2 HOLY REDEEMER CATHOLIC CHURCH, COLLEGE PARK, MD FOURTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME "The people were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes." Those gathered in the synagogue where Jesus taught had never heard anything like this before. They were used to the preaching of the well-educated scribes, but Jesus possessed something that those men lacked: authority. Instead of merely interpreting the laws of the prophets, Jesus presented a new vision, indeed, he shared the good news of the Gospel with his listeners. We do not have the opportunity to stand in the presence of Jesus in the same way that those first-century Jews did, but nonetheless we can also stand in awe of his authority. His teachings are available to us through the sacred Scriptures that the Church has preserved and through the sacred tradition that the Church carries on. And in a special way, Christ's authority continues to inspire and guide us through the ministries of the papacy, episcopacy, and priesthood that Jesus established on our behalf while he was yet on earth. As Catholics, we have a special share in the astonishing authority of Jesus through the hierarchy of the Church. Although this structure is often misunderstood or misinterpreted, it is actually an authority rooted in service and modeled after Christ who told his apostles, "The greatest among you must be your servant" (Mt 23:11). This humble exercise of authority is contrary to the worldly search for power. And whenever we find ourselves in a position of authority, we too should strive to lead and direct others in the true spirit of Christian love and service. Chances are, if we truly imitate Christ in this way, people will be astonished at what they see. This Weekend: Cardinal s Appeal 2018 The theme of this year s Cardinal s Appeal is, Seek First the Kingdom of God. (Matthew 6:33). The Cardinal s Appeal campaign is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift, today, payable over ten months. A significant gift to the Cardinal s Appeal will touch the lives of many others in a positive way. As you review the work enabled by your contribution, please reflect on God s gifts to you. He has given you all that you have. Your gifts to Holy Redeemer, to the Archdiocese, and to the work of the Church throughout the world should be given in gratitude for the continuing gifts that God gives you. Sometimes it is difficult to envision how one pledge can help an organization the size of our Archdiocese, how it can make a real difference. But each pledge does make a difference because all parishes participate in the campaign, and the gifts of many enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services. Our combined gifts not only signify our gratitude to God, they glorify Him by enabling the work of our Archdiocese and give Him thanks for all He has given us. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response.

School of Religion School of Religion will not be in session this Sunday, January 28th due to Catholic Schools Week. Men s Discernment Retreat Friday, February 2nd through Sunday, February 4th: Men in their 20s, 30s, or 40s who are considering a call to the priesthood are invited to attend a discernment retreat at Saint John Paul II Seminary led by priests of the Archdiocese of Washington. The weekend will offer time away from your daily routine and will provide an opportunity for prayer and reflection to examine God s call. There is no fee to attend. Registration is now open at vocations@adw.org with any questions. Service Saturdays Please join us every month on the first Saturday of the month for Service Saturdays. Working with Catholic Charities, DC and other organizations, adults and families are invited to help serve our brothers and sisters in the greater Maryland and Washington, DC area on a service project. (Children & youth under 18 must be accompanied buy a parent or Virtus certified adult.) Our first Service Saturday is Saturday, February 3rd and will be led by Fr. Matt. We will be working with the Missionaries of Charities in their soup kitchen and pregnancy aid center on Wheeler Road in Washington, DC. We will meet to leave from the Holy Redeemer parking lot at 8:00 a.m. Please RSVP to the parish office by Friday, February 2nd at 3:00 p.m. Collection for St. Ann s Center for Children, Youth, & Families During the month of January, March for Life month, Holy Redeemer will be collecting supplies for St. Ann s. Please drop off your donations in the box on the Mezzanine until January 31st. It is a special blessing in which the faithful invoke the saint s intercession, asking him to protect them from ailments of the throat and every other illness. A blessing is provided in the Church s rites for this purpose.
