3 Christmas has always been my favorite Holiday. I still recall many of the Christmas traditions that were part of my family life. One of them was the decorating of the Christmas tree on Christmas Eve. My task was to take an ax and go to our forest to find and cut the most beautiful evergreen tree I was able to find. Some years when we had a lot of snow, bringing the tree home was more difficult than cutting it. Once the tree had been brought home, I was helped by my siblings to decorate it. As the tree was being decorated, my mom was busy in the kitchen preparing meatless dishes for wigilia. Wigilia is the traditional Polish dinner celebrated on Christmas Eve. I remember staring through the window to see the first star shine. That was a sign for us to begin the meal. We would gather around our dining room table making sure that there was one extra place setting for an unexpected guest. Wigilia always began with our family praying together. My father read the Gospel of Luke that tells the story of Christ s birth. While they were there (Bethlehem), the time came for her to have her child, and she gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. The Gospel reminded us that the reason we gather to celebrate wigilia was Christ s birth. After saying the Our Father and the Hail Mary, the time came for yet another tradition Oplatki. Oplatki are the wafers that were used during wigilia. Each family member took one and shared it with others wishing Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Sometimes those wishes were more personal, coming from the heart. The next tradition was sharing the meal. We would fast the day before Christmas, so the food that we shared tasted even better. After the meal, our family gathered around the Christmas tree to sing Christmas Carols. We would use various hymnals to help us with singing. There was no Christmas Eve Mass as we have here at St. John s. The first Christmas Mass was celebrated at midnight. I am excited that this year we are able to celebrate the Midnight Mass here at St. John s. You might be asking what about the gifts? In my family, we would receive gifts on December 6th, which is the Feast of St. Nicholas. St. Nicholas was the one to place the bags filled with gifts under my pillow as I slept. In the US, we receive gifts Christmas morning from Santa Claus. This year, I made sure that there is enough room for him under my Christmas tree to leave the gifts. Gifts are important and bring us joy and make us feel loved. As Shepherds and Magi came to Bethlehem to see the newborn Christ, so we come and gather with our families and friends at St. John s to celebrate anew the birth of Christ. We each have our own family traditions and customs when it comes to celebrating Christmas. These traditions and customs help us to celebrate Christ who is present in each one of us. He is the Emmanuel which means God is with us. May this Christmas fill us all with Peace and Joy. May God continue to bless us and our families and friends. MARDI GRAS Planning is underway by the St. John Fellowship Club to sponsor a Parish Mardi Gras on Saturday, February 25, 2017 at 6 PM in the Parish Social Hall. Food, dancing, a Mardi Gras Parade and a good time for all is on the agenda. Everyone is welcome. There also will be hospitality in the Social Hall on Sunday, February 26 so anyone who didn t make it to Mardi Gras can see how beautifully the hall is transformed. Fr. Karol will also burn our palms from last year after the 10:00 Mass on February 26. Watch for more info in upcoming bulletins. MOTHER/DAUGHTER POT LUCK DINNER Monday, May 8, 2017 at 6:00 PM is the date and time for the annual Mother/Daughter Pot Luck Dinner. Bring your favorite dish for the common table and enjoy an evening of great food, excellent company and prayer. TASTE OF ST. JOHN On Pentecost Sunday, June 4, 2017 we will have our Taste of St. John. More details will be available in bulletins closer to that date. ANNUAL PARISH FAMILY PICNIC The Parish picnic will be held on Sunday, August 6, bingo, children s games, prizes and great food are available to everyone. There is no cost, (except for beer and bingo) as this event is meant simply to bring the parish closer together. This is one event you won t want to miss.

THE GIFT OF GOD S WORD On this day of gifts and gift giving, it seems appropriate that we take a moment to reflect on the great gift of God s Word. Because it is creative, God s Word always points to its author, always calls us to respond. Because it is powerful, God s Word can link the sublime with the ridiculous, the transcendent with the immanent, the divine with the human. Because it is graceful, God s Word establishes a relationship of deep intimacy between us and God. At the heart of God s Word lies a tantalizing tension between the mysterious and the mundane. In our liturgical celebration, this unresolved tension both reveals the meaning of life for us and calls us to respond, to act upon that meaning. Once accepted and opened, the gift of God s Word is a gift that keeps on giving and keeps on calling us to give in return. It dares us to be like the gift giver and to become gifts for others, not only at Christmas, but at every moment of life. Copyright J. S. The answer is not really obvious, since Christmas is unique in having several distinct celebrations. The readings and prayers vary greatly from hour to hour. The Vigil Mass hinges on the family heritage of Jesus and his origins. The concept of midnight predates clock time, and really has to do with a celebration in the hours of darkness. Years ago, it was not possible to receive Communion without fasting for a full day, so the late hour of this Mass made it possible for the people to receive. The first Mass after sunrise, the Mass at Dawn, was once known as The Shepherds Mass, and later Masses set aside stories of Jesus birth to focus on the key to the day s celebration: John the Evangelist s majestic theology of Christ s identity as the Word made flesh, dwelling among us. One feast, four separate Masses. Only monasteries manage the whole round. Parishioners typically take just one entry point into the mystery. Yet there is much to savor and celebrate in the coming of Christ into the world. Christmas is not a day, but a season.
