4 Sometimes we Catholics are accused of not being Bible oriented in our beliefs. However, if people would read any of the documents issued by the Pope or by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, they would find that they contain many direct and indirect references to the Bible both Old and New Testaments. In addition, the Catechism of the Catholic Church does the same. They all have extensive footnotes which contain biblical citations. Our liturgy is based upon the Bible and it contains many direct or indirect references to the Bible also. In a way, though, critics are correct in that we do not read or study the Bible as we should. Well, we have a response to those critics at St. John Parish. We are winding down the sessions in which we are studying an introduction to the Old Testament and will soon be starting sessions in which we will study an introduction to the New Testament. Cupich will celebrate a Mass to End Domestic Violence on Saturday, September 30th at 5:15 p.m. in Holy Name Cathedral. Everyone is invited. He will preach on our need to reach out to victims of domestic violence and their children and work to build healthy relationships in our families. Classes meet on Sundays at 9:00 9:50 am beginning October 1st. Tuition will be free this year! There will only be a book fee of $35.00 per student to cover the cost of books and supplies. ACADEMY OF OUR LADY REUNION SET FOR OCTOBER 14 Academy of Our Lady/Longwood High School graduates of years ending in 2 and 7 will receive a special salute at the AOL Alumnae Association s all-school Reunion 2017 from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, at the Hilton Oak Lawn Hotel, 94th and Cicero Avenue, Oak Lawn. Like Eucharistic Prayer II, it has no preface of its own, but the presider chooses from a long menu of possible prefaces to become part of the prayer on a particular occasion. Also, like Eucharistic Prayer II it has a way to insert the name of the deceased in Masses for the dead such as funerals and memorials. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal views Eucharistic Prayer III as the best substitute for Eucharistic Prayer I on Sundays and feasts. In practice, this prayer is used very often at Sunday Mass, and its texts are familiar to all members of the assembly. In this prayer, notice that the priest extends his hands over the gifts and calls down the Holy Spirit to change them into the Body and Blood of Christ. This call of the Holy Spirit is called the epiclesis, and Eastern Christians consider it to be the consecration. Latin Christians have long considered the institution narrative to be the consecration. Partly in response to a deep sensitivity to the East, the reformers took care to structure all our new prayers with a strong epiclesis.
