1 ANNUNCIATION PARISH May Crowning Our annual Annunciation May Crowning will be celebrated today, Sunday, May 6. At the conclusion of our 11:00 a.m. Mass, we will process from church to our Mary Garden to crown our Marian statue. You are welcome to bring flowers from home with which to honor Mary. Finance Commission Meeting The next meeting of our Annunciation Parish Finance Commission is this Tuesday, May 8, at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Conference Room. St. Vincent de Paul Meeting Our Annunciation Parish St. Vincent de Paul Conference will have their monthly meeting this Tuesday, May 8, at 7:30 p.m. in the cafeteria. All are welcome to become involved in this outreach ministry that seeks to provide emergency material assistance to those in our neighborhood who are in need. Eucharistic Holy Hour Please join us this Wednesday, May 9, at 7:00 p.m. in church for Eucharistic Exposition and Adoration, beginning with brief prayer and song. There will then be time for quiet, personal prayer, reading, meditation, contemplation, and adoration. We will conclude with Benediction at 7:45 p.m. All are welcome! Interested in Becoming Catholic? Annunciation School Faith Formation News Our weekly celebration of Morning Prayer with students and faculty, preschool-8th grade, is Thursday, May 10th at 9:30 a.m. in church. During the Easter Season, we will also be celebrating the Easter Procession during Morning Prayer. Each class, grades 1-8, has made an Easter Season Banner for the celebration. 2 SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER MAY 6, 2018 May Crowning & Mary Gardens Devotion to Mary, the Mother of Jesus, during the month of May has a long history, and is the reason why you will hear some people refer to May as Mary s month. May devotion has a place in parishes and schools, as well as in our own homes. One tradition during the month of May is May Crowning, or the crowning of an image of Mary. Here at Annunciation Parish, our annual May Crowning Celebration will be held at the conclusion of our 11:00 a.m. Mass today. All are welcome, so please join us! You can also create a May Shrine in your own home or classroom. This can be as simple as placing an image of Mary (statue, icon, holy card, etc.) in a special place in your home or classroom, and placing some fresh flowers at your home/classroom shrine. Do you know there are hundreds and hundreds of flowers, plants, and herbs that are associated with Mary, the Mother of Jesus? There is even a tradition of creating an entire Mary Garden with these plants and flowers. This is a wonderful devotion and teachable moment for your domestic church - your family! And why not plan to take a Mary s Flowers tour of our Annunciation Parish Church? Stop in on a bright sunny day, and spend some time looking at all of the flowers that appear in art throughout our church. Mary is the mother of Jesus and the mother of the Church, so how appropriate that we honor her in a special way during the month when we celebrate Mother s Day. 3 ANNUNCIATION PARISH Annunciation Graduating Seniors Annunciation families is there a graduating senior in your family who will be heading to college this fall? If so, would you please contact our Parish Office at providing the graduate s name and college selection? This information enables the Newman Connection to reach out to incoming college freshmen across the country to help keep students connected to their Catholic faith during the college years. The only information provided to the Newman Center is the student s name and college. No phone numbers, s, addresses, or other personal information is provided. CLIFTON, CINCINNATI, OHIO The Original Novena by Paul Turner A venerable Catholic tradition sets aside nine days of prayer as a novena. Novenas enjoyed a more popular history as recently as the last generation of Catholics, but this generation continues the custom in various places, on different occasions. Praying consistently on a particular theme for nine days brings a comfortable spiritual rhythm that allows the prayer to intensify from day to day. Far from causing boredom, these become occasions for spiritual repetition, for deepening our relationship with God. The mother of all novenas dates back to the original disciples. According to Acts of the Apostles (1:3), Jesus ascended into heaven 40 days after the resurrection. The disciples then entered a period of intense prayer (1:13-14). On Pentecost, the fiftieth day after Passover, the Holy Spirit came to them all (2:1). Those nine days situated between Ascension and Pentecost became the prototype of the novena. Our liturgy today still honors the original idea. In some places the Ascension is celebrated on the Sunday before Pentecost. Moving the Ascension from a Thursday to a Sunday permits a greater number of believers to celebrate one of the major mysteries in the life of Christ. Our church has long permitted countries to make this switch if they wish. You don't end up with the same number of days between the two events, but the spirit of the period remains in place. Even Luke himself seems unsure about the exact number of days intervening here. Although he seems clear in Acts about the sequence of events, he follows a very different chronology in his own Gospel, where he implies that the Ascension took place on the same day as Easter (24:51). Other evangelists concur. Nonetheless, our liturgical year in the Catholic church has always adopted the chronology from Acts as the one we follow year after year. It gets us into the spirit of intense, ever-deepening prayer. As your parish marks the days between Ascension and Pentecost, it prays daily, intently for the coming of the Holy Spirit into your midst today. Copyright (c) 1997 Resource Publications, Inc., 160 E. 4 SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER MAY 6, 2018 NOVENA TO THE HOLY SPIRIT This is the original novena, nine days of prayer preceding the great day of Pentecost, recalling the nine days the apostles spent in prayer between the Lord s Ascension and the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the Church. Those praying the Novena to the Holy Spirit join with the Church in asking for its continual renewal so it may be a faithful witness to the Gospel of Christ. The novena is to be prayed this year from Friday, May 11 th, through Saturday, May 19 th. V. Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful, R. and enkindle in us the fire of your love. V. Send forth your Spirit, and we shall be re-created, R. and you will renew the face of the earth. Let us pray. O God, you teach the hearts of the faithful by giving them the light of your Spirit. Grant to us, that by this same Spirit, we may be truly wise and ever enjoy your consolation. We pray through Christ, our Lord. R. Amen.
