenten Food Drive Food donations will be accepted through the season of Lent. Monetary donations are appreciated as well. The monies are used to purchase fresh produce, meats and dairy products. A basket with eggs is available in the vestibule throughout Lent. Inside the egg you will find the name of a food item for the family baskets. Take an egg, buy the item, return the food and the egg to the Social Hall. 8 Outreach Ministry Lenten Mission Project This year s Lenten Mission Project is a continuation of the Cuba Initiative that we introduced in The Cuba Initiative project is a 3-year commitment to Cuba, funded through Catholic Extension. We are in our 2 nd year of our 3-year commitment. In 2017, we were able to raise nearly $6,000 and provide that money to Catholic Extension which was used to partially fund a project request by a local Cuban parish Our Lady of Pilar (pictured here). It s amazing to hear how our monies are helping another parish community thousands of miles away continue to practice their faith in a safe environment. Thank you for your continued generosity! Let s meet or exceed last year s total. As we continue with our commitment to Cuba and the projects there, our goals for this year s Lenten Mission: complete the request of Our Lady of Pilar parish and begin to establish a relationship with the parish/ community there; fund other projects that we may be able to support, located in Cuba and/or Puerto Rico; and continue to cultivate the relationship with the parish in Haiti. How can you help? We will once again use the little cardboard Church Banks. Any lose change, donations from your friends/family, can be collected and put into the Church Bank. Pick up one (or more) of the Church Banks in the vestibule. Put it where it can be seen at home or work; start a conversation about what you re raising donations for and you re likely to get people to support the Cuba Initiative. We will collect Church Banks throughout Lent; final collection will be Palm Sunday weekend. Place your filled Church Banks in the Cuba Basket in the vestibule. We also plan to have special events that will benefit our Cuba Initiative as well. Stay tuned for more details. Once again, thank you as always for your generous hearts.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The second Sunday of Lent every year recalls the Transfiguration of the Lord. Since the fourth century, Mount Tabor has been the focus of devotion to this event. As mountains go, it is not particularly lofty, rising about fifteen hundred feet, within view of the Sea of Galilee and very close to Nazareth. Scripture doesn t identify the mountain, but in the year 348 Saint Cyril of Jerusalem said he preferred Mount Tabor to Mount Hermon as the site of the Transfiguration, and his opinion won. It has long been a strategic military site, and ancient fortresses are visible on the heights. Over the centuries, churches and fortified monasteries rose on the mountaintop, only to be destroyed by various invaders. Six hundred years ago, local Christians started to decorate the ruins with flags and banners on the Feast of the Transfiguration. In 1631, the Sultan granted permission to the Franciscans to live on Mount Tabor, and they have been there ever since, discovering the ruins of an old Crusader church and constructing the present church on the site in The top of the mountain is divided into Greek Orthodox and Latin (that s us) zones. At one time, tourists arrived on the summit by bus, but this is no longer permitted. Some ride bicycles up a challenging and winding path, while others take the four thousand three hundred steps constructed for Christian pilgrims in the fourth century. It s hard to imagine the fishermen following Jesus up this craggy mountain without complaint. Visitors will sympathize with Peter s plan to construct booths and stay put with Jesus, Moses, and Elijah for a while, enjoying the view, and planning the trip back down. Rev. This type of sacrifice consecrated the entire offering to God alone. This is what God was asking of Abraham in offering his only son, Isaac. When Abraham demonstrated his obedience, that was enough. This story from today s scriptures foretells the completion of the blood sacrifices of the old covenant in the new covenant: the blood of God s own Son, offered to us on the cross and in the Eucharist. Abraham s obedience foreshadows the obedience of Jesus to God s promise of salvation. The obedience of Abraham is rewarded in the birth to him, through Isaac, of many nations. The obedience of Jesus is rewarded in the salvation of all people for all time.
