3 Dear Parishioners, We have arrived safely to Cuba and are enjoying the beautiful weather. We met up with Father Lukasz and will keep you posted! Let s continue to keep each other in prayer, Fr. Karol 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal Come, Follow Me and share the Word Please spend some time this week reflecting on the Annual Catholic Appeal brochure that you received with your bulletin. The Annual Catholic Appeal is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledged campaign commitment where you can make a gift payable in installments. A pledge is a promise to make a gift over a span of time. Each pledge makes a difference because all parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services to answer Jesus call to Come, Follow Me and share the Word. Once we reach our parish goal of $12,721 in paid pledges, 100% of any additional funds come back to our parish to help fund our needs. If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it back or bring it to Mass next weekend. For those of you who did not receive a mailing or have not had time to respond, we will conduct our in-pew pledge process at all Masses next weekend. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response.

4 GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE February 10, th Sunday in Ordinary Time Do you have enough? Many of us come from a nation of material abundance. We have all the things we could possibly need not only to survive, but to thrive - food, shelter, mental ability, income, access to medical care. Most people in human history lived with far less than we. So why are we so dissatisfied? Some Christians can be drawn to the "prosperity Gospel." This is the idea that following God will bring us material abundance in this life. That surely seems to be the story of today's Gospel! Peter and his friends chose - with some faith - to put out their nets a final time at Jesus' command. "They caught a great number of fish and their nets were tearing. They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come to help them. They came and filled both boats so that they were in danger of sinking." What gift! What abundance! What prosperity! Peter and his friends caught more fish than they'd ever seen. Yet what is their response to this material abundance, this gift from God? They leave it behind. "When they brought their boats to the shore, they left everything and followed him." Praying for God to meet our physical, material needs is not a bad thing! Jesus himself includes "give us this day our daily bread" in the prayer he teaches his disciples. The question is, how do we respond when our prayers are answered? Do we thank God briefly, or perhaps ignore Him completely and move on with our lives? Or do we respond as Peter did? "God? You showed up in an area that has no bearing on my eternal salvation. You gave me a gift I didn't even really need. You love me! You really do love me." Is our gratitude only surface level? Or do we allow ourselves, like Peter did, to respond with wonder, awe, and deeper discipleship? MEDITACIÓN EVANGÉLICO - ALENTAR EN- TENDIMIENTO MÁS PROFUNDO DE LA ESCRITURA 10 de febrero de º Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario La semana pasada escuchábamos sobre la vocación del profeta Jeremías; hoy escuchamos el llamado del profeta Isaías. Dios escogía a sus profetas de diferentes formas para hablar de su amor y misericordia eterna por la humanidad desde el principio. En el Evangelio de este domingo vemos como Pedro y los otros discípulos fueron cautivados por Jesús y dejándolo todo, pero todo, sin reservas, sin miedos, sin quejas, le siguieron. No hay vuelta de hoja para Pedro y los otros discípulos. Jesús les invitaba a participar del Reino y daría comienzo la aventura del aprendizaje del seguimiento al Maestro. "Vengan conmigo y vean". La pesca milagrosa se tornó en vocación. Gracias a ella, Pedro y los demás discípulos sintieron el llamado personal de Jesús. Isaías, Pedro y los hijos de Zebedeo Santiago y Juan, junto con Pablo son alcanzados por el llamado?dejan todo de diferentes maneras y siguen la voz de Dios. Unos fueron profetas y los otros pescadores de la humanidad. Ahora nos toca a los bautizados. La pregunta sigue: A quién enviare? Quién ira por mí? La respuesta exige capacidad de riesgo y una buena parte de confianza. Dios espera una respuesta hoy mismo. Espera jóvenes disponibles, limitados con sus debilidades. La iniciativa viene de Jesús; la respuesta es la tuya. Sin olvidar que la vocación es misión, es entrega generosa con alegría, y de buena nueva para los más necesitados. Las vocaciones de ahora: matrimonio, vida consagrada, sacerdote, religiosa, y vida laical. Todos llamados a contribuir a una sociedad más justa y buena. Qué piensas tú de la invitación a la vocación para seguir a Jesús?

5 WHY AM I HERE? All of us have had the experience of leaving one room and going into another to do something, only to find that, upon arriving, we ask ourselves the question, Why am I here? I have concluded that, when I told myself the reason for going, I proceeded too quickly and left the reason behind. My solution is to return to the place where the decision was made in hopes that the thought would re-enter my mind. I suggest that, since we have a lot of experience asking this question, that we ask it the next time that we enter a church. Why am I here? We know that we made a decision to come to church but do we remember why we made that decision? Are we here because we expect to receive something? Are we here because we want to bring something with us? Are we desirous of an experience which will invigorate us? Are we here out of habit? Are we here because we have to be here? There may be hundreds of other reasons most of them valid. Sometimes, the answer to the question is, I don t know. Now let s move from being in church to being in our home. There are a lot of things happening in the world in which we could be involved. And there are a lot of things going on in our church in which we could also become involved. Most of these things in the world and in our church do not require a full, life-time commitment. They just require a few minutes or, even, an hour of our time on an infrequent basis. Our reasons for not participating run the gamut from I am not physically able to I do not want to. In any case, we could ask ourselves our original question with a slight addition, Why am I here and not there? Deacon Jim RCIA Classes On February 21st we will start our RCIA classes. We will meet for 8 weeks on Thursdays at 7:00 PM. 7 The St. John Ministry of Care is responsible for the Eucharistic service at the Glenwood Healthcare Center each Sunday. Our Ministry of Care is short-handed and looking for volunteers to help them at Glenwood Healthcare Center on Sundays. Volunteers are needed to assist at the Eucharistic Service from 9:30am 11am. What is needed: To help our Ministers move wheelchair bound residents to the Cafeteria area and assisting the Ministers at the morning service. For more information contact Bob Leluga at

8 Tax Credit Scholarship Update We are excited to share that Empower Illinois will begin awarding tax credit scholarships for the school year tomorrow, February 1, Scholarships will be awarded on a rolling basis throughout the school year as funds are available. We can also share that over 225 students are now listed in the Empower Illinois portal as Awaiting Funding. And, I should add that other children (from multiple families) will be added to this list in the days ahead because we have been made aware of at least several systemic glitches that occurred and are currently being addressed. Of course, it is your generosity and willingness to make sacrifices that is making this process work for our families. Currently, donors have gifted the school with $39,800 which means that we have $119,400 after the match. I have been in contact with several donors who have promised to complete this process before the 2/28/19 deadline. I know that many of you are reaching out to friends and family. No amount of money is too small. We received one donation of $300 which, after the match, will provide an award for a student within a multiple student family. We know that some friends on this list may live out of state, are retired, or for a myriad of reasons, cannot participate in this program. Please pray for us. At the end of the day, that s what we need the most. Re-gifting is a good thing: Donate unwanted gifts for seniors in 'Leave It for Love' A February Homewood-Flossmoor community collection of unwanted gift items for the Leave It for Love project will help brighten a senior citizen s day, said founder Jennifer Molski of Flossmoor. Suggested items include hostess gifts, warm weather gear, trinkets, household décor, makeup and perfume. Books and clothing are not being accepted. The regifting program is designed to offer unused items to those who think they are all alone in this world, she said. Gifts will be collected at Loulou Belle at 2049 Ridge Road in Homewood and Coldwell Banker at 1056 Sterling Drive in Flossmoor. Gifts are distributed throughout the year by Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly, an agency providing social services to older adults in the Chicagoland area.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The Reign of God comes about because people commit to reversing their lives completely, to embracing new vision, new values. Many popular television shows exploit an unattractive side of human nature by pitting contestants against one another, even to the point of performing dangerous stunts or devious schemes, to gain money or favor. At the liturgy, we counter that impulse by committing ourselves to live generously. In response to Christ s total gift, we offer bread and wine as the emblems of our lives, our hopes, our joys and sorrows. The bread and wine carried to the altar contain our lives, and by offering our lives to God, we prepare to receive the gift of God s own life. We are to become what we receive: the body of Christ. On Sundays, this self giving is often accompanied by a collection and procession of gifts for the poor and money for the upkeep of the parish. There are certainly other methods of collecting money, some perhaps more efficient.
